    FULL AND FRANK REVIEW OF A RIGHT HAND DRIVE CAR IN THE UK
    In this 100% non-sponsored video I get to grips with the new Audi A3 because after my time with the Mk8 Golf in June 2020 I was keen to see if the Audi A3 was still the more desirable car.
    Thanks to Audi UK, I spent a week with this A3 1.5 TFSI S line manual which has the 1.5 TSI EVO engine from the Golf under the bonnet which features a lot of technology to make it cleaner more and efficient than the older generation of engines like the 1.4 TFSI.
    The A3 is marginally more expensive (depending on Golf 8 spec) but is it worth it? Does the more agreeable exterior design and less revolutionary interior mean it can make massive in roads into Golf sales? Let's find out!

    Background info on me : I wrote for VW Driver and Audi Driver magazines from 2003-2019. I've been selling VW Group cars since 2002 as my only job. I passed my driving test in 1994 and my first car was a Polo, second was a Golf, 3rd was a Golf GTI. I have been a VWG owner ever since but work allows me to drive a lot of cars from other manufacturers to which I have an open mind but none have swayed me, yet.....
    Please note the pricing quoted by VW and Audi on their configurators is a bit misleading as one appears to be on the road (VW) and Audi doesn't and I didn't notice this. However what price difference there is is £1500 max which still means the A3 is closer than you'd think.

    Only just watched this - best review of this car so far; thoroughly honest and in the end I think our opinions are the same! We have met in the middle!
    The plastic (albeit still very good, let’s remember the previous standard was exceptional- we haven’t hit Kia levels yet!!) is a minor issue compared to the tech fest on show and the overall package. In fact for the money, you could argue that it is a much better rounded car than before. I’m liking the look more and more too. The new house analogy was very clever and a perfect replication of buyer tastes in 2020 and beyond.
    I still believe the Golf is better value overall when you consider the kit that VW throw in for standard (fabric door bins! 🤣) compared to the Audi, although they are closer than ever on price and quality.
    Also, is it just me who thinks that the air con on Golf 8 is EASIER to control with the big, bright touch buttons in front of your eyes on the screen than the small, dark (albeit physical) buttons in the A3 that are well below eye height - they all look and feel the same too so a driver surely still has to take their eyes off the road?!

      Well Tom people seem be more bothered about hydraulic bonnet struts, locker under headlight switch, retention of buttons, flock lined glovebox & the glovebox having a lock all of which A3 get and Golf doesn't. Maybe this is the new premium? I say this in jest but rewatching my Golf 8 video, I didn't think the Golf dash looked worse, if anything I preferred it's cool clean minimalist line, so much so I wonder if the cars have been given the wrong dashboards! I can only assume that the A3's bigger profit margins mean that it retains content the Golf doesn't but really the big differentiator is design, the A3 gets a lot more of it, inside and out. This is actually a distinct change in what Audi stands for as they have always been relatively unfussy in their design but hewn from granite. Clearly emerging markets and changing buyer tastes have shifted this focus into more superficial areas aka "showroom appeal". With Audi making more per unit on A3 and ID3 needing a strong reception to make economic sense for VW, it really wouldn't make sense for Golf 8 to be too appealing. The relatively slab sided design of Golf 8 is going to date rapidly and I wonder if that's a deliberate move, in that its appeal will wane as VW's electric car range broadens? Whether the interior will come of age is the big question but from the off I suspect it's saved some cash by losing all the expensive switchgear and yet still manages a degree of wow factor.

      volkswizard It’s funny you should say that. I showed my neighbour (Golf GTD 7.5 owner) the inside of a Golf 8 Style and her first words were ‘WOW’. It was getting dark too so the ambient lighting certainly played a part but the general configuration and flowing dash shape reminded her of Audi’s

    • @sean3077
      @sean3077 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      volkswizard still important stuff though, Skoda and Seat get them but the pricier Audi and VW don’t 🤔 just because something’s touch screen and has fancy lights doesn’t make it better.

      I checked an A3 S-Line 40 eTFSi after the GTE test drive. Asked if there are a top spec available in the showroom, because it was soo disappointingly cheap inside.
      Ordered the GTE

  • @CyAn-S
    @CyAn-S 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    @Volkswizard
    The price part as actually funny. At least here in NL. The Golf 8 with a 1.5 eTSI and Audi with the same engine might START from a similar price of around 36.000 Euros, but as you move up the range the Golf actually becomes much more value for money. For instance I got the Golf 8 1.5 eTSI DSG in 'Style' trim with the following extras:
    - Rear View camera.
    - DCC 9 (Adaptive dampers).
    - Metallic paint (of course).
    - Optional 18 inch wheels 'Bergamo'.
    - Keyless access (start is standard across the range).
    - Tinted rear windows.
    - Some cheap 99 euro assistance extension (I think it is just park assist on top of travel assist, which is standard).
    - Discover PRO (10 inch infotainment + sound system and some bits here and there).
    - Winter package. (basically heated stuff).
    - IQ lights (Matrix LED).
    With all this my Golf is around ~40.500 Euro.
    So as I wrote, the price of a Golf 'Style' with the 1.5 eTSI and a base A3 'Pro line' 35 TFSI S tronic are around 36 grand. But at this base price, the Golf actually already has the following things that the Audi does not have, but AS STANDARD. These are not options on the Golf:
    - 14- way electric seats + massage and memory.
    - Travel assist (ACC + lane stuff+ centering etc.). The A3 at this price doesn't even have ACC as standard, let alone lane centering.
    - Blind spot monitoring.
    - Ambient light, 30 color.
    - 3-zone climate.
    - Rear armrest + through loading.
    - Rear USB ports.
    - Actual back pockets on the seats. Yes this is an extra on the A3.
    - Auto dimming mirrors.
    - Heated and auto folding mirrors.
    - Hold assist.
    I have made an A3 'Pro line' 35 TFSI S tronic with the same specs as the Golf and it came to a whopping ~51.800 Euro. And that is with the fact that I couldn't even pick the following things that I do have on my Golf:
    - Matrix LED,
    - 18 inch wheels,
    - Only electric driver seat. Not memory nor massage
    - Only white ambient light not multicolor
    - DCC unless it is standard and hidden from the menu. But I couldn't find it anywhere.
    As a base it might compete with the Golf, but at that base price it has a lot less. Well equipped Golf = 40 grand. Well equipped A3 = 50+ grand. Large enough difference to consider the Golf over the A3. A well equipped S-Line goes more to 60 grand if you really let loose.

      @saintuk70 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ahh the TT, I still have fond memories of my first Mk1 back in 2002 - the interior was unrivaled at the time (imo) when compared to the Merc, BMWs, and other Audis. The interior kept me coming back to lead me through a 3.2 DSG, the 3.2 DSG Roadster, and then back in the last decade to an additional 225. The MkIIs, yes, I liked the first refresh....but through to the MK3 started to lose it. Anyhoo, this is not why I called, I do like the interior of this A3 - especially the integrated media panel..... it's not the annoying iPad on a dash look. I've just ordered a 40 TFSI e PHEV and think I'll be happy with my purchase.

    The Golf vs VAG rivals is always fascinating. I wonder if you can still expect the high end customer experience in the dealers that Audi used to deliver? That counts for something in the overall owner experience.

    Thank you for the review, Andrew. I enjoyed that and I think you made some very good points. Audi (VAG in general) are very good at distinguishing between the internal rivalry, just enough for you to see and possibly want to pay for the premium. The key touch/contact points are so well judged, the steering wheel and the slightly more supportive seats for example take it a notch above the equivalent golf. Great summary in the video, couldn’t have put it better myself.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Lee! Glad you enjoyed it. The Audi definitely, even with all the material downgrades, still has a definite premium appeal over the Golf which I guess is all it needs to have. To drive so well is simply a bonus!

    I can't decide if i should go with the standard or sport suspension (adaptive is a no-go due to cost).
    However, your comments about the sport suspension are encouraging.I'm also configuring the car with 17-inch wheels, instead of 18.
    Would you say the sport suspension is comfortable enough for daily driving and road trips, if paired with 17-inch wheels ?

The Edition 1 has quite a lot of added kit although I can't help but feeling a bit miffed that two things I would really miss from my current car is a reversing camera & ACC. I have to agree with Marcus, I too prefer the old design compared to this newer model. I have been reading up on this R Line A3, the MK8 R Line Golf, Bmw 1 Series M Sport and Mercedes A Class AMG Line. All must have Diesel Engines. I have spent many hrs watching you tube clips on all 4 cars. I plan on buying one of these 4 cars. I can't wait to see these cars in the metal, but my plans hv been hampered because I have been on full lock down since the beginning of April as I have Pancreatic cancer and getting a test drive is a little awkward to say the least. But your reviews are very helpful. So far my buying order is Bmw 4th, Golf 8 is 3rd, and top spot is between the A Class and the A3. Oh, I currently drive VW Golf GTD 7.5 on a 67 plate with 7000 miles on the clock. I just love the torque on this car. This could be my last car so must get this right. What order would other you tube readers put them into to own. Kind regards to all car mad fans.

    Great video again. I am still undecided on the looks for this and the mk8 Golf. Yet to see both in the flesh so will reserve judgement but your enthusiasm and video have persuaded me there is more to the A3 (& Mk8) than I first thought. The house analogy about perceived quality is a good one and clearly bears out where a lot of people’s priorities lie nowadays with any commodity. With the use of pcp perhaps people worry far less about ‘quality’
    as the car only needs to last 2-3 years.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great point re PCP and how quality is no longer so important as you never own the car, and only use it for the large part while it's under warranty. TBH I'd need to sit down with the spec sheets, option prices and a calculator to choose between Golf and A3 as I like and hate bits of both of them. But and it's a big but, if Golf is anywhere close in price, it's got to be A3 then. Glad you enjoyed it Simon and thanks for your constructive comment 👍

I would expect the Audi vehicle to have an engine that's more potent, but that's definitely not the case since this and the Jetta have the same hp on turbocharged engines.

    Really surprised this latest gen of VAG products aren’t coming with optional dash cams. You’d think it would be an easy up sell to make a separate rear view mirror with built in camera and duel purpose screen for playback and reversing camera. Selling them across Audi, VW and co. Would mean they cost little to make with huge sales potential.

    I hear you on the vents... but they’re still waaaay better than the vents on the old A3, horrid, they WERE the dashboard! And that tacky pop up screen.. This is overall a much better design. And most importantly, it’s good to hear it drives well. Looking forward to the S3 review now 😊

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Stan, I hear *you* on the vents, I just feel there may have been a better solution than what we got on the new car but the routing for air behind dash must be a designer's worst nightmare. The pop-up screen is dated now (and goes wrong), the tacked on screen as per current A4 is better but still a bit clumsy but what they do well is make you appreciate how good a properly integrated screen as it is here.
      I wasn't too excited about new S3 before I drove this but now I am. It's great to get the base car out of the way so when performance models surface you can just worry about the fun bit 😎

      volkswizard Going back to Golf 8 for comparison purposes, the dashboard does seem less fussy. The trick is leaving an impression of quality without seeming to be trying too hard. New A4 Avant is pretty dope too! If only the screen was integrated it would be perfect and quality of materials is on brand with that car. Matrix LEDs are probably the best option you get for £675, the cost of a metallic paint (but then £575 for Daytona is pretty good value too). Add on Comfort & Sound pack to standard S line spec and that's a hell of a car.

      It's not that bad though it seems to be more of a downgrade than Golf 8 from 7.5 but A3 was a bastion of quality inside and i wonder if the chaps at Audi AG have worked out it's not a key selling point. Maybe buyers are more concerned about how the exterior looks because more people see it and it does look good and appears to be where a lot of the effort has gone.

    I think the Audi has the nicer exterior and the golf the nicer interior. The Audi just looks a bit fussy especially the air vents. On pricing between this car and the Golf 8 I would check the extras as I suspect the level of stranded equipment on the Golf is higher so you may find yourself having to pay a fair bit more to get some of the features that are standard on the Golf 8. As for fuel efficacy I recently drove a Golf 8 1.5etsi on a 250 mile mostly motorway journey and achieved 61.4mpg at an average speed of 60mph which is pretty impressive for a petrol.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely checking spec is key but the A3 gets 18s while R line Golf is 17, a 'sort of' leather will I suspect be extra on Golf too. On Golf Style there are no folding mirrors and doubt R line gains them but A3 S line has them. I can only really think of adaptive cruise that was standard on Golf Style, possibly wireless charging and App Connect (which was highly unreliable). Agreed re fuel efficiency, I did 70mph and the difference between 60 & 70 mph is quite significant so reckon the A3 non-MHEV would do similar. Correct me if I am wrong but I can't see what effect the eTSI MHEV would have on mpg at a steady speed so don't expect an awful lot of difference between that and this straight 1.5 TSI (TFSI), additional weight of MHEV system and DSG may actually be a slight negative. But whatever, either drivetrain seems to make diesel look like it's on borrowed time, in this class of car at least which I am very surprised about.

    Interesting & informative video, as always. I'm not sure I agree with your conclusions though - to my eyes, the exterior design of the A3 is too fussy. Those side scoops are very "Mercedes A class" (which HAS to be the ugliest car in this class, although the new BMW 1series, with the Bugs Bunny grille runs it close!).
    I thought the interior of Golf 8 looked better, as did the exterior - smoother, simpler & less fussy. And, a personal thing, but I detested the look of the analogue effect dials on the dash - but that's a very subjective thing, I suppose!
    If I was buying a car of this size just now, I'd go & try to get a great deal on the outgoing A3 - looks nicer, inside & out.
    Having said that, I'd probably forgive most of that for the handling - very impressive, considering it's (loosely) the Audi equivalent of a Golf R-line. Looks sporty, but isn't really.
    Again, great video 👍

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's all a bit subjective but I've tested the water on social media and yes there is a bit too much gilding to this S line but the overall design has gone down a lot better than Golf 8.
      I prefer the interior design of Golf 8 which is more minimalist than the Audi but that comes from the removal of nearly all buttons which people generally dislike (unfairly in my opinion).
      Old A3 is nice but it will look very old very soon, it didn't look massively different to the old 8P generation and car design seems to be becoming a lot braver all of sudden which will take some time to get used to but it's inevitable that we will as it's happened so many times before.
      I don't think anyone has driven the new R line Golf and the Style I drove wasn't designed to be too dynamic but it showed potential and who knows Golf 8 R line might have the measure of, lots to play for yet!

    • @andrewmcivor42
      @andrewmcivor42 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@volkswizard it IS very subjective, that's for sure! I actually don't like the "no buttons" design of the Golf 8 (but I'm a bit of a luddite when it comes to techy stuff like that...). I do think the Golf 8 dash looks better than the A3 (& classier, which suprised me).
      One thing I've learned is that it's always better to wait before jumping in with a brand new car - I prefer waiting until any initial flaws are ironed out & the manufacturers improve specs/deals, etc, to keep them moving.
      Big thing about the A3 v Golf is also that at some point, there's going to be (probably) a Golf 8 estate, no equivalent on an A3 (& I've always disliked the A4 Avant, particularly the newer versions).
      Recently bought a brand new Golf (although a 7.5 - it IS an R estate though😅) & neither the Golf 8 or the A3 review has made me regret that.

      As an additional comment - and despite my slightly nitpicky comments, we've just bought a new A3! My Wife fancied changing her Up! Beats TSi, we tried a Up! GTi, which was fine but far too expensive. We looked at an Ibiza Xcellence Lux, but then decided to go for an A1 30 TFSi Sport (with a few options). Cue a visit to our local Audi dealer & buying a new (but pre built) A3 Sportback 35 TFSi with comfort & sound pack for less than a new A1 - not a huge amount more than an Up! GTi either, which kinda shocked me .. totally different car, of course (& probably not what I'd go for myself), but surprisingly affordable route into Audi ownership. The economy of the 1.5 TFSi is a big selling point, for sure.
      If there was ever an S3/RS3 Avant, I'd definitely be interested, the lack of an Avant version is a bit miss for me. If there was, I'd certainly have seriously considered that over my Golf 7.5 R Estate...

      Sorry about this, I try and avoid TH-cam editor like the plague but I dared to use it and it corrupted the video on Saturday morning so had to edit, render and reload it which was not ideal. On plus side is a better cleaner version so worth the effort I guess and thanks for the comment as they all help

    Do those horrendous conspicuous air vents have any on/off facility? I can't see any rotary wheel.

    Does the mk8 golf really look that bad in real life, compared to the photos? I’m in Australia so I haven’t seen them in the flesh.

    The wheels look like they're an inch too wide for the tyres. They're lost in the arches.

    Does anyone know what the numbers before tfsi mean? I’ve seen it on quite a few Audi’s

      It’s goes war back and used to shared with VW but they went TSI (no difference). It’s Turbo and Fully (or Fuel depending who you ask) Stratified Injection. Basically direct injection 👍

      @@KamilJan95s Instead of engine sizes like they used to use (1.6, 2.0, etc) Audi now uses an incremental numbering nomenclature to distinguish the power output of the car. It falls into bhp power band brackets which are irrespective of engine size (you'll have to Google the bandings as I don't know), but the lower-powered variants are badged 30, then more powerful being badged 35, 40, 45 etc 👍. I think I've even bored myself writing all that.
