LIVE! Listen up kiddos. This is the real deal. What a voice. I heard it the first time around. Gladys has no equal. You knew exactly who was singing when the radio came on. Thank you for 60 years of greatness.
Wish live music and variety shows never went away. Artists promoted their recordings on TV and sang LIVE. THIS is when the music industry promoted the artist's talent!!!
That is the Ray Bloch Orchestra, sometimes referred to as the CBS orchestra. They backed up literally every performer on the show from 1948 until the series end in 1971. Sometimes supplemented but always fantastic.
Most underrated vocalist of all time. Her power and passion is so powerful it pushes the music behind, all you really hear is her. With all the great female vocalists there have been I don't think there has been anyone better that Gladys Knight. Dionne Warwick is my favorite of all time, but Gladys is Right behind.
Just thinking about all of the women sitting in the theater, at that Ed Sullivan show, riveted, in their seats, being mesmerized by Gladys' sultry, and magnificent, rendering of such a heartfelt, and soulful song. And their thinking to themselves: "yeah; mm-hmm, I know."
Gladys Knight and Her Brother Merald "Bubba" Knight and her cousins Edward Patten and William Franklin Guest Did An Incredible job with their performance back when they first started till The day Edward Patten died Then William Guest ended up dead and Merald Knight and Gladys were the only two left but their soulful voices still live on till this very year
What fantastic vocals. A true star and so lovely and talented, Gladys Knight and the pips and those very late sixties, early seventies, show stopping out-fits!
Ms Gladys sounds like the record on every live video I've watched on youtube!! THAT QUEEN'S VOICE IS SOOOOO STRONG, THE PIPS DON'T B PLAYIN N THE BACKGRND NEITHER👑!!🎶🎶🎶🎶
Other female singers during this time made it really big. Not that Gladys' didn't, but IMHO she could outperform most of them. She wasn't promoted the way others were.
She could sing names out of a telephone book & make it sound great, I'd bet!
...and she's STILL got it, 50 years later!
and JUST like this STILL, Fam!!!
Voice as smooth as melted butter...and she's so beautiful.

I miss everybody having their own voice. Radio sucks now because everything sounds identical.
Exactly, at 66 years old, I remember this. Excellence
The worst thing about this video is - that it had to end! I was so mesmerized by Ms. Knight's singing and the Pips' dance moves!
no the leprechaun outfits
I can watch the pips all day😂
@@staxoffunk1863 precisely
@@staxoffunk1863 I love those in particular. It's like Zelda cosplay.
Her lip just looks funny and it annoys me tho…

How can there be live music on tv when the singers can not sing? Todays singers do not sing.
Not really "live" here. You notice the Pips don't have mics.
Can I add… and the face was beat!!!!!!😢 beautiful
@@YaoEspirito That is a boom microphone you are hearing picking up the Pip vocals. Most of the Sullivan performers were live.
It's called playback. You record it first with an orchestra, then mime to your live vocals.
Arguably the greatest female voice in the history of pop/rock/soul. Just amazing.
Man, the recorded version is SO MUCH BETTER! That woman ROCKS that song with those powerful lyrics. ❤🖤💋
Gladys have the most warm, soulful voice ever!
I’ve always loved her. An awesome voice, she absolutely nails every song I’ve heard her sing.
Aretha’s equal. Aint many
The instrumentalization in this performance is absolutely amazing. Let’s talk about that for a moment.

@@jody8526937 the orchestra must have loved working with this song. the melody, changes etc.
One of the greatest of the greats. THIS is how it's done kiddies.
This episode was rerun on June 6, 1971, the date of the last airing of the weekly Ed Sullivan Show.
The best soul voice of all time.
Definitiv
@@monicabella7894 Gives Aretha a run for her money. Have you heard the great Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday?
@@lindahuff8976 they are more in the jazz category for me
A master class in storytelling, phrasing and sheer technique.
Oh man even Sullivan knew this was pure soul whew
Omgoodness. All I could do was shake my head thru the whole song. That woman sunggg that song .
How does she sing like that, so effortlessly 😮
She was SOOOO pretty.
Women need to sing more like this again

I remember February 1971 with Ed Sullivan and the magnificent singer Gladys Knight and the Pips ❤!
I love Gladys.. Every song she's ever made was a hit..

First of all, she is and has one of the most distinctive voices and R&b. Shout out for ESPN putting all those African Americans on his show.
Thanks, thanks

Never ceases to amaze, a live version
The outfits are horrendous, but the song is outstanding. Interesting how fashion is so tied to a place and time, but good music is timeless.
She was pregnant in the video. Might be the Saint Patrick's Day show.
I know. What were the Pips thinking with those outfits. But the song is great.
Love them Pips,great outfits!!

Gladys Knight and Pips are a great singer and genius songwriters they wrote their material.
That must've been the same circa Sandy Duncan's Peter Pan on Broadway was popular.
INCREDIBLE PERFORMANCE!
I seen her in person on Valentine's day and she sound so amazing and look so beautiful she is one of my favorite singer and the legend
