    Buffy and Angel were on different, and competing, networks starting with season 6. This made real cross-overs difficult, and is the main reason the Buffy-Angel reunion was only briefly talked about, and not shown.

    • @Henrik_Holst
      @Henrik_Holst 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      There was also animosity from The WB on how Buffy moved over to UPN so they didn't allow crossovers to happen.

      @arielcarmona6660 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      So goes the urban legend but I wouldn’t say UPN and WB were competing networks. WB had a more established foothold as I recall. It probably had more to do with the fact there were two different productions going on concurrently which made it difficult to have more frequent crossovers

      Yeah it was just to acknowledge they were still connected despite the move to a different network. Neither channel in that first season apart would allow the other to have the "reunion" on the other network or have it first.

      @@Madbandit77 Yeah, I remember initially they blamed Sarah Michelle Gellar for the move because of her comments. Everyone thought the show would be cancelled rather than be picked up by another network. But I actually like the move. It kinda reinvented the show for the last two seasons. Darker storyline but brighter visually because of the conversion to digital widescreen.

    I always laugh like that at the mummy hand holding the tongs as well. The visual just cracks me up for some reason. Same with Jonathan's magic bone (yes, I am mentally 12). Some really great comedy moments in this episode but offset by Buffy's lack of direction and feelings of hopelessness. And that is completely understandable. Everyone is very well meaning, trying to help her get her life back on track because they feel without knowing that something's not quite right.

    The Trio are supposed to be the annoyances Buffy doesn't need at this point, unfortunately. This episode is supposed to show that in Buffy's depression even the most normal of things are not right, and The Trio aren't helping the situation.

    Honestly, to go from the best season to this is just… ugh. Buffy’s best friends bring her back out of pure selfishness. Then, as soon as she gets back, they’re like, “Hey, we spent all your inherited money while you were dead and now you’re stuck with the overdue bills and we’re not going to help you out one iota. Have fun!” Willow and Tara literally move into her house and don’t contribute AT ALL. Okay, they cared for Dawn while Buffy wasn’t there, but then once Buffy is back they continue going to college, don’t have jobs, and don’t help pay the bills that THEY RACKED UP WHILE SHE WAS GONE. Why does Buffy let them live there again? Are they really her friends at this point?

      @@ClintWillowdale This was before Fox had a network. FOX was the producer of Buffy (and Angel) they sold the broadcasting rights in the US to The WB but sometime between S4 and S5 FOX decided that they wanted more money from The WB per episode (plus shenanigans from Murdock) so they did something that was completely unheard of, the started a bidding war between The WB and UPN and UPN made an offer that The WB couldn't match plus that UPN signed on for two seasons at once.
      This dick move (in the industry it was a rule that you never moved a show from the network that helped create it unless that network cancelled the show) made The WB quite angry so they did two things, #1 they started to advertise S5 as the final season and #2 they didn't allow for cross-overs to happen.

    The Groundhog Day was the result of a nerd(Johnathan) attempting to defeat Buffy. It can not be great because it is used by a child with childish intent. It is not well thought out and really solves it quickly, just like the other nerd challenges.This episode and many going forward are about how many really small events and petty people get in the way in life. We can either become entrapped in their small lives and norms or we can become individuals not brought down to the society norms of compliance. Look at her friends the episode. Willow and Tara put their values on Buffy and think she is a scholar. Xander knows what has happened but wants to fit in and fires Buffy. And where was Xander with a new employee that was getting grief from the start. Finally Giles is distracted and Anya , who probably cursed a man like this in her past, does not have any concern for Buffy. And that is the point. Our friends voice concern but don’t act or try to understand.Again it’s up to Spike to understand but he is useless to help emotionally. This is a sneaky episode to further show the distance between the Scoobys and Buffy and that Spike is the only one that Buffy can relate. Another step in a great season.

    It does feel like Buffy could probably do the construction thing pretty well, just try it again now that she knows people won't be messing with her. Or let the demon nibble on one of her sexist coworkers a little AND then save him. Hell these days she could just do the fiver thing and lift heavy things for people moving and such.
    I know it's mostly a comedy bit and she said she didn't want to do retail anyway in the previous scene so you don't feel too bad ultimately but Anya saying "oh we'll just take it out of your pay" and Giles responding awkwardly with "Oh I'm sure Buffy would understand that" is like.... testing the limits of "quirkiness" I think and going a bit far for the joke.
    Like obviously the episodes kind of hitting the "life sucks for Buffy" thing extra hard but I feel like either Giles would quietly go "no seriously Anya, lay off Buffy on her first day and when she's just been resurrected from the dead" or Buffy would be within her rights to say either "no, you can eat that cost. It was a mistake" or since Anya has suggested charging people for saving their lives earlier in the episode, "Ok, take that out of the wages on my training shift, fair, fair annnnnnd you can put in your first installment in the exciting new "you're living in a world that solely exists due to Buffy" payment plan."

    So Spike had nothing better to do with Buffy than take her to kitten poker. I honestly don't believe it. This is rather just some teen humor.
    We see that he stopped asking her to be with him a long time ago already. But he still loves her and tries to be friends with her when she needs this emotional support now. By the way he behaves absolutely like a human being. Trying to provide her support without asking for anything and expecting anything. That's what she needs now. So I believe he can find better things to do with her or show her. At least this he knows, how to take care of a girl, he did it with Dru, providing her everything she asked for and doing everything for her. That's in his character. To please a woman that he loves. Which he will be doing later here too.

    • @Junejane4
      @Junejane4 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      What I suggest instead.
      Even if they want it to be a bar, okay, then I suggest them stay there, continue conversation, Buffy continues having drinks and at some point she would want to dance. Just relax because she is tired of all the things in her life and alcohol helps her forget about it. Spike could watch her and maybe at some point come to her and try to join. She lets him first (she is drunk and she kind of likes his company now) but then she gets scared of it and runs away trying to find and excuse. I can see that happening.
      This will also make their next meeting a bit awkward and this way it will provide a good (!) reason why Buffy misunderstands Spike when he speaks about one thing but she thinks that he is asking her out. This will perfectly fit in the plot later. Taking their story in that season to the next level.

    The sociology lecture Buffy attends always bugs me because it's not actually deep or clever.
    Parroting jargon that just describes the theory and poses no interesting questions or interpretation...
    It ALWAYS bothers me that this is the representation of intellectual stimulation that Buffy is exposed to, despite having NO WAY to engage with the subject. They may as well have been speaking a foriegn language and expecting her to keep up.
    I have a friend sitting an advanced economics degree. She'll occasionally send me some work to read, bc English is her second language, but many of her assignments are given in English. Half of my feedback is asking which definition of a particular word or phrase is pertinent, bc without the context of her lectures my guess work isn't actually helpful. And my respectful contribution of "hang them all" (bankers etc) isn't admissible :P
    She does not expect me to know her subject well enough to critique her answers or contribute & she provides me with the context I need to help her edit and proof read. (I'm essentially acting as the idiot in "explain it to an idiot" and if I can understand her answer, she must be doing something right)
    The fact Willow doesn't even TRY to do this just annoys me bc it's pretty damn self centred and myopic. She SHOULD be smarter than that!
    Buffy the Builder is awesome, bc it betrays both the machismo of many male dominated work places... AND how that despite such obviously "negative" things... they're not actually as bad as some assume. Sure, they rag on Buffy, but it's not particularly malicious, and the later denials and fairly obviously quite normal. "sure, this small woman killed some demons while I cowered" is hardly an admission a person will make if they want to sound sane :P
    I just liked that Buffy assumes the grouchy guy will hate her & Xander tells her he was impressed. A little nudge to remind us that Buffy's insecurities don't ALL come from her return, and that sometimes she can assume the worst when it is not true.
    Retail Buffy takes the cake though, because customer support is endlessly frustrating, nm the workplace :P
    A brilliant episode.
    I know a lot of people hate the Trio, but I've ALWAYS loved the juxtaposition of the seriousness of Buffy's arc in this season, and the absurdity of the villains... along with WAY more actual horror imo. The humanity of the evil makes it so much worse when it hits those bleak moments.

    Without doubt The Trio are so irritating at this point, especially Andrew. I get exactly what people saying about them at this point, as they are not lending to the seriousness of the storylines. As if Buffy didn't have enough to cope with, now we have these goons messing with her life. Spike bringing Buffy to the poker game for kittens brings some light relief.
