  • Demonstrates how to set up a MIDI foot controller to manage mutes across Channels, Buses and FX Returns from the stage on a Behringer XR18 digital mixer.
    Using an expensive PEAK MIDI Controller was my solution for allowing controller over mixer parameters.

    Old video but still relevant. Helped me set up some midi controlled mute groups for my FX. I play guitar/run sound for our band. This will help me from running to the board between songs when we chat with the crowd.
    Thank you!

    Nicely done, Joe! I've got a StudioLogic MP117 by Fatar, which is a one and a half octave MIDI footpedal I used to simulate Taurus pedals in a Zeppelin tribute band. i'm going to give it a try.... and I also have a couple Digital Music Corp (now Voodoo Labs) Ground Control pedals that don't look as cool, but will work. These can be found often for $50 to $80 used if someone needs a used 12-button controller. We used three of them for lighting control several years back, with a MIDI Merge pedal from MIDI Solutions, so any of us could make changes to the light show. Thanks for the information!

    Is your MIDI foot controller connected by MIDI to the XR18, or to your tablet via USB MIDI? Also which app are you using - X AIR or Mixing Station? I thought the MIDI setup has to be done on the app (in the MIDI settings pages), not only on the MIDI foot controller.

    • @jmkmusicpedals
      @jmkmusicpedals  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was connected directly to the XR18's MIDI DIN. There are settings that enable the MIDI receive channel of the XR18, yes. I believe that was all I had to set. Not sure if I had to set those via the App or the desktop software, but the configuration is stored in the XR18 itself once this is done and you don't need to have the app or software connected, just the MIDI Controller straight into the XR18.

    Hello Joe. Video very helpful, but I have another challenge and hoping you can help me out. I’m the drummer, sound tech and front man, so I want a simple way to MUTE the effects on my MR18. Part of my drum kit is the good old Alesis D4, so I’d like to mute the effects by quickly hitting a drum pad and save the time of reaching over to my MacBook and mouse over to the mute tab. I have read the Alesis manual, but I have never used midi in all my years of playing, so I could really use some ideas. Thanks so much.

    • @jmkmusicpedals
      @jmkmusicpedals  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First thing you want to know is if the Alesis can send MIDI commands out in response to hitting a drum pad.
      If it can do that, then you also want to know if the command is one that the mixer recognizes.
      There are different kinds of commands and a drum module more typically deals with Note Commands. There are ways to convert a Note Command into any other command using an additional box called an Event Processor.
      Then you also have to figure out how to make it toggle (assuming you want to MUTE and then UNMUTE).
      The easiest thing to do would be to get the smallest MIDI Stomp Box you can find capable of transmitting and toggling any sort of command and use that instead (you'd have to step on a switch). I can point you to the Morningstar MC-3 as a possible option.
      Actually, since you are a drummer, you might also be interested in JMK CLOCKstep. It can do the necessary MIDI Toggle Command, plus it also syncs the timing of synths, performs count-ins and also sends out notes for having a metronome/click track. But if you don't want any of that, then the Morningstar MC-3 definitely.
      Disclaimer, I make the CLOCKstep.

      @@jmkmusicpedals Thanks so much! I see that now; my D4 produces note commands, so I will look into an event processor. Hitting a drum pad is my preference, but if I can’t get that to work, the midi switches you mentioned will do the trick. Really appreciate your time.

    You mention understanding CC numbers from 0-31 by just looking at the mixer. Could you plz offer more detail? Also, is it possible to mute one effect while unmuting another with one button?

    • @jmkmusicpedals
      @jmkmusicpedals  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think I said that just because the CC numbers count up in the order that that tracks are? It's been a minute since I made this video. You should have no problem programming a single switch to MUTE 1 track and UNMUTE another if your MIDI Controller allows it.

      @@leonimpala4808 You want one that can perform Toggle actions. The updated Peak controller does that (the one they sell now in this same size) and definitely the Morningstar one. There are others, but those are the most affordable at a smaller size.

    Good video- can you make it so the button press turns off ALL of the effects on all channels, or will it only work on one input channel (so, one mic for example)?

    • @jmkmusicpedals
      @jmkmusicpedals  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think if you want to turn off all effects for all channels, you can just send a command to mute each of the fx returns. There are 4 of them, so you may have to send 4 commands. I haven't tried that.

    • @jmkmusicpedals

    Hi Joe, thanks for the info! I have a tricky question coming your way.
    My band and I will be running backing tracks through a Cymatic utrack 24 into the X32, all in our rack. Do you know if it’s possible to make the effects on the x32 trigger in and out automatically using the Cymatic?

    • @jmkmusicpedals
      @jmkmusicpedals  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The feature list for Cymatic says that it can playback standard MIDI files, so presumably you could have a MIDI "song" file with the commands embedded to control the x32 at a specific time in the song.

    • @jmkmusicpedals
      @jmkmusicpedals  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Okay, grabbed the manual and it seems loading snapshots should be a breeze. Just send the MIDI Program Change command, 1-64, to load any of the 64 snapshots. You can do that with even the most basic of MIDI foot controllers.

Can i change to the number 6 for the mute in the beringer or i need to leave the CH 1, 2, and 3 always free for the mixer? There is a solution for tap delay. Not direkt tapping, but setting the delay time value is posible via SysEX. So you can tab in an arduino and send the result to the mixer.
