Are We Headed Towards Population Collapse?

  • With every passing year, more and more couples who call themselves “DINKS” are opting to skip having kids in order to simply enjoy each other’s company and spend their time, how THEY want. But is there a broader question to consider beyond our personal desires? The grim reality we're hurtling towards isn’t overpopulation… Underpopulation due to plummeting birth and fertility rates is the new nightmare lurking in the shadows.
Joining me today are my friends Malcolm and Simone who are the hosts of the Based Camp Podcast and are working on the cutting edge of the pro Natalist movement @SimoneandMalcolm

As a 33yo male from the midwest that wants to have a whole horde of children, watching what my mom did to my dad in "family" court and losing almost everything I had fighting my daughter's mom in court, I'm terrified to even date because fathers aren't valued anymore.

As a single guy in the West nearing his 30s with no special skills or degrees, the prospect of being able to afford children, or even buy property on which to raise those children, seems completely unattainable, even if I were to find the right partner to do so.
I work a simple job, part time. I don't feel motivated enough to work more than that. Why exert myself when the pay won't add that much quality of life, a d will not make much difference in terms of bigger life goals?
On top of that, low-end jobs are just not all that respected by a lot of members of the opposite sex.
If these factors were no issue, I'd probably plan to have 4-5 children, who knows, maybe even more. I'd love to have kids, but it really seems like society is set up to discourage people from doing so.

You don’t want to be the old guy in the club… and don’t underestimate the joy kids bring… imagine being the most in love you’ve ever been in your life… but take out all the physical thoughts that went along with that feeling. You’re left with the purest love you’ll ever feel… and when you’re old, grey and longing your youth, you have your kids to keep you connected to what that was.

I enjoy life in solitude I have my Sign other and we spend the time together. And if you people think that when you have kids will love you or take care of you when you are old because they owe you that . That is the first sign that you should not have children. My wife was the same before going part-time to look after the kids. Anymore mouths to feed, and I can't afford mortgage repayments. The problem is not just people's attitudes to kids. Hi. Millennial here. I had my one and only daughter when I was very young and I can tell you exactly why this is happening, at least in the United States.
Our lives have become unbearably expensive and stressful and that has translated into children being a burden that people don’t want to bear. You need two incomes in order live comfortably. If you do this and then have kids, your life becomes nothing but work and taking care of your children. Not only that, but the expenses surrounding those children and the number of things you have to be concerned about and worried about it ridiculous.
If you look at periods of time when people had a lot of children. Let’s say the 1950s, for example. The husband would work (almost any job). That would provide enough for a house for their family, where their wife would stay home and take care of those kids. This allowed for both the security of stable housing and allowed free time for both the father and the mother.
If we look at today, you have both parents working, school schedules that don’t align with work schedules, an insane amount of money for child care to remedy the schedule issue, even more time commitment to support this lifestyle, zero free time for either parent, renting and the constant fear of layoff and housing insecurity, etc.
In short, this is why almost none of us are having kids. The fact that the governments of the world allow us all to be forced into this hellscape of an existence and then continue to insist that we have children, is exactly why our population will collapse. The cherry on top of this is that most of us know this. It’s a giant middle finger to the upper class that has pushed us to the breaking point.

    • @LGreen_house
      @LGreen_house 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

I'm going to push back a little. Me and my husband used to live up north, and now live further south. We both worked until we had a child, because he is special needs. We are able to live on one income even with all the therapies etc. Many mom's I know with special needs kids don't work as well. I know every situation is different, but it is possible, and I know many millennials in the area who make a good living.

The majority of the population of my home country is mostly elderly people, but once they have all passed away there are millions of new homes. The main factor why many millennials aren't interested in having families is simply that they can't afford a house or big enough apartment.

Having kids is a hard sacrifice on a level that mist people who want kids have no idea until its too late. People have always been too immature to have kids. I think the stigma that young parents face in society also contributes to young couples not having children. I believe that the current order of focus on your career first and then transition to family life is the wrong way around. The human body is made to have children young, if society can provide the structure and support to make having children easier and then move towards a career after having children this would have so many benefits both to the population issues as well as to stability in a person's career. No more pausing your career to have children and then hoping you can re-enter the work force at the same place you left it

I think this battle of population collapse won’t be won. All our growth up to this point by all metrics has led to this. It was inevitable, a natural part of our journey. We come we grow, we peak and we are now beginning to get to the top of the roller coaster of our human story. Very soon the rollercoaster will begin heading down the slope.
If humans collectively were an individual that individual would be approaching the peak of its career, and now it’s approaching middle age.
Spiritually the systems of society have to collapse (as we currently know it) in order for us to begin the next chapter in humanity which is for INDIVIDUALS to evolve to the greatest level of self awareness, that is the final frontier. We have had tribes, we have had societies, but the true empowerment of the individual can only occur when collective structures break down as we know them.

Our cities will become senior citizen centers.
Honestly, it will probably be a good thing. People dont realize how many jobs are about to be deleted and consolidated by "AI." Work will primarily become physical labor crafts, caregiving, and DIY prototyping.
If enough caregivers aren't available, the young working class will be taxed into oblivion.
People will move away from unbalanced, inefficiently planned US cities as Starlink-akin constellations provide services to cheaper rural areas. The new AI tech is also part of whats making this move to rural possible, as it is remarkably good at logistical planning and better compression for satellite internet.
I actually think this more focused population in rural areas will lead to higher happiness. I do worry about the outlook the healthcare givers will have on life, i expect them to be the population living in in the suburbs between cities and countryside.

Something to note is that overpopulation benefits the rich, to have limited jobs for a large population means people are willing to work for less. Furthermore CEO’s can pay less. This also increases the demand of the product simply because there’s more people.
A lot of the disadvantages of overpopulation we have commodified, like how crime rates increase with bigger populations thus benefitting the prison industrial complex
Population collapse is a natural response to worsening social conditions and is not because people aren’t “emotionally immature” or “lazy”. If you tell someone they are lazy they will work 10x harder just to prove they are not, if you tell someone they are emotionally immature they will strive harder to be mature to the point they would starve rather than steal food.

People should have the right to do whatever they want if they are consenting adults but I wish the technology didn’t exist and I believe it’s such a waste. The main reason I’m against these things is because if you have it in fertile couple or a gay couple or whatever the situation is that they can’t reproduce but they can use surrogacy or IVF or artificial womb or whatever the technology is it exacerbates the other problem. That is we always have and we always will have either unwanted children or children due to other circumstances that need parents and need families. @@SimoneandMalcolm Thank you so much for responding! My girlfriend and I are planning to get married within the next two years, and we’re very open to the amount of children. Having come from poor families, we know the financial difficulties of having to form families, but we’ve always looked at the Abrahamic family-to-tribe-to-nation model as a positive structure to help humanity.
Especially now with the heavy decline in teaching people how to be proper human beings, I think it’s necessary to at least contribute a family that can become a positive impact to society.

I’m 23, almost 24. I know for sure I want to have kids but I want to also be sure I don’t rush that process. Making sure I find the right partner who wants to raise my kids the same way I do. My partner is going to be the mother of my children so I view potential relationships with that at the back of my mind. I also feel I still have to work on myself before I have kids.

Peter Zeihan has been preaching this for years... and predicting the downfall of Russia, China, and Germany. According to him, the US is not that far behind.

Yup, though (as the guy being interviewed in this) I think Zeihan sometimes undersells the scale of what is happening (and that is saying a lot given how alarmist he comes off to some).

Predictions are not always right. I just can't see how it will be right. When there is no labor - corporations will need to pay more for labor. Right now, the rich use the money we put in the bank to finance things to make them richer. When the bank can't give that much money it is going to cost more. High population is only good for the rich.

I’d love a kid or two. It’s just not feasible/financially worth it right now. I make just enough to pay my bills and have a little bit for fun.

If they did, you and I would very likely not be alive today 😂

@@skylinefever Or maybe these things hinged upon the discovery and mass use of certain things (one example is oil for industrialization) that could only come about at certain points in human history or happened randomly. By your logic, we should go back to a time where kids worked 15 hours with their parents on a farm and parents lost 4 out of their 7 children.
