A Jacked Crossfitter Shut Down My Half Guard

  • In today's video I share a quick story from a BJJ training session with a Crossfit athlete who was also a college wrestler, and has also did some Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. Because of his wrestling base he definitely gave me a unique look and shut down my Half Guard game. Every time I'd come up for a sweep I just couldn't quite finish it. Instead I had to switch up to Butterfly Guard to get a sweep.
    I share this with you because the problem solving mindset I have when I train with people like that is not the one I've always had. And if you're a BJJ practitioner yourself you definitely need to maintain that mindset, especially against people with certain attributes that give you trouble.
    Here's his instagram page in case you want to check him out: / blacksmifff
    I say this because all to often I hear BJJ players make excuses as to why something doesn't work like, "Oh they're just strong." You don't want to be one of these people.
    I also give you an update on how my weight loss is going. Currently I'm down to about 200-202 in the morning and have lost around 10lbs and it's steadily declining. More on that to come.
    Hope you enjoyed the video.
    -Chewy
    **Btw when I said overhead press I meant overhead squat.

    As a 55 year old blue belt who competed in other sports over might life, I have found that I BJJ is a great challenge for many reasons. The biggest one for me is finding the combination of strength, experience, agility and skill to compete with my bjj partners. It's not always skill, or technique, or speed, or strength but at time one of the more than the other. When I'm beaten in a roll, I look to find which one of those I needed to strengthen for the next time we roll. I wish I found this earlier in life.

    So true, the amount of times I’ve heard people use that crutch “he is using strength” well yeah, same with every other person you will encounter outside of the mats, BJJ is a great equalizer, but if your extremely weak, and lack cardio conditioning it is not going to equalize as much, bottom line. Your returns on the art will be limited,

    • @counterkidnapping1737
      @counterkidnapping1737 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed
      When you're in a self defense situation your attacker will use raw power brute force and only strength no techniques included. That's why you must condition your body and polish your techniques. Now imagine you encounter 6'2 220lbs dude on the street and he wants to fight you. What do you do?

    Congrats on the weight loss! I dropped from 217 to 184 at my lowest this year, I'm back up to 195 but whatever. I'll get back on track after mid terms.
    I grew up doing a little bit of judo, a little bit of wrestling, completed my army time (6 years in the Ranger Battalion) where CrossFit was really popular - all before getting into BJJ. I was NOT spectacular at any one of these things but it gave me a comfortable athletic base. As a purple belt I jokingly tell people now that I don't really do Jujitsu, but wrestle with cheat codes.

      There's always some older guys in jujitsu class. It's great for weight loss too. Hell it's good to preserve muscle and increase flexibility as well. I'd highly recommend it.
      Younger stronger guys won't go too hard on you. If they're experienced they'll match your power and work through technique. This will prevent you from getting hurt and allow you to learn technique as well.

    I'm a pretty strong guy, wrestled in highschool and have done bjj off and on since I was in 16. Im a pretty tough roll for most people but they always just dismiss me as just being strong. I think that's a lazy mentality. I give purple-brown belts a hard time. I can't necessarily tap them out but I can avoid submissions and maintain dominant positions. Just kind of annoying when they hit me with the "You're just strong."

  • @xnico
    @xnico 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Chew man, do you have any advice. I'll try to keep it short. I used to train bjj in California years ago. Took some time off for crazy health reasons. I've been back at in my hometown(pa) for about 8 months. Talked my buddy in coming with me.
    He's got 30+ lbs on me, and he's way too aggressive. Every time we roll, I get injured. Unless i put the strength on him and throw technique out the window. I have a TBI and an equilibrium disability.
    He'll say "let's flow roll" then spaz and go way too hard. What do I do. I love the guy, I've known him for over a decade, his family is close with my family but I dont want to have to out muscle him just to mitigate injury.

    i have a question for you if you can en-light me as always

    Hopefully , i can get my blue belt soon !Anyway , im big fan of mma , most specially ufc , I have join my gym and tough we were gonna do mma , i didnt what BJJ actually was.
    Now i love my Bjj , however , it's a lot of lalala , especially with the Gi , i am not convinced about the Gi , Anyway i went to see my coach today(she) and told her if possible to add a class of mma
    She was a bit anxious , she told me that she like our culture in the gym and that mma will attract fighter , and they dont have the same mentality than BJJ guys and often tried to hurt their partner at the gym . she told me she doesnt like this attitude at all , same as me , i don't like bad training partner who try to hurt you over winning the roll
    Now im stuck , i love my BJJ, but as i evolve , i need to have my style , and i want to mix it with strike . How can i improve Coach ?? i totally understand her point of view but i refuse to believe than all the UFC Heroes does not train in safe environment ? that pp have to hurt other in order to learn mma ? i m a bit lost on that one... please advice .
    Love your channel and also respectful mind set ,you remind me a bit of my coach too
    Peace

    If say "Oh, you are just strong" there is nobody left to roll with for me... :D BJJ for me is figuring out how to survive as a fragile old man against always stronger trainingpartners.

    What weight lifting program do you use that doesn't leave you too burnt out for bjj training? I'd love to know the details

    I did Thai Boxing for 7 years and have only been grappling for 2 years and remember my first grappling session. I was tapped out about 10 times by the same triangle😂 I said to the guy I was grappling with who was a purple belt, you can tap me with your triangle just show me how to defend it. The best grapplers are the ones who flow while grappling not trying to put you to sleep, there is time for hard sparring but people should recognise a newer member.

      I wrote about that in the description. I misspoke. He over head squatted nearly 400 (I think it was 385). His max clean and jerk is recorded around 360 I believe.

    Brother im 37 years old. I was a power lifter but I'm now doing circuit traing, you think I'm to old for BJJ? I'm very flexible for size and stay in good shape year round. I'm im about 240lbs at 5'11 (I could afford to lose a few lbs lol. But I'm not anywhere fat). Going through a divorce. I got cleaned up, financially. I'm back to square 1 in life. But in a sick way, I feel excited about it. I pass by some classes all the time going to work and watch them roll. I never went in to ask for pricing but on the phone it was something like 300 a month. You think I'm waiting my time fantasize about learning bjj and competing layer on?

    hey chewy, I have an issue. My gym shut down during the pandemic. I worked and trained there and talk to my coach from there still. They are trying to reopen. Another gym in my city just opened up and i dropped by and had a good time rolling there, so i signed up. I told my former employer and coach about this via text and he seemed pretty displeased. I told him that it was just temporary until he can open his doors again (which was really my plan) but i get the impression that he feels i have betrayed him. I am 17 and have done what i can to monetarily support the gym during the pandemic, but I can only do so much. What should I do? I like this new gym but still want to be good with my coach and former employer because hes been very good to me.

      Saving this one. But in the meantime keep training. If your coach isn’t going to open and there is another gym that is. Train.
