This is so obviously Chris Poland (the guy I may have THE most respect for in the history of Megadeth. Met him multiple times, and he's a freaking fantastic dude).
I agree Poland helped form megadeths "sound" in the beginning. I heard many guitarists saying his sound is "weird". I agree. It is " weird" in the best way possible. Marty is outstanding! I can't help to associate megadeths "sound" with Chris Poland
This original lineup was the best ever Megadeth. Gar and Chris were seasoned jazz pros who brought their honed fusion skills to create a unique blend of jazz fusion thrash never seen before or after. Good Mourning Black Friday is a thrash metal masterpiece. I'm so glad I saw this lineup in 87 live. It's a pity they just didn't stay together. Drugs played a big part in the disintegration of this ensemble. Too bad they never play this one live anymore. I don't think any of the future players could!
@@timshatto506I’m pretty sure he can. He even said a few years ago on Twitter that he expects to bring this song back to the setlist at some point. Fingers crossed.
I don’t know if im the only one who notices that dave changed very very very much like he today is another person from back in the day, the dude looks like a devil on earth before, now he’s super chill (most of the times) and even how he looks to the others changed, when you see footage from the 80s it looks like he’s cynical when someone is talking to him, the 90s until now it’s like he’s more focused and looking more like in the future, i think he didn’t fear the death until he get sober and after that he had a child and everything changed, plus he left Diana before
In Megadeth you actually HEAR THE BASS Guitar.... Unlike other's .. Dave Ellefson is an amazing Bass player!! You can see Gar in a video...This is awesome!!! Best Megadeth Lineup...besides Menza and Marty Thanks for this video!!
Yeah you're right haha! These guys used to be very dangerous junkies LOL! Right, they got on well in 2004. As a result, Chris has recorded the guitar parts in the System Has Failed album.
RiP Gar, Damn they were jacked up. Not enough energy to sing at the end and Chris botched the solo cause he's usually spot on. He's such a great guitarist
In the intro Chris seems to get lost after a abit, and Dave goes over to him to help him find his place in the song's progression. I thought that Chris was just a little high and was trying to improvise abit. I thought surely he could bring it back, but just the moment before (or the millisecond after) Dave starts to walk over to him, it is clear that he is probably chest deep in the weeds at that moment, and it becomes apparent that he is (at least believes he is). When he begins starIng intently right at Dave's fret board for few seconds (not playing) u puntil right after he figures how and where in the intro's progression he should be playing and when to jump back in, but by that time it's to late and he just does the ending lick of his opening solo.
Dave and Chris would have fights. Apparently Dave broke a toilet seat off the floor and somehow snapped a bed in half. Also ,Gar use to whack him with drumsticks during the concert and then Dave would bash his drums at the end.
Well…. I hope I eventually DO find a decent live video performance of this one because I love it and I get a little euphoric everyone it starts in the studio album….. smh
So, I didn't know Opeth but I'm gonna give them a try! I'm always investigating about old school metal bands that haven't made it. Some of them are real good! As regards other musical styles, well, I don't buy jazz, blues or classical albums but, whenever it comes to listen to these genres, I enjoy it quite a lot. I like blues most of all. You know, these genres meant the roots of that metal we both have in our veins! Classical's also amazing! If you like Yngwie, you enjoy classical too!
I'd rather take this one than rust in peace. RIP lineup seems to be more removed from the true spirit of Megadeth. Marty once said that in Megadeth, your color pallet when playing is gun metal gray, which I can't get out of my head when hearing the RIP eras songs. They're great songs, but I don't know man, the exotic scales Marty used in Megadeth were cool but it just felt like it didn't belong in Megadeth. With this lineup the color pallet when playing is all kinds of shit like reddish Orange, muted purple, pink, red, etc.
Yes, you're right and I was wrong all the way. I thought he was Jeff because, at least this vid, at the distance, they look alike. Besides, I didn't see Gar on the drums. Now that I have checked out dates and that I have seen Gar beating the drums, I must admit that you all made me eat my words. ZZHUH made me realised that I was wrong a couple of days ago and now you're doing so. Thanks for the correction!!! Rock on!!! Cheers!
Hey it is Poland because this happened in Febuary 6, 1987. Young joined the band with only two weeks left in the recording schedule for so far so good so what...
Id die to see them play this song once more before retirement but to be honest it wouldn't be even close this good. Shouldve done it back in the 2000s while they still could. And its all because of Dave's fucking cancer. The most unfortunate thing, for Dave, the band, and the fans. Lets hope Dave makes a good enough comeback for the next album. Hail Megadeth🤘
Rock on brother! Cheers mate :) This video is proof that they were smashed and still played the song better than a cover band. I mean Chris kind of messed that solo up and they were either fiending H or were just fucked up. Still great, I wish I was around and saw them live playing Black Friday, Bad Omen, and The Conjuring. They don't play those songs live anymore sadly and they're super bitching. And Poland is an amazing guitarist and I prefer him over Young any day of the week
Haha, yes. The guys were totally outta control haha! Their hearts were filled with anger in those days so that, after taking drugs, whatever the kind may be, the guys turned really mad LOL.
Hey do you play any instruments by the way? Also know any new bands or albums that are dope or thrashy or progressive. But anything really would be cool like rock or whatever bro. Doesn't always have to be metal you know? But I love metal. That's like one of my veins. But I love all forms of music including jazz, classical etc. Like Opeth at all? Lots of dynamic shifts, interesting guitar riffs and cool harmonies.
Yeah and Liar was dedicated to Chris Poland because he would sell Dave's guitars for drugs. LOL. Dave and Chris got on well in 2004 and Chris has been fine now.
I can name you some old school hard rock/metal bands which were not that popular. Anyway, I don't know where you're from but, if you're from the U.S or England, it's gonna be quite strange that you don't know the bands I can mention to you as I'm from Argentina. You know, being from the U.S or England make easier to know most of those bands as both countries were the birthplace of the rock genre in general. I enjoy better British metal though. There're also great German bands too!
Why Dave always played the acoustic intro with distorted electric guitar is beyond me. It totally ruins the intro in these live performances. Couldn't he have at least played on a clean tone or rolled back the volume knob to clean it up?
Hey there! No, unfortunately I don't play anything : ( . You know, I'd like to be a skillful guitarist like M.A.B, among others, but I don't have the skills to play any instrument. You realize when you do not have the talent to do it. So, I get my kicks listening to music! I like hard rock and the old school metal, which is in my veins too! To be honest, I don't listen to the newest bands. I dunno why I have no feeling with the newest bands. Maybe, it's 'coz I like the old stuff so much...
Yeah, haha. He was sky high for many years but I think that, today, he is rather clean as Dave also is, let's say. The first Megadeth line-up was kinda self-destructive. Gar has passed away some time ago. Dave and Chris had one foot in the grave due to all kinda excesses. Anyway, the one in this vid is Jeff Young.
Are you positive mate? I can only make out his hair lol. And to his hair looks like Chris'. I mean I know So far so good was in 88 but when in 87 did Jeff join then? Anyway he botched the solo pretty bad bro. Even if it was his own improv. I'm not saying I would of smoked him doing a solo but damn that sounded like a train wreck
No. He is not Chris Poland. He is Jeff Young who is the guy who appeared in So Far, So Good, So What!. That's way he could have changed the solo a little bit. However, there is a strong possibility that he could have been a little high too haha : P
Yep, he's Jeff Young, the guitar player who only recorded So Far, So Good, So What! It seems that in this gig he was still a Megadeth member. If you have a look carefully, you'll see that the guitar player is Jeff Young. Cheers!
RIP GAR SAMUELSON!! One of the best thrash drummers around!!!
Gar samuelso jazz metal
Totally agreed!!!
The best!

@timshatto506 He could play it. It's just that the singing might be difficult.
@carloschong2795 really?!?! Fuck yeah it'll kick ass! If he can sing it in the lower register I'll still be happy. 😊
Best metal song ever.
Walamonga 1313 agreed👍
Yup
Fucking yeah
Definitely! Blows me away every time I hear it, whether the original studio recording or live. Absolute insanity!
Yo love the profile pic🤘🤘
Man you can tell Cris Poland out of all the Megadeth guitarists .. Marty is my favorite but this guy was something else
Totally agree. As unique as Marty is, Chris Poland is on another level
Something truly special happened with this lineup... the first two albums are the just masterpieces
Gar and Chris drugged out of their minds. Sadly this is one of the few live videos of Gar that's out there... :(
Maybe he doesnt feel good? Maybe somethings not rite, somethings probably come over him. W-T-F-I-T-?!?!?!
its chris and gar but probably one of their last shows with megadeth
This lineup way tremendous and absolutely unstoppable. Way better than the rust in peace lineup in my opinion. Wish the drugs hadn't gotten in the way
Even when Chris is high out of his mind you can still tell its him.
2:38... gar beams a fan in the head with a drum stick. Lol
well seen
THE OLDER MARSHALL WOULD HAVE DISTORTION EVEN ON CLEAN CHANNEL
Good eye!!
I've never noticed that I wonder why
THIS SONG AND MY LAST WORDS ARE THE TWO BEST SONGS FOR THE BEST ALBUM EVER
Bad omens too
ABSOLUTELY!!!!!
The whole album is a masterpiece.
I wish we could have heard one more album out of this line up
History....
This was a different Dave...
This was Megadeth!!!!

I saw Megadeth on January 17, 1988, at The Scope in Norfolk, VA. They, along with Savatage, opened for Ronnie James Dio. A kick-ass show.
Wow. Great lineup. Must have been crazy!

Thanks for this video!!
Best song in metal catalog ever. Hands down!!!! Tota masterpiece!!!
Wrong, Jeff never played with gar. Plus Jeff has never sounded like 1:06, that is Polands signature lick.
Dave's solo timing was pretty horrible, but fuck it, he's dave mustaine.
this is DEFNITELY Chris Poland
You can see how stoned he is lol
Epico, para mí la mejor canción de metal

Miss heard lyrics.. Its Black friday.. You kick the devil in the balls!!! LOL
I always heard it as "SOMEBODY... took a dump on the wall" when I was a kid hahaha
C Sanchez dave was always messing up lyrics juiced up half the time back then
i wish they played this more live!
i never new megadeth visited iowa back in the day
