They had it right in the 90s. Built to last tractors that still make u smile 20-30 years later. Nice vid George quite enjoying the machine variety ur getting out at the mo
Great to see this. Brings back some good memories for me. I spent a lot of hours in the mid 80's on a JD4440 with a 4m Lely power harrow on the back trying to tackle some very stubborn dry clay land in your area. Was very slow going. Nice to see your videos. I'm from Bromham so very familiar territory!!
Have to agree about the soundtrack & the view down the bonnet 👌 nice bit of kit that is & thanks for taking us for a ride, top vid as usual George. Ta ta
We used to use a JD 8430 artic with a big pressure harrow on the back after burning the stubble, in Essex, we'd burn it all in one go back then as there was no legal requirement at the time to plough in 25 acre fire breaks, it was a prairie field of over 400 acres and all the hedges had been removed mid 80's,. The JD 843O and pressure harrow could reduce the burnt stubble to a seed bed in one pass, taking about a day. The farmer only ever worked the top 2 to 3 inches of soil. After they banned stubble burning the farm bought a 500hp Challenger and a 13 furrow plough. They use a Sumo now behind a newer Challenger. It's all on heavy clay. That's a great video love the big John Deeres.
Hello. Definitely a drivers tractor. Great when your in them but a pain to jump in and out of a lot. Loved the 2850 pocket rockets great views out the back window to. 😊
back in the 80s/90s had sg2 cab on 3050 , 3040, 2850 and 2140, great solid tractors, i loved the sg2 cab still do, that 6 cylinder sounds so good, 3650 was about 114 hp
What a great video. I spent many happy hours in a 4040 and 4240 when I was young so this brought all the memories back. And like you said that sound amazing.
Thanks for taking the time and trouble to put out this excellent video George and Liz, superb John Deer Classic tractors working hard - the sound was amazing!! Get one on your Christmas list George!! Lovely machines!
In my opinion the greatest era of John deeres (apart from the 6000 and 10 series) The 50 series was also amazing. My dad has a 3050 with the turbo kit on it , it sounds amazing!
Great video George 👌 Driven 30 40 50 series since a boy, still have a 3050 on the hedge cutter, split screen never noticed it as you said inline with the stacks! Learned to drive on a David Brown 1690 with bolt on wooden blocks on pedals so I could reach the pedals ! On the much wish list would be a 3650 Pip 👌👍
Great video George! I also have logged many hrs in many different versions of the tractors in the video. My first tractor when I started farming for myself was a 4430. Essentially all those tractors were sized up 4020 deeres. Front wheel assist was an afterthought. Once deere came out with the 8000 series they had a tractor designed to be front wheel assist, and could put the power to where it's needed. Thanks again for the great work 👍.
The 4240S was the tractor that was on my wall as a kid!! It’s my dream tractor even today nothing beats the noise of these big Deere’s. It’s the first thing I’d buy if I won the lottery 🤞 great video
It’s always great when you are out on/in a classic tractor 🚜 George and to see them working the fields like they used too, I wonder what you will be doing next. TaTa for now and see you next time.
Had a 4240s which came from a sale in Uttoxeter, great honking thing which a lot of people might disagree with me but I'd much prefer our JD 6420. Much more comfortable and easy to use and the sound gets boring after a while.
Awesome machines, would love to have one. These old classics are not great on the road though and hydraulics may be a little lacking by modern standards but no laptop or main dealer required to fix them.
I'll have 3955 please George both lovely Tractors with the Floaters on the runner up. It's that what makes it look like beast. I use duels frow TW30 on T7. 220
Great to see the Classics? Making me feel old as I was there when the dealers introduced these new tractors. Can't figure why you guys often run with the windows open. I don't think I've ever driven any of mine with a window open but then you don't seem to have any dust there to get in the cab either.
if I can get it wrap'ed in BM red and put on Volvo BM logos I might consider to take care of the 4955 and use it as a spare tractor on nice days. :D But it's always nice to see the competitors! Haha
If I am honest I'd prefer something with a shorter wheelbase given our roads, yards and fields though out of the two though less horse power I'd go for the 4240s as it would be of more use. But given we are now coming up to our 3rd JD dealer for this area I'd probably go for one of the other makes which seem to have better continuity.
Isn’t it a 3650 which Kurt has? I’d have either a 3650,4955 or 4960 just to take to shows. All clean, restored etc if I had the money. My era growing up the same. I’d be in heaven driving all day on one.
I think he's got a 3350 but don't hold me to that! Get saving mate, you've got the room to park one. Might have to sort out getting you behind the wheel at some point 👍
When JD built tractors rather than just made them the SG Cab was a revolution when launched early in the 70`s and its long life morphed into the SG2 just shows how good it was even with the people who moan about its alleged shortcomings. Those old Waterloo Engines are the "DOGS" For me it would have to be the 4240S it would take me back in time.
Great old Green Iron, always been a distance fan of the 4955, just the RAW power and pulling ability, good to see Mrs Saunders with the Video gear in the end, thanks
They had it right in the 90s. Built to last tractors that still make u smile 20-30 years later. Nice vid George quite enjoying the machine variety ur getting out at the mo
Cheers mate, they certainly knew how to build a tractor back then👍
I've been away from farming for 20 years but by far and away my most favorite tractor to operate was the 4955. What a great tractor!
I spent many hours in a JD4440, a sound old tractor and never broke down and always started first time even on the coldest mornings, great memories.
I grew up driving a 2040s and a 3350 the straight 6 in the 3350 used to purrr, the sound and smell of ploughing with that was heaven
We bought a C reg 2140 new, it sat on a 3 half metre Maschio all of it's life, so for me that little engine had a heart of gold... RIP Dad.
That 4240S looks like it could pull a small moon 👍
We still have a 4955, with right at 4000 hours on it. Beautiful shape. Great video George
Still a very capable tractor mate, yours is barely run in! Happy birthday, hope you've had a great day Andy👍👍

Not far at all mate, out of interest who were you working for?
Before the industry went nuts with computers and electric everything, love those tractors great vid!
Well well that’s a lovely picture seeing two gorgeous big Deer’s working together lovely job George!! Love that soundtrack too
Cheers Rob👍
Have to agree about the soundtrack & the view down the bonnet 👌 nice bit of kit that is & thanks for taking us for a ride, top vid as usual George. Ta ta
Cheers Matthew 👍

Now ya talking, 4955 all day for me. 🤜👍
What marvelous sounding tractors. I'd love to drive both of them.
Great video! Awesome tractors. 4240 takes my eye I’d say
3650s my dream tractor
Awesome 4955 I would love to have one
Great video George lovely to see the older tractors and machines been used
Good to see abit of old school deere George found memories of them.
What a great video. I spent many happy hours in a 4040 and 4240 when I was young so this brought all the memories back. And like you said that sound amazing.
Cheers Phil 👍
Spent many hours in the sg2 cab on a 3050 and 4755 lovely place to spend the day and half the night, great vid
😍😍 my trusty old 4955 the very first tractor I had on my first farm when I left agg college loveumm 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Great video george, nice to see two classics working together.
Thanks for taking the time and trouble to put out this excellent video George and Liz, superb John Deer Classic tractors working hard - the sound was amazing!! Get one on your Christmas list George!! Lovely machines!
Cheers Trevor 👍👍
The thing about J,D was and in a lot of cases now is they made every component of their tractors, right down to nuts and bolts👍😃
In my opinion the greatest era of John deeres (apart from the 6000 and 10 series) The 50 series was also amazing.
My dad has a 3050 with the turbo kit on it , it sounds amazing!
More soul than any of the new tractors. T dubs and the case 1056 1455's just a great era of kit 👍
Great video George 👌
Driven 30 40 50 series since a boy, still have a 3050 on the hedge cutter, split screen never noticed it as you said inline with the stacks!
Learned to drive on a David Brown 1690 with bolt on wooden blocks on pedals so I could reach the pedals !
On the much wish list would be a 3650
Pip 👌👍
The 4240S was sitting very nicely on those great big air bags. I can't help it, I just love the look of huge tyres like that.
Great video George! I also have logged many hrs in many different versions of the tractors in the video. My first tractor when I started farming for myself was a 4430.

Thanks again for the great work 👍.
the cabs on them tractors where way ahead of any other tractor of that era lovely old things
I would love a 4650 like my dad had , I used to drive a 4455 and a 4955 they are just awesome tractors
First I worked on had a 4450 and a 4755 never got to drive them but I was ring rolling in 2wd 3130 👍
Good to see a pair of tractors like those George .
awesome vid george , loving the 4240s and her huge tyres , superb
The 4240S was the tractor that was on my wall as a kid!! It’s my dream tractor even today nothing beats the noise of these big Deere’s. It’s the first thing I’d buy if I won the lottery 🤞 great video
Cheers Andrew 👍
Well there you are George: Nothing runs like a Deere and not a puff of black smoke to be seen!
Hallo george great Cinema with the 2 John deere 4240 and 4955. The 4955 this is a strongly machine for your fields
It’s always great when you are out on/in a classic tractor 🚜 George and to see them working the fields like they used too, I wonder what you will be doing next. TaTa for now and see you next time.
You cant beat any old school tractor, nice video George
4955 best tractors ever made
Proper tractors. Great vid thanks George.
Cracking vid George ! I’m not a huge Deere John fan but those old school classics are some beasts and you’re right about that sound of the engine 🚜💨👍🏻
Green and Proud 😷🇺🇸👍👍👍👍✌️
Great video George two great classics doin a good days work 💪💪👍
Cheers Bob 👍
Had a 4240s which came from a sale in Uttoxeter, great honking thing which a lot of people might disagree with me but I'd much prefer our JD 6420. Much more comfortable and easy to use and the sound gets boring after a while.
Very good original models.50/55 series were great machines. However I was never a big fan of the SG2 cab found it quite small/enclosed.
Don’t get much better than that George 👌
Great video. One of my mates has a 4240s and a 4350.
Hi George good to see more field action, nice to watch a couple of John Deere prepping. Very good footage, stay safe see you on the next one.
Cheers Jon 👍
Loving these old school green machines, nice vid George 🙂
Sounds great. Always thought the sg2 cab was not a bad place to spend the day just buggered when the Sheppard and his dog wants a lift to the fell...
Definitely 4240s. Dad had 2 on the farm he worked at 😍
I love them both 💚💛💚💛💚💛💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻 POWER FROM WATERLOO
Great video. Keep them up👍
Hi George SG2 cabbed John Deere every one a Classic we had a 2140 for a few years Thanks again
Jd 3650 is a beautiful tractor, the farmer down the road from me still has his from once new.
Great machines and video, I prefer 4240, all time favorite together with the IH 1455, I grew up with them. Greets Stefan
Old school John on deere nice👍👍👍
Awesome machines, would love to have one. These old classics are not great on the road though and hydraulics may be a little lacking by modern standards but no laptop or main dealer required to fix them.
Has to be a old school caseih for me 1455xl
Good solid tractors them old John Deere
One of my tractors is a 3050 and is on a spearhead 565 hedgecutter, it can still do a good days work.
I'll have 3955 please George both lovely Tractors with the Floaters on the runner up. It's that what makes it look like beast. I use duels frow TW30 on T7. 220
now thats a proper tractor loads of poke and no smoke
Great video again 😀
Great 👍 video George nice 👍 sound coming from it like the two machines keep safe 👍👍🚜🚜😌😌😷😷👩🌾👩🌾🇬🇧🇬🇧🏴🏴🦌🦌🦌🦌
The 4240 wont have any trouble with those massively beefy wide tyres on
Like the video George brilliant
Great video George!
like it George the old tractor need to look at some more plz
Now I love the EU style old school JD.
I’ve recently bought a 4350, I’m finding it hard to find some parts. I’m led to believe that it shares many parts with a 4240s. Is this correct?
Very good video
Love a big old deer
Good stuff George, two very nice tractors there:):)

I don't think I've ever driven any of mine with a window open but then you don't seem to have any dust there to get in the cab either.
Not any dust this time of year, I remember that first JD was a hire tractor so was fairly new, seems a long time ago now.
You could not beat the John Deere 3050 range good tractor in the day
3640 or 3650 only about 120hp. But oh so gorgeous!!! Do you follow gerry6420? With his immaculate 2850 and recently acquired 3650 👌🏻
I'll have to check him out Rob👍
Great video George 👌🏻👍🏻
Cheers Colm 👍
if I can get it wrap'ed in BM red and put on Volvo BM logos I might consider to take care of the 4955 and use it as a spare tractor on nice days. :D But it's always nice to see the competitors! Haha
Not many Volvo BM's over this way!
Why did you not go straight across the field. Surely like that you end up with a lot of short runs? Or was the other side of the field like that.
Allways wanted a 4240s saw one a while ago should of just bought it
we had a 50 series on hire i had it on the onion lifter was a lovely tractor
If I am honest I'd prefer something with a shorter wheelbase given our roads, yards and fields though out of the two though less horse power I'd go for the 4240s as it would be of more use. But given we are now coming up to our 3rd JD dealer for this area I'd probably go for one of the other makes which seem to have better continuity.
JD 9610 for me all day long
Niiiiice 😏🤤
But the harrow must have done some work, pretty worn down 😄
lovely jd george
Still sounding good in 2024. 😊
My uncle used to own a 2140 I used every day
Love the SG2 cabs, not a fan of the powershift tho.
I was waiting for this vid George and it certainly was worth the wait 🚜👍
Cheers Nick👍
4240s has 8 stud rear hubs to take a modern wheel...rare on those
Isn’t it a 3650 which Kurt has? I’d have either a 3650,4955 or 4960 just to take to shows. All clean, restored etc if I had the money. My era growing up the same. I’d be in heaven driving all day on one.

That's a very good point Simon, back when tractors we're built.
Great old Green Iron, always been a distance fan of the 4955, just the RAW power and pulling ability, good to see Mrs Saunders with the Video gear in the end, thanks
How do you change gears in reverse and how many reverse gears has it got?
Wow that driveline takes alot ground clearance.
