ND filter vs Polarizing CPL filter, which do I use and why

  • What's the best ND filter? Maybe an ND is not what you need. Depends. People talk a lot about ND filters, but many don't realize the creative power a CPL polarizing filter holds. A polarizer is also an ND filter (about 1.5 to 2 stops) but it does oh so much more. For example, an ND darkens everything, including white puffy clouds, but a CPL filter darkens the blue sky only and leaves the clouds alone! Also, which filter brands are best? Tiffen? B&W? Polar Pro? Nope. Do I use variable ND filters? Nope. Never. Not in my world. Find out.

Another use for a CPF is to darken down a LED display - e.g. doing an indoors scene with a TV running as part of the picture. With the CPF you can darken down the light of any LED screen - i.e. the TV or home cinema flatscreen - until its brightness harmonizes perfectly with the brightness of the ambient light of the surroundings. Much easier than going through 100 menus to mess up the adjustments of the TV itself, just to stop the damn' thing from overexposing on your photo or in your video. The secret behind this is quite simple - LED displays emit linear polarized light.
(Note: this does not hold for individual LEDs - e.g. Xmas chain. But you can turn down an LED display to absolute black. Just hold a CPF - the right way round - in front of your eye and slowly turn it. The TV picture vanishes completely. Really uncanny!)

It's really fascinating on how things change based on what you place in front of the lens and what colors are being pushed into the sensor via that lens. I've net to use ND filters with photography, but I use it when I film with my C100 MKII all the time. That built-in ND filter system is really nice and I wish a lot more camera manufactures would include those in their bodies.

Hello, it is a wonderful video, thanks to share it. I need ask a question please. I have Pocket 3 for a little time. I make only documentaries in sunny places and I want to use one filter only because I don't have free time to change it. I could use a VND filter, but it causes a slight loss of video quality, so I'm thinking to put one fixed ND/PL filter on my Pocket 3. I shoot only in 4K 50p in sunny days, with what a light transparent cloud. If I want to use a ND/PL filter with a 50-400 ISO range and Automatic Exposure, is it more useful to buy a ND16/PL or ND32/PL filter? I thank you.

I've glued a 41mm UV filter on the front (as there's no thread, just right size to fit in the steps) of my Sony 405 (which you recommend, it's brilliant btw) to stop dust and dirt getting in.. with .. in the UK Bostik Sticks Like S**T (supplied in a cartridge tube) .. great stuff as it doesn't contain any solvent nastiness that hurts plastic etc.. it's an MS Rubber.. I use it with Perspex.. and it will peel off smooth surfaces if you want to remove it.
Now to get a Polarization and ND filters..
The 405 does blurry backgrounds but this will take it further..😻..

Unless ita an.ultra wide lens ! Then your looking at £100s , the coatings IR stopping nano coatings , because your using flourine coated lenses your not going to use a shot glass as a filter , or put a crappy uv filter over the lens to protect it , and lose image quality , you need top quality filters from ground super level flat glass to start with , then the coatings , chemicals evaporated onto the glass ,and sandwiched to protect the coatings , then flourine coated for light transmission, bla bla.... prices shoot up , hence putting a £20 uv filter on your lens just degrades the image , most lens hoods are duel purpose blocking light and protrude for protection .

I never really thought of different camera and lens combinations having an effect on what filters will work best so that was good to know. I use Nisi Variable ND 1.5-5 and 5-9 filters as I found them to give me the best image quality with no noticeable color cast on lenses I use or noticable X when stopped down. I used to use SLR Magic Variable ND II. It is a Variable ND with a polariser and to get the polarising effect, you just turn the whole filter, which means unscrewing it slightly from the lens. I stopped using it as it slightly softened my images and had a slight warm color cast. I have used polarising filters to remove the reflections on the surface of water so I could get photos and videos of fish and marine life in rock pools.
I don't normally use lenses that have a bigger than 77mm filter thread so I use 77mm filters and if necessary, I use Breakthrough CNC step up rings. I'd never use step down rings though due to the high chance of vignetting.
I use Variable ND filters rather than fixed NDs because I shoot log video and I want to dial in exposure exactly right with midtones at a certain IRE without changing the shutter speed or aperture and I can't always do that with fixed NDs. I mostly shoot videos' outdoors in natural lighting and the light can change quickly so if I was using fixed NDs and had to switch them out, by the time I changed NDs, the light might have changed and so will my exposure and I'd have to change filters again, but not with a Variable ND.

Great video. I try to use PL filters always in daylight (when I don't forgot it at home) but not to remove water or sky reflections but to control the light orientation before hit the sensor. Since I use the phone to film and I can't control the light, the AI get very confuse when I have the bright green and the sun is about 45º, making the image to wobble. I don't know why no reviewer spot this issue, but most cameras that the image wobbles in certain light conditions (I saw a clip with AX53 wobbling when the guy zoom (probably it would occour with the AX33-43)), if light direction is the issue, the PL will fix that.

Excellent content. It's been very helpful. For shooting nature videos and views of the ocean (without much movement) with a smartphone would you recommend using a VND and CPL filter in one or just the CPL filter alone? I want to use the CPL filter, but I'm wondering whether the combined version with a VND (that some filters have) would be a better option than using the CPL filter alone. What are your thoughts?

Pardon me for asking... I recently started to shoot a couple of local ultra running events during my down time... I noticed that I'll be having trouble if the run was during noon/mid day and my pictures were severely overexposed. What filter I can use to overcome this or is it enough with just adjusting exposure compensation on playing around with shutter speed. Thank you in advance for your answer.

Exposure is everything. If you're shooting auto, then yes exposure compernsation. If shooting manual, crank up the shutter speed, F stop or use ND filters... but be aware, ND filters makes auto focus more difficult

@@MarkusPix Yes... I shoot in manual & I'll rotate between auto & single focus from time to time...

Hi Markus, in one video you said you clean your lenses with a two wipe cleaning set. One wet towel and a dry one in 1 set. And you could buy them in sets of 10. What was the recommended product you use for that? And thank you so much for all the knowledge yoou share 😊

A problem with step-up rings is they push the filter further from the lens. I saw somewhere that the further the filter is from the lens the more IQ is degraded. Is that true?

The polarizing feels like a 90's/00's look in film. Very cool
