maybe another reson for using spoon and fork is that filipinos are good with knives and the Spanish banned us from using blades. that's why our traditional men's clothes is the barong tagalog, a see through fabric so the filipinos cannot conceal blades/weapons
Wishing Philippines change their name to Maharlika to get rid of colonial mentality once and for all. They are no longer Spanish King Philip’s subject … they are sovereign Maharlika
This is actually a fact. It's because Spain prohibited countries like Philippines during their occupation to have knives to prevent them from using it as a weapon.
You got it! 😊 a spoon is quite useful for scooping rice, soup, sauce, etc.and you can cut the meat or veggie with the blunt side of the spoon, no need for a knife!
about that magic traffic superpower.... if you don't show the hand, you can develop invisibility, AND the ability to fly, all at the same time! (well, once, anyway...when they hit you)
Eating with a spoon and fork... it's actually our shovel and pitchfork! Lotsa food volume per spoonful vs the chopstick or just the knife and fork. :-)
In the PH. The people want the Bday celebrant to be grateful that he/she survives his/her existence for another year. The celebrant says, "Why not, it's gratifying for me, and say to the Divine Providence thank you. I'm going to celebrate and it's on me.😂🤣
Yes if it's raining we're not going out . Get wet from the rain makes as sick .like get cold + coughing and fever or flue . But if we get caught by rain we should get shower in the rain and then wash it's from deep well . If there is rain and thunders with lightning all the mirror inside the house need to be cover
No, it's not that Filipinos believe that rain has some acids. Filipinos don't like to be out when starting to rain especially when rain comes in the midst of a hot day because the hot roads that are poured with rain spreads more pungent smell that could cause any person to fell sick with fever especially to small children. That's why we have to cover our noses and mouths when rain comes on a hot day. Just like when we are out on a very hot day directly hit by the sunlight and then we go into an airconditioned room, we could get sick.
We are the people that our parents taught us how to behave even before we start school and not being rude towards other people. We were not taught how to be assertive, our parents are strict and they inculcate in our mind how to be respectful. At school we have GOOD MANNERS AND RIGHT CONDUCT, which is part of the curriculum. See our weirdness! IT'S MORE FUN IN THE PHILIPPINES
The first one is totally true about if it's your bday, you're the one paying, bowing head when passing people that having conversation is showing respect, I mean I do that still here in U.S and about the rain he said, it's totally true as well. Filipino parents will always say they will get you a flu, fever although it's also normal that lots of kids like to shower in the rain at same time.
Raising hands when crossing the road is a thing in Japan too. They teach it in grade school as well and it's actually a pretty smart and simple solution. Pasalubong is generally an Asian thing like how it's called "omiyage" in Japan, just like how "baon" is for countries with rice as their primary cereal. Both things are common in Korea, Japan, China, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, etc.
About the rain. It's true that when you get wet from the rain, the mother will say you will get sick. But in reality, the reason was my mother does not want to wash our wet clothes. We don't have washing machine.. My mother wash our clothes by hands..
The rain part, i guess applicable sya sa city kasi the rain itself is not harmful pero yung other pollutant pag umulan na pwede mong malanghap o ma ingest during rain and pag nasaktuhan kapang kulang sa tulog, puyat and pagod pag ikaw naulanan sureball cold is after you or flu pero sa province people loves getting outside pag umuulan esp. The kids (wag lang may kidlat) hahaha pero overall correct hahahaha
One of the reasons why some of the Filipinos says you'll get sick when you go outside when it's raining is basically because you'll be exposed on a cold environment (you're wet so it's colder especialy with the wind brought by the rain), also puddles and mini floods is common in the Philippines if theres a strong rain or typhoon, heck sometimes a bit of rain can make some areas to flood and flood may bring dirty water from the sewer and or trash from the streets. This also used as an excuse for parents to keep their children indoors to keep them safe and clean (not everyone in the PH do this tho).
What are parents actually told us when we were young is that don't get wet with the rain because you might be sick which is most of the time true especially when you have no intention to bath with the falling rain. They also advised us that when you get wet with rain you must have a proper bath to avoid fever.
Here in Australia, you don’t even know your neighbours even how many years you’re living in a particular neighbourhood 🙃and this is where I missed being in Philippines because everyone knows each other or even noticed every person in the neighbourhood and help each other or even say hi or kumusta like are you ok 🥰Especially on Christmas time and New Year its more fun in Philippines to celebrate .🥰
About the rain. For me it's true, because I get sick even if it's just a little rain. It's actually due to the fact that it's hot in here and all of a sudden it will rain.
Driving in the Philippines is that car always get priority. If a person raises his/her hand, it means that he/she is about to cross and saying to please forget that priority for now and let me pass first. The driver for his part would oblige almost always. 😊
Theres a lot of people anywhere thats the reason, not sure if they will cross or not, thats why you have to inform drivers that you have to cross because not all want to cross they just walk beside the road or almost in the middle.
I kinda disagree with the rain thing. Actually Filipinos love the ràin , and as children (well even as adults) we love to bathe in the rain! Even if it's flooding, you would see lots of kids, and even adults playing outside in the flood. So like I said, I kinda disagree with the Filipinos being afraid of the rain.
Wahahaha so this is the fact for the rain, cause many of us feel lazy when it rains, thats why we said we will gonna sick if we come to work when it rains comes haha we choose to take a cup of coffee and enjoy the rain or we sleep, cause we love the sound of rain while sleeping and turning on the electric fan into number 3 even if it is already called hahaha sorry guys need to tell this
I think the rain is about the uneven change in temperature that your body undergoes when you get rained on. Your body becomes suseptible to viruses and bacteria because the immune system is too busy keeping track of your temperature. That's why people here say it's better to be drenched in sudden hard falling rain or to take a shower after getting a bit rained on.
Using spoon & fork is a less messier way of eating meals. You can always ask for a knife at the counter. When it comes to rain, some people can easily catch colds & flu after being exposed to it, though some people are built or raised differently like me, I even enjoy taking a bath & play under the rain for hours & it's just the same as normal for me. Here in the Philippines calling out that you can't come for work due to rain coz he/she will get sick is like half true & half an excuse because when it rains most of the time it also floods the streets & you can't go anywhere. More power to your channel Nelly! ❤
The rain thing-y is when you get wet a little bit, you may catch colds specially for kids. However, if you get soaked with rain you should be good. It’s just like taking a shower. To circumvent the little rain, drink water asap like when you get inside your house. I still do these things even now living abroad. Try it :)
we filipinos bow when the people who are talking are adults, it shows respect for their conversation, and when someone goes beyond saying excuse me or bowing for them, it is rude to them
Nahh rain in the PH is intense. Even with an umbrella, you'll get wet and then there's AC in the office. I usually get cold/sick when that happens LOL. Regarding the spoon, usually, we have soup or sauce for ulam. We also make sure that the meat is tender enough so we wont struggle using the spoon.
Yes we get sick when it's raining you know why cause Philippines is a tropical county our body are use in hot temperature mostly so getting wet and cold at the same time exposed in a long period of time we usually get sick like suddenly changing temperature from hot to cold aren't suit's well to our body it make our immune vulnerable that we can get easily catch cold. It's not about the rain but being wet and exposed in a cold weather for such a period of time makes us got sick cause like I said PH is a tropical country it's very hot in our places specially during day time even it's only 8am the sun can burn our skin with direct sunlight for just couple of minutes.
Shocking also in the west, they hop in the cab with smelly bum. They don't wash their bums, no water inside the toilet. I had this passenger, gorgeous lady from the airport, very nice to talk with but smelly bum. They don't understand that not washing bum is a bad habit.
In the old days, visitors or those invited to a birthday celebration should carry gifts. So it's not just a one way spending. Nowadays, people don't bring gifts anymore. 😊
well, when it rains here in the philippines, there is traffic and you will fell uncomfortable going out. specially if flood will arise due to the rain.
I just watch a couple of recent videos you made I really notice this time you have a glowing smile good for you Nelly. Thumbs up. Yep you guys are right about that magic five...talk to the hands l😂😂
Using Spoon and Fork is quite common in the Philippines. Me either I preferred using it but personally I don't recommend using knife for eating specially when children will supposed to use it because it's very dangerous. Maybe they will use it in any negative means like stabbing.

A little context with rice. Do note that we love rice, but not just because it's culture, but also because our dishes pair well with rice. Most of the food is oily, too spicy, too salty, so the rice really helps balance out the flavor, that's why while it's common for other races like India or Japan to salt their rice or add pepper on it, we don't because the dish served beside it is already salty or spicy. This is also why we often use the spoon and fork to shovel rice and the dish/meat into the spoon all at once. But, it's not like we are adverse to making the rice better, that's why we have fried rice. The most common is garlic fried rice, but basically fried rice can also be made with any leftovers we have in the fridge, which is why the adobo rice was born

Nelly in the PH, we seldom use utensils. We used our bare to eat foods, it's called kamayan. And also use for eating the thing habhab, find meaning of the word and you'll not use utensils for everything.😂🤣✌️
Reason for not going out if it rains especially if its not so urgent is the traffic and sometimes the flooding of the road and not because of getting sick
We became lazy when it's raining. Because In our culture, rainy days is family bonding time.❤watchin together on tv, karaoke, playing cards and other things... it is like we will miss something if we go out.😂
The main reasons Filipinos don't need a table knife, because Filipino foods specially the pork or chicken are very tender, pork and spoon are enough utensil on the table.
"Bowing" is actually not the original literal Action to tell people that you wanted to pass (specially passing in the middle of 2 people) as i can remember, we used to put our hand in front of us (like showing a direction) and we would say "makikiraan nga po"/can i pass/may i pass... if you dont want to say the phrase "makikiraan nga po", just showing the gestures "putting your hand in front of you like showing a direction" already speaks that you wanted to pass....
On the use of the knife instead of fork: It goes back to how it was during the colonial period. The use of fork is associated with the lifestyle of the elite, and Filipinos and Indios were not really privileged to use more sophisticated tools for cooking and dining during those periods. Most Filipinos in the current time just do not know that the use of fork is part of high-level lifestyle for the elites during the distant past. Modern day Filipinos tend to see the use of fork as a sign of elitism.. the same concept when they are overwhelmed and intimated by fluent English speaker when they say 'nosebleed'. The use of fork and knife is viewed by the common people in the Philippines as too elite or too 'sosyal' as what they say. I am a Filipino-American and while I grew up in an ordinary middle class household in the Philippines, I have always been using spoon, fork and knife whenever I need to, even as a child. So, there are Filipinos in fact in the Philippines who use fork and knife. Filipinos not using knife for dining is NOT WEIRD. It is part of the more predominant aspect of culture. There is NOTHING WEIRD about culture. It is part of the identify of a group of people. So, to you expats, do not call it weird. The same as there are many aspects of western culture that are new to Filipinos living abroad, but those Filipinos do not call them weird. They learn it as something new that they try to learn to be culturally well informed people appreciative of cultural differences.
Pinoys and rain... we have a concept called "Lamig" (cold/coldness). Rain facilitates "coldness" entering the body. Lamig accumulates in the body and screws with your health. Old folks who practice "hilot" (broadly, "massage," but it's more than that) will tell you that your fever (post-exposure to rain) and the your muscle pain (post-exposure to air-conditioned office spaces) are caused by the lamig that has bunched up in your body. Hilot and rest away from cold water or air allow you to shed lamig.
Because we plant rice its fresh and easy to eat with any dish, unlike bread need to bake and lot to do!if we really live like island and mt.we better just eat with our bare hands just to finished things faster not too much maners!😅
maybe another reson for using spoon and fork is that filipinos are good with knives and the Spanish banned us from using blades. that's why our traditional men's clothes is the barong tagalog, a see through fabric so the filipinos cannot conceal blades/weapons
