    Even in season 3 Ursa told Sabine that she has no claim to the Darksaber because it has to be won in combat, so The Mandalorian series didn’t change the rules. I feel like the Mandalorians in this episode all collectively agreed to make an exception to the rule (including Ursa) this one time, but Bo-Katan knows her people would never accept her claiming the saber illegitimately a second time after already losing it once, so she wants to do it the “correct” way in The Mandalorian.

    • @MeyaRoseGirl
      @MeyaRoseGirl 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Agreed. To be honest, I think that Bo-Katan was NEVER destined to rule Mandalore, considering she has lost it so many times (1. She lost it to her sister before The Phantom Menace. 2. She lost it to Maul during The Clone Wars when he defeated Pre Viszla. 3. She lost it to the Empire before Rebels. 4. She lost it to the Empire AGAIN before The Mandalorian.)

      I also think it's important that Bo-Katan accepts the Darksaber in the presence of all the other clans, so that the transfer is 'ratified' through consensus; it's not as simple as an individual choice to accept it without a combat challenge.

    Especially because Bo-Katan declined the Darksaber from Sabine in the first part of the episode, and also comments on Sabine's important leadership qualities, it seems like the Darksaber tradition is still pretty consistent. It's not until the full truth of Sabine's violation of the Mandalorian ways and her attempts to atone for it are fully explored that the weight of Sabine _needing_ to pass it on to someone worthy is more clear. Even then, that only happens after all the clans showing their full support of the exchange that Bo-Katan actually takes up the blade.
    On top of that, Sabine recovered it from Maul, but not in a direct test of combat, so there is additional context to how that might cause division. The way Bo-Katan phrases it in *_The Mandalorian_* is that she has to win the Darksaber back because of how she received it here, _AND_ how it's implied that she is the one who lost it directly to Moff Gideon.
    Not only that, here she's receiving it from Sabine who can't rule with her stigma of the weapon she's built, so it's got enough justification to be passed along with the other clans' approval - but to be hers again it _NEEDS_ to be recovered from the person who took it in combat. And then there's the matter of who wins it in combat…
    Din Djarin is loyal to "The Way" of old Mandalore to an extremely zealous fault, given his history of coming out of the legacy of Death Watch. On top of that, he doesn't even remotely carry that same stigma that Sabine did, and is almost the complete opposite in terms of how deeply he holds those traditions sacred, and the others rally behind him. As a Mandalorian, Bo-Katan would almost certainly never have the clans' approval over Din from a symbolic standpoint, but _especially_ not after he defeated the very same enemy who took the Darksaber from her.
    As soon as the legacy of rule through combat tied to the Darksaber was reestablished here, with the former ruler Maul's fate tied to Obi-Wan - it doesn't have any extenuating circumstances to allow it to be inherited through abdication - likely following a parallel to what was initially established after it was recovered from the Jedi Temple back at the start of its ruling legacy.

      She literally duels Saxon for it though and earns it, it's literally what wins Clan Wren over properly. But yeah, the stigma of the weapon she created and the reality of her clan working for the empire (and probably her age too) would most likely mean very few people would actually follow her.
      Of course, Death Watch has it's own stigma because of its history as a Mandalorian supremacist faction and later terrorist organization, so you know, neither Din or Bo-Katan would have the upper hand due to that. Din has less official history though, and Bo-Katan has technically lead Mandalore to major losses twice now (post-TCW & "the purge") so I doubt she'd be very popular even if Din's a zealot nobody with death watch connections.

    • @PierceArner
      @PierceArner 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@hawkins347 That's also what works in his favor. He comes from an extremely purist background so the ties to Mandalorian tradition in his entire upbringing are extremely rigid but also in alignment with what any other Mandalorian would want regardless of how extreme or relaxed their background is to those traditions. Then, as a person he is maintaining the spirit of the Mandalorian Way when it comes to acting honorably, and he is growing to understands when the dogma like wearing a helmet can be excused and when it should be maintained. That's precisely the qualities that you'd look for in a leader because he has the ability to influence the extremists and make them less radical, while restoring the legacy that the others are looking for that's been absent since Mandalore fell.

    22:30 As Moff Gideon said, it’s not the weapon, it’s the story.
    Pre Vizla: descendant of the first and only Mandalorian Jedi, fighting to “restore his heritage,” died honoring “the strongest shall rule”
    Maul: warrior who appealed to the blood lust within the Death Watch Mandalorians, was respected until he revealed himself as a coward acting in his own self interest. Darksaber is lost until it is discovered by-
    Sabine Wren: artist and weapons expert, probably the first Mandalorian since Tarre Vizla to actually be taught by a Jedi how to wield it, was willing to fight and die to end the empire and restore her home world. But she is young so she passed it to-
    Bo-Katan: sister to the late duchess, right hand of Pre Vizla, fought for Mandalore’s freedom from Maul and from the Empire. She encapsulates Mandalore’s difficult past yet hopeful future. That is until it (and the darksaber) is taken away by-
    Mott Gideon: we don’t know how he got it but it was in circumstances that Bo-Katan survived. I feel like him winning it in one on one combat is unlikely. He then makes the mistake of kidnapping a Mandalorian foundling, leading him losing the saber to-
    Din Djarin: who is so Mandalorian he is mostly known as THE Mandalorian. A foundling who took in another foundling, Din has always been devoted to the way of the Mandalore. He keeps his word, brings in his bounties, and follows a strict moral code. He is probably the only person who could get the die hard warriors and the pacifists to come together (he’s already shown negotiation skills in his time with the sand people and the settlers of tatooine). Din Djarin is the Way.

    One thing to consider with beskar effectiveness is it's [light] reflectivity. Remember in ANH when a blaster shot bounces around a trash compactor? Maybe part of the reason why Din's armor is so good is that it's very reflective.
    Still, I think purity is the main reason why some beskar is better than others.

      Based on who Sabine loses later in the show, I think the writers didn’t want to give Sabine two major losses in one season. Plus a big part of her arc is getting her family back together after it was torn apart. I think having Sabine’s weapon kill 20 members of her own clan is still effective to establish the threat of the Duchess

    • @EwanGregorMc
      @EwanGregorMc 3 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      @@josephwantock1993 I think the problem is not that they didn't die, it's that the show clearly wanted us to think they died. I agree that the writers may not have wanted Sabine to suffer from two losses in one season but, in this case, they shouldn't have so clearly implied that they died at all. If they had thought that Sabine's weapon killing 20 members of her clan was effective enough to evoke feelings of loss then they could have put focus on that but, apparently, they didn't which is what was criticized here. Of course, that does not completely undermine the effectiveness of the weapon itself.

    I believe that not all the mandalorian armor are full 100% beskar, but the majority are some sort of alloy between beskar (x%) and other metal alloy (y%) like durasteel. In fact we know that Din's Armor is full beskar and it is very rare. This is the perfect explanation to fix the discrepancy between TCW/Rebels and The Mandalorian. I hope we will see the battle that start here in Rebels and end with the Great Purge in some flashbacks during the next Mando season.

    In my opinion there's a few ways to reconcile the different ways Beskar has been shown to work in the various series. There's likely a "pure" Beskar and a composite Beskar. On top of that, I like to think there's probably some sort of "integrity" stat to the armor like in some rpgs.
    Din Djarin's armor was very recently forged out of pure Beskar, so his is at 100%. Meanwhile characters with generations old armor might be lower on the integrity scale. That could help explain his scene on the Gozanti tanking all of the blaster hits ahead of Bo Katan's group. The rest of them were like "we can't take this many!" but he was all "Leeeroy Jenkins!".
    We still have instances like Sabine getting a blaster redirected into her helmet by Vader, or many cases of Mandalorians in CW & Rebels going down from blaster fire, and of course Boba's armor deflecting shots too, so it's not a perfect explanation. Guess we just have to wait on some more clarity as the lore moves forward.

      I dont think we even need to speculate, the only time they mention the word beskar in this show is when they mention "beskar alloy" so Sabine's weapon is effective against armours that contain beskar, which tells us not all mandalorian armour is pure beskar. Some mandalorian armour *is* pure beskar or an alloy with higher %, this isnt speculation either as they go out of their way in Mando season 2 to mention explicitly that the spear is pure beskar and can therefore block a lightsaber. If there's a concept of pure beskar which *can* block a lightsaber, then this is hard confirmation that there are beskar alloys which cannot.
      Help me out here, why do fans like Blind Wave (who know a lot more than me) always debate stuff like this when the shows have spelled it out for us already? Nobody heard the word alloy? They forgot characters making a distinction about "pure beskar" in Mando?

    • @cd5sircoupe
      @cd5sircoupe 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MikeHesk742 I 100% agree with this take on the subject. It's essentially what I was proposing in not so many words. Though I wasn't speculating on how the Duchess affects Beskar in particular, just on how it's been shown to behave slightly differently in Clone Wars/Rebels/Mando and trying to reconcile certain characters having more "plot armor" than others. Perhaps I should have used the word alloy instead of composite, but in my mind they're interchangeable.
      Edit: Oh yeah, in Blind Wave's case at least, Eric seems to be the only one that has deep knowledge on certain things, based on the limited number of reaction series' that I watch. That could be different for the other guys on other shows that I don't watch reactions to. Even still, like on The Witcher reactions Rick has a superficial knowledge of the lore. People need to be more aware of how they really emphasise "pure beskar" on rare occasions, but just "beskar alloy" usually. Like when din holds the beskar spear, and asks "beskar?" the magistrate responds "pure beskar". It's an important difference. Hence also why it's such a big deal in the first season when he upgrades his armour.
    Beskar is just too rare and expensive to make everyone's armour out of it purely, and it puts a target on your back if you do.

    I think there is something awful that happened to Bo between rebels and mando that we are not told yet, and will be told next season of mando, like the clans all betrayed or left Bo eventually because she did not win it, and that’s why she needs to win it now. We know to unite the extremist mandos that raised Din (not sure spelling) she would need to follow the old customs for this at least. They could probably look past the helmet thing if she at least wins the saber. That’s my thinking at least.

    Ever since the release of The Mandalorian, I feel that the last scene of this episode didn't age well considering that at some point Bo lost the Darksaber to Moff Gideon before Din Djarin manages to claim it after beating Gideon in the Season 2 finale of The Mandalorian.
    Going to be interesting how Season 3 will play since I find Bo-Katan to be an extremely questionable character.

    • @SwaggerLikeUz
      @SwaggerLikeUz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bo Katan at this juncture isn't good or bad. She is what Din needs to become independent Thus She left Death Watch aka Din's cult to form Her own Clan (The Nite Owls).

    I guess the Mandalorian are sort of like samurai in that they didn't like the fancy new weaponry like gatling guns and all because they were about tradition and the way of the sword.

    • @vetarlittorf1807
      @vetarlittorf1807 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. It's actually the opposite. They're more like Spartans and Celts. The only things that are sacred to Mandalorians are their families and their armors. When it comes to weapons, they use what's most effective.

    in the Mandalorian it is said the armor does degrade ....And it does need to be re-forged. I forget exactly which episode .. Maul says "I claim this sword, and my rightful place as leader of Death watch " As we know you don't have to be a ruler and have the dark saber to rule the people .. And I'm sure Gideon didn't win it in combat there's no way he beat Bo Katan in a fight.. My guess is she was taken into custody and he took the saber from her... But either way I like Eric's explanation.... we'll have to wait and see what happens But I give the guys makingthe Mandalorian TV show credit for bringing it up right at the end of the season lmao for everybody to talk about

    • @ivanvee7800
      @ivanvee7800 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bo was pretty much elected as leader in this episode then she lost dark Saber so now mandalorian don't see her as a good leader, if she actually won the dark Saber she would look like a good leader, but now the dark Saber is din djarin

    • @SpaghootiSnek
      @SpaghootiSnek 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Because she is not supposed to just take it, that's against their traditions and they did it anyway, to fellow Mandalorians it can make her appear weak. The clans there supported it, but that doesn't mean all Mandalorians will and there won't be detractors. Then she lost it, her people, and Mandalore. Taking it back in combat, as is tradition, is a symbolic victory as much as it is a physical victory. Now that Din has it, if he just gives it to her, it puts her rule in question again and makes her look like she was too weak to retrieve it herself.
