@@RainyRunningRiver when I was young, my favorite character was Pocahontas, and I just loved her gorgeous hair and connection to the natural world. If I were a child now instead of my blonde, green eyed self in the 1990s, I'd be told that I'm not allowed to like a native American figure, nor to be interested in appreciating the culture. As I got older, I researched what the real history of natives in the U.S. was like. If i had been treated back then as children are now, I wouldn't know how tragic it truly was. And my sympathy wouldn't be there.
@@heiroot Tragic, nah. It's a part of how the world was shaped. I never, ever hear any sympathy for any other civilization that had been conquered, taken over and basically wiped out outside of those who were able to integrate into either slavery or society.
The only sentiment I enjoyed was the fact as a white woman you could relate and enjoy to the Disney story of Pocahontas. Meaning it was not a color/race/culture thing. as a lifelong tomboy, this is just the sort of toy i would have loved to have as a kid.
Remember. Every time a kid sees themself represented, it makes their world a little brighter. They can look at that representation and think "Hey! That person looks just like me!"
Same. As a rough-and-tumble little tomboy, it wasn’t that I hated dolls. I just hated the dolls they made for kids at the time. Most of those were your typical Barbie - adult woman with long blond hair and lots of pink and glitter and dresses.
First off, I had no interest in adult dolls beyond them being background characters. I wanted a doll that was a kid, like me!
But beyond that, they didn’t have kid dolls that looked like me. Even the Tommy/Kelly dolls did not suffice, with the two most common being a blond bowl-cut boy or a girl with long blond hair. None of them looked like my friends, who were mostly boys of a variety of hair colors, hair types and skin colors.
I wanted girl dolls that could wear jeans and tee-shirts like I did. I wanted girl dolls that had medium or short hair like me and other girls did. I wanted BOYS for my girl doll to play with, just like I did.
I’d have begged my parents for every one of these as a kid.

They’re dolls, they look cool. I think I would have loved to have these as a kid. I don’t think most kids are going to have big thoughts about gender while playing with them, but it’s a cool concept to have so many different options for one doll. Even with the super gendered dolls I had as a kid, I still played around with doing stuff like this. I think these dolls just make it easier for kids to play how they want with less limitations.

I know people hate the phrase "toxic masculinity" but I think toys represent a good example of what that concept entails. We typically give little girls baby dolls to pretend that they are moms, while little boys are given toy soldiers so they can pretend they are at war. Boys will be made fun of relentlessly if they play with dolls or baby dolls. I am not a psychologist, so I can't say that I know for sure how deeply that impacts our view of men not being able to raise children or be nurturers, but that is something that still persists. In a divorce, mothers are far more likely to get full custody of the children, regardless of who would be the better parent. We are programmed to think the mother will be the better caregiver because men are all about conflict and violence, and that is what the concept of toxic masculinity represents. So I am curious to see if those attitudes will change in the future if we diversify the kinds of toys we allow our children to play with.

@@OpiumBride I think "trans kids" shouldn't be a thing. There are alot of cases where people think they're trans, but have a disorder. I have a friend who that was the case and thankfully he didn't go thru the surgery. Even the hormone therapy is risky for kids and they don't need to rush anything in figuring out who they are. There are cases of people have gender reassignment and regretting it years later.
Look you might not like other opinions, but I know what I see in my own line of work and these toys beyond the customization feature won't last. Show a girl a regular Barbie and one of these dolls (dolls only) they'll go for the regular Barbie and most boys still won't play with either.

Wow. This comment section is so disappointing. I really thought we were becoming a more progressive and accepting society. I know I am going to be faced with a lot of hate, but let me just share what I have learned about this topic as a student completing her psychology degree where we are REQUIRED to learn about this:
1) parents DO NOT force this on their child! There are several documentaries, I'd recommend looking this up, where the child knows their gender identity by age 3. In fact, studies show that majority of people who are transgender already are aware by 3.
2) The parents dont "push it on them" or "brain wash them", they just want to make their child happy. Actually, studies show it is SOCIETY that brainwashes children to think that "girls need to play with barbies and wear pink" while "boys need to play with monster trucks and wear blue".
3) Nobody is forcing a boy to play with barbies or a girl to play with monster trucks, forcing children to be trans. If the child likes barbie dolls or monster trucks, it's their decision. Parents simply want their child to be happy.
4) There seems to be confusion on the difference between sex and gender. Sex is binary. Yes, you can only be born as a male with a penis and a female with a vagina. But gender is non binary, your personality and interests define your gender.
I know people are going to come at me but I know the facts as I am seeking a degree in a subject which discusses the subject matter. Have a nice day!
Think about this way, every generation there's a group of people fighting for rights and social acceptance. 100 years ago it was people of color and women, and then 50 years ago people of color started getting a bit more rights...so then gay people started asking for rights, today it's trans rights. Today most people are ok with gay people, but most people aren't as accepting about trans people. Give it another 30 years of fighting and we'll be there.

These dolls are wonderful. When I was a kid I would've loved these, and so would've literally all of my friends. These aren't dolls to confuse kids, they're meant for kids to be able to express and relate. To let kids know "hey, you're not alone, and don't change yourself because other people want to, be yourself and have fun".
And if you think "oh these are gonna make kids gender confused or sexually confused" when you were a straight little boy and saw a little girl wearing a dress and think you should to just because she was? No. You didn't. You knew who you were. When you were a straight little girl did you see other little girls and want to kiss them because boys kiss them? No, you didn't.
Children are smart. As much as adults say "kids are dumb", they're not. They are smart and much more creative and open minded than people want to admit. They won't change themselves because of a toy, they'll try and change themselves if people make them feel bad for being who they are. As they grow older and people still beat them down they will grow more confused and broken, until they see nothing left to live for and that's the harsh reality.
So instead of harming a child's well being because you don't like their toy, why don't you just let them be themselves? Let kids play, let kids learn and love themselves. Stop teaching kids to hate themselves, let them be able to enjoy the limited amount of childhood they have.
If you are a child reading this, and you're feeling down by the comments, don't be. People can be mean, and they're afraid of letting kids be kids. If you can get these dolls, even if you're a boy or a girl, or neither, go ahead and have fun. Create memories and know you're special because you are :) Don't let people hurt you.

And as long as parents are healthy and supportive, I don’t see the issue with parents communicating to their children about these toys.
And even with that aside, why are the other comments speaking on behalf of the children, rather than letting the children think for themselves and develop their own opinions on these dolls? If I was a kid and discovered the gender-neutral dolls, I would’ve been ecstatic that there were toys that both boys and girls could play with.

So yeah, they can have a boy doll with long hair, a girl doll with short hair, or whatever they want. The doll is like giving kids a blank canvas
But that's the whole point of this doll - why is it that a boy can't have long hair or like the colour pink? Why is it that girls must like things like makeup? The point of this doll is to embrace and accept how a child wishes to express their own gender. If you're a girl who is sporty and likes to have short hair, you can make your doll up that way. If you're a girl who likes dresses and long hair, you can do that as well.
Strict ideas of "this gender can and cannot do that" are built on carried-down ideas from people; they're not built on something concrete. Don't believe me? Definitions of being a man or woman can even different per society, and change over time. For example, one would say that "only girls should wear dresses and men should not", yet, in Scotland, men wear kilts (basically, skirts) and appropriate this as part of being a man in Scottish society. In the 18th century, it was considered manly to wear heels, makeup, wigs and stockings.
Overall, gender should mean what it means to you. If your version of being a boy is playing sport, cool. If it's dancing in ballet, also cool.

Protecting kids is the priority, adults can behave the way they want, they still have to face the consequences of their choices and deal with people judging them for it, it's only fair. Blaming society & brainwashing kids about their differences won't make people accept these so called differences, but will lead to more and more rejection. What they're talking about here is gender neutrality, meaning that what it means to be a man or a woman is not as defined or restricted. If the child identifies as a girl and to them, being a girl means having short hair and wearing jeans, this doll caters towards that. This is opposed to another doll that may be excessively pink, sport makeup and come with hairstyling accessories - a doll like this would encourage stereotypical ideas of femininity, such as that girls must like "girly" things, which can be alienating to a child that does not feel like they relate to those things in accordance to their gender.

As a kid I would’ve given ANYTHING to have one of these. They’re just super interesting and I think the idea is that they can play with whatever gender they feel like that day, which is pretty much what happens in real life.
