00:00 Ralph Lauren Polo Shirts Introduction
The Ralph Lauren Polo shirt is a staple of prep style and has become near ubiquitous as a piece in many of our closets. The iconic pony logo is recognized across the globe as a symbol of luxury and it’s usually the first thing many people think of when they imagine a polo shirt.
00:45 The History of Ralph Lauren
Ralph Lauren was founded by Ralph Lifshitz in 1967. He named the company “Ralph Lauren” because he thought it’d be more marketable than with his true last name.
The Polo brand only grew in prestige after being featured prominently in 1974’s The Great Gatsby and later Annie Hall. The brand then gained global recognition as they expanded outside of the US starting in the 80s. The added global attention brought them in direct competition with LaCoste, who was the one who arguably first invented the original shirt style and Sunspel, who helped to popularize the pique cotton that polo shirts were made of.
03:25 Ralph Lauren Polos in Contemporary Menswear
The popularity of Ralph Lauren Polos has remained a consistent mainstay in mainstream fashion, though they have ebbed and flowed throughout pop culture. The “pony” so prominently featured in Polo’s clothing got its initial appeal as a status symbol and remains a cornerstone of the brand to this day.
04:53 Ralph Lauren Polo Product Range
One of Ralph Lauren’s most defining decisions was to break the brand down into several different lines. The actual Polo line has a large variety of offerings outside of their classic short sleeve mesh polo at $110 retail. This includes long-sleeved polos, polos with pockets and some interesting fabrics like Terry Cloth.
    08:30 Ralph Lauren Polo Construction
On the Ralph Lauren site, the iconic mesh shirt is simply listed as being made of “cotton”. Sure, there’s cotton in there, but without a listed amount it’s impossible to be certain it’s 100% cotton. It also has a ribbed collar, two-button placket, and ribbed armbands which are classic design features. We also don’t get any information on if the buttons are plastic, shell, or MOP. When you look at the stitching around the buttonholes, you can see that they’re stitched and then cut.
With all of these construction methods in mind, it looks like the classic polo shirt is definitely a mass-manufactured item.
09:47 Assessing Ralph Lauren Polo Shirts
    13:09 Is It Worth It?
If you’re a fan of the Ralph Lauren brand, and like the history and prestige behind it, the Polo line Polo shirts are perhaps one of the most iconic garments they make. The Polo Line shirt certainly can be a dependable, good-looking product that is a perfectly valid option as an addition to your wardrobe. Ultimately making the Ralph Lauren Polo line Polo shirts worth it, on average.

I have about dozen that are 25-30 years old. No buttons have fallen off, no stitching has unraveled, some fading in the darker colors, as is to be expected. They are undoubtedly the highest quality clothing purchase I've ever made. The majority of them were Polo Outlet Store purchases, too.

yup, same. Maybe not 30 y.o. but right up there. Nearly fell over a few of weeks ago, picked a couple up at a charity shop. 1. was £4.50 the other £5.00!

@@rgnotdeadYes! I have spent years thrifting 95% of my Polo shirts and clothing. I will say that if I can buy a second hand Polo Ralph Lauren shirt from a thrift store (in very good condition), then the quality must be exceptional! I usually never pay full price, even if I buy online from Polo or from their factory outlet stores. Sales only!
I usually spend less than $10 on my Polo Ralph Lauren shirts from the thrift store.
My only gripe is that I wish the side vents were reinforced better.

I'm regularly impressed by the construction, quality, and longevity of my long-sleeve Polo rugby shirts. I've had at least four that I purchased secondhand for next to nothing and they are as nice as the day I bought them. Price-per-wear must be in the nickels by now. I've added a couple from the Polo store when they go on sale and for the price there are no equals.

I never rocked Polo in highschool, and I regret it, but once I hit my late teens/early 20s, I never looked back once I put that shirt on. I hit them up every holiday I can get, and I'm sooooo addicted to the colors, and artwork of the bears. I can't go a year without hitting the Polo store up!!

Tbf, I don’t really recommend kids get luxury clothes as they’ll usually outgrow them in a couple months. Granted everyone has a different budget but if it was my kids, I wouldn’t have bothered getting clothes they’ll throw in a bag for Goodwill in a couple months. Not saying kids shouldn’t have nice things, but at these prices maybe not THAT nice

I am not a fan of them for myself , but my mother’s and brother’s Ralph Lauren polos are definitely worth the price for how often they wear them and how long they’ve lasted. My mother still has polos that she wore when I was in kindergarten (I am 30 now), and the same polos my brother bought in college are the ones he now wears on casual days.

while living in an impoverished area we had a table the hallway of a building where people brought different items and clothes they would not use anymore. One day i found 3 RL polos fitting perfectly. One had a whole but i t didnt bother. I still have those 3 polo 5 years later and they feel brand new everytime i wear them. I bought some stone island and lacoste polos and the quality is no where near them RL polos. Maybe its because they are old and quality was different back then.

IMO they are worth it. I'm wearing some of them since I was in high school for over 15 years, and they still look fairly ok. White or different shades of red in slim fit are iconic.
Every year I buy one at least. Generally polos in mesh cloth are better quality than in other styles. I don't find any decay in quality over the years, but I generally buy them in RL shops on sale in Western Europe so that might be also a factor. In outlets I generally don't like how only classic fit in not so popular colors is present

I have probably between 20 and 30 Ralph Lauren Polo shirts in various cuts and colors, mixed up of the Polo and Polo Sports and Purple Label lines. The quality of the Polo shirts is consistent, and in my experience, is of a higher quality than most of its competitors. The Purple Label line polo shirts are hand made in Italy rather than machine made in China, or Bangladesh or whatever so are of course of a much higher quality but all of them across the line have magnificent versatility and can be worn with a blazer or sports jacket and a pair of pleated sartorial style pants or with chinos of jeans for a more casual look. They can also as a result go with different footwear from loafers and boat shoes to a more formal Oxford shoe depending on the pants worn. Personally I think Ralph Lauren's Polo shirts are an excellent investment in a gentleman's wardrobe.

I have about 25 RL polos. I love the colors year-round. The long sleeve polos provide a casual look in colder months. What has helped my polos last is that I only have maybe 2 or 3 mesh polos…all the others are soft Pima cotton. Secondly, I always wash cold, hang dry, then dry no heat for 5 minutes to soften and loosen stubborn wrinkles. Then with a medium iron, the Pima cottons look as good as brand new.

I wear RL Polos all the time, but hardly ever the classic mesh. My favorite is their soft cotton polo. The fabric has an inherent cool feel to it and provides you with a better drape. It also has a three-button placket, which looks slightly better IMO.

I used to buy RL Polos exclusively, they would last for years and not fade or shrink. I recently realized I’ve had to replace my favorite color every year at Christmas and the new ones barely last a year. I’ve got shirts from 2012 that still fit and look nice, and the ones recently shrink and become belly shirts after a few washes. I have a sneaking (unverified) suspicion they cut costs over the pandemic and have been getting away with it. I switched to Tyrwhit this year after a Father’s Day special, so far, things are going OK.

I gotta admit: I am quite a RL fanboy. I have 7 polos of them currently, and have had many more. Especially the lighter colors will look great despite many washes. Darker colors fade quicker, after >10 washes. Construction quality is great: I have never had problems with the stitches, button holes, buttons, etc. Only problems I've had, was with their more expensive "soft cotton" polos. They tend to shrink in size, despite cold and gentle washing. More people complain about that issue. It already happens after te first wash... and both my shirts I had were instantly ruined. They shrink almost a complete size. I would recommend to buy their mesh polos, in custom slim fit. Although, for less money, Lacoste and Brooks Brothers have been working well for me too. Lacoste is similar, but somewhat more lightweight and has a rougher texture. BB is highly similar to RL, also in terms of fit when buying one size smaller. Also BB slim in XS is around 4cm longer than my RL custom slim S. Keep that in mind 😊

I like polo shirts and own several, including an ultra soft pima cotton. They are my main go to casual shirt during warm weather months. I would not pay full retail price, but they are worth it if you can get them for less. Many of mine came from poshmark at a steep discount. They hold up better then many other polos that fade quickly. Some tend to run large but can be shrunk in the dryer. Be on the lookout for counterfeit polos, which I ran into while in Bolivia. Also there is another company, the US Polo Association, with a similar logo but they are not the same company.

I buy Ralph Lauren polos because they haven't changed the pattern since I first bought them, so they always fit perfectly. I only buy them on sale for about 80€ (normally 120€ in Germany). But to be honest, that rarely happens anymore because I have all kinds of colors and they are indestructible. My first polo from 2016 in college green still looks immaculate.

I own many different RL polos (among other brands like Lacoste) in different colors and i always enjoy wearing them. They have that 'old money/quiet luxury' vibe for summer which i love. More casual than a dress shirt but still more formal than you typical t-shirt or many other modern alternatives. I find them a very flexible piece for spring/summer wear; you can usually wear them even in the office and still make a good impression, except for the more formal dress codes(always be mindful of your office dress codes).
Being a staple in menswear makes it also a good investment despite the price being higher than average; you will wear it over the years and it will never truly be out of style or out of place.

I've owned many, many RL Polo shirts over the years and I love their icon style. I've never had an issue with fading or with the construction. Their newer offerings with the large pony logo isn't my style--I only buy the traditional classic styles. Advertising the brands you wear is a bit gauche in my opinion. But that's just me. Their dress shirts are also well constructed and hold their shape well; especially, if you dry clean and press them regularly. I own two RL suits, as well. They are ok off the rack; however, I'd recommend having them tailered slightly to make them your own. Overall, RL is absolutely worth the money in my opinion.

Polo shirts have been a staple for me very long time.. Warm weather alone, under a sweater or sweatshirt cooler. Long business trip, Blue Blazer two dress shirts, khaki trousers and jeans, plus one Polo shirt, that’s all I needed. Starts to fray around the collar move it to gym shirt duty. Wore and still wear Lacoste early, moved to Ralph Lauren as my primary Polo later. My opinion Ralph Lauren best of the type. Classic style, color options, fit and finish, and the feel of RL’s cotton. Cost per wear considering how much use they get, almost nothing.

Polo RL is the only brand of polos that wears perfect on me, it molds around my muscles and has a tight grip around my arms 💪🏽 girls go crazy, plus it’s also tall people friendly. I also like their denim jeans, cargo pants/ shorts and their chinos. All wear super great.

The RL polos have a cut that's very flattering to my physique, something that's hard to find with competitors. Saks' private label polo fits similarly and don't have the ostentation of a logo, so that's my go-to for now.

We went to the outlet store yesterday and their 100 dollar polo shirts were thin and had zero structure. They were see-through and almost slub knit. I've felt better fabric at Walmart. 😬 Was this because it was an outlet store? Are the polo shirts sold at the regular department stores generally higher quality?

I've purchased a number of Ralph Lauren polos and have decided to stop buying them. The key problems I've had is poor quality control in size and some have appeared to shrink. In terms of size, I've had some that are literally 4 or 5 inches longer than others of the same size. I've had a number that fit well at first and then get too tight - and it's not me gaining weight as I have others that are fine. I have not had the same issues with Lacoste or Brooks Brother's. It's a pity because I have not had the same issues with other Ralph Lauren products and like the look of the polos.

I have worn Ralph Lauren Polos since the late 80s. The horse has always been iconic logo and has had a particular status .As fabrics have evolved , you realize how low quality of a shirt this is. I think the term bacon collar could’ve originated with this polo. Forget attempting to put a blazer or sweater over this as the neck literally folds and disappears .Brands like State and Liberty, Twillory,or even Collars and Company are head and shoulders above for a comparable price

This week I have tried the ‘Original Fit’ one on, which was brought back I believe not so long ago. It has the classic/vintage blue-white logo and a heavy price tag (190€), so I was curious. Honestly, I have never been a big fan of RL polos (even tho my all-time fav brand is Ralph), because of the sleeves. I found those very sloppy because of not embracing the biceps at all, as it should be - like for example the Lacoste ones do. But this one, I would say the most perfect polo shirt I have ever put on. Written ‘Original Fit’ on the label is really not just a marketing trick, I think it really has all the elements like the original had when it was launched, and finally, the sleeves are as tight as it should be. The material also feels better, so as the cut/fit.
