Well said
And he is still the right person at the right time after KISS farewell!! 2024! And your point is......
@@lloydcarlinsky2836 his ability to perform disagrees. some of the live footage is hard to watch and his legacy was fading as fast as Pauls voice was post farewell tour.
@@MysticSpank WWTF do you expect hes 70 years old no different from Gene falling down all the time on stage or paul and Gene using backing tracks they're old they make mistakes jeez or is that not allowed in your generation
@@frankbrown3218 LOL, i was speaking to the "reunion tour" and to Loyd saying he was still the right person in 2024 which he was not. That was by the bands choice and Ace's choice. Having some "youth" on the stage sure did help in the later touring years. Not sure what gen you think i am but i saw them in 1979, several times in the 80s up through the 2000s and the EOTR.
Ace is one of my biggest influences on guitar because i can actually play his stuff
Underrated comment, this was his gift.
I was like 16 when Kiss was HUGE and VH1 came out. I had only been playing for 2 years and playing EVH was out of the question, next level alien invasion type impossible. However Ace and Joe Perry were doable and were attainable.
People need to stop being âcriticsâ and leave well enough alone ESPECIALLY if nobodyâs creating music thatâs better than what theyâre criticizing
People can do as they please..Mr DICKtator
I agree. Itâs art. Does it move you? Great, enjoy! If not, listen to what does move you.
That is no virtuous endeavor in this case bro. I can fart more musically than what I just heard...
Ace sounds like Ace.
Yup, and he's actually pretty good at explaining his "technique" in his own unique way!
Exactly !
Ace falls into the Johnny Thunders group of guitarists. May not be the most technically gifted, however, you KNOW exactly who it is within a few notes.
People miss that KISS came from the same scene as the New York Dolls, the Ramones, and a bunch of other punk/new wave icons. Peter Criss even auditioned for the Dolls. KISS became slick and corporate but Aceâs raw, scrappy style is quintessential 70s NYC rock.
Compared to most studio musicians and successful Rock bands, the members of Kiss are mediocre musicians. There are a novelty band with a great gimmick to market themselves.

Jimmy Page is worse. There are plenty of 70s Live Kiss videos unedited on YT
Yeah so was Mick Mars of Motley Crue sloppy at times but nobody played quite like he did.

IDGAF I love it when Ace is rocking!!!! My first guitar hero.
Personally I think Ace does great for someone who never had any training) teaching, and what he's accomplished all his years... He deserves a lot of respect.
I have to disagree. There are two potential reasons why Ace never progressed as a player. 1. He was so void of natural talent that it didn't matter how much he practiced he just didn't get it. Or #2 which is more likely he was lazy and partied too much to care about his chops.
@@DMDvideo10 he's just a plain, simple, basic
rocker.. he never had ambition to be more than that.. and he has never claimed he is anything more or less.
He loves it, he loves the fans and he has fun.
Nothing wrong with it.. ðĪ·
And he's made pretty good go of it, and he does other stuff too, some music related, some not.
@@warthogA10 That's a lazy statement. Ace took shots at Paul for using backing vocal tracks. I saw Ace last year. It was embarrassing. He should be allowed near a stage or guitar. And I was a huge fan of his growing up. I started playing because of him and Paul.
Ace has always been a sloppy guitar player, that's what made him so good in KISS. ACE will always be one of my favorite GUITAR players.
Exactly. That's why I thought the clip of him playing was cool. He's just Ace. But the *only* Ace.
Heâs not sloppy on 100,000 years, Love Gun, Shock Me or Black DiamondâĶ.
@@stephenallsman8913 ACE does some of his best guitar work on those songs that's true. But what I mean when I say ACE is a sloppy guitar player, is that he's not playing like Eddie van Halen or Steve Vai. ACE has a more loose Style of playing, he's more from the gut kind of player than all the technical tricks and speed playing. That's what made ACE perfect for KISS he gave them there own sound.

I've heard scores of shredders and none of them make me still hum their solos decades later while I'm waiting in line somewhere like Ace.
Any ace is better than today's music by far
You're obviously not listening to any new music.
Keep in mind Ace was not using any processors or compressors so its going to sound raw and dry ,, Ace is all about being authentic and raw , with no enhancements .
Plus, he was just kicked back in a chair and relaxed, not warmed up or at all ready to perform.
He IS

So true!! ðĪ
I loved Ace then and I love Ace now. It's all about how I feel listening to the music. The rest is just talk.
Sloppy is the essence of rock 'n' roll.
And yet it's not.
NO NEVER..It's all about Soul..If one has the Soul..One can get away with bring somewhat sloppy...One can never be just sloppy
He played great solos on Alive, they weren't sloppy, Got To Choose, Rock Bottom, Strutter and the rest were awesome. He was sloppy live because he was drunk but in the studio especially early on he was not sloppy, he rocked and came up with solos that were memorable, melodic and fit perfectly.
You do know the live albums were overdubed right?
You know those live albums were recorded in the studio

ACE was incredible on the ALIVE album! He showed mad skills and he shined on it. Also, if you watch recent guitar tutorial videos, it clearly shows that he does have the chops. Especially since he's been sober.
Ya, there's footage of the Alive era shows all over TH-cam and Ace plays some incredible stuff. ð
Dude, loved the Alive album then, and now, but it's well known that the album was overdubbed.
@@spamfriedmice4800 I believe that most of the overdubbing was the over exaggerated crowd cheering. I believe the playing was, for the most part, actual. Maybe not from the same exact concert throughout the album, but true performances as they happened.
Well, suddenly I don't feel so bad..(in the context of just raw playing with no background ambience, with the gear I have)
lol
Ace is, was, and always will be the Heart of Kiss!
;-)
Wait a minute are you kidding me
Ace is the guy that made me pick up the guitar. I knew all of his solos by heart, on the air guitar. I had a bunch of KISS cards and looking at them always made me feel like the air conditioning was turned on. Oddly, it was ok for me to buy these things, but I was not allowed to listen to the recordings. Finally, at 54 years old, I own a vintage copy of KISS ALIVE ll.
Listen to his lead on 'Let me go, Rock and roll' KISS ALIVE
I argued with a guy that Kiss Alive was a much better album than Alive II. The songs on the records were just okay, until I heard them on Alive. Strutter, Black Diamond 100,000 years are just totally different live. The instruments and chorus is really good.
@@Gamevet agreed G.
I know Stanley freshened up the sound on Alive 1 but it still sounds cool.
I have been an Ace fan since 1977. You are spot on. I can't find anything I disagree with here. As a kid, sometimes I would just put the record player needle on the solos of each song just to hear them. They were exciting, melodic, with great hooks.
Give me Ace over something like Polyphia ANY day of the week. Those Polyphia dudes are talented, no question. But its too technical...too thought out. Crank the amp, turn up the gain, and lets move some effin air. Its rock n roll. It doesnt have to be pretty.

Ace was the reason I wanted to play the guitar âĪ
I saw Ace play with Kiss during the 2000 Farewell Tour in Nashville TN then the next night in Louisville KY. I wondered if he would still be able to rock the old tunes before arriving at the first concert. It was clear after the first few songs, Ace was not only back but he was better than ever.
I saw that same concert in Memphis Tn!! Pretty cool!!
@@vincent7160 That tour was awesome. I've always been a Kiss originalist. Peter and Ace!
I think that's someone in a Guitar Center.
Ace was MUCH BETTER live on Midnight Special. He's had awesome solos over the years, especially between 74 - 81
He had a great gift for hummable solos!
I think youâre a very nice guy.
It's Brad !!!! Love his vLogs and he's a good musician !!
What are you saying?
Swag and Style , that is ACE! I still love em!
Ace hit the ceiling as far as development in about 1979/80. About the same time he started hitting guardrails, poles, other cars, crank etc.
1977
The 1978 solo record was his peak.
To witness Ace when he really had a fire in his belly, watch the video of KISS live on the Midnight Special in the early seventies. No tracks, no overdubs, just incredible melodic solos and tone.
That's a great show.
Ace was perfect for the 70's and Kiss
Ace is proper and fine for all time.
We love you Ace. My fav KISS member.
In 2016 Ace was already old . His prime was 70's and 80's Ace is one of the greatest Rock guitarist . Kiss would be nothing without his sound.
Yep bro definitely on point
Joe Perry would be a good study for this category.
Nothing against Joe but, the guy's been having a tough time for a while.
I've met him on a few personal occasions, he's a really nice guy but...
In my own personal opinion Joe's guitar playing fame was more related to his coolness factor, he just had 'the look' and the persona/character to play it off.
He's always been a very raw player..
while Whitford has always been the polished player.
Great suggestion!
Love to see Whitford get some praises sung, that guy can PLAY, same goes for Derek St. Holmes who was with Ted Nugent, never hear anyone talk about him and yet he is a beast of a musician.
Look, everyone knows Ace is just "Ace". He'll always be the Ace we've always known. He's not Eddie Van Halen. He's not Yngwie Malmsteen. He's not Uli Jon Roth. He's "Ace Frehley". Love him or hate him, he never pretended to be something he wasn't and he always had a good time doing what he does. He's laid-back, real, and along for the ride. He's also made a lot of cool ass songs over the last 50 years. I'm not sure why people constantly hold him to some ultra-high standard when guys who've made kick-ass music like Johnny Ramone and Lemmy Kilminster get a "free pass" for being rough-sounding on stage.
Well said. ð
My favorite Kiss tracks are the studio version of Dr Love and the live cut of RnR All night from the Kiss Alive album, which I know is doctored up with re-recorded performance and not actually 100% live. I've heard that Kiss albums have a lot of tracks laid down by hired session players, so I don't know if Ace actually played the lead guitar on those 2 songs, but if he did then I'm down with Ace on those. I think the solo in Dr Love especially is pretty cool.
some guitar players are great in a chair, some are great in a song, Ace is great in a song. And I think that's way more important than being a solo virtuoso.
Couldn't agree more!
Ace is really good when he wants to be, he sometimes sounds a little sloppy, because hes just having fun
I love the guy
Ace is very penotonic has great vibrato. He is no John F. From the rhcp. Ace does what works for Ace.
That's, that shifty style that's Ace.thats his thimg.
That makes me feel better when I pick up the guitar.
Itâs pretty much what I expected. Ace plays the same now as he did then. It works for him. His solos are memorable. His playing formed the foundation of my playing. 35 years I was frequently accused of sounding too much like him.
I'd take that as a compliment!
I have a friend who has been a lifelong Stones fan and has attended many Stones shows. He told me of one show over 15 years ago where he said Keith looked like a cardboard cutout and didn't sound much better than one.
What Ace Frehley really sounds like on guitar? Shit, apparently. Next please!
Thereâs No Kiss Without Ace! Itâs been a cover band since Ace left!
Ace is back and he told you so
I don't agree with anything you said.
I remember seeing this "Ace Shreds" video awhile back. It was painful. I'd rather listen to Yoko Ono sing. And I'm the biggest Ace fan ever.
So sad that he hasn't progressed since the Frehley's Comet era.
Thanks for your comment and view.
He was more busy taking drugs and drinking than practising his guitar playing. Itâs really a pity, because despite not being outstanding, he really did have the chops. The current live recordings his girlfriend puts on Facebook can be close to embarassing.
He owns his style and that is what I like about him. He is âHere it is.â He doesnât really try to copy anyone.
Wow man, this was really good! I remember when that video came out and I was duly impressed at Ace's performance. But I have to say one thing. He's playing less and less these days. The band is helping. Nothing lasts forever, I suppose, but Ace does keep it pretty real. I think he's lost a bit since the video referenced here.
Playing less and releasing more material. And touring more.
Ace was a lot better back in the day. A little more precise and less sloppy even if was a little simple. He's definitely lost a little bit in his old age but we all will. It's part of life.
Sad but true...
This is why I'm a fan of old time blues guitarists, because what you heard was straight up real no technological help
Ace has his own style and techniques and that's fine with me! He's not flashy or a technical genius but I think he's one of the greatest guitarist in rock! Keep on rockin space Ace ðððĪðĪðļâĄâĄ
He's plays by the Jimmy Page playbook apparently.
1:28 when you can't do the pinch harmonic but pretends that to be a part of your playing
Maybe just go with it. I bet he always does it . Just control it
Grew up in that Kiss era when Kiss ruled the world concert wise . I really couldn't get into Ace , With guys like Robin Trower , Gary Moore and Michael Schenker hitting the scene . Fans didn't see Kiss to see Ace , You saw Ace to see Kiss ð
Sounds exactly how he sounded when he was in his 20s
Parasite is still one of my favorite songs. Killer!
Ace was a big joe walsh fan and they used to get high together and if u listen to joe walsh youll hear alot of ace
Brilliant player. I dn't know why people keep on saying that is ''simple, not technical'', well that is also a technique, actually several of them. and i like that ''dirty'' mean sound, energized with bluesy background. It's easy to play a clean sterile note one you learn basics, but to play this what Ace does is soooo hard. You can hear life, road, experience, emotion. And as i told it's very complicated technically as well. Due technique is not just shred aka fast playing clean, there are x sort of bends and pre bends with dynamic, dirt, scratch, etc. That is why this style is so hard to be copied tone for note and to make exact small sounds and details.
Ace knows the licks, riffs, where to play scales, bends, improvisation at its best,I wish I could play half as good as Ace,period!
jiz n ace from the bronx
Ace is Ace .. if he knew he would be so influential he would have practiced more!!
Playing sloppy is the groove. If you want perfect everything, it sucks the soul out of everything.
As for performing live, Ace was so f'n Cool to watch back in the days when KISS ruled the world. They were a great band that gave a hell of show for the fans.
As far as I am concerned, Ace is a Legend and a Star who should be respected for his achievements. They tried to replace Ace, but only got other guitar players who could play the part, but never fill his boots.
Anyways, â
Was that Ace or Jimmy Page?
lol
Dammit I thought the same shit even though I truly appreciate both as musicians. Sloppy has it's place ð
Yeah right. Be for real. Nowhere near the speed, dexterity, rhythm, improvisational composition, style, or swag.
Thatâs exactly what I was thinking
Yeah that does sound like Jimmy Page
It takes me at least 2 six packs and 8 vodka shots to play like that and Ace can just do it naturally.
I want my rock guitar to play with heart soul over technique
3:00 his daughter , Monique .
No his ex-girlfriend Wendy.
I saw Ace almost a year ago and he was awful. But he's Ace. I once saw Chuck Berry not long before he died.. He was even worse. But same thing. I got to see two legends.
Dude is like my hero, even though KISS the band started sucking when they let him do a 2 bar solo, it was still cool. Now hes in his 70s and I am glad he is still out there, could have easily done too much of something or another and been gone like the other greats. ROCK ON
Sounds the same as KISS ALIVE! Yesssss!!!!!
Johnny Thunders and Ace
People don't want to hear this about their guitar heroes, but sometimes or mostly, they don't play on their own albums. See "Hired Guns" about side men and session musicians. Joe Perry did not play on an album and Ace didn't play much on Creatures as we all know. Very good session musicians can mime style.
He made a career of just knowing Jimmy Page's licks from LZ II.
Just as sloppy as Page too
And page made a career out of playing everyone else's stuff as well ð
@@ACDZ123 Hardly. You can point to a handful of blue songs where that may be true, but you can say the same thing about every other player of that era. His work goes far deeper than that.
As someone else said, sloppy is the essence of rock n' roll. Once everyone started snapping their riffs to a grid in pro tools, rock music lost its human side that really moves people and makes them want to dance.
Ace is so underrated!

So do it Rock n my day.
Ouch.
Yes, Ace is a Rock Guitarist. If you want technical, listen to Holdsworth or Howe. Ace and Jimmy Page have the Rock style that works in a band situation.
Not many players over the decades sound as unique as ace as a kiss fan from 75-79 i dont think ace or anyone has really influenced me other than aces use of bends

don't knock original creation if you don't create, cover players should stfu. Ace also holds the pick in that clip different to most.
Honesly, whenever I see Ace in some interview playing while sitting down (as opposed to standing) heâs always way sloppier sounding. Itâs not his best playing position. Iâve seen him live with his solo band a couple of times within the last 6-8 years (playing standing of course) and he both sounded great and nailed his solos, etc. Heâs just a way better playing standing than sitting.
That's really true, plus in that clip he's just dorking off and demonstrating stuff on the fly. he wasn't warmed up or expecting to perform. Standing is better for him for sure.
Wasnât bad but letâs be honest Ace must slowed down the Heartbreaker solo from Led Zeppelin II by Jimmy Page and tried to replicate so many times itâs ingrained into his unconscious. Maybe quite a few of us have done thisâĶ some more successfully than others. Itâs true that for a band to get and maintain success then they have got to be pretty good. This is no miming guitarist although virtually all TV appearances these days are mimed. But if you look carefully at say Chuck Berryâs rig on TV from the 1950s you can see his guitar isnât plugged in. Same with plenty of acts throughout the sixties and seventies, eighties etc. That includes The Stones and Beatles. One exception was Hendrix credit due to him but even when he was on Top of the Pops in the UK they put Hermanâs Hermits record for the Experience to mime to by mistake. It was a funny clipâĶ I donât know if itâs on TH-cam?
Ya, miming's been around forever... And next up... avatars!
He's been brutal for years. Decades actually
Ace is one of the best lead guitarists of all time !! I saw kiss in august 1977 and then about 10 years ago !! I was so impressed with Ace when i first started studying music in fact i started playing in 1975 !! I always felt he was ahead of his time!!
I absolutely love Ace. I'd listen to him over a malmsteen any day
"Hindsight is twenty-twenty." (i.e. It was perfect back then. Today, not so much maybe.)
I won't say Ace sucked but I can't say his leadwork or chops ever made me stop and go, "Whoa, let's hear that again." I guess the fair descriptor to use is he was serviceable; he did what worked for the band he played in (i.e., Kiss). But he's nothing to write home about.
I dunno I grew up with him but I think he stands out from many players due to his uniqueness...I don't think he had chops that Noone had ever heard before or stuff yet to be tapped in to but being unique carries more weight than technicality ??!!??!!??ðĪðĪ
He also had what it takes to write create tour and be somewhat responsible I bet he's had to be up hungover or perform more than I've ever had to hhhhhhha
Ace might be good for the Stones.
