Ostara Tarot: "I'd like a deck from each of these artists, but not all together." YES! That makes sense and that's exactly how I feel about this deck. There are SO MANY beautiful cards, but it's not a cohesive deck when it comes to artstyle and energy.
I agree that a lot of the modern decks read young. When I’m wanting a deck that more closely resembles my reality, I usually grab the Gaian Tarot. My favorite Maiden/Mother/Crone oracle is the Lantern Oracle. I’d love more suggestions, though!
I’ll have to check out the Lantern Oracle. Also BoHo your so talented. I cannt even draw a good stick person. Have you ever considered making your own Indie Deck?? If anyone on TH-cam is qualified….that’s you for sure:))). A girl can dream.
Lantern Oracle feels like a drone deck to me. Yes, it has maidens and mothers, but it feels like it’s looking back on those states from an older perspective. And Gaian feels like it was made for me, like Lightseer’s is for Millennials and Gaian is for me.
Also, just thinking, it could be super interesting if you ever wanted to show which decks you think of as mother energy and which ones as crone. Because I agree they can be so hard to find. Especially that mother energy, I find that one can be hardest for me to pin down in a deck.
I don't feel I'm a cardstock snob. Like you I simply want to shuffle the deck with ease. I don't mind having to side shuffle or corner shuffle as long as it mixes the deck and is a fun experience for me. I love a good riffle and bridge! I enjoyed seeing what you are thinking of re-homing. I can't control the Pagan Otherworlds either, I found another home for it pretty quickly after I got it. It is a beautiful deck though.
I'm glad to know I'm not the only one! I think sometimes creators/publishers forget that these are tools not artwork to hang on the wall. I just want to be able to actually use my decks! 😁
Cardstock can definitely make or break my relationship to a deck! No matter how much I love the imagery, if I can't work with the cardstock, I ultimately can't work with the deck. I've looked at the Ostara several times and never bought it. Some of the cards are so pretty but, yeah, it doesn't quite gel for me and I don't love them all. Thanks for showing it in depth.
I've been waiting for this video 😆 I always say that this is why I read negative reviews whenever they're available: sometimes the very reason why something doesn't work for someone else is why it will click for me, and I find that when we voice our frustrations... It's often more candid. When we like something it's like when someone has a crush. The rose colored glasses often sound like they're still on? Like I feel I can't trust a positive review, but I'll pay attention to the details in a negative review? I know these aren't negative reviews as much as you explaining why these decks don't work for you... My purgatory decks are the 5 cent Tarot (plus the 2 Penny Oracle) (all I can see is the keywords... It's all I see which I hate because I adore the cardstock and see it was made with love and creativity 😩), and I'm having a hard time with the Moonchild (I'm just... Not connecting with it... But maybe it's right now... I'll give it a moment). I hope to be able to rehome/gift them to people in my country with an interest in Tarot that connect with them. 😅
This makes me realize I have a hard time with the Deviant Moon too! And I got both the Moonchild Tarot and the Deviant Tarot because they seemed like "classics", and I wanted to understand why.
I'm the same with book reviews - the negative/meh reviews will just as often reveal specific tropes/elements that I love (which might not be obvious from the book marketing) as it will the things I dislike and want to avoid.
I love the textured tarot, and I love the eco friendliness of it. I feel kind of lucky that so far, Im cardstock isnt a deal breaker for me. Always love watching your content. ❤️ 🙌
I love how you are respectful to the artist that you do not mesh with. also, i just want to say.. you and I are not on the same spiritual plain. ( not a bad thing). I love listening to everything you say. even if we don't agree. I appreciate you honesty and respectfulness of all.. thank you for your sharing and I look forward to more videos :)
If the New Chapter Tarot has the same cardstock as the Luna Sol Tarot, I trimmed the borders off and it shuffles like a dream now! Bonus points for being borderless!
A few surprises there for sure. Although none of these are decks i have. It just goes to show that a deck that other people adore can just not be the right deck for you. And when you have others, there's no need to hang on to something that makes you feel meh.
I completely agree with you on the Pagan Otherworlds. I couldn’t wait to get it, but I never ever use it. The card stock annoys me so much. I want decks that I can shuffle and break in and make my own. I love cards when they’re worn in and well-loved, but the Pagan Otherworlds begs to be babied. It just feels somewhat precious and while the artwork is beautiful, it just feels cold to me. I just can’t connect with it. That said, I completely understand why so many absolutely adore it. It is gorgeous.
I totally hear what you’re saying. You describe it as cold, but I would say more “distant” (Fountain Tarot feels cold to me). But it’s exactly bc of that distance that I use PO as my Trauma deck; the distance is like the professionalism of a therapist. It’s so interesting how different or similar ppl’s perspectives are on the same deck!
@@alexandraweeks4728 Yes, “distant” is a much better word to describe the PO. My response to it is very visceral. I find it both beautiful and upsetting. It may be that I’m just not in the right place to work with it, but will be at some point. I really appreciate your thoughts on it. It’s very interesting to get different perspectives on these things.
Oh man I feel you on the cardstock issue on the Textured but I'm SO SAD you'll probably let it go -- but I also completely understand - I wish it would be printed on something more usable. Not surprised the Deviant Moon is moving back out. The Pagan Otherworlds remains a deck I think is pretty and rarely have any desire to use - I think it may not end up staying but we'll see!! :D The others - no surprises there!
Okay, first off many of these same decks are in my purgatory for the exact same reasons. NOT NOT NOT a YOU problem on Pagan Otherworlds - it ejects itself (was going to use another word but we're in public) all over the room every time I try to shuffle it, so definitely the hyper-slicky cardstock is at fault. It ain't us! The artwork is phenom and therefore I haven't sold it, but it grinds my jaw every time I try to shuffle it. It's like the cards hate each other physically, as they repel against themselves. Aside from that one, card-boardy stock is a deal-killer, period regardless the merit of the deck otherwise. And what on earth makes a deck bow, especially if it's such thick cardboard you can't even get a hint of a bend in it in order to shuffle??? I'm convinced the reason I now need hand surgery is b/c I've forced myself to shuffle decks that won't budge under false illusion they will eventually "break in." They won't. Ever. It's about time someone "outed" these outrageous quality problems to warn others away! Good Job, Dawn Michelle! Lifting one forya!
Hehe so many non-public words came to mind for me too. 🙂 I feel like sometimes we (as a community) poo-poo people when they talk about cardstock, but it's a legit issues. These are physical tools and we need to be able to physically work with them. 🙂
Pugatory purgatory lets all dance in purgatory. I think I just made up a song. I enjoy these reflection videos where you share what decks work and these decks that worked for a time but not long term. Most tarot practices grow and change over time. And one of the great things about tarot is it continues to surprise me. Thanks Dawn.
You could always just leave the 5th suit out of the deck with the 5th suit. Maybe try working with the deck without that suit shuffled in and see how it goes. My one major suggestion is that you hold on to the Deviant Moon until after Halloween. Try it during that season and see how you feel about it. 😊
Hi there. Regarding the 5th suit. I came across an interesting comment from Rose Gwain's book Discovering Your Self through the Tarot. In the Introduction part she talks about more "ordinary" people these days attain higher reaches of consciousness. It's as if a fifth suit that of Spirit which is derived from the archetypal realm beyond the Fool that reflects the realities of life and the Higher Self in the physical form but below the realm of spirit. Nice to find out things like this. Best wishes in your further evaluations. Gay Avice du Buisson (another account)
I understood exactly what you meant when you were talking about slippery cardstock. I have a deck that's just like that and it's not you being uncoordinated! My deck slips through my hands while shuffling and once I set it down, the cards are sliding off of one another. It's a lot of energy to keep that deck still!
I have a couple like this right now and wish there was something opposite of fanning powder for this purpose. There might be but IDK what it is yet LOL
I love your purgatory videos, I feel the same on Ostara and I have to say the same on shuffling, I need to be able to shuffle without my rhythm being thrown out of wack!
Deviant Moon? Wow! That's a twist I haven't seen coming! 😆 Jokes aside, it's always a joy to listen to your thoughts and experiences. And I completely agree with the cardstock on the New Chapter Tarot. I don't think I've ever mentioned it because I have other bigger issues with the deck, but YES! It's so hard to shuffle!
Thank you for suggesting pairing The Universal Folk Oracle with Hush Tarot - I just tried it and it is marriage made in heaven! Especially the colours, they match pefectly. (I love the oracle but couldn't figure out how to use it - now I know. Thanks again.)
It's kinda foundational to how I read tarot so it throws me off when that energy appears as a suit of its own. Then I'm like, what the heck am I supposed to do with the Majors? Lol
@@DawnMichelleTarot Right. Perhaps the Majors in that context can be viewed as the individual suits (5 in this case) in direct expression and manifestation. Like The Empress experiences Cups when she's wistful, Pentacles when she's meditating, Swords when she's in her imagination, and Wands when she's cocreating in her power. And The High Priestess can be expressing her intuitive gifts within those areas, as well. So the Majors can be examples of each Suit: Water, Earth, Air, Fire,... and Spirit.
Ahhh .. I wish I can say that about shuffling but then I have small hands because I am petite in size .. and I have arthritis in my hands … which sadly makes shuffling impossible with most decks. If I found a deck I can shuffle, it’s magic! So, I shuffle sideways or in my hands .. which isn’t ideal but it’s what it is. Pagan otherworld .. isn’t for me somehow. I wanted for awhile back in 2015-2017 and suddenly .. I stopped wanting it. I don’t know why but somehow I don’t feel any need to bring it to my home .. similarly with Mary-El .. I don’t know why but I am embracing it as it comes. I love the efflorescence tarot . I have the w&b version. I got it when it came out .. I am not sure if it is a plastic card stock .. mine seemed laminated cardboard but I got my deck very early when they had around 20 sales on their shop. It’s actually my 2nd deck because I spent most of my tarot practice using the universal tarot .. it is my very fist Indie deck before I knew indie decks exist .. at that time .. it blew my mind to buy the deck directly from the artist .. I actually went on and got Prisma vision 1st edition directly from James too which felt luxurious back then because going from universal tarot to Prisma vision is a huge jump! Efflorescence tarot was unique enough then so I couldn’t imagine. Good old times! I wish I can relive those moments again. I actually carried my efflorescence tarot to work for the whole year. It was my prized deck and it read me so well Edit: not the deviant moon! Oh .. but you gave it a chance and it’s great that it came in your life. I know a huge reason why I and my family enjoy the DM is because of our Scorpio planets .. I find that all my sisters with Scorpio in their birth chart somewhere prominent… loves it. It’s very Scorpio energy imo :)
I love that you‘re vocal about your wishes and that you will even decide against a deck if it is not produced the way you want it to be. This is the only way to make publishers listen to the consumers. I got the new Celtic Spirit Oracle by Rockpool today and will send it back since the cards are too flimsy and so badly produced that the edging came off immediately and some of the cards were even a little worn as if they had been used for a long time although it was a brand-new, shrinkwrapped deck. I hope that many buyers will do the same to make them step up their game.
A tarot villager Aspasia Rising has nicknamed the Deviant Moon the "Deviant Dude" 😂 And now I can't call it anything else! And it definitely was not me, it was him 🤷🏻♀️ At least I gave him the good ole college try!
I have the same issues with card stock. I have broken my right hand a few times, so if the cards are stiff it actually causes pain. I trimmed my deviant moon deck. I took all the titles off. My deck arrived damaged on 1 corner through about half the deck and for what I paid it wasn't worth it to return it. So I played around with modding and edging it. It turned out ok. Learned not to use sharpie for edging lol.
Re usability of the Pagan Otherworld. It’s soooo slippery! I’ve seen it trimmed, and it looks really good. I have some luck with side shuffling or corner shuffling oversized cards, which still gives you that good riffle mix without requiring you to palm the whole card. But, yeah, cardstock challenges can be so disappointing.
Cardstock is important for the exact reason you mention! I do the same, shuffling is therapeutic for me. This killed the New Chapter and Textured decks for me TY, and Textured was pricey IIRC. Love it but not if I can't use it like you say. I'm a collector who actually likes to use my decks 😊 but at the prices these days I'm sorry but I'm going to be picky. (ETA I want to know your mother/crone decks too... I can't think of one offhand and that's sad)
Pagan Otherworlds ? I can't imagine parting with it. I totally understand what you're saying - I just feel sad that you have issues with that one ♥️ Several other favourites of mine too but PO is the one 💥😖 As always I enjoyed your video, thank you for your honesty 👍
PO is my favourite deck by far - it's classic but fresh, the colour palette is easy on the eyes, it's simple but deep, the cards interact with each other, and the card stock is perfection (slidy but not slippery, I enjoy the texture, love the coolness to touch, and the smell!) If I had to run this would be the deck I grab on the way out, lol.
I love watch this vids it creates a more mindful way how in the future tarot can improve. And yes, after learning the hard way I do not think about buying another tarot that does not have the original system, hello Dreams of Gaia / Witches Wisdom tarot😕 not point, and about card stock I can live with it
I’ve had the same exact experience with the Diviant Moon. I ordered the Trionfi Della Luna illustrated pips anyway and I’m so glad I did. The illustrated pips is “my” Valenza deck. Maybe it will be yours as well. I’d love to see a video of your thoughts on it when you get it in.
I never found deviant moon appealing, but I’ve been enjoying the trionfi illustrated the last few days. you’re the second person this month who’s getting rid of Pagan Otherworlds because of the slipperiness. I find that funny since that deck is always highly talked about for only the good. I also don’t like decks that i can’t handle properly. I haven’t purchased Textured Tarot hoping that one day they’ll change the card stock. it’s been on my wishlist forever.
Welcome! I do make my own bags and I occasionally I post some for sale. I don't do it often, but I do usually try to make a post here on youtube when I've added some to my shop!
Cardstock that I have a hard time with: the mass market Antique Anatomy tarot. It's so cardboardy. The imagery and the guidebook are brilliant but I got it because people said the publisher had made the cardstock better and its still tarot on horrible cardboard.... :(
We're you able to handle the first edition they made? It was so incredibly flimsy, like an index card or just thick paper. While the second printing was much more sturdy, I do agree that it is still less than stellar.
@@Cedar.and.Sulfur I didn’t get the very first mass market copies. Just bought it this month. And its thick stiff cardstock that feels like if I riffle shuffle it wouldnt bounce back lol so I overhand. But the art and guidebook makes it a keeper. I just wished I had gotten the indie.
I think I did a video on something similar to that, I may have called them mom decks because I do kinda associate those energies together. I’m pretty sure I’ve talked about it more detail in member videos as well. My mother decks would be things like my Mysteries of Mary and the crone would be decks like my Dark Goddesses. I guess that energy is all wrapped up in divinity for me too. 😊
Off topic - I have an oracle deck, I love the guidebook & the card meanings are very unique. But the cards have no keywords and art doesn't really help you remember the card meaning. So I want to write key words. It's a gloss finish. Any suggestions on a pen/marker that would take to a gloss and not smear or rub off? My next ponder if that fails - is to ask you about deck modes that you've done. I have seen you re-back a deck, but I had a crazy thought to recover the front of the deck with my own chosen images. Sounds like a lot of work and I just think it would ruin the shuffle and not hold up well. How have your re-covers worked in past over time & use? It's just a great shadow work deck- depth like no other I've seen. So I want to find a way to make it more user friendly.
I have tried writing on glossy cards myself, I doubt sharpie would work as it rubs off standard cardstock. Maybe a paint pen? As for recovering the front, yes, I've done that many times! There was one deck that I had the exact experience with, I liked everything about the deck except the actual artwork so I just collaged over the fronts and made my own images. I did a similar process with the Antique Anatomy. For that one, I loved the images but I wanted to add my own stuff to the cards, its the same basic collage concept. I do have a video on that one if you want to see that collage process. It's a really fun process, I just wouldn't be in a rush cause it takes a while. 🙂
@@DawnMichelleTarot I went video hoping Ha. I did see where you used paint on Crystal Vision. I liked the way that looked. It took me a bit but I found a 7 part video where you did a collage on the fronts of Akashic Tarot. th-cam.com/video/BEcK2GF0N08/w-d-xo.html Hope that link works if anyone else is interested. I think I am going to practice first on a deck I was ready to re-home. Then I will do it to the deck I like. Thanks for the tips!
Those of us who still riffle shuffle have issue with all these decks that are made from cardstock that isn't meant to be shuffled. The complaint is that is a deck of cards is meant to be shuffled and used and some of these decks are made with materials that would be better suited to hanging on a wall. I hope that clears things up.
I love the art style of The New Chapter....but that card on the box ( High Priestess, Empress???) with that crazed look on the one women's face...it just turned me off. It just gave me the stereotypical "crazy old lady" feeling....of course, I'm sure the card meaning is not that...but I can't even look at that box. It's a me problem. I agree about plastic decks. It feels so cheap in my hands. I can forgive crummy cardstock in vintage decks, but it irritates me in new decks when there are so many great cardstock choices now. I never bought the Universal Folk Oracle because I never saw you feature it on your channel....ha ha. I love the art style, but it's too "young" for me. I bought the Wild Goddess because I have a big collection of Tretchikoff prints and the creators used some of Tretchikoff's images in the deck. I've never wanted one of Patrick's decks and particularly the Deviant Moon, but I have ordered the new illustrated pips deck and hoping I like it!
I agree, I hate that card lol. I have the deck, but I have to say that I really do not like that one card especially. I believe it’s the High Priestess.
No! Not the Pagan Otherworlds! That is my favourite card stock - it feels like heaven (sometime I just hold them in my hands caressing the cards because the feel of the finish soothes me), they shuffle fantastic and fan like nothing else. And the smell! Wonderfull! Sometimes I think about re-homing all my other decks just because they don't feel like this one, lol. P.S. I understand that your hands are small so how about trimming the PO?
@@DawnMichelleTarot Yes, trimming always doesn't work but better to try it than to give the deck away. Either way, best of luck with whatever decision you make!

Like The Empress experiences Cups when she's wistful, Pentacles when she's meditating, Swords when she's in her imagination, and Wands when she's cocreating in her power. And The High Priestess can be expressing her intuitive gifts within those areas, as well. So the Majors can be examples of each Suit: Water, Earth, Air, Fire,... and Spirit.
Hmm that's really interesting. I'll have to play with that idea! 🙂
@@DawnMichelleTarot It's a compelling concept, for sure! Each of the Majors can be magically using each of the 5 suits. Spiritual gifts and powers.
It was my prized deck and it read me so well
Edit: not the deviant moon! Oh .. but you gave it a chance and it’s great that it came in your life.
I feel you on the New Chapter Tarot. Love it, but it's impossible to use due to the card stock.
A tarot villager Aspasia Rising has nicknamed the Deviant Moon the "Deviant Dude" 😂 And now I can't call it anything else! And it definitely was not me, it was him 🤷🏻♀️ At least I gave him the good ole college try!
Hehe I love that!
I am curious which decks you like for the mother energy or the crone energy.
I'm definitely going to try to get a video made about that! 🙂
I totally understand what you're saying - I just feel sad that you have issues with that one ♥️ Several other favourites of mine too but PO is the one 💥😖
As always I enjoyed your video, thank you for your honesty 👍
Let's hope so cause I just got my shipping notification! 🙂
Not me trying to hold back to do "maidenless" jokes (references to Elden Ring game haha)
I feel exactly the same about the ostara tarot and i finally decided to find him a new home
New sub, love your content. Do you make and sell your tarot bags? They’re lovely.
New chapter is hard to shuffle ,I over hand
I speed up the vid to 1,5, and u sound sooo sassy haha 😂 like these vids!
Hehe I bet that's entertaining! 🙂
The Textured does have the worst stock ever. So bad it makes me not want to use the deck which is criminal cause the images speak tons....
I'd love to know what decks you associate as 'mother decks' and 'crone decks' please? Thank you.
Thank you 🙏
Off topic - I have an oracle deck, I love the guidebook & the card meanings are very unique.
Have you already sold the Ostara tarot?
Yes, that deck has been rehomed already. Some of them went quick! 🙂
I gave up riffle shuffling long ago. I just overhand everything now. So your card stock complaints are confusing to me.
@@DawnMichelleTarot yea I see where you are coming from. Also I have giant hands so cards that are an issue for others tend to not be for me.
Amy Zerner and Monte Farber are married.
I've been considering trimming for several years now. I think it would work, but I'm kinda half scared too lol.
@@DawnMichelleTarot Yes, trimming always doesn't work but better to try it than to give the deck away. Either way, best of luck with whatever decision you make!
