Another reason why rom dumping is so important. Companies can just snap their fingers and thousands of software and games become lost to time. At least it would be if it weren't for community efforts
@@user-yk1cw8im4h I think games are public property when the company doesnt give a shit anymore. Pirating is not great when the company still sells it and has the service. Piracy is the right way when the company abandons it.
Nintendo: "We're closing the eShop and leaving several games impossible to obtain legally or require you to pay an outrageous amount on Amazon or eBay to own a physical copy of. Deal with it." Hackers: *"Oh no! Anyways..."*
in my opinion Nintendo should not be shutting down the eshop how are people gonna pay and download the games without the eshop nothing is really making any sense at all as to why Nintendo is shutting down the eshop
Not to mention even reproduced physical copies. There isn't any purely functional reason to get an original now other than like nostalgia or collecting or whatever.
@@jeremiahbrown6839 Running the eshop (or any online service for that matter) cost money and Nintendo clearly feels that they are losing more money keeping it alive than they are likely to make. It sucks but it does make sense. Of course our community wants to keep things going even if it doesn't make fiscal sense and it would be nice if Nintendo at least made it easier for us to do so but their business side is still stuck in the past.
Even if you bought a used physical copy the money wouldn't even go to Nintendo anyway, they literally don't have a way to make money of these games anymore. Unless of cause they rerelease them (probably for an outrageous price), and they won't do that for the majority of these games
This is what I've always said: when the company stops selling a game indefinitely, it ceases to be piracy and becomes preservation. It falls upon us to preserve the past when the Big 3 won't.
Nintendo disagrees with you. Look at what they're doing to their game music. Literally no official way to listen to it and yet they still try to wipe it off the internet.
That's what Nintendo wants you to do, they want games that are last gen or older to be free. If you recal Nintendo hated Blockbuster and any other game rental services and took them to court for costing them money. So now to get back at videogame rental services and to insure they stay a relic of the past nintendo has fully endorced and made policys to encurage piracy.
tell that to gary bowser haha,. its not worth going to prison for, or paying millions to Nintendo for the rest of your life, for old ass games,. good games, but its still not worth the trouble,.
It is still piracy, you don't own the rights to the game. Companies can bring these games back, look at NSO or any compilations like the Castlevannia Collection. And really, with that mind set, if you have any roms of games that were no longer available for sale for a number of years and then were brought back, you should buy then even if you are not going to play them. Using your words, it becomes piracy again.
The 3ds sold so many units. Yet Nintendo is forgetting about that handheld’s user base. From a business standpoint I can understand the Wii U. But the 3ds? Really Nintendo?
This goes far beyond gaming. Companies that sell cars, farm equipment, appliances and phones all want to retain control of the things you buy so they make make you buy them again and again.
@@papapapa16 Yeah but it's a step further than that. It's no longer just planned but forced. It's very possible that, in the not too distant future, we won't be owning anything but merely leasing our products from john deer, tesla, sony, Microsoft and amazon.
Except Nintendo doesn't re-sell ny of these games. They take the shit offline and then laugh in your face without letting you even TRY to buy it again...then they get pissed when you pirate despite you not having any other option. period.

You can replace your broken 3ds and still keep you digital titles. There is a process that you can do to switch systems and moving your Nintendo account linked to the system to another 3ds. I’ve done it before through Nintendo by calling them and giving them both systems model # located on the bottom of the 3ds or under the battery. Keep those codes safe.
I've done that when I upgraded from a 2DS to a New 3DS XL. That, however, doesn't solve the problem of digital-only titles no longer being available to those who don't already own them (or whose console might subsequently break, or those who purchase discontinued consoles in the future) when the eShop closes and, later on, when even redownloads eventually become impossible.
I got my first 3DS last year when the prices came down. It's been an incredible system for homebrew stuff, on top of the good library. I can recomend getting into it.
Probably has to do with its handheld capability. I would imagine if the Switch was TV only, then the 3DS would still be around. The 3DS is just irrelevant to Nintendo.
Switch is sooooo dope tho. I haven't touched my gaming pc in months bc I sometimes don't feel like sitting at a desk to play a game for a few minutes, I don't have time like that anymore.
Not so much kill but the 3ds ran its course, its a great machine but all things have to come to an end eventually. Which is gonna happen to switch once the successor is out.
I softmodded my 2DS a while back...only to discoverer that there is NOT a lot in the 3DS library that I enjoy. Honestly, the original DS library had more games for me. which thankfully the 2/3DS plays just fine.
Yea, digitally on the 3DS there's maybe 50 or so games (including SNES games if you own a NEW 3DS) that are worth owning. Rest of the 3DS library can be bought physically.
There are a lot of 3DS games that I love. I _think_ the 3DS has my favorite library out of any console. My only gripe with the 3DS library is that every mainline Pokémon on it is either mediocre or garbage. It has better Zeldas than the DS, a better Animal Crossing, arguably better Mario Kart, an actual Metroid game, mother fucking Xenoblade, better Kingdom Hearts, lots of Fire Emblem games, and probably more I'm forgetting to mention. The 3DS is an RPG _monster_ with a lot of good games from other genres, but I can see how some people wouldn't be as into the 3DS.
I felt the same about its game library. However, don't forget about VC. It's a serious strength of the console. I've played through all the oldschool zeldas, Seiken Densetsu 3, pokemon hacks, Star Ocean (snes) and Mother 2 & 3 on it, as well as other titles.
Honestly, I'm the exact opposite. I only have a few DS games but I already own most of what I want, where as, I've already got around 30 3DS games and I could easily come up with another 30 I'd love to pick up.
If you don't have or don't want to use a DS flashcart, you can still take all your DS games with you in a 3DS. Install TWiLight Menu++ on the 3DS and stick your *.nds roms in oms ds on your SD card. Most of them will work perfectly; a handful don't though it's in active development and the compatibility list is still growing. You can even copy your physical DS game cards into your 3DS without touching a computer: boot to Godmode9, go into the [C:] GAMECART drive, select whatever.trim.nds, Y to copy, B to back out, navigate to [0:] SDCARD oms ds, Y to paste, optionally R+X to rename it to something that isn't gibberish. If there's a save on the cart you want, repeat to get the .sav file, put in inside oms ds\saves, and make sure it's named the same as the .nds file.
As always excellent content. Dare I say, another example as to why physical media is so important ...and why preservation by any means becomes ever more necessary as vendors ramp up their efforts to stop people having ongoing access to the material they legally own. (I'm sure that's a form of theft.)
Awesome as usual. One important thing I would point out in this guide is that this method preserves the ROM, but not the save, which would be important to someone trying to migrate their library over. Might be helpful for a possible part 2 on how to back up saves using something like Checkpoint or JKSM. One tricky thing about saves is when it comes to extracting saves from Virtual Console injections - GBA games, which actually run natively on the hardware, have a process within Godmode9 that allow you to back them up (AFAIK someone recently made a utility that makes this process a lot less tedious, but I haven't looked into it). For GB injections it's just a matter of extracting GB raw save (for use in other GB emulators) from a Checkpoint/JKSM save extract. SNES injected saves are a lot more complicated, and involves an editing of the hex of the header to something that can work on other SNES emulators. But I digress, there's probably a million exceptions like this, but I imagine most people will want their 3DS saves + Virtual Console saves the most. Great vid!
Homebrew has always been the answer. It's always so cool to see what you can do on homebrewed systems. Even before the eShop was announced to close, it's much more convenient to have your dumped games on whatever console (this doesnt apply to only 3ds) and you can still have the ease of use/portability of digital games, keep your legally obtained physical cartridge from getting damaged/lost/stolen/etc(imagine having to replace one of the older games you can't even find for a fair price anymore like Luigi's Mansion or Zelda: Twilight Princess), and you can save tons of money over many purchases since you can often find preowned copies significantly cheaper at secondhand stores and online stores, like ebay and amazon. Not to mention the ease of playing older console games on newer consoles instead of lugging around extra devices with you, especially if they weren't the portable ones. Of course, you're going to have some difficulties if you wanted to play online, but if you're okay without that, there's tremendous upside to make up for it, especially once online services are no longer available. Another great thing it allows is comfortable couch gaming if you have a gaming computer. Buy your pre-owned physical copy, dump the game and run it on your TV in an emulator. Nice comfortable viewing experience, and you can use your favorite controller(s). You can also transfer save games back to your console, if you're going on a long trip/vacation. I could go on with this TEDx Presentation, but the point is the benefits of homebrew far outweigh the drawbacks/ online functionality(personal opinion).
@@a75431a This is correct. Nothing illegal is being performed, just not news that consumers want to hear. Both WiiU and 3DS will still function with purchased games. Rather than shut down the eShop, Nintendo should outsource it to another service like Steam or GoG. For now the best thing to do is mod these consoles and backup everything.
Because what they are doing isn't illegal. A rich guy can open up his own movie theater and refuse to sell tickets to anyone else as he claims the theater for himself. It is a jerk move, but it isn't illegal. Nintendo is copying the Disney Vault technique of hiding good and old content in a Vault and then opening it up for a limited time every so often to make a lot of money and then toss it back in the Vault. Why do you think 3D All Stars sold so well ? It wasn't just a limited time thing, Super Mario Sunshine was part of the package and that never got a modern release prior and so people wanted it, they NEEDED it. Artificial rarity.
If anyone likes 2D action games, try Kokuga. It's a tank-based shooter that has stealth elements that don't suck. It vaguely reminds me of Soldiers of Fortune/Chaos Engine, but more futuristic and with better controls. If these companies were smart about closing storefronts, they would have closeout sales to really up the income before they go offline, but I guess they're just too smart for that...
It is a good thing we have that active dumping community forsome years now. This wasnt always the case. There are some games that were only released for the Genesis or SNES via satelite or cable download and some of them are still not found.
For what it's worth, in 2014 had to sell my first Wii U on which I had already made a couple of purchases. Once I was able to get another one, about a year later, I contacted customer support, and they were able to transfer all my purchases/licenses to the new system. The only thing they required were the serial number of the new system, and my previous NNID. I imagine something like this would (at least technically) be possible for new or formatted 3DS systems as well. If they are still willing to do that, is another question. It was NoE support, too, so I'm not sure if NoA and other regional branches would do it.
Thanks for making this. I've already modded my 3DS, but more easily understandable information is always great, especially cause the guides can be a bit confusing or forget to mention everything (also thanks for the game recommendations) One of my favorite games ever, Shin Megami Tensei IV, -was only released digitally in Europe- (actually I think it was a different SMT game), and US physical copies are really expensive. I adore that game, and knowing it will be even harder to obtain legally just saddens me

He means a official Nintendo Software that does this. Nintendo gets money for the games, and then fucks off when they dont need you anymore. ITS ALWAYS the community that has to pick up the pieces and create software and homebrew solutions/ hack solutions to make these backups even possible.

Something I don't understand about the e-shop closing situation. From an infrastructure standpoint, the e-shop is handled by a server farm somewhere in the world. The shop has to do two things: process payments and deliver game files. Nintendo closing the e-shop is tantamount to removing the payment processing part, meanwhile, the download part will reportedly still be active for the forseable future. How come the payment processing needs to be shut down but not the file handling part, when the later would clearely be the most costly part to opperate in term of processing power and data storage? Unless there are contractual issues between the payment processor (credit card companies) and Nintendo, there is no clear reason why you should not be allowed to buy new titles until the complete shutdown of the server farm, including the file handling part: But obviously the answer here is corporate greed, programmed obsolescence and artificial scarcity.
There might by dev time and cost attached to keeping the payment part secure and up to date. Since they don't update the 3DS anymore, it might not even be possible to secure a connection at some point, because feature X would need to be added or fixed.
@@widardd This is most likely correct. Secure payment systems are a b**ch to maintain, and some companies will require security reviews done on a regular basis. If you don't earn any significant money from these shops, it is often easier and cheaper to just close them. A download server on the other hand is extremely cheap to run (low cpu usage and in this case, even low storage requirements), and they are simple and easy to maintain. For that reason Nintendo might keep them running for quite some time.
Funny how both the major Japanese companies are shutting down their digital storefronts for older systems, but the only major US company still lets people buy games digitally & has no plans on shutting down it's older systems online store & even found a way to link a large majority of purchases to their newer systems for future use. I'm sure this comment won't age well but here's hoping...
I think they just want to wind the momentum down to a halt over time. Eventually, people will lose interest altogether in a platform for which they can't buy anything online, even if they have a digital library already. A few diehards may stick around and redownload stuff occasionally, but the cost of dealing with them will be very minor compared to what it is now.

3:49 Fun fact about NTRboot. This method will never cease to exist. It exploits a hardware problem that's present on all 2ds/3ds models, on which they read a small part of data from an NDS cartridge under certain conditions at boot. Althoug a DS flashcard will cost you some money, it is in my opinion the best way to play DS games on the 3ds. Also, they're quite cheap. I got mine for 2$ brand new.

I hope Nintendo's plans with pushing the Nintendo Account to be universal for the customers for everything Nintendo covers legacy systems. With tiny sand grain of chance, they could go the Xbox360 route and have the e-shops open at least in a web browser and download to a connected console on the Nintendo Account.
How do you that in xbox 360? Is it only available for US store? I have a latin america account because games are cheap there (my console and physical location are Asia though). I can't buy first party games like Gears, Fable and many others saying my physical location doesn't match.

I don't think that your opening statement is correct. You can still add funds directly via credit/debit card using a computer to add them to your linked Nintendo account (the same as you do for Switch) after the cutoff. You don't need to rely on eshop cards at all. They are just removing the facility to add funds directly through the 3DS itself, the same as Sony did ages ago.
minor corrections/things you should've said list as I'm listening: 1. You should've mentioned, to allay fears that Nintendo will patch everything, that ntrboot is literally unpatchable. It, and sighax, which the installed softmod uses, are vulnerabilities in the bootroms. 2. GodMode9 does not bypass permissions for writing areas, it boots under its own kernel with full system access. Instead, what you are likely thinking of is the permissions system that it has in place to lower the risk that the user screws up accidentally by both indicating the danger levels of what they're doing and making sure you can't just mash a button through. 3. You should have said why you may pick one type of CIA over another. The difference is down to the TMD, ticket, and compressibility: - Standard: This preserves the least (but you will still be able to enjoy the game just fine, don't worry), but is decrypted by default and thus compressible. Cannot be converted into the other two (because the original TMD and ticket are both signed by Nintendo and this uses generic non-signed ticket and TMD). - Legit -> legit: This preserves all the data, including your personalized ticket, to the point that if you were to reinstall this on the same system with the same account you would be able to access it without CFW. From this you can derive the other two if you later so wished. - Legit -> "piratelegit": This preserves all the data, except your personalized ticket. This is the standard format for wider preservation as it's verifiable (unlike Standard, preserves the TMD) and non-unique (unlike Legit -> legit), so you can hash to verify. With this you can derive Standard but not Legit -> legit (because the ticket is signed by Nintendo and this uses a generic non-signed ticket). Thank you for making this video, the word needs spread.
I was hesitant to mod my 3ds. But afterwards I realized how awesome it is. You can run any ds ROM from twilight menu. Rip all your 3ds and ds carts to files. Install BACKUPS (lol) of any 3ds game as if they were installed from the eShop. You can even find utilities that create virtual console apps for any ROM from snes nes GBA etc. Pretty much all of this using a backbone Nintendo emulation/software so it works flawlessly. This thing can become a hub for an archive of 30 years of Nintendo games. The only thing it's missing is Nintendo 64 and it would be the perfect Nintendo retro library archive.
There honestly needs to be a change of management from Nintendo entirely, to just brush away such a success is basically shooting yourself in the foot. Nintendo please. Stop this path of forgetting about the classics and preserve your legacy, the legacy people young and old can enjoy anytime of the year, with games new and old
I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again: “It’s not about the money, it’s about sending a message.” Until Nintendo understands that message, I will continue to pirate and emulate their games ethically.
Amen brother. If Nintendo is not going to let me make purchases legally on my 3DS then why should I care if I pirate? If piracy of Nintendo ROMs skyrockets they have themselves to blame now. Message to you Nintendo, when piracy skyrockets you better not be whining or complaining.
I prefer the unSAFE_ MODE exploit since it doesn't require downloading the Pokemon Picross title. It wasn't recommended any more when I had to re-hack a 3ds recently, but it was still an option under Seedminer. Just to feed in to that little section of the video where you were talking about the hacking scene being around for a while and there being multiple different exploit methods available that don't require eshop access.
Literally modded my new 3ds for this. Not for pirating reasons but for game preservation and ease of play. I've tinkered with some injector programs on the computer and this is a really nice device to play all Nintendo handhelds on prior to the 3ds and even mega drive and game gear natively is Soo cool. I know my phone can do all this but it's just nice having a device that has all the buttons built in. I'll eventually do the same with a Vita when I get around to buying one again.
The rarest digital only title I have on mine is the Four Swords Anniversary Edition that came out when I got the Zelda Themed 3DS with Ocarina of Time 3D. If I remember correctly, this title was available for a few weeks back in 2011 or so, and then never available for download again. I will be following this once I bring my 3DS out of storage. I had already performed a NAND backup of my Wii with bootmii, which actually allowed me to restore my Wii when I moved the Wii items to my Wii U, so I can play my downloaded games on either console. My Wii's disc drive is starting to go, so my go to will be digital only with external storage, which would not be possible without homebrew and associated tools. Great video, especially talking about the topic of preservation and making sure you can enjoy titles far into the future.
Thank the gaming gods for the modding community! They're literally providing us the necessary tools to do our own personal game preservation, and I'm forever grateful to them all for that. These shop/server closure announcements don't even really phase me anymore as a result, when they would otherwise be quite upsetting. These companies want to just blatantly ignore game preservation? Then it's up to us to do it for ourselves. 👍👍
This still seems relatively advanced. We need a plug and play, drag and drop option similar to a DS multicart, or the “trueblue” hack sticks for the ps1 classic
I sold my last 3ds for my switch. Luckily I backed up my eShop games before I sold it. Really glad i did, because I didnt know I couldn't just sign back in and Nintendo support has been giving me trouble until this date. This is why I mod all my Nintendo systems and stick to physical games.
@@pearspeedruns I called and still kept having problems. Even then, this shouldn't be a problem. Every other company has had a better solution for almost decades at this point.
An atrocity Nintendo forces us into jailbreaking, a salvation to have the jailbreak available. Thanks to the complete hacking scene and MVG for the great video’s!
You can still use the unSafe_Mode method which you can select after selecting seedminer at the bottom. (unSAFE is safe it's just saved that way because it uses the Safe-mode and the universal otherapp)

Surely games that are not available through legal means should, by default, become public domain. This would encourage the console manufacturers that sell digital only content to continue supporting the console or risk losing control of the content.
I would just be careful when uploading ROMs to Google Drive. Google tends to somehow detect copyrighted contend and in some cases they can even terminate your account for this
I have all of my ROMs, including from several Nintendo consoles, saved on Google Drive. Nothing more recent than the GBA, though, and it's all in private folders, but I've still not had an issue with Google detecting copyrighted material and restricting my account in any way. Does this actually happen to people?
@Eric Norton it does, however it happens to people who actually make their folder public. It happened to the person who uploaded the V 1.0 of Legend of Zelda Ocarina of time (which thankfully is archived on the way back website)
This is just another plus to modding your 3DS. I already had mine modded to bypass region lock and to create my own digital backup of a few games to apply patches(translation patch for Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 3 as well as apply randomizer patches to A Link Between Worlds), and when nintendo announced their BS, I was just all "Oh good, I'm set to still be able to play stuff"
My question is, can you put homebrew and still play a library of purchased eshop games? And also play your original cartridges and not lose your save files? I'm considering it but I'm afraid to lose my purchases.
Whelp. Not surprising, but still sad. I wonder how long Nintendo will keep doing this until there's some actual backlash from outside our tiny corner of nerds who care about preservation.
I don't think there could ever be enough of a backlash to convince Nintendo to change its ways. While I'm sure many gamers are certainly upset at losing access to so many games in one fell swoop, I wonder just how many would be willing to go through the effort of modding their consoles, acquiring ROMs, and so on. Unless enough people (and it would have to be a tremendous amount) decide to vote with their wallets and simply stop purchasing anything from Nintendo, which is never going to happen, I doubt Nintendo feels any impetus whatsoever to change its business practices.
@@EricNorton627 I mean, you’re not wrong. And given they’re going for an entirely different market than Sony and MS, they’re targeting an audience that isn’t interested in most of their competitors and also likely doesn’t really care all that much, which I bet is part of what makes them able to treat their fans so badly with virtually no consequences.
@@jdatlas4668 You're right: for quite a while now Nintendo has targeted a different audience than Sony and Microsoft. I'm sure there's a lot of overlap, but it's certainly not everyone. I am very much within the targeted Nintendo audience and I have no interest in the other consoles. But to say we don't care all that much isn't necessarily correct. The most casual gamers might care but not be interested enough to do something about it, whereas others might not care at all. If I put myself to it, for example, I COULD mod the 2DS that's been sitting unused since I upgraded to a New 3DS XL some time ago; I've even been thinking about doing it, but, in the end, I haven't, simply because I can't be bothered to go through all that rigmarole… and for what? I already have all the 3DS content I'm looking for from the eShop (and, believe me, I've scoured it since the announcement was made and only found a couple of titles I still didn't have but was interested in that I ended up buying).
So question, if the Quake Remastered you worked on no longer becomes available for purchase anywhere, are you OK with people pirating the game? Now we know it won't happen to Quake, it will be available forever at least on PC, so just pretend. BTW, thank you for such a wonderful Quake remaster. I love how it looks so close to the days I played it on a Pentium and not overdone like some source ports. If I may, some light ray tracing effects with a darker environment might be cool as long as it doesn't look like Quake II RTX!
I've always been one to buy all my games for 32 year's but one thing i have learned the last year or more is that not all hackers/modders are bad and if anything they allow us to keep what's rightfully ours or to play old games that are to expensive which is why the past year since sony almost did the same i bought a 2nd console of all my consoles to softmod (hardmod in the case of xbox 360) to prepare for the gaming apacolypse 😑
Great video. I genuinely enjoy hearing your opinions. All of them seem well informed and organized. I really dig how you express your thoughts and information.
Great video! Considering Nintendo's trend, it's inevitable that the same will eventually happen to the Switch. How can gamers backup their favorite Switch games to "prepare for the future"? 🤔
As of now, sadly, there is no legitimate solution for digital downloads. Illegitimate solutions will undoubtedly be found and exploited. Yet Nintendo is content to allow content to simply disappear, while occasionally rereleasing a limited amount of older content on newer platforms at often exorbitant prices, and even THEN it's usually in digital format that suffers the same risks of eventually disappearing that they had to begin with.
The Switch CFW scene will have you covered, they effectively have all of these tools already. You can backup as you need; it's easy if you never want to play online again lol.
Thank you SO much for making this video! I had just finally modded my new 3DS XL a few weeks prior to Nintendo’s announcement. Once I heard, I began looking for exactly the info you cover in this video; how to preserve my games and what games should I be buying. Great timing! One question though, is there any reason it would be preferable to purchase a game through the E-Shop instead of…uhhhhh…”borrowing one from my good friend who happens to love dressing as a pirate (Weird, right? 😅)”? Could it be that the ones worth buying from the E-Shop are the games that don’t play as well when using your “friend’s” copy? Or does it just come down to personal preference?
If you get a copy from your friend, it'll be the same thing as getting it from the eshop. Only difference is you'll have given official support to the developers of said game if you bought it from the eshop. Though once the eshop closes down, you won't even be able to support them anyways. Any copy of the game is the same no matter where you get it from. Dumping games from your system is no different from getting the copies elsewhere. Once the eshop closes, you'll have no choice but to dress as a pirate yourself. But there will be nothing morally wrong about it since you couldn't support any developers anyways. It'll just be legally wrong, but nobody is going to go to your house and look at your 3DS. So get the game from your friend or not, it's your choice! Hope this helps.
For anyone that's new to modding, this is the perfect guide for you. I was told about this, there's also a guy who goes by sthetix that teaches you how to mod not only the 3DS handhelds, but many other gaming systems from the past as well as the recent console like the Nintendo Switch.
@@ShadowSneak. I didn't know that.. I just found out about this guy. That's pretty ironic of him to ban Nintendo Switch users when he still make videos on the system itself.
I’m not sure about some of the information at the beginning of this video. First of all, funds can be added to 3DS and Wii U via a linked Nintendo Account all the way until the closing date. This is clearly stated on the announcement that you showed. Second, have you tested that formatting a Wii prevents you from redownloading games? I was having issues getting my Wii downloads to Wii U, so I called Nintendo and they did it manually. All they needed were the serial numbers of each system; the original Wii never had to go online. This suggests to me that licenses on Nintendo’s end are tied to serial number and not an entitlement certificate. This also suggests that a broken Wii shouldn’t be an issue, because Nintendo can move the games to a different one if you call them. As for 3DS, another commenter already pointed out that Nintendo can link your Nintendo Network ID to a new system if your old one breaks; you just have to call them.
This highlights the stark difference between physical and digital copies of a game. Physical games can be sold, traded, whatever well into the future so long as the cartridge or disc continues to exist in usable condition. Digital games, however, are entirely at the mercy of the company hosting them. To be honest, I'm quite surprised that the Wii Shop still allows for redownloads, which makes one think that 3DS and Wii U redownloads will continue to be available for at least a few years after the eShops close for purchases.
The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Anniversary Edition will soon be lost forever officially once the eShop closes on 3DS 😢 They only ever released that twice for brief windows of time. Sure would have been nice if Nintendo released that again at least one more time…
Nintendo does seem to be a fan of artificial scarcity. In other words, if you don't happen to purchase this game at this one specific time (or, in some cases, even PLAY a game before it becomes unavailable), then you're just plumb out of luck.
The eShop closure won’t affect that game at all. It’s not currently for sale, only redownload, and after the closure it will still be available for redownload.
@@pearspeedruns And for all of us who were never able to buy it in the first place? Did you read the last part of what I wrote? I said it would have been nice as a final gesture at least for Nintendo to make the game available to buy one last time for everyone who previously missed it.
@@thanksbetotap Yeah I read your whole post. I was commenting on the first part, where you said the game will be lost forever officially when the shop closes.
@@pearspeedruns Uh, thanks? Nothing would have stopped Nintendo from rereleasing that game… I was holding out hope, but it now seems they really will never release it again. Depressing.
Correction: if you have linked your NNID to your Nintendo Account, any money you use to fill up your balance on Switch can also be used on the 3DS eShop until 2023.
Thank you for the video MVG! I bought a 3DS just because of this video. just finished soft modding it , now I’m about to enjoy the 3DS to its full potential!

in my opinion Nintendo should not be shutting down the eshop how are people gonna pay and download the games without the eshop nothing is really making any sense at all as to why Nintendo is shutting down the eshop
Hmm. 😐

Great vid!
Bro, reading this makes me go play some PC games. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
In case people are wondering, DLC can also be found online and installed by FBI. This is how I got the Mii Plaza extra mini games on my 2DS.

Yup, also updates and such. Just make sure you're downloading the updates for the correct region and you're good to go!
Idk how Nintendo hasn't been sued with how they're consistently closing off access to your digital games.
Very carefully worded EULAs that force you to write off all your consumer rights in order to use the hardware and software you paid for.
Sued for what? People aren't paying to *_own_* their games with digital purchases; they're paying to *_rent_* them.
It’s not illegal it’s just scummy Corpo shitnanigans
If anyone likes 2D action games, try Kokuga. It's a tank-based shooter that has stealth elements that don't suck. It vaguely reminds me of Soldiers of Fortune/Chaos Engine, but more futuristic and with better controls.
If these companies were smart about closing storefronts, they would have closeout sales to really up the income before they go offline, but I guess they're just too smart for that...
why would they need to lower prices? if people care so much about these games, they'll pay full price.
That sounds cool, Imma have to look into that.
@@clydefrosch I dunno maybe it might attract more people to buy more games
As an FYI for any UK/EU players, Kokuga was delisted from the eShop a couple of years back, so piracy is the only way of getting it.

They most likely still do. My 3DS got stolen in 2015, and I got a new one last year and I easily got all my stuff back.
They transferred my NNID from my old 3DS to my new one just a few months ago
Yeah, they still do that. Also for Wii downloads too, if you have the old system’s serial number.

We really need some way to compel companies to allow customers to back up these games legally.
This is legal.

what you saw in this video is legal
He means a official Nintendo Software that does this.
Nintendo gets money for the games, and then fucks off when they dont need you anymore.
ITS ALWAYS the community that has to pick up the pieces and create software and homebrew solutions/ hack solutions to make these backups even possible.
Just stop buying , they forget their fans are their life blood . .
I ended up doing this for the kids 3ds. The primarily goal was to back up their 3ds physical games so I wouldn't need to worry about them getting lost. 2ndary was to play some old DS games I haven't played in a long time.
This is the reason why we need physical media so that the manufacturer can’t pull the plug on online services.
Physical media isn't perfect either. People can and will raise prices to ridiculous amounts.
@@mrsuperheatran2794 That's why pirates solve that problem. If you're too poor to buy a game rather than give Nintendo no money AND not play the game, you can get it for free. So it's not a total loss.
@@mrsuperheatran2794 Not to mention, games nowadays are released half-finished, meaning lots of physical games would be broken without online patches that won't be available forever. Homebrew and emulation are the only available solutions, at the moment.

Started looking into homebrewing my 3ds because of the crazy prices of physical copies of games and the eshop closing. Going to probably do it, but it's crazy that we fans have to resort to hacking because Nintendo doesn't want us to freely access older games.
I've been trying to find 3DS games that haven't been backed up and shared on ROMs websites (there's a lot) to buy and upload them before they're lost forever. i hope everyone does the same.

You're an absolute legend as always MVG, hopefully the 3DS library will live on forever despite how much Nintendo wants it to die.
Unless there are contractual issues between the payment processor (credit card companies) and Nintendo, there is no clear reason why you should not be allowed to buy new titles until the complete shutdown of the server farm, including the file handling part:
But obviously the answer here is corporate greed, programmed obsolescence and artificial scarcity.
@@widardd "There might by dev time and cost attached to keeping the payment part secure and up to date. Since they don't update the 3DS anymore, it might not even be possible to secure a connection at some point, because feature X would need to be added or fixed."

There is another version of Seedminer called unSAFE mode. It’s where you boot into safe mode and hack it from there. That’s what I used to hack my 2ds xl a while back. So yeah, there is other methods for when the eshop closes
3:49 Fun fact about NTRboot.
This method will never cease to exist. It exploits a hardware problem that's present on all 2ds/3ds models, on which they read a small part of data from an NDS cartridge under certain conditions at boot.
Only way to patch it is to release a new hardware version, which is not going to happen by now.
Althoug a DS flashcard will cost you some money, it is in my opinion the best way to play DS games on the 3ds. Also, they're quite cheap. I got mine for 2$ brand new.

I don't think that your opening statement is correct. You can still add funds directly via credit/debit card using a computer to add them to your linked Nintendo account (the same as you do for Switch) after the cutoff. You don't need to rely on eshop cards at all. They are just removing the facility to add funds directly through the 3DS itself, the same as Sony did ages ago.
minor corrections/things you should've said list as I'm listening:
The difference is down to the TMD, ticket, and compressibility:
- Standard: This preserves the least (but you will still be able to enjoy the game just fine, don't worry), but is decrypted by default and thus compressible.
Stop this path of forgetting about the classics and preserve your legacy, the legacy people young and old can enjoy anytime of the year, with games new and old
I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again: “It’s not about the money, it’s about sending a message.”
Until Nintendo understands that message, I will continue to pirate and emulate their games ethically.

Super easy to follow. And thanks for the game suggestions! I picked up a few. =)
Surely games that are not available through legal means should, by default, become public domain. This would encourage the console manufacturers that sell digital only content to continue supporting the console or risk losing control of the content.
I would just be careful when uploading ROMs to Google Drive. Google tends to somehow detect copyrighted contend and in some cases they can even terminate your account for this
But if it's not shared, I don't understand why they would.... Like literally, just for me to access.
I'm hoping to get at least 4 3ds eShop titles before it closes forever. Pokemon Bank Poke Transporter VC Pokémon Yellow and VC Pokémon Crystal
Unlike Sony, the backlash doesn't faze them. They are entirely tone-deaf. I think they live in their own little bubble.
I mean, the BBC put it on their articles and the VGHF got on their asses, but do go on....
I am so grateful for people spending their time modding/CFW! They are like the saviors for us who cant do any of that 😭
Great video!
As Matt said, buying it officially supports the developers, pirating it doesn't. The code itself is identical.
For anyone that's new to modding, this is the perfect guide for you. I was told about this, there's also a guy who goes by sthetix that teaches you how to mod not only the 3DS handhelds, but many other gaming systems from the past as well as the recent console like the Nintendo Switch.
Sthetix has knowingly banned Nintendo Switch users with his guides (which was a pain to deal with in the Nintendo Homebrew server)
@@ShadowSneak. I didn't know that.. I just found out about this guy. That's pretty ironic of him to ban Nintendo Switch users when he still make videos on the system itself.
They say Piracy is no Party, but it's really the only way to have a party at this point.
Nintendo is Nintendo I was expecting this already I won't be surprised when Nintendo shuts down the online service (I also prefer bannerbomb3 method)
Correct, and you don’t even need a Switch to make a Nintendo Account; you can do it all on Nintendo’s website.
Thank you for the video MVG! I bought a 3DS just because of this video. just finished soft modding it , now I’m about to enjoy the 3DS to its full potential!
Having a New 3ds XL and standard New 3ds both modded, there are so easy to install games and emulators, great video.
