- This year at Wookies in the Woods we found something amazing! Innovative Motorsports swapped a 2.5T TFSI Engine from an RS3 into a MK7 Golf R! The Owner Kavin, shows us around the car and explains why he wanted to do this!

In Germany there is a company called "SAR Turbotechnik" that is specialized in doing this swap regularly.

From my understanding, VW wants to but it's an Audi motor and they ain't letting them
100% agree the R should have had that engine from the go
It would have eaten into RS3/TTRS sales significantly.
@@dantem306 solution is to detune the version they put in the R, keep the RS3 and TTRS higher in power #s. It could have also driven up price of the R which might be why it won't happen. Mid 40s is a lot of money for what at the end of the day is an economy hatchback.

They almost had a Golf R with this motor. Called the R400. Naturally, Audi denied it, so they instead put a larger turbo on the EA888 to make 400HP, but then dieselgate happened.

@@nerijusramonas7520 The "Mk7.5" means his car is the refreshed version of the 7th generation of Golfs. Production runs of Golfs are denoted by their generation. Also, his engine is a turbocharged two liter (Gen 3 EA888 - third generation of the EA888 AKA EA888.3).

Wicked build. The sound it makes is evocative of the original Quattro back in the Group B days. It's a great alternative given that they never sold the RS3 Avant in North America too.

My gateway mod is always and intake and a tune, once I get that I start spiraling deeper and deeper into the mods lol I haven’t gone as far as rebuilding motors yet
It makes sense to me since Audi USA decided not to sell the RS3 Hatchback here. It makes total sense, Awesome build.

@@djbryson May be an unpopular opinion but I'm not a fan of the sedan. It's something about it that doesn't look as proportionate as the hatchback looks. Maybe they designed it as a hatchback first and cut the hatch to make it a sedan. They should've given the option. All that performance for the sedan whereas VW on the other hand would never give us a Jetta R over the beloved Golf 😂

That was my thinking which is why I swapped an RS3 into my R. I have RSR #1 being built at Innovative. Just a killer platform if u wanna make big HP. I plan on making 1100 whp + and give them super cars hell...... lol
If you have to ask why? It's not worth explaining. For me & others it's a dream build.
I'm in love with this thing! One last touch that could make it perfect is if you could swap the blue needles for yellow ones on the dials

The E888 is a great motor, but like Kevin pointed out it has no soul. No glorious noises. I sold mine for that reason in the hopes of getting an 8Y RS3.
This was meant to be the family car and one thing led to another and now it has the engine from the Audi RS 3.

In my humble opinion the 5 Cylinder is "The Engine" VAG should have put in the MK7 / MK7.5 GOLF R from factory.
nope, VW has their own 2.5 turbo FSI engine. Its VR6 2.5litre (6 cylinder), but VW puts this engine only in VW Teramont and Talagon. It should have Arteon R too, but they discontinued that idea shortly before release
now this is exactly what i want to do!!!!!!!! if we just got the RS3 hatch this wouldnt be a big deal

I have an R.. a mk7 manual. I would absolutely love to swap the engine for a 2012 TTRS engine, the only 2.5T Audi provided in manual! 🙌🏼😫

So wonderful, that I modified the speech of JFK in Berlin in 1963 in my own words: "All free MK7 Golf R owner, wherever they may live, are lovers of the Volkswagen Golf, and, therefore, as a MK7 Golf 1.4 TSI owner, I take pride in the words: Ich bin ein Golf 7 1.4 TSI Besitzer! :-)

Added to the cost of the car you're looking $70k-$110k+ for what is a very fast Golf. That's insane imho.
I have RSR #1 being built there and yea its about $80k but I got CF, Magnesium wheels and stereo that adds another $40k lol. Should be finished sometime this summer. Gonna be wicked.
@@borderwave2 How did you count? if it's 30-80k and you get 110k, then the with 80k golf can only cost 30k. 30+30= 60k
This is the next best thing since we don’t get the hatch rs3! This is super dope, the Audi 5 cylinder is one of my favorite sounding cars! Plus they are super strong!

They made me nervous too dude 😂. They perform pretty well once they have some heat in them. Cold... Not so much. 😬
Ever since I got my gti I've been having my mind on a daza swap, and someone actually did it! albeit to a R. one day I'll have a daza swapped 2 door gti maybe even the first!

This is the engine the MK7(and 8) R should have come with, albeit detuned and less powerful then a RS3/TTRS for obvious reasons. You cannot change my mind.

This is how this car should come from factory. That 5 cylinder is perfect for Gold R.
Really good build aesthetically and power wise. Add in a MK7.5R Euro spec digital dash and it would be perfect.
What's the difference between the US 7.5R digital dash and euro spec one?
@@deezyb858 I'm not familiar with the US spec version as I live overseas. Could be the same if it is the virtual cockpit used in the Euro version.

nice hot air engine bay intake though, other than that, gotta say a lot of work and it does sound nice and clearly has a lot of power for this hatch.

This is so freakin awesome. Question is, can you do this with a manual trans? I know RS3s don't come manual.

The 8J TTRS came with the option of the MQ-500 gearbox. It would be doable with enough work and an earlier engine like the CEPA or CZGB. Not sure if it would work with the DAZA/DWNA engine like is in this Golf. Besides the DQ-500 is better at handling more power/torque with minimal fuss.

The 5 cyl in the jetta mk5 can hold more power because it is an iron block vs the aluminum block of the rs3's. You can pick it up for a lot less money and buy some garett precision turbos and intercooler and get even more performance and better sound
And people have been doing this for a while now. Buddy of mine first swapped a mk5 5 cylinder into his mk4 jetta gli. Now has one in his mk6 r. Iroz motorsports out in Las Vegas is the go to for 5 cylinder work. Hadnt heard of this company before until this video popped up.

might still convert a 7 to a 7.5. Compared to this engine swap this shouldn't be much work, just some body panels (front fenders, front bumper, rear bumper), headlights and tail lights. On the interior the infotainment can be swapped too, including the digital cockpit. Might be a bit more work with adaptive cruise control, of which the radar moved into the front VW badge.
i've done a few 1.8t swaps into older cars and thats pretty straight forward..... that cars loom swap is something else though

Okay this is nice. I tried to do a swap back in high school where I had to do the whole harness and it overwhelmed me so I gave up sold it all for 200$ lol
( 89 Honda EF Hatch if you are wondering. Previous owner completely botched the harness before I bought it and never told me. )
