  • Today’s Menu is 미역국!
In Korea, there is a TV program called 동상이몽(Same bed, different dreams).
    Have you heard of it?
Anyways, there was one scene that Chinese movie star Yu Xiaoguang(于晓光) ate seaweed soup.
He loved seaweed soup and he said it’s the best.
    OK let’s make Seaweed soup(미역국)!

Yum!!! Thanks for sharing the recipe. I haven't had this soup in years. My best friend just sent me a package of seaweed and I am looking forward to making your recipe. This takes me back to when I was a small child and we would go to skid row to eat Asian foods.

I love this soup. I have just recently made it and it was delicious. I don't use the slippery, slimy soft kind. I use the thicker seaweed that is often sold in pieces tied in knots, and dried. I soak it for a bit and rinse well. I am told it is the kind used more for stock. But, i chop it into squares and it does not lose its integrity and mush up. It is great because it is like a pasta and very filling and satisfying. I make the soup with beef like you did. If you don't like the slimy kind, try ZW dried seaweed.

I love Miyeokguk so much that it is the first Korean meal I've learned to cook completely on my own (I mean, I've made a bulgogi bibimbap but I used a pre-made sauce). I now consider Miyeok to be a soul food for me.
I'm really interested to try using the 3rd-rinse rice water!
I'm so scared I will soak too much seaweed that I still actually use a scale to measure my dried seaweed. I use 16g of dry seaweed; 8cups water; 500 - 800g meat; 3-4 coves of garlic; 1.5 tablespoons fish sauce; 1.5 tablespoons soy sauce. The amount of sesame sauce varies based on the meat I use (more oil if the meat is uncooked and doesn't have any fat on it, less oil if the meat is fatty).
I use any kind of meat available in the house. I've even used roasted pork (already cooked!); it tasted fine but the appearance of the soup was not as clear. My friend (an actual Korean) fries onion in with the meat instead of garlic and her Miyeok is wonderful too. It seems to be a very flexible recipe.
I think it's better to cut up the seaweed *after* washing it because it's easier to rinse and squeeze the water out while the pieces are long and can't easily escape from between my fingers

Miyuk guk, it's kind of hard to use too much seaweed since all it does is add more flavor. Good job with the cooking! :)

you know i love you guys. well today i wasn't feeling too hot and decided to make some seawweed soup. i didn't start with a recipe so i failed to soak my kelp that i bought in a big bag. but i had some mussels and pork and unseasoned pork broth. i had some garlic oil also. i found out my chihauhau likes cooked kelp but i don't because i chopped it up but it's tough still. so he gets snacks. the soup so good. i added cilantro, and some salsa verde, and put over mac and cheese..... i know i can't exactly call it birthday soup. but today's my daughters bday and she don't eat veggies, and she's hanging over from the weekend so i figured i got her covered even if she doesn't eat any, she's 300 miles away ty, god bless

I was starving lol. Today is my birthday. Thanks for sharing this yummy soup with me. I am sitting here eating it with you on your video. I have never had this, and I knew I would love it. Where's Claire? Is this video BC? Before Claire. I didn't eat it with my kimchi cuz I am not fond of sour kimchi and it's ready for pancakes.. I could put it into the soup but it's my first time and i want the full affect. Miyeokguk does pair well with and AMerican classic; Cheese covered Shrimp Scampi. Google it. Too bad I don't have a video of hubby making it for me. Thanks. You're my favorite. you and Claire. Have a blessed day.
