      earlier iterations of leela would simplify the position by throwing away most of its pawns leaving only a king and queen, because it already knows how to win with a king and queen. it doesn't need to optimise for positions with more pawns.

    • @Litwinel
      @Litwinel 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yes, exactly. Moreover, by setting up many different openings, including strange ones, they test how bad are some openings, and how Engines handle all sorts of different positions that arise from gambit lines etc.
      If both would play 100 games out of Ruy Lopez (for example) they could possibly end with 100 draws and we would learn nothing out of such duel.

  • @pullt

    I really enjoy seeing these engine games where they actually play out the lost games further than humans do.

    • @russianbotfarm3036
      @russianbotfarm3036 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I believe they were both tweaked to do so - otherwise they'd draw boringly often. It's a parameter, 'contempt', at least for stockfish. Like, how much respect do you have for the opponent? With high contempt, you'll play on, expecting that the opponent make dumb moves.

    • @pullt
      @pullt 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@russianbotfarm3036 I really like that addition. But then, it also makes me wonder why humans don't do the same, especially when the human opponent, even a GM is far more likely to make a mistake that takes a won position to a drawn one.
      I suppose it's pride....resigning is slightly better than being checkmated?

    • @russianbotfarm3036
      @russianbotfarm3036 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@pullt yeah, also, maybe - “I’m smart enough to see that I couldn’t win”. Edit: actually, I know that something like it was added to Leela, too - it would offer draws to opponents that its programmers knew were weaker.

    • @pullt
      @pullt 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@russianbotfarm3036 that's kinda funny. Of course, that also gives Leela (or the architects) a chance to downplay draws with "well, that was a pity draw" Then, if the opponent claims otherwise, just ask if they'd rather we tune her back to death mode.
      I really like the gamesmanship angles these computer matches provide since in top level human vs human competition, everyone has to act with utmost decorum and even unintended slights are seen as scandal.

    probably the reason why Leela swapped off the pieces rather than winning a piece is because it was the quickest way to force a winning position on the 6 piece Tablebase (one of the sanctioned ways of ending the game) You see this more clearly at the end of game 36 where Leela ends the game by putting her rook en pris. My favourite game so far was game 35. A classic sicilian dragon with all the classic features that any aficionado of the dragon would recognise but all put together in an amazing game

    Before the neural network engines the games without predefined openings would be the exact same every single time especially in the early years of engine games. It is finally feasible with NN engines to have no predefined openings perhaps.

    Hello Antonio! I have to thank you because a while ago I studied the opening Leela and Stockfish played in this game, and this is the first time I have seen it on this channel, which was very nice to watch! Another opening I hope to one day see is the Polugaevsky Variation of the Kan Sicilian, named after the Soviet player Lev Polugaevsky who first used it in the First Capablanca Memorial to win an entertaining game against Jose Luis Alvarez del Monte in 1962. I would be happy if you would check it out :) #suggestion

    How come you couldn’t grab the black pawn on a5 with the bishop at the beginning?

    • @vato20071
      @vato20071 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It will be attacked by pawn and you can't move it since it pinned. Hence you'll lose the bishop (or queen)

    • @yamikagevg7841
      @yamikagevg7841 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Then the bishop would have been pinned from the rook (since the queen is on A4)and then black can just push the B7 pawn to B6 so you loose the bishop

    They did all ready when it was AlphaZero Vs Stockfish 9.... it was the english opening for stockfish on every game and AlphaZero was countering it. In the end it was like 7 wins for Alpha Zero with no losses and 93 draws... So boring.
    The way they are doing it now is much more interesting as it shows, which openings are viable and which openings are busted.
    Plus it also gives each engine a chance to win or lose evenly on each kind of opening they are forced to play. Etc.

  • @boilingsky
    @boilingsky 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    If you let them play whatever they wanted, wouldn't they just do the same thing every time? You could play a max of two games.

    • @vapenord2588
      @vapenord2588 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not necessarily, there are quite a few opening moves that stock fish for example evaluates as equally good. Plus stock fish is programmed with a repertoire of openings classed as “book moves” because you can’t really class any first move as “the best”. A lot of games would be repetitive but there would be some variation.

    I'm not up on these engine matches. Are Leela and Stockfish learning as they play? If Leela played e6 in the previous game, does Stockfish take note and incorporate the move into his calculations for this game?
