    Next time you're going between north and south of Singapore, you should try the green corridor. It's an old rail line that had been converted to a shared cyclist/pedestrian path. A lot of it actually runs parallel to the route you rode in Singapore. It's gravel at the northern half, and pavement at the southern half. It's slower than the road, but it's a great opportunity to hit some dirt and get out of the sun and traffic for a bit.

    The most useful skill I learned that has saved my life so many times: learning how to lean into another moving object while you are in forward motion in same direction and then how to stay up upon separation. This will teach you how to protect your handlebars and your front wheel. It will also teach you to look where you want to go, your bike will go where your eyes focus on.

    I say the most essential bicycle handling skills start with actually scanning far ahead if you're riding solo or at the head of a group. Majority of road furniture and imperfections can be seen well in advance if one looks ahead and not stare at their stem for their power numbers. After that, I agree with Francis about ability to ride straight while looking backwards and to the same degree left and right. If you ride in city, you'd be scanning junctions for anyone who might just merge into your lane without any consideration (it's something I do while driving as well). Any one-handed riding skills for signalling and taking food and drink while riding is also important. If you want to improve handling, riding slowly on a straight line is also great for improving your balance and handling, especially going as slow as possible. Lastly, most people actually don't know how to brake in an emergency or what's their point of no return at regular speeds. These last two would definitely be a help with cars on the road and in close proximity.

    Rapha doesn't price on a cost-plus basis. They price on a 'it's way more expensive than anything else basis' - that's the entire point of their pricing strategy. They will price themselves out of exitance with more closures. Rapha just has closed its North American office, but the brand's CEO says the area remains its North American headquarters. Strange they opt to remain somewhat there since Bentonville is sometimes called a "Mecca" or "Disneyland" for mountain bike riders.

The two guys are great, but she's the glue, and you can tell she does her homework, as she's always got something to say that adds substance. Keep up the great work and thanks for the entertainment.
    To Jimmy's point about the Varia Radar, they're fine but while you may know there's a car behind you, you don't know if it's passing you safely or about to hit you. A simple mirror on your glasses will tell you both. Buy one, use it, ride safely.

    • @out_spocken
      @out_spocken 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Agree on the people vibes. Not sure about the Radar. I think it's a good gimmick. For the price it is I'd rather do head checks.
      You can also leach off another persons Radar in a group ride (so long as you stay riding close to them to tell how far the car is back). though any time I've done this it completely wipes out my heart rate data. And as much as being alive and having a heart rate is more important than tracking it, I'd rather have the data and do head checks. Because as you say...it doesn't really say if the car is giving you lots of space or not so a head check is needed for anything beyond sticking to the same line you are on...which you should be doing whether there is a car there or not really.

    A good safety technique to practice is Counter Steering. In the U.S. cars coming from the opposite direction will not notice the bicycle (or motorcycle) and turn left right in front of the bike. If you counter steer by throwing your bike to the left you will automatically turn right very quickly and usually avoid being hit by a few thousand pounds of steel.

    • @SeaBike007
      @SeaBike007 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I believe that might be more called an emergency turn. Counter-steering is a bit more generic, it doesn't have to be as dramatic. Counter-steering actually happens on any/every turn on a bike! It's hard to notice, but it's part of learning to ride a bike, eg: before turning left, you have to counter-steer slightly a bit to the right first. The emergency turn has a very exaggerated counter-steer, basically as big and as fast of a counter-steer that can be managed to get that turn as tight and as fast as possible.
      Though, the emergency turn really is a good one! I vividly recall coming down a hill and someone who lived at the bottom of the hill pulled out of their driveway without looking. I did a pretty tight emergency turn and rode up into their driveway rather than into the trunk of the car that was now newly in front of me.

    I've convinced two friends to use mirrors. It takes skill to use them, but you won't regret it. Mine is on my helmet, one friend's mirror is on his glasses, and another put two mirrors, one on each end of his handlebar. It doesn't matter where it is, as long as you have one or two.
    Even though I have a mirror, I turn my head back to let drivers behind me know that I know they're there.
    Rather than using hand signals, I usually use head signals. This takes a lot of practice, as it involves looking at the driver behind me and moving in front of him. The looking back signals that I am making a deliberate move and that I'm conscious of the driver or cyclist behind me. I was once told that I'm unusually easy to read, and that is my goal.

    When it comes to bike skills, track stands are *so* useful if you ride clipless. Getting going again from a standing start is often a bit slow, but especially if you don't quite get clipped in. What you may then find is that you get some aggresive yob right behind you beeping and trying to intimidate you. Especially bad is if you're on multiple lane roundabout and going straight over or turning right, meaning you're not in the outside lane as this means you then get undertaken too and now you have no escape route. If you can manage a good trackstand, then you can wait at the lights and be ready when they turn green, and in most if not all cases, accelerate away from the line much faster than Mr "My knob is huge, you can tell by the excessively loud exhaust and the way I attempt to seriously injure cyclists with my driving".
    Otherwise, cycling defensively, while perhaps not a 'skill' but rather a technique is so valuable. Learning how to occupy space and keep it is what often keeps you safe. It's not a good idea to antagonize drivers of course, as much as it's our road as wella s theirs, they've got the means to kill you if they act wrongly enough. However, many times I've cycled with someone who doesn't know and told them how they can avoid all those dangerous overtakes if they ride 'high in the road' and simply prevent the car getting through. On a similar note, as Jimmy says, signaling is a great thing to do - but signal more! Nothing is stopping you from giving drivers a thumbs up for letting you out - even if it was your right of way, say thanks for not being a muppet! Point at the road to your left or right to let drivers know you're going to swerve/move to avoid an obstacle soon, give an early signal to let drivers know you're yielding right of way for them, etc. Communication is key!

    • @out_spocken
      @out_spocken 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Communication is key. So many incidents and crashes wouldn't happen if drivers indicated what they were going to do (ie how little time they are giving anyone else to react to their lack of safe and required driving). Defensive cycling is all well and good...but you can't defend yourself against everything always or you really wouldn't be cycling very fast. I've been hit by 3 cars that have suddenly decided to pull in front of me. No indication. No reason to do it. They just did. I'm not going to slow down to 20kmh at every intersection a car is waiting to turn at, or every car that overtakes me. I may as well drive if I have to be that defensive. And ultimately that's what it really takes because it's wrong place wrong time for a lot of them.

      I initially thought to myself that i'd hold off on switching to cleats until i learnt trackstanding, but i never learnt it. And now i'm on cleats, falling less and getting off more preparedly, fumbling clip-ins at (fewer) times, but still ruing that i don't have this tool. just....how does it.
      There's probably a hierarchy of skills for cyclists to master that might be helpful to rank, but i'd think trackstands are several steps above bunny-hops, one-handing, no-handing while adjusting something, or filtering through traffic.

    Just a fact check on the difference in pricing for hydro vs hydro calipers... the price jump from a decent mechanical grouppo to a fully hydro grouppo is near the price of the HY/RD's / Juin-Tech's all the time. The hybrids need to be cheaper to see more adoption. I suspect that brands like Decathlon get these a LOT cheaper than us end users do.

    Interesting point is that mechanics are not allowed to work on a riders bike while in the car, so they can pass tools to the rider or work on the bike when it's not moving, but they cannot lean out of the window to fix a seatpost, rear mech or handlebars. This has come in in the last couple of seasons.
