  • Convoy has released two new titanium S2+ hosts! I have one in polished titanium and it's my favorite S2+ out of my collection. I got mine with the SFT40. The machining and weight are perfect, and it has a more premium feel in my opinion. Watch this video to find out more. Direct links to Convoy Official Store (these are non-affiliate links):

    Convoy S2+ Titanium: Video Transcript
    General thoughts after a week of usage/size comparison/practicality/interesting things:
    • This is hands down my favorite S2+ host! The S2+ in general is a great quality host on a budget, but the polished titanium just looks and feels a step above and more premium. Titanium is more robust than steel and slightly heavier than aluminum. The light feels really robust and refuses to scratch up. The SFT40 is my choice of emitter for maximum throw/output. Though the 519a offers superior color accuracy and tint options.
    • Convoy also does a stonewashed version of this light
    • Comparison with other S2+ models
    Overall Construction, LED, lens, bezel, and reflector
    • Beautifully machined. Silvery Gray colored. The bare metal feels premium, and more refined than the usual anodized aluminum. So you won't get chips and areas of the metal showing. The body will age nicely and scratches and knocks won't be much of an issue due to the density and hardness of the titanium alloy. The checkered knurling and cutouts of the head are simple and elegant. It's very grippy. Snapped on a stainless steel clip - no scratches. The ring cutout is too thin for a normal clip. I just clipped it on anyway.
    • SFT40 with SMO reflector, can unscrew the head to access the pill. Simple bezel, that cannot be unscrewed.
    UI - modes
    • 12 mode grouping - tap the button 20 times when on. Tap once to enter the mode selection on the first flash. On the second double flash, click to activate/deactivate memory mode.
    • Groupings are useful for selecting a mode that is useful for you. E.g. 100% for a cheap one-mode tactical light.
    Performance - total output, beam profile, longevity, practicality
    • Ceiling bounce, CRI, CCT
    • Beam description
    Considerations
    • Less heat dissipation. The copper pill helps.
    • The head of the light gets very hot on high modes - the body is fine.
    • Threads don't feel smooth, probably need more lube. But no need to worry about stripping threads - extremely durable.
    • No onboard charging. You can buy one with and without the 18650 battery included.
    Verdict
    • This is one heck of a deal for a titanium flashlight, especially a reliable and high-quality one. If you're on the fence, don't be, it's my favorite S2+ in my collection and you have to see it in person!

    Two types of Ti. Shiny, and grey. I tend to prefer grey as I have stainless steel lights. All of them shiny. So, the couple of Ti lights I do have are grey. Which is why I prefer my Ti Convoy T3 instead. But I do love my O.D. green aluminum Convoy S2+.

      I got the T3 in shiny titanium, but now kinda wishing I got the stonewash version. Just wanted something different. But I have the reylight pineapple mini, with the same stonewash finish.

    Very good review Darren...might get myself one of these. I really like Convoy torches and find myself buying more and more of these lights. My personal favourite though is my Wurkkos FC12 because of it's tactical mode and it goes everywhere me.

      FC12 is one of my favs too. I'd suggest the S6 or S8 as it has some serious throw, better than the FC12 with the PM1 in it.

    I'm very curious about heat transfer, how different from copper and aluminium. The titanium is maybe the worst heat conductor among metals, isn't there a danger to cook the driver in titanium house? If you have some of these laser thermometers, could you measure the surface temperature of these three versions, please? :)

      Yeah, I think the SFT40 is pushing this host to the limit 😂 I have a IR thermometer but for some reason it will not give me an accurate reading for this light. All I know is that it is searingly hot if left on turbo! I'll try again with another thermometer if I can get my hands on one soon. Good thing is that if you fry the LED, it's cheap to replace. Think it manages fine though, especially as it ramps down fast.

      @@DarrenYeoYT Hm, I'm no electrician, I have no tools (those tin welders), so I only can change the pill, if actually Simon would sell complete S2 pill-driver assemblies. I have two copper - older smooth with Cree XML2 T6-3B LED with 6x7135 driver chips, and a new checkered one with Nichia 519A. I think this Nichia 519A just a perfect LED, as the S2 has too small reflector be a real effective thrower. "Big heads", like C8, M1, and these 21700 cousins would be better for the thrower task. Although if you need a real pocket-able thrower and you can make compromises, S2 could be fine.

    Awesome review. Nice looking flashlight mate. Thinking of getting the same light but with Nichia 519a 5700k led. Any idea if the 519a emitter would get hot on turbo like the sft40?

    • @DarrenYeoYT
      @DarrenYeoYT  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi mate, yeah I have an S2+ with the 519A and it does get toasty on turbo as well. The trick is look at how many amps the driver is pulling. Normally those SFT40 emitters are driven at 6A and above. Lots of heat.

    • @hoggy73
      @hoggy73 ปีที่แล้ว

      So it's safe to say which ever emitter I choose would be quite similar when it comes to heat😂. Which would you recommend for better run time on mid or high mode usage. It's pretty hot from where i am living(Brunei).

    How's the machining? I saw a complaint about it being a little rough picking up lint and sharp edges.

      No issues for me, maybe the knurling is not as smooth.

    • @Fluvance
      @Fluvance 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Mine feels great on the knurling, however the threads are terrible. Considering that this light does not have a built in USB charger, and it needs to be opened every time you charge the battery, it is a terrible experience. The metal is very rough and grinds in a very nasty way.

    Nice review. Do you have stonewash version?

      Hi, I only have the smooth polished version.

    Great review! How does it compare to the aluminum ceiling bounce test? And how does the s2+ in sft40 compares to a 519a in terms of ceiling test and throw. Maybe create a spreadsheet with all the data 😋. Thanks for the review.

      Hi Mario, my aluminium version has the Nichia 519A which produces significantly less light. But it takes longer to step down. Thank you mate, I have a spreadsheet here with all the measurements from my Opple Light Master Pro: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1mn_BWefkRADYPtBu_IFHNA__R4ju4bedOUXzQ9ZOaR8/edit?usp=drivesdk
