  • My 3 youngest lads and I set out for a stroll alongside the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal. We were dropped off near "The Anchor" pub, just to the south of and on the opposite side of the A449 to Coven. The pub backs onto the canal and is a good starting point. We then followed the canal as it wandered north (and it really does wander - it is something like 2 1/2 times longer than going by road or rail), finally arriving at the Gailey Marina and Watling Street (which largely follows the route of the Roman Road from Kent to Wroxeter).
It's an easy walk, though the amount of overgrowing vegetation is an issue in t-shorts and shorts! One of my lads and I tried to cycle it during lockdown - but neither of our bikes were up to or prepped for the terrain. Easy walking, harder cycling.
Other than the factory units and the chemical plant at Four Ashes it's a great walk.
For the record, my oldest lad (who didn't come as he was doing his good samaritan bit and waiting for a package for me which arrived much later in the evening) finds my doing this funny. And he's probably right. THis is done as much for my pleasure and memory as anything. But if you enjoy it, all to the good.
