Two Guy's sitting in a kayak were chilly, so they lit a fire in the craft. Unsurprisingly it sank, proving once again that you can't have your kayak and heat it too. Another great video David.
I love the record of your assault causing ABH (Actual Boat Hit). Most of us hide our awkward moments so big respect for letting us see it. If I’m completely honest i’d have laughed if I was in the other boat, happy it wasn’t me whilst being acutely aware that it’s never a case of if but when. Can I also just say I get so much pleasure from watching your VLOGs, so a heartfelt thanks. To be able to make moving along a 18’ waterway at 3 mph funny, interesting and addictive shows you have a real gift. You’re a hugely talented film-maker and presenter and thoroughly nice chap. I look forward to following your professional success over the coming years. Take care bud and I hope the storms aren’t rattling you around too much.
I'm getting addicted to these Vlogs, and I previously had absolutely no interest in boating or canal. Credit to the presenters polished, professional yet friendly style.
I’m a big car enthusiast who watches almost exclusively car & engineering related videos. I’m not sure why your videos have been recommended, maybe because I live in the midlands but I’m glad I’ve come across your gem of a channel. i'm a volunteer lock keeper and during my training i was told that we are there to assist and not replace - however, when I see a 'single-hander' I usually ask them to stay on-board in order that they can maintain control of their boat whilst in the lock
HH, ref you standing by if asked and given your remit, are there times when a boater has made an absolute cock up and damage to the lock and gates is almost inevitable? Or, if a holiday boater, say, is ill advised (by themselves) to get their nippers/parents to attempt to wind paddles or push gates far too heavy for safety? What is the situation then? Do you exercise "executive authority" and halt the proceedings until an "understanding" is reached or do you watch like a hawk and pray that people, boat and lock survive the experience?
You make watching and listening to your play -by-play commentary is so delightful ! It helps in having a journalistic background. Rarely a dull moment .
The odd contact with another boat happens occasionally, it just dents your pride a bit, particularly after you have been cruising for a few years and reach a point where you are uber confident you know how to handle your boat. Great video as always, enjoyed the poetic description of the rain too..
Honestly my friend, your videos are such a pleasure to watch. I look forward to everyone. Your a natural at narrating and teaching. You have a very soothing voice, not monotone at all, just very pleasant. Your also an excellent boot crasher, I know that's not a word but it's fun. I'm a patron of Anna and Kath also, aren't they terrific.
Hi David, canoes are open-topped with gunnels usually worked by two people while kayaks are closed from front to back with a tied arrangement around the waist of the operator to keep the interior of the kayak dry. Here's a bit of Canadiana for you: an Eskimo roll is a trick that accomplished kayakers can do that involves rolling the kayak over one side by adroitly using the paddle and then continuing with the kayaker transiting from one side to the other under water and coming up on the other side; a 360 degree rotation above and below the surface like barrel-rolling an aircraft. Look one up, it's quite fascinating to watch. Cheers from Ontario.
To complicate matters a bit more...(old timer canoeist here)...canoes can also be decked over like a kayak. Look at the paddles - a canoe paddle has a T-grip and one blade, a kayak has 2 blades. A canoeist in a decked C-1 kneels on a small pedestal with heels touching heiny, a kayaker sits with legs in front. An accomplished C-1 boater can also roll up after flipping. It’s rare & takes a lot more muscle, but even an open canoe can be rolled up!
After watching your videos this is quickly becoming the very top of my bucket list. Thanks for all your dedication in providing an easy to watch video👍👍Kingy from down under
So glad you liked your enamel pin badge and thank you for being such a lovely friend. I guess I feel slightly bad for being so mean to you on twitter now... I'll get over it.
I love your narrow boat episodes and SO appreciate them. I visited Annamarie’s website. Her artwork is truly delightful - reminded me of Beatrix Potter’s illustrations, but clearly her own giftedness and style.Your camera work and narration are SO, SO good, a pleasing combination of fact and literature. It’s like being there. Not editing out the bump was a good move. It would be perhaps a bit like not trying to cover up a pimple. Embarrassing, but common to us all. In one thing or another, on one level or another, we all can relate.
I suspect those canoeists had been warned by the boat you 'kissed', that you were on your way..... Another excellent vlog. I really do appreciate not having music with the vlog. I also appreciate your sense of humour, nice to be able have a chuckle as we watch. Excellent scenery and.... I also liked the look of that NB...very nice indeed. Thank you.
I'm very sorry for your embarrassment, but I did happen to find this video extremely calming and satisfying, especially with the tree scenery. Thank you for it.
Always a positive vlog. The world of narrow boats is special. A beautiful setting. It can happen that you touch each other, the great thing is that there is no fight.
Lovely vlog David, your honesty is the key to your success as we know we are going to see the reality of narrow boating not the sugar coated version you see on films.
I just want to take the time to thank you for the show. This has touched my life in so many ways. This is extremely entertaining. I so hope the BBC picks this up.
They won't but I am pleased to say my friend Robbie Cumming (who has his own TH-cam narrowboat channel) has now been picked up for a BBC series, coming soon.
Oh dear! Oh well, silt happens. 😎 love watching your travels and I'm learning more about the whole narrowboating world too. Thanks and looking forward to the next one.
I really like seeing drone footage of the various marinas. They are all so different and yet similar. There’s just something about seeing many many boats all snuggled up together in the same place. The pleasing geometry of it all. I imagine that there must be way more boats on the canals today, than there was back in they peak working days. Maybe I’m wrong, the statistics would be interesting - that’s if they exist that is. Another great video, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and adventures. Much appreciated. 🙂🙂🌈❤️
Canoes tend to be open top. The rowers kneel inside the canoe, or sit inside if there are small benches, which there often are, and propel themselves forward using - crucially - a single-bladed paddle. In contrast, kayaks are closed-deck, with a hole in the middle for the pilot to climb into and sit in
Finally, a new vlog!! After another meaningless day of work nothing gives me more pleasure than to watch you navigate your boat across the English countryside. Keep up the good work David! Your fans are counting on you!!
Do the bump! Don't worry about little things like that.Nice little trip for us-thanks.The wash from the other boat's engine must have helped turn your boat into his.
Crikey CC, hardly a bump to worry about. The skipper hardly noticed ... in fact that "nudge" more than likely got him off the silt anyway. A masterful display of the manipulation of kinetic energy if I ever I saw one. Kings Orchard Marina; certainly agree with you there. Left just this morning after doing the laundry and diesling up. Drone footage; getting an aerial view to set the scene deffo adds to the narrative sort of thing. Well done you.
It’s good to know that someone that’s as experienced as you can still have a minor mishap here and there. We’re only human after all. Enjoy your autumn cruise.
A Kayak is what most people wrongly think of as a canoe. It's the one that is a complete shell top and bottom with a hole in the top that you sit in, with only your stomach up showing. Usually used with the classic double ended paddle held across the Kayak and alternately dipped in each side to move forward. A canoe (think canadien, Davy crocket and racoon tailed hats), is completely open topped, usually with bench seats across that you sit and paddle from or kneel on the floor and paddle from, with a short single ended paddle ghat you hand from side to side, dipping it in, to keep straight.
Slight complication is that in Europe and certainly in the UK, canoe has historically been a term applied to both types of boat, with 'canadian' canoes alternately referred to as open canoes. The umbrella organisation for all 'canoe' national bodies is called the 'International Canoe Federation', so the clue is in the name! Contraversially they have also taken on Paddleboarding (SUP) recently, but that may be about Olympic certification/funding. 40 years ago I was 'canoeing' in a closed canoe and no-one ever called it kayaking. Nowadays that green boat on top of the narrowboat is always referred to as a kayak! It's no wonder people get confused.
ahh what a lovely vid! no i wont joke about the thud (im tempted tho lol) those long straight avenues are really relaxing... zzzz ta for an ace vid! cant wait for the next one... neither can my fellow cutters! 😊
I remember being so proud of my boat handling skills; I had borrowed my Dad's boat, a 36' cruiser with twin screws, and had, I thought, mastered the various techniques of handling the boat- you know, crabbing almost sideways with the use of the twin throttles, and so on, making use of what could be a very strong current on the rivers of California's Delta. I remember the absolute horror I felt when I managed to push the port throttle forward, instead of reverse- and managed to swing the bow of the boat in to slam against the side of a much larger motor yacht. Good thing the crew aboard the other yacht was notably more professional than I was- they'd seen the accident unfolding, and had hustled to get several fenders into place. As it was, I got a very strong lecture on the proper methods of boat handling from the other vessel's captain. I remember wanting to crawl under a rock, I was so embarrassed. In the end, though, I learned a valuable lesson, and got quite a lot of knowledge imparted to me by a true professional; all in all, the accident was quite beneficial. When I told my Dad the whole story, he just had a hearty laugh... and told me that, once upon a time, he'd had a similar lecture from someone else.
6:55 I'm not 100% convinced that the guy in front of you here knew how to handle a boat either. When stuck on a mud bank, throttling forwards just pulls the boat down further, as it evacuates the water under the boat and throws it out the back. The way to easily get off a mudd bank is mid-throttle reverse, so the prop pulls water under the boat and raised it just a little. It should slide off then... or you can reverse into the middle of the canal and then go forwards. [ I'm quite sure I posted something similar on one of your other vlogs ] Yes, I've done the "diagonally stuck" manoeuvre a few times. We had a wide-beam boat on the Leeds & Liverpool a few years ago. That thing did not want to go in a straight line. As soon as the front or rear got to a shallow section, it would get pulled in (Thanks to Mr. Bernoulli, no doubt) and the other end would go the other side (pivoting around C of G). I guess in your situation, throttling forwards bringing the rear to the right *may* have stopped the front colliding. Oh well.
Hi David nice vlog the little bump you had was a little tap and slide 😀 as for the daises they are dandelions as daises are white dandelions are yellow but still bot weeds 😀 at 12 -34 is that was a very nice stretch of canal have nice time 😀😀👍👍
And there I thought I was the only one to do that and feel like you. At least he didn't scream and shout as once happened to me. Thanks for you honest vlog.
Banging into other boats does happen, not just with narrowboats. In '88 or '89 we were motoring our ~30' sailboat into a large commercial lock when we had a clutch failure, with the engine stuck in forward. My dad didn't immediately grasp the problem and tried to reverse at full throttle... banging at full throttle into the lock wall, bouncing off it and straight into a commercial freighter, likewise at full speed, on the other side of the lock. No harm done to them or us, though we did hear a few choice curses from the captain of the commercial vessel. :) Don't feel bad. :)
Many thanks again for sharing this with us. You are talking about Autumn! We are in the middle of what is supposed to be our wettest month of the year and the coldest with snow on the local mountains. Yesterday was 34*/36*c. And today is going to be 34*c. Last week we had days of 0*c at night up to 13*c in the day. This is the El Nino effect. This coming summer will be worse than last year. Also we have not had our full winter rain. So it goes. Kind regards and greetings from Africa.
Indians paddle canoes with a single blade either sitting or kneeling. Inuits as in Greenlanders paddle a Qajaq or Kayak with a double ended paddle i.e Greenland Stick. Really enjoy your videos by the way.
Considered emigrating!! still laughing over that....oh and as for the kayakers getting well out of the way, likely saw a tweet about some crazy guy coming up the canal running into anything and everything!! as we know social media may tend to expand proportion exponentially. Thanks for the laugh and as usual another beautiful piece of work!
Thanks David for another view of life on a narrow boat. Several viewers have commented about a bow thruster. I search the internet and find that they can be very helpful in the situation you faced, but have many problems of their own. Narrowboats don't have protruding keels, so a bow thruster must be installed through the entire hull. That makes them expensive as a retrofit. Also, canals are shallow and filled with mud and rotting vegetation, and in many places a ton of rubbish. Refuse can easily get sucked in and be a major pain in the arse to clear. I'm not surprised you have decided against one. Cruise on!
Amazing brakes on these canal boats, you speed into the locks, slam on the anchors , and stop inched from the lock gates,, incredible lol...Seriously,, I love the Vlogs, keep up the good work..
Got any questions? Please see my Frequently Asked Questions page first! www.cruisingthecut.co.uk/f-a-q/ The end of August meant the resumption of my travels on the canals so I set off again from where I left off in Vlog 184 - Fradley Junction - and went up the Trent and Mersey canal towards Handsacre, in the process managing to look like an utter incompetent as I bashed into another, stationary, boat at a lock queue. Woe is me :-( Buy your enamel pins from Anna & Kath at www.artbyannamarie.com Start location: goo.gl/maps/tVDGVxhh46Dsm1xq5 End location: goo.gl/maps/6RiwQKCA4EZnc3vBA
'considered emigrating', that made me laugh 😂 and, as a consequence, subscribe! I am accumulating narrrowboating knowledge via TH-cam, and CruisingTheCut is my go-to channel.
If you haven't done something embarrassing in a narrow boat then you haven't been trying hard enough. 60 foot of flat bottom and no keel and a cross wind will always be a challenge. It's what makes it also to rewarding like when you successfully ferry glide across the Severn river current to enter the canal at Worster! My best effort would have to be tying up the boat in Stourport Basin in October just a bit too far out. My wife falls in... she let's out a scream... I leap in fully clothed after abandoning our 3 year old on board! 2 very wet bedraggled parents after and a coal fire going full bore!
Howdy from Arizona USA. I just happened to come across your Vlog. I didn't know that this type of boating existed! Seems like a nice way to spend time; just floating down a canal. The scenery is so beautiful. I think I'll stay tuned and just drift with you for a while.
This is meant as a compliment. I enjoy your voiceover and it dawned on me why. Your commentary has at times, an Oliver Postgate quality which is both reassuring and comforting.
Accidents do happen. Still, no real damage done except to your pride David. Mr. Johns, you're still the best boatmen as far I'm concerned. what a lovely stretch after Woodend Lock. Still following you using online Canal Map UK. Great video. Thank you. I hope by the time next vlog starts, your pride is no longer dented
Eeek! That was quite a THUD into that other boat. Yes, the canal is most lovely. Appreciated the overhead view of the marina. It's hard to get a sense of their size/layout when seen from boat level. Enjoying the journey with you and look forward to the next installment.
We often complain about the TH-cam algorithm being weird, but sometimes weird means you get offered something new to enjoy that you never thought of searching before.
I see you're very close to 100k subscribers, I hope this random exposure will get you to it!
Greetings from the Netherlands.
I have no idea why TH-cam recommended I watch this video, but Im bloody glad they did! +1 subscriber
Welcome along :-)
me too,
I am enjoying watching these here in New Zealand
Same here!
Two Guy's sitting in a kayak were chilly, so they lit a fire in the craft. Unsurprisingly it sank, proving once again that you can't have your kayak and heat it too. Another great video David.
That is a most excruciating joke. I like it.
I have no idea why this poped up in my feed but I’m a subscriber
Welcome along
I've become addicted to this series, what a wonderful lifestyle
OMG an accident!! If only there were a news reporter nearby. 😀
Extreme Bumper Boats. Love it. The best recovery would have been to say "tie on and I'll help pull you off".
Thank you
I like your auto-critique, showing the real person you are, it fit so well with "raindrops keep falling on my head" and your storytelling 👍🇩🇰
I’m a big car enthusiast who watches almost exclusively car & engineering related videos. I’m not sure why your videos have been recommended, maybe because I live in the midlands but I’m glad I’ve come across your gem of a channel.
Your videos are so well put together and very satisfying on this miserable January night. Your commentary is very informative for a non-boater and makes it very interesting!
Thank you, pleased you enjoy them, cheers

I'm in the US, with the same sort of genre habits, and this appeared in my feed too. Not bad, though...
i'm a volunteer lock keeper and during my training i was told that we are there to assist and not replace - however, when I see a 'single-hander' I usually ask them to stay on-board in order that they can maintain control of their boat whilst in the lock
Your vlogs are much akin to reading a good book, thank you for taking the time to do them.
This is why I keep the jolly roger and an eyepatch handy at all times.
Never knew I was interested in boating until I watched this.

You make watching and listening to your play -by-play commentary is so delightful ! It helps in having a journalistic background. Rarely a dull moment .
David your one hero! Hitting these other bloody boats.
Very relaxing boating with you in the morning, I may be on my back porch sipping coffee watching on TH-cam but my heart is there cruising the cut.
The odd contact with another boat happens occasionally, it just dents your pride a bit, particularly after you have been cruising for a few years and reach a point where you are uber confident you know how to handle your boat. Great video as always, enjoyed the poetic description of the rain too..

Slightly bad? Perhaps you were just slightly mean.

Yes!
Oh dear! Oh well, silt happens. 😎 love watching your travels and I'm learning more about the whole narrowboating world too. Thanks and looking forward to the next one.
A canal guide . The speed of a wife's head appearing at the bow is directly proportional to the force of the bump. I'll give that strike 1 out of 5.

Don't feel bad. :)
Your voice over is perfect! I appreciate you! cheers from Canada!
Thank you!
Yeah! I would think living on one of those Boats... not being in a hurry has got to be a virtue for you that you must really embrace.
PLESURE TO WATCH YOUR BLOGS SO RELAXING, GREAT SCENERY, VERY WELL PRESENTED. THANK YOU FROM THE PHILIPPINES.
Indians paddle canoes with a single blade either sitting or kneeling. Inuits as in Greenlanders paddle a Qajaq or Kayak with a double ended paddle i.e Greenland Stick. Really enjoy your videos by the way.
james murray ... and it looked like he passed a blue canoe and a white kayak
Loving "Cruising the Cut" vlogs on Sunday mornings with a cuppa and muffin. Cheers 👍👍👍👍👍
Cruise on!
Considered immigrating...? Hysterical. We’ve all been there at some time in our lives. Another Great vlog. Love it!!
Your videos are just so peaceful thank you for sharing
Just subscribed to your brilliant channel. I’ve been watching many of your vlogs. Very well edited, great content and I love your humour 👍
Cheers!
Fantastic as always
Loved the video ill definitely watch more 👍
Amazing brakes on these canal boats, you speed into the locks, slam on the anchors , and stop inched from the lock gates,, incredible lol...Seriously,, I love the Vlogs, keep up the good work..
Speed is an overstatement lol

The end of August meant the resumption of my travels on the canals so I set off again from where I left off in Vlog 184 - Fradley Junction - and went up the Trent and Mersey canal towards Handsacre, in the process managing to look like an utter incompetent as I bashed into another, stationary, boat at a lock queue. Woe is me :-(

'considered emigrating', that made me laugh 😂 and, as a consequence, subscribe!
I am accumulating narrrowboating knowledge via TH-cam, and CruisingTheCut is my go-to channel.
Llyod's shall be notified young man, they will be notified! hehehehe good to see you back out and about brother, salutations from Mexico!
Yikes!!
Howdy from Arizona USA. I just happened to come across your Vlog. I didn't know that this type of boating existed! Seems like a nice way to spend time; just floating down a canal. The scenery is so beautiful. I think I'll stay tuned and just drift with you for a while.
I can almost see the want list for the next boat having a bow thruster being added to the must have section.
Never!
your titles always crack me up mate! Keep em coming 👍
there was alot less yelling than the car accidents i've been involved in, whether they were my fault or not. an no damage, to be seen, nice!
This is meant as a compliment. I enjoy your voiceover and it dawned on me why. Your commentary has at times, an Oliver Postgate quality which is both reassuring and comforting.
Thank you, that is indeed a compliment
I'm not surprised the canoeists got out of the way with your reputation spreading up river.
I started cringing before your bump. I used to boat with my Dad and experienced some little mishaps like this - not always our fault! 😁
This was recommended to me. Neat
I heard because of this show, Volvo is introducing a new narrowboat next year with crumple zones for safety.... And an airbag.
Sign me up!
James Davis You’ve just given David an idea for his next April Fools Day vlog
Eeek! That was quite a THUD into that other boat. Yes, the canal is most lovely. Appreciated the overhead view of the marina. It's hard to get a sense of their size/layout when seen from boat level. Enjoying the journey with you and look forward to the next installment.
OH DEAR ME! ...ERM...ummm. No wonder those inflatable kayaks were hugging the bank when you came along.
How incredibly kind of the volunteers! Glad to see you back with a new video!
Thanks; I haven't been away!!
Let's be honest. We didn't search for this.
But i did watch every second of it
Canal boats have become my latest TH-cam addiction!😉
I did 😳
Lovely stuff. Enjoyable whilst having a tea break from my decorating duties.
