THE DRAGSTER DOES (BABY) WHEELIES! | 50HP 670cc Drag Rail Kart

  • Our vintage Predator 670cc V twin drag rail has been down for over a month because of defective magnets in the billet aluminum flywheel, causing weak spark. Today, we install new magnets and test our new 780 torque converter weights. With the new weights, the dragster launches hard enough to do a small wheelie!

    These guys got me back into Mini Bikes, we have bought two of them, a Coleman and a Trailmaster. We are going to have lots of fun with them up on our Ranch. What is wonderful about Cars & Cameras is not just the informative videos but watching the genuine friendship between these two young men as they build various projects. It is also heartwarming to know that John's parents support their son's hobby. John's parents obviously love and spoil him, look what they let him to to the garage and property with his projects. The neighbors must be pretty understanding as well. This is a great American story about a wonderful friendship of two mechanically minded young men.

    I think fuel slosh may be a part of your problem. Since the carb is sideways like the whole engine, you nail it and all the fuel sloshes to the back of the bowl during acceleration. That may be enough to cause a lean running front cylinder or even a misfire. Whatever new carb you get, I would suggest taking it apart and seeing where the main jets get fed from and put that toward the rear of the rail so when you nail it, it’s always got fuel.

    removing that "barrier" will make it (essentially) a single-plane intake, so in theory it should also make torque at a higher rpm....but then that's why experimenting is so much fun...

    Sounds like the chain is skipping...you can hear it and see it at 13:22 .Looks like the shafts are deflecting also..

    • @msack6904
      @msack6904 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      harry guy I too noticed the movement/"slop" of the back wheels on takeoff. Wonder if its shafts or those wheels deflecting?

    • @jeffkohlmeyer643

    • @neilmac1123
      @neilmac1123 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I noticed that too on the last run, that rear shaft looked really sloppy.

    • @harryguy76
      @harryguy76 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes both the left and right side of the axle is bending toeing both the rear wheels forward 13:19 when he hits the throttle and it looks like the chain skip might be caused due to the axle flexing cause as the axle bends forward it takes tension off the drive chain just enough to skip by the looks of it.
      You can see the final drive chain to the axle get real loose on take off 13:34 ...you can see the left tire wobble back and forth when the chain skips 13:22 use the slow mo function and you can really see it good.
      Thicker axle might be in order...

    What I’m thinking is the g forces from the launch is pushing all the full to one side of the dual bowl and only feeding one pick up

    • @scottgrumpybastard311
      @scottgrumpybastard311 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      thats what I was thinking also since its not a high G application Engine to begin with , we have slosh control plates or stuffing in hard launching car carbs and jet extension tubes to prevent it from leaning out , also the cutting of the spacer will make the carb look bigger to the engine since its now pulling from both bores instead of one bore .

    • @brycewilke3906
      @brycewilke3906 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Scott Grumpybastard yeah this happens in real drag cars ( naturaly aspirated )at the track during launches but most all cars have a drop in oil pressure due to the oil being pulled away from the oil pickup so they need a sump system, but I thought this might apply here.

    How to check the stall speed on the converter- Remove the belt, use a fairly accurate tach. bring the engine speed up watching the tach- when the faces of the sheaves (the part that moves to contact the belt) closes up, that's your stall speed. On a Jr dragster, you set the idle speed to almost that point, so the car creeps into the staging beams, without touching the accelerator. The high idle helps the launch.

    With the wheel spin. I would recommend softening the tires. A good brand to use is HMS extreme. Don't take much to soften the tires. Just need to deflate the tires, take out valve stem core. Squirt in side tire and spin tire till assumed dry. Then to have a more effective soften also spray the tires on the outside. Wrap in paper towler and then spray paper towel. Then wrap tire in some sort of plastic wrap (bag,etc) an let sit till paper towel is dry.

    you guys are not using the stall correct. for example: if you guys have 3500 stall springs you need to bring the rpm's up to (around) 3350-3400 . right before it locks and then launch the rail. try it when you get it running right. I think you will be happy with it. also you need to find out what kind of rpm's your running at the drag strip. for example again: if your motor is good to 6000 rpm's ? then you need to make sure you have it gear to pull that kind of rpm's at the finish line.
    goodluck guys. you need to come to symco wis this august and drag race one of your minibikes on a clay track,125ft. 85 bikes, 5 classes last year.

    • @TwilightTheShooter
      @TwilightTheShooter 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I was thinking the same thing, but their torque converter is just a belt driven CVT, not a fluid torque converter with a stator like a car, it would probably help to run the engine up to stall before launch but they're gonna toast their belts real quick doing that

    • @roodgeregeld
      @roodgeregeld 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's a variomatic... Exactly The same as a jr dragster... Belt does not slip..

    • @468delray
      @468delray 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      they won't chew the belt up. it's made to handle that kind of power.

    • @TwilightTheShooter
      @TwilightTheShooter 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah it can handle the power, but it will just melt when if they stall it for too long, even if it doesn't melt it will get flat spots on the belt and it won't be nearly as effective after that

    • @468delray
      @468delray 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      have you every run a torque converter with a stall setup. it won't melt or flat spot. I run a salsbury 340 unit on a 15+hp minibike engine. setup for clay/dirt drags with 3400 stall springs with a 20 series comet belt...…. no problems.

    HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT DUEL CARBS??? It is a V-TWIN type of engine isn't it?? So i figured DOUBLE-DOUBLE,.. Basically same way the Yamaha Banshee 350Twin... Mine had duel carbs and she really screamed, eh!! depends on taste of builder i guess, some would put the single carb on them but bigger size(a lot bigger) i think i had duel 36mm on mine:factory was 28mm i think but i'm not 100% on that, been a long time ago...
    MY POINT being; wouldn't a double carb setup bring out or unleash THE BEAST?
    However i enjoyed the video clip.. KEEP'EM COMIN' ! ! !

      Wisconsin Robin = 2 Predators. A bit heavier, but amazingly compact small V-4 which would almost fit without mods [I said 'ALMOST' people...] and, although a bit heavier [cast iron block and heads] its one excellent block to power build!
      I found a few on E-bay, this one is moderately priced, great photos of how they are laid out, perfect for flat plate mounting, although you have a whole lot of sheet tin that you might want to negotiate with fiberglass to save a little weight, in the end, even though it is ONLY rated as 30hp with the dinky little 1bbl carb, with a few tweaks and a good set of motorcycle carbs it would probably turn out 120-150 Hp pretty easily.

      Delicious DeBlair. The Wisconsin Robin V4 is 1760 CC. Making its width at least equal to an 875 CC engine. Vs their 670 CC V twin mounted longitudinally. Which would be a least 350 CC width engine.

    • @roguetorino

    • @performancemudmotors

      Vz21 turbo would do it

    • @thomasstrickland0
      @thomasstrickland0 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Turbo would have too much lag on it. A belt drive centrifugal supercharger would work better. Basically a turbocharger with a belt drive system. Had one like that on my GTA.

    • @michaelrodgers6559
      @michaelrodgers6559 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thomas Strickland a single turbo would be mechanically simpler ...and if sized correctly the wouldnt be much lag at all especially with their stall setup. If they wanted to boost more volume at less pressure to make more power they could set up a nitrous system either in the induction system or in the exhaust as an anti lag wet shot

    • @CarsandCameras
      @CarsandCameras  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We would need either a draw-through setup (which has performed poorly for us in the past on the drift trike) or an expensive custom EFI system. On top of that, we'd need a custom ground cam with minimal overlap- forced induction gains are marginal without the proper cam.

    Two things I noticed. You might benefit from airing down your rear tires down to 10 or 8psi (better launch squat and grip patch gets larger.) Second your gas tank your using may not be venting enough to let all the fuel it needs to be sucked to the carbs without causing some vacuum lock in your gas tank. (Put a larger vent than just the cap on your gas tank. Either drill and tap the tank or add a bigger vent to the cap itself.)

    Since they don't answer messages on Facebook it's good to see they finally figured out there carburetion is way too small. It's misfiring because it's starving for air. I've worked with v twins since 1989 when the first Vanguard was made. They should be running a pair of 28 mm Mikunis. It seems like a lot but trust me it's what it needs.

      Ian s I was thinking the same, i think the 670 is limited by the CVT clutches. I think they maybe should have put the 670 in the margay chassis, and then put the Ducati Monster in the rail, first, it would get rid of all those kinda sketchy jack shafts they had to use to make it work and it would give it 5 gears to actually make it drag. But the ducati in the margay is pretty Absolute, just get another performance motorcycle engine for the rail.

      Yea I got a Braille.
      It’ll start my diesel car down to 30, it weighs 15 pounds and is half the width of a normal garden tractor battery.
      Not cheap at around 180 but I saved about 30 pounds off my front end in my car.
      That’s a big help when it’s only rated at 52hp.

  • @715101
    @715101 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    The mod you did to the carb is a great idea for a cammed engine, it does not need to be shaped to flow (it is better to set up as a H pipe like you did) the purpose is to equalise carb vacumm (enlarges your tuning window) and prevent reversion pressure from reaching the carb.....
    In the 45mm Weber and dellorto world it's known as a balance bar

  • @Crashwithabang

    "You need to look at your rear tires and axle"... the hub at 13:15 has a wiggle with next clip on left side also. Its not deflection, maybe it's from tooling around the yard with that frame. I liked when it jumped the tree roots. This thing sounds so cool. Just like the movie with Cheech and Chong...... he has the harley on porch just to bother neighbors when he hits the throttle . I'd do the same thing and stay stationary just flooring it, LOL

  • @Mr._Flunky
    @Mr._Flunky 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey guys, from my own hard experience I have an idea for that lean rich cutting out.
    If the dual-core carb runs front to back of your rail and the float bowl is one single open bowl, then you are starving the front cylinder and drowning the rear, during high G-force moments.
    Change the carburetor position to force feed the fuel or at least put a tiny baffle in the bowl to prevent fuel movement.
    Also note to your spark issues, straighten out the ground electrode, cut it down by 40% and round the end, rebend to be equal height with the center electrode to unshroud spark kernel. Try clocking plugs so ground electrode is between valves on each cyl.

    @carsandcameras you have the right idea on putting the gap in between the two barrels of the carb you gust did it in the wrong spot you should do it right behind the carb and the bigger the space the better. Engine masters actually tested that on the Dyno and made decent improvements I forget the episode number. Also by doing that you will effectively dubbe the size of the carb. From what I can tell you are spot on on it being like 2 separate carbs. Also on launch you should hold the break and gas so your rpms u faster on launch but you might break traction don’t know
