    I don't know how many times I've watched this. But I find it so relaxing to watch you build. I do the same thing, except my stoves involve more cardboard. Theres just something about building something from (almost) nothing.

    I realize this video was created 5 years ago, and your wood stove as well. I'd made a pot bellied stove for my first fairy house I'm working on. I guess it could also be called a tree house. I'm using 1/3 of a hollowed out log with an amazing and large teardrop shaped opening in it. The scar tissue surrounding it is fantastic. Other natural features as well, too many to go into here. For the upright pot belly stove I used the top half of a small POM (pomegranate juice) bottle but was getting nowhere. I saw this video and immediately went to work, at 11pm no less. Instead of your go-to layers I used a thick cardboard tube I had saved years ago (I think it had ribbon on it, yards and yards of it). It was perfect. This I covered w/2-3 layers of tissue paper on top of Mod Podge. I also happened to have a perfectly sized disc in a sturdy card stock so I went from there. I'm having trouble with the handle, could be my wire isn't quite thick enough. I may try something else, but I do love yours! I don't know about where you are in Canada but we always call these drum stoves, as they're made from 55 gallon drums. Or patterned after them. To us, a pot belly stove is a stand up thing, with a big round belly at the mid-section. Anyway, thanks for the amazing inspiration and tutorial!! I also just happened to have gold foil paper so I used it to line the firebox and the back panel. I also added it to the tea light, all for maximum warm glow reflection. I used two thin layers of a used sandwich bag for the window but even though it replicated real-life stove glass (cloudy, from use) I got tired of the look. I added flames to three small 'logs' using tissue paper, highlighted with a touch of paint (red, yellow, orange). OH!!! For feet: I dismantled two small binder clips, drilled a measured out hole for each and anchored inside with hot glue. Then I covered them with Mod Podge and black tissue paper. They look fabulous!!! Without this video I wasn't sure what type of stove I should try next. You took all the angst out of the planning!! (I'm the happiest with the feet!)

    How is it that you are so creative and talented and yet there are so few thumbs up and comments????

    "It's not a tutorial" : to be honest I find these types of 'tutorial' far more useful because we join you while you problem solve and that in itself gives us alternatives and skillsets we can use in other projects. It also shows us that even the experts have to work things out and get stuff wrong which is confidence building for us

      I do this sort of thing often, .. there's always a bit of hesitation at first but once I get a thought to do something new I can't get it out of my head. I'm a visual person not a planner so ideas most often come to me after something else has been built and put in place. But I wouldn't have thought of it at all if that particular space was empty.. lol it's just the way some brains work, I think!

    I wanted to tell you about a thought I had while watching this video. I was thinking about the family or whoever you put on your fourth floor, and how they would have to walk all of the way up there with more wood for Rusty. You also mentioned that you weren't sure what to do about the tree branch and hole that you built for that floor. What if you came up with some kind of pulley system attached to the tree limb, and a platform that could be loaded with wood and supplies, then raised or lowered to the fourth floor by pulling on a rope that was attached to the platform. I remember seeing a wooden tow truck that my father had built for one of his grandchildren. It had a hook on a rope that could be lowered to pick up a car by turning a handle by hand, and then raising the car up by turning the handle in reverse. I saw this tow truck about 30 years ago, so I don't clearly remember how everything was done, but you are so clever with your creations that I thought maybe you could think of a way to do it if you thought an idea like this was worth trying out. I just love watching your videos and seeing your creativity come to life. I am going to make my own tree house one of these days, but first, I have to make room for it in my small house.

    • @WhereTheGnomesLive
      @WhereTheGnomesLive  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ohhh yes, thank you! I actually have something along those lines in my brain. When I was little we had a barn and it had one of those pulley systems.. we would actually play a lot with it. My brothers and I would have picnics on the top floor and would use a bucket to pull up food and drinks and whatever else we were hauling up there, lol I remember that so well because it was so much fun! You had a great idea for sure.. and I'm so glad you are enjoying the videos, that makes me so happy :)

    I bought a whole wack of the ready made wall filler/putty/clay that you recommended early in your series and now I see you have moved to paper clay permanently. Does that mean I am going to have problems with the store bought variety that you were so enthusiastic about?

    • @WhereTheGnomesLive
      @WhereTheGnomesLive  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven't switched to anything permanently. I'm using both. The first 3 floors are still covered in drywall compound. I've never used filler or drywall compound to build miniatures with, I've only used it in this tree to cover walls that have been built with cardboard. I have never recommended filler or drywall compound for building anything other than to cover walls that have been built from cardboard. If a person doesn't want to use clay, the drywall compound is an option. I love the looks of the compound, I'll continue to use it on walls on the lower floors BUT with that said, I always say to use what is easiest for you, just because I'm doing something doesn't mean it's the best way, it's just personal preference. As I was working on the 4th floor (part 22) I built a wall above the stairs using foil. I then covered it with drywall compound, it cracked when I touched it, I pointed that out in the video. I did say that very early on in the series too, drywall compound cracks if bent. Since I had to make a batch of clay and cover that wall I decided to use it for the whole room.. I like the looks of it on this floor. But no, I haven't switched to any one thing permanently.. I'm enthusiastic for clay and compound. I love both :)

      nothing I do is really good though, lol if you look at it.. nothing has straight lines, everything is a bit wonky but I think there's something charming about that. I believe you'll do awesome, just build and enjoy it as you build. In the end you'll have something you made yourself and that's wonderful! Take your time, take breaks when you need them.. have fun :)

    How did you do the bricks?

    • @WhereTheGnomesLive
      @WhereTheGnomesLive  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can't remember what bricks are shown in this video but normally I cut pieces off of a paper cup tray and paint them. It takes time to cut them individually and glue them down so that process is better for smaller projects. For larger projects, Bentley House Minis here on youtube using one sheet of foam board. She has a video on it, looks really great in the end! th-cam.com/video/IU8EFuKFXks/w-d-xo.html

      regular masking tape. I get mine from Home Depot. Make sure your tinfoil doesn't say non-stick. I used that kind by mistake before and thought all my tape had something wrong with it.
