  • Typical start up procedure for most gas space heaters. The brand in the video is Empire and it has an ignition button. Some heaters won't have this button and you will need to light manually.

    I have the exact same heater, thank you for making this video as I didn't know how to light it. Only knew how to light the older ones you light with matches.

    Thanks! I was looking for a video with a gas heater that you can lite without using matches. Thats how I used to have to do it, but my landlord replaced that heater with this same exact one. I always forget how to do this, every single year 🤦‍♀️ just seeing you light the exact heater I have makes me feel better about doing it myself! Thanks!

      @@youtubingbabs it worked out perfectly. I had my mom get down and look in the front to make sure she could see the flame before I let go of the gas. It was lit and I just put to knob to the on position and it went right on! And it always smells weird the first time you turn it on for the season too. That always makes me nervous but it goes away! Good luck

    Thank you for the video many older apartments in New England still have these heaters. Any idea as to why it would go out after a few days of already being on ? Also took much longer than usual for pilot to light.

    I must have an older model of the same Empire. The igniter is incorporated into the gas off/pilot/on switch. I am on my second day of trying to get the pilot lit! It is up against a wall and very little room , it is my only heat and it s getting cold in Minnesota! Back to trying,thanks for posting good to see one pop off ! Must get my "feel" back for igniter.

    • @coutes12
      @coutes12  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sometimes they are hard to start but shouldn’t be two days hard! When you press the igniter, are you getting a spark (I know it’s not easy to see, maybe record with phone or have someone look)? Have to start breaking it down step by step to trouble shoot what’s wrong! Best of lucky, hopefully you get this up and running ASAP!

    • @coutes12

      I would call a repair technician (I’m not an expert on this part). I believe an issue like this could is a result of incomplete burning. Could be a regulator issue or orifice problem.

    I got a question for ya. I’ve lighted pilots for years. That being said we have the next model down from this one. When I light the pilot it stays on but I’m still smelling gas. I contacted the landlord and they sent their maintenance man out and he sprayed soapy water around the black steel pipe and said it’s not leaking. Now I went to school for plumbing and when I smell gas I know something isn’t right. I never really messed around repairing these ya know. Do you happen to know what could be leaking because I’m smelling gas so I know there is a leak somewhere but they are stubborn and insist it’s not leaking smh lol. I thought maybe you had a couple ideas I could check out. Thank you

    Hey, I just set up this model... the seems to be way to quiet or it’s not on. Do you know how to make sure the fan is on?

    • @coutes12
      @coutes12  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not all models come with a fan. I ended up installing one on this unit a couple weeks after posting this video. The way mine works is: once heat kicks on and runs for a bit, there’s a thermal switch that will turn on the blower. It takes like 10 min or so but you will definitely hear it. Then, when you turn the heat off, the fan continues to run for say 10 mins until temp drops. Hope this helps.

    I have an Empire heater at my summer home that my grandparents had put in 60 years ago ! It still works fine but uses a lot of propane … plus being 66 years old it’s not that easy to get down on the floor to light the standing pilot . I thought that the new heaters had igniter’s now … like on gas ranges

    You should not turn out the pilot light over the summer with heaters like this. The pilot light keeps the heat exchanger from rusting/rotting out from the humidity in summer. The tiny bit of money you may save tuning off the pilot over the summer is not more than the cost of replacing the heater prematurely or having the heat exchanger rust out and leak CO2.

    All these home videos of pilot relights do not cover any type of vent checks or flame characteristics. Both hand in hand for potential CO issues. That known silent killer usually around bedtime. Also no mentions of having CO detectors. Hey people out there, don’t be so stupid to think TH-cam channels are the end all.
