Thanks Im a woman almost 80 years old and I see this is not complicated. I have been able to fix most things from electical, sheet rock etc. I thought this was beyond my ability. But I see I can do itl Thanks so much!!!
Just take your time and pictures you can do this make sure you check for leaks. And turn off the gas before you start cleaning. Let me know how it goes.
I use my leaf blower to clean mine. I’m headed to 80 also. Leaf flowers are good for cleaning leaves vent free heaters. They’re also good for cleaning screens but they’re really bad for dusting furniture :-)
YOU JUST SAVED MY CHRISTMAS. I didn’t think I was able to do it myself, but with this handy video , I DID THAT SH*T!!! Thank you thank you thank you!!!!
7 years later Your video is still helping people! A few years back we had our contractor look at ours and he couldn't figure out why our heater kept shutting off. Finally, we resorted to just using a plug in electric heater... BUT then, on a whim, I watched your video, cleaned out our ODS and BAM it's running like a champ! Thank you , thank you , thank you!
I had a friend who replaced the milivolt valve, didn't fix it. I replaced the thermocoupler, didn't fix it. Finally came across your video and saw you take the pilot valve apart. I cleaned it and the ventless heater works just great now. Thank you!
Thanks for making this video, it has saved me sooooo much money. I was one of those guys that replaced two of those furnaces before I found your video. Not only was I able to save the two newer ones, but i was able to refurbish the two old ones. So now i have two spares just in case. Keep up the good work.
I didn't realize that pilot assembly came apart like that. Very helpful my friend, thank you. Another thing that could be done is to take that copper pilot feed off the gas valve and blow that out while it's all already taken apart.
Thank you for this! My husband is a dang fine handyman being a welder by trade. He said that he didn't realize how serviceable the heater was. Watched your video and now were heating once again!
You probably dont care at all but does anybody know a way to log back into an Instagram account..? I somehow forgot my login password. I would appreciate any help you can offer me.
@Noe Bryce thanks for your reply. I got to the site through google and im in the hacking process atm. Takes a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
I followed your instruction...but my issue after I light the pilot and attempt to turn the knob past the pilot to 1 or 2 my pilot light goes out. Can you tell me what's wrong?
Thx Kevin, my Mum needed her gas pilot light fixed and I didn't know what I was doing until I found your video explaining how the parts worked. Thumbs up !!! Cheers
We so appreciate this video. Our old heater wouldn't stay lit. We saved $150 by not buying a new heater and using this video to clean our old one. It looks new. Thank you so much!
Great video, Thank you. I got my vent free gas heater from a friend. He was going to throw it away. I took it to my cabin and cleaned it out a it works great
I have been working on this for a minute. Found your video and I had a small steel brush. I did what you said, and this thing works like new. My pilot light hasn't stayed on in a year. I just thought that was how it worked. Thank you again.
Thanks Kevin. I was contemplating throwing the one in our garage away but with your video started up like it was brand new. Thanks for taking the time to make this video.
Thank you for this step by step, being female it was never a job I thought I would have to do myself but life throws you curves and you must adjust.. Pilot light on my wall mounted propane heat went crazy and I didn't trust it so cut gas off to it last year but cold weather coming in again and wanted it...I got it done , not as smoothly as you did BUT done. Ready to use. So Thank You ...from Alabama ❤
Need you help again Please....have 2 Heaters.... 1 heater brick is changing to solid orange/red color..other heater has blue flames rolling over constantly with flames coming up over top of brick and only turns partially orange/red...what did I do wrong on this heater? How to fix it...
thanks for the video just took one of these heaters out of my attic. it belonged to my father who passed away 13 years ago. it doesn't want to light going to try this technique. even if this doesn't fix my issue your video is well done.
Kevin, you saved me about $200. Pilot would not stay lit and had jaundice. Took the pilot assembly apart just as you showed, cleaned and dried it with no residue brake fluid, dried it well and the pilot is so damn blue you can't hardly see it and it stays on like new. My wife was ready to make me order a new one. Thanks Buddy.
I'm so glad I found your video. You just saved me a bunch of money. My husband has always been the one to "clean" the pilot and it still kept going out. Today I took it apart and cleaned it. Lots of dust came out. Now we have a nice blue flame and the burner doesn't blow it out.
I found your video after I talked to my service guy. You are right! Dust. Only he showed me how to clean it with compressed air and not to disassemble it. Luckily this worked. Thanks for video!
Have 4 of these heaters that I have cleaned annually for many years. I learned from owners manual, it was long before Al Gore invented the internet! I always used a shop vac and never had to remove the vent tube but today that didn't work so your video was helpful. I also use steel wool to polish the tarnished thermocouple and also end of piolet tube and use tiny piece sand paper to clean tip of igniter. I take box assembly (with the glass), place in kitchen sink & hose it off with hot water spry, wipe it dry & clean glass. ALSO - If you have a lazy yellow tipped pilot flame it needs cleaning. Pilot flame should be a sharp blue flame. Yellow in flame creates odor as it's not burning properly due to incorrect air/fuel mixture. Great Video...thanks 👍
Thank you so much for doing this video! I will now attempt it myself armed with this knowledge. You have a very pleasant voice and an encouraging instructional manner, plus thorough content. You are a great teacher! Keep up the good work!
This worked perfectly, I didn't take out the pilot light tube but vacuumed that small air opening you show in the video- which dust gathered in the hole, then I cleaned the inside of the rest of the heater. And, it worked!-Awesome-ly Thanks for the video!
Thank you!! Mine is dual fuel, different make. Same problem. The tech wouldn’t touch it. So I found your video, it was excellent!! Mine was just two screws to get it open. The air hoke was facing out and fine forceps removed a dust wad. I blew out the pilot tube. Used a drinking straw brush to clean out any adhering dust and blew it out again. I didn’t need any wrenches or take it apart at all! Lucky to have an easy to service unit! Thanks for a great inspiration video....it saved me several hundred dollars for a new unit and installation. And it kept the “nothing seriously wrong with it” unit out of recycling! You rocked this!
@@Robinson-Homestead yes! This is mine! But the previous homeowner left me no paperwork and the unit has nothing in it or on it to help with make:model or parts. But your video was outstanding and it hasn’t stopped running since! Thank you again!
Excellent video. I now have the confidence to attempt to fix this problem. You have just saved this Brit a few bob. From one Kevin to another, thank you.
Well done video, and as someone who is learning about how to fix things now that I'm on my own, I really appreciate your attention to detail and good, clear camera work. I already watched 2 other videos that only showed how to clean the pilot with a q-tip and alcohol, and I've already done that. I've had my heater at least 12 years, and that simple cleaning used to be enough, but not this year. I was afraid to take the thermo-coupling loose, but after watching how you did it, I think I can handle it! I'll be back to let you know if I fixed it, or ruined it. LOL Thank you, sir and Merry Christmas!
Thank you for the refresher course!! I was certified to work on these things but it has been so many years ago I wasn’t 100% sure. Awesome job and exactly what to do!! Thank you!
My furnace kept "going off" without warning. Tonight while I was upstairs, the furnace flame extinguished and was releasing gas for over an hour! I watched your video and now feel very confident I can fix the problem. The parts you disassembled, matched my heater parts. Thanks for the great, easy to follow video.
Thank you so much for this video. I took Peters suggestion and took pictures as I took my wall heater apart. But alas I couldn’t get the very last screw out to clean the tubing. I shielded the unit and put a little WD 40...but still couldn’t get it out. Headed to Walmart for some compressed air and thought “ what the heck ...I’ll give this a try. As the air holes were exposed first did those and then went the other way. Tried to light the pilot.....and it WORKED. My hands are not real strong so I think that was part of the problem. Cleaned the unit as suggested and put it all back together. And now my four season room is toasty warm. I am a 73 yr old woman whose handy man husband is in a nursing home and I am very proud of myself right now. Thank you again for excellent video.
OHHHH Thanks for your comment I am almost 70 and hubby died. I am preparing to dig into this myself. Terrified. If you can do it I can do it. I also have arthritic hands. Here I go...........

Thanks!!! I was seriously just about to throw this heater away because I thought I tried everything to get it to work again. I used canned air for dusting out computers and it worked perfectly. Works like new now.
Wonderfully, simply explained. You have a wonderfull manner about you. Thank you so much. I don't own one of these, however, it makes me less frightened to have a look at my DeLonghi Duo Turbo, which is not burning properly. Cheers from Bill in New Zealand.
Thank you for the video! Totally solved my problem. For others out there with the problem of flame shutting off after only a few minutes (or seconds even) your pilot and/or ODS does not need to be that dirty, especially not as dirty as the one in the video. I thought mine was clean enough, but just by blowing air through them and picking some minor dust out my pilot went nice and blue (no yellow or orange tip) and problem solved!
Man i cant thank you enough. Mine is a GCH480 Comfort Glow. Although it has a different part number on the decal . I kept searching an searching and finally one day when i typed in Comfort Glow Walmart came up. So i clicked on it. And it had a different part # than what was on the decal. I typed in the newly found GCH480 and was able to find some manuals and diagrams. But really no troubleshooting steps. Im the type if i know how something works and i can get some troubleshooting steps. I can use hand tools or a volt/ohm meter or dial calipers etc. I had read somewhere that the flame sensor might have to be (man)ually adjusted . Slightly adjusting the angle of the sensor towards the flame. Couldn't get it to move. Then i seen your video. Now the living room is nice and cozy ONCE AGAIN . THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
I just watched your video to guide me through cleaning my pilot tube. Originally i had no idea what was wrong. The pilot wouldn't stay lit and now works great!!! Thank you!
Thanks alot, I fixed mine no problem. Although I have a air compressor, I used a can of air that I had lying around. I turned it on and it's been running 7 hours straight.
Thanks for a clear, concise video for this DIY repair. Mine is a 17 year old infrared 30000btu Comfort Glow that wouldn't light after sitting the summer unused at my cottage. I followed your instructions and am back up running with a clear blue flame. Thumbs up on this video!
C Davis I have a little buddy heater and star smelling very strong light Co I clean it in a still smell it is lighting and burning normal pilot is clean butt smell very strong like Co
@@Robinson-Homestead Well Kevin. You have kept this ole 30k Comfort Glow natural gas wall heater going for yet another 4 years. I just had to do another cleaning, and once again, followed your expert instructions to a tee. And, once again, she’s going like a champ. I wonder how long you and me can keep this ole thing going? Each year I say I’m going to replace it. Ha! Great video Kevin. You saved me twice now. Really appreciate it! You made it easy, even for an old(er) gal. Stay safe!
Hi again Kevin! Just finished another successful cleaning of my heater with your valuable help! Couldn't have done it without your well explained instruction. She's chuggin along like she's brand new. Yours is the best video on TH-cam! Thanks for the third time in seven years!🙂
Thank you sir, I was about to throw out my vent free gas heater and buy a $400 replacement. My model is not the same as yours in the video but I applied your techniques and my pilot flame went from a flickering yellow to a blue torch. The thermocouple reads the heat and the heater stays lit. Thank you so much, Scott
This video was great. Helped me take mine apart and everything. When i checked mine it was as clean as a whistle. The pilot won’t stay lit for me though. But at least I checked this off the list. So now I need to find another video.
Thanks Kevin you got my pilot light back into shape. Now for the model I use was alot different. Was a Mr. Heater Large they have that thing designed for it not to be repaired but I proved them wrong mine is fixed it may not look pretty anymore but it working great thanks for the time and effort you put into your video here. It sure got me back going.
😊 👍 you solve my problem I have new heater about year old Mr heater every thing was clean was problem to turn on you said one thing that heat up about 1 to 2 minute still I have problem what I did I did with extra lighter heat up about 4 to 5 minutes than start work good advice thank you.
Great video!! I actually threw one of these away a few years ago for this exact reason, and bought another one, but never again now that I've seen exactly how to do this. thank you!!
I have never cleaned one this completely. I have seen my dad use leaf blowers to blow all the dust out. I would not recommend that method, but it is a way. Great video.
Thanks , I have a Comfort glow that wouldn’t stay lit , I followed your advice and now it’s comfy cozy. It happened after I bumped it semi hard so I assumed I broke the thermal coupler
Wonderful video. Very clear and really excellent camera angles and views. Your work is very much appreciated. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video :)
Thank you!! Thank you thank you! I've suffered half the winter with this Glo-Warm heater in the fixer-upper I moved into getting worse and worse, shutting off all the time. Finally these last few days it was virtually unusable. I swapped it out for another old Glo-Warm unit from the previous owner's storage that *also* must have had a dusty pilot, and only after that I found your video...now I have a nice healthy blue diagonal pilot light instead of the orange vertical one, and the heater's staying on! (and I also know now how to wrap yellow plumber's tape on the connections with frozen fingers)
I like your video and it works well, I too use these stoves and have always just took the front off and used compressed air to blow everything out, and it has always resulted in a beautiful blue flame with no problems, thanks for the video though.
Appreciate your video I took some compressed air and took that little nut loose on the bottom and blows to it and looks like 50 lb of dust came out of it and now the things will blue Bluer Than Blue appreciate it
Hey Kevin, Thank you very much for making this video. My Girlfriends gas heater quit and I went step by step and now blue flame and it is staying on. Again, thank you so very much.
Thanks dude...I am about to try all this. I can't get any repair people to answer my calls....so I had to resort to youtube.. You seem like a nice guy. Patient, a good teacher.
Thanks fixed the my old pro-comm wall heater. had a dust bunny and would not stay lit..I was fixing to make a Lowes trip..thanks for the tip! Works great
I will definitely try this. I replaced the thermocouple already and it is still hard to light but easier than it did before replacing the thermocouple. My pilot light lights but it when I let the button off that lights the pilot, it extinguishes the flame. Until I replaced the thermocouple I had the stove tilted to have the flame hit further up the thermocouple. It would light that way but reluctantly. Now it lights reluctantly upright. Heater is on now so I will try to remember to clean this out when it gets warmer.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
Thank you so much for the comment glad to help you.

Stay safe!
@@peascarrots6829 just glad to help my friend thank you for the comment and watching see you in another four years lol.
Hi again Kevin! Just finished another successful cleaning of my heater with your valuable help! Couldn't have done it without your well explained instruction. She's chuggin along like she's brand new. Yours is the best video on TH-cam! Thanks for the third time in seven years!🙂
Kevin, good job. Cleaned my unit with no problem. Instructions were great, right on.
Thank you for watching glad to help William.
Thank you sir, I was about to throw out my vent free gas heater and buy a $400 replacement. My model is not the same as yours in the video but I applied your techniques and my pilot flame went from a flickering yellow to a blue torch. The thermocouple reads the heat and the heater stays lit. Thank you so much,
Scott
Thanks for the comment Scott glad I could help Merry Christmas my friend.
Outstanding! I did exactly as you presented and my heater is working perfectly. Blue flame ask the way around
That's awesome to hear! Happy Thanksgiving my friend.
This video was great. Helped me take mine apart and everything. When i checked mine it was as clean as a whistle. The pilot won’t stay lit for me though. But at least I checked this off the list. So now I need to find another video.
This video may help th-cam.com/video/Gem0TMiQRtA/w-d-xo.html

So good to see someone using common sense for a change, and if your not sure how it goes back together take a photo of it before you pull it apart.

I have never cleaned one this completely. I have seen my dad use leaf blowers to blow all the dust out. I would not recommend that method, but it is a way. Great video.

Thanks for watching Hakim.
I am glad to help Scott thanks for watching.
This is an excellent video. I had this problem with an insert fireplace hearth, I followed the video and had instant success. Thank you very much.

Thank you. Very nicely done. I will being this now to fix mine this afternoon!

I like your video and it works well, I too use these stoves and have always just took the front off and used compressed air to blow everything out, and it has always resulted in a beautiful blue flame with no problems, thanks for the video though.
+harold edmonds Thank you for your comment.
Kevin thank you for the video! You just saved me $200.00.

Excellent. I have the same heater, and even the same orange-handled screwdriver. I’m all set.
Thanks for watching Super Fly.
excellent description . very thorough in the details. thank you sir,
Glad it was helpful! thanks for the comment.
This will work for you just take pictures take your time and it won't take that long to do let me know if it works out for you thanks for the comment.
