You are a great teacher with the best instructions I have seen of all the videos I have watched on TH-cam. (hours) I met a Spanish speaking gentleman last night who has had no heat since cold weather hit. Over the phone, with his English speaking daughter, I was able to determine what the code for their Amana gas heater was. She counted 8 flashes, and we found on the door that this was the igniter. You showed exactly what I needed to know to diagnose if it really is bad and how to replace it. I am going out today to test it for them and thanks for showing me how to ignite it so I can get them some heat. I am just a DIY guy that tries to help people who cannot afford to hire a professional. If it is beyond what I feel is safe for me to do I will help them find the best Professional locally. Thanks. I will have to let you know what I find.
Never actually worked on a furnace but hearing the steps of our furnace kicking on for so many years and now visually seeing it happen during your description it instantly makes sense. Hearing the motor kicking, then the click of the gas and then the next step the four flames kicking in is how i hear and tell if our furnace is out of whack.. because my pilot light went out and it kept shutting off but everything else kept running and I could hear the difference before I opened it up to see. Thanks for the video!
Its pretty amazing how accurately you remembered the sequence of operation on your furnace and the order of how it fires up! Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!
@@WordofAdviceTV lol Your video gave me the confidence to light my furnace because my pilot light is out atm. I was thinking there has to be a way to light it without the pilot light.. but I was hesitant to do it at first, thinking I hope I don't blow the house up. Let me youtube it real quick. Your furnace looks exactly like mine, too. So that helped a lot.
Thanks for the video. My igniter failed last Friday night. Started getting cold and when I checked the thermostat it showed heating in progress, but furnace wasn't running. After resetting (shut power off, then turned back on) I watched and listened to what was going on. Inducer motor came on, gas came on, but know ignition. Went to youtube, found your videos. Figured out igniter was bad and how to change it and also how to manually light it to get through the night. Was able to find a parts supply shop open on a Saturday, paid less then $20 for part and had furnace back up and running in about 10 mins.
I appreciate it i diagnosed an replaced my motherboard because of you an i just manually lit my burner because im waiting on the part an its 30 degrees ur a life saver cooking now have it on 79😂
This is great. Currently experience a hard cold front in central texas. One of my units stopped working. I used your video to manual start the furnace. Half the house was pretty cold. It's now warming up!!! Thank you for posting this!
Wow you have saved my life after watching multiple videos your video gave me the solution with the gas valve not sending gas to the burners. I just unplugged the gas valve power and clean it and plugged it back then it started sending gas out. Thank you so much 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
You just saved my bacon. I had a bad igniter at 6 pm the night before the ice storm. I hand light it to warm the house up , but I had to wait to replace it the next day. Thanks for all the awesome videos.
You are the Man.... I did lit my furnace manually because my Ignitor was broken in 2 pieces and on saturday- sunday all shops closed, called more than 20 companies, only one company willing to come to charge Just service call apx $200 and just Diagnose it. Its Already diagnosed by me that ignitor broken... they said its this can cost me $400 -1000. Now i know I will just buy Ignitor on Monday and put it there... THANKS FOR YOUR HELP.
Thanks a lot! this saved the day for my family, we were -5 C last night and Furnace did not worked, this video did the trick, all stores are closed so until tomorrow I have a chance to keep my family warm, THANK YOU!
Thank you!!!!!!!!!! You saved my family and I from freezing our rear-ends off. This video gave me some confidence that I wasnt going to blow my head off!
Thank you! Was a bit nervous to manually light my Lennox LF 24 garage furnace. After a bit of mental back and fourth, I said here goes... glad I did. Worked like a charm.
Thank you. I was just reading about a neighbor getting gouged by a local repair company for a simple ignitor replacement. It inspired me to buy a backup flame sensor ($8). But a backup ignitor will cost a little more and might never even be used. This video shows me I can manage to survive a few days if my ignitor goes bad.
After applying all of your common or simple tutorial suggestions and checking everything with a multimeter, I have track down the issue to a gas valve that has fuel but will not open. To double check my work, I paid a local HVAC servicer to send a kind young man to confirm. He confirms we are correct. Still waiting on a repair quote and haven't found a guide of this type of repair yet. Word of Advice TV, break me down my friend.
I've always been in commercial HVACR. One company I worked for, the owner's Mother-in-law's furnace, an 80+ like this one, had the same issue. I got paid to sit in her basement all night and keep manually lighting her furnace. The next day they sent an apprentice up with the new ignitor. I never asked why he didn't just pay the apprentice to sit there all night! I got a nice paycheck that week, and brownie points with the owner's wife for taking care of her mom. (It was very cold that night.) Those brownie points were better than the extra OT in my pay! FWIW, I used my MAPP gas torch; it was easier than a cigarette lighter or matches.
Your videos have been a godsend! I watched another of your videos on ignitor failures and narrowed it down to that but then realized after replacing the ignitor it was a bad circuit board. I was a little frightened to take an open flame to natural gas coming from a pipe, but you explained it so carefully that it laid my fears aside! Thankfully as it dips past -2 degrees here tonight at least I can keep my pipes from freezing! Thanks again for the great information!!!
Not well versed on furnace igniter parts, but I believe it was a hot surface igniter as it would start to glow when I activated the thermostat. That old furnace was replaced last November thankfully, but thanks to this video, it was an expense that was delayed for at least another 6 months as I just lit it manually when I needed it. Thanks @@alanran9043
I bet unethical recidential HVAC contractors hate this guy's your youtube channel. As an HVAC tech myself, I know most people have what it takes to figure out most common problems with their heating and cooling equipment.
Thanks dude! I replaced the igniter on the heater at my rental for $25 and it worked! You're awesome! Probably saved $300, loved calling back the service company and telling them i fixed by watching a TH-cam video and cancelling their appointment!
I really appreciate you taking your precious time to share your knowledge with us. I just light a furnace that has a bad hot surface igniter, you just save my family a couple $100's
You have no idea how helpful your videos are. living in Minnesota winters can be cold and to make it worse a broken furnace when it's -30 :( thanks a lot you the best.
My furnace went out over the weekend. I was not about to invite a service technician into my house due to the COVID-19. I used your videos to troubleshoot and narrowed down the problem to the igniter. I ordered one online and it will take a few days to get here. You saved the day by showing me how to light the furnace manually. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!!
Kudos, I started looking into TH-cam videos then came across.... cleaned the flame sensor, Thank god! I also noticed the air pump tubing was cracked and cut was disconnected. So totally no air supply due to poor job done by an elec. contractor lasted just a year or so. After half hour work, saw the beautiful blue flame and saved hundred fifty bucks or so. THANKS
It happened to me on the weekend for two days , had to go up and down every time the furnace to heat up the house and stop working had to go down to the basement again. It's a very good video link always thank you.
Thank you sir! I figured it was possible to light it with a lighter but wasn’t sure it was safe. Thanks for helping me keep my house warm until I can get a new igniter.
👍👍JAY .. ME & MY FAMILY THANK U - it was 24 F yesterday and you had someone whom had some electrical experience (3rd yr Apprentice level 30 yrs ago in H.S.).solve a serious problem with a replacement ignitor👍👍
One of the best videos ever!!! Step by step instructions were awesome. And you showing me what it is supposed to look like when it’s functioning properly. Just very well done, and I have heat until I can get a new igniter.
Thank a million Jay for this and other high quality videos. Specially, I was able to use this video to turn on my burner on and looks like igniter needs replacement.
I'll give this a shot. Last year the same thing happened, and the HVAC guy charged me 70 dollars just to manually start my furnace. I'm sure he didn't actually change out the ignitor. Luckily I'm a grilling enthusiast, and I have long shift lighters!
Thank you! Just turned on my furnace. Temperature is freezing here and would have been three days without heat till Monday. Will get the igniter and replace myself now :)
You are a complete blessing to me right now. Thank you soooo much for posting videos about home heaters. You are saving me alot of money, time, and not freezing to death. :)
Definitely a good way to get a furnace going during troubleshooting to make sure the heat exchangers not toast or the gas valve isnt gone. Pretty easy way to lose your eyebrows if you aren't careful though. A good trick is to make sure you have a standing lighter flame nearby the burner as soon as the gas valve opens. Its only going to open for a few seconds so not very much gas will build up. Good video as usual!
Thank you Mark! I appreciate the additional input and the eyebrows warning! :) I should have mentioned that one should not have their face right in front of the burners when they do this...
@@WordofAdviceTV I have a question. How do you keep a furnace ignitor going white? My furnace ignitor turned white and wouldn't work in November, so I ordered a new one. I installed a new one and it worked until today. It's directly in front of the heat and it's white. I've seen people clean it or gently sandpaper it but I think it's beyond this point. The ignitor is directly in front of the flame so it's guaranteed to stop working if I order a new one. What's the solution here? I have a Trane XR80 brand. Thank you for any help in advance.
Great information, answered my question about manually lighting my furnace. I figured that I could, just preferred seeing someone do it prior to me possibly burning the house down. Your other video helped me locate the bad igniter and order a new one. It was nice to manually light the furnace in the meantime while waiting on the new igniter. Thank you for your help in getting me out of a jam.
As a 87 year old thank you. Just had the service replace a cracked igniter. Good to know in the future at least someone could lite the furnace for me. Was without heat 24 hours down to 54 degrees.
Thank you for your vids!!! Saved me a lot of money. Plus avoided a sales man trying to tell me that it was the gas. He was surprised when I told him we were able to light it.
My son replaced the pressure switch on his furnace for $50 and the burner on his water heater, saving him $$$. HVAC repairman wanted $1,200 to repair his furnace.
Awesome video. I was having issues with my furnace working when it wanted to. Come to find out my lines for my pressure switch were clogged up. Fixed that and it's running like a champ now. Keep up the good work. I learned alot from you. I'm expanding my horizons with electrical outside of Navy Ships.
Just curious- a) How did you clean out the lines? Compressed air, pipe cleaner, etc.? And how do you keep whatever junk is in the lines from getting to the switch? b) If the pressure switch wasn’t working (or failing intermittently), the rest of the sequence (igniter, gas valve) should not proceed?
@@peacefrog0521 if pressure switch is not working nothing else will work. It acts like a safety switch. Refer to the electrical drawing on your system.
Thank you very much you just saved us a night of very cold 🥶 weather, much appreciated now I know for next time what to do this is the second time in 7 years we have had to replace the ignitor so I think that's not too bad
I'm waiting on a plumber. I think my igniter may be the culprit. That said, I had no luck trying to manually light it... Even though I've been able to manually light it in the past. It seems to be happening more often now... I'm praying that a new part will solve our problem. Thank you for your clear explanation.
@@WordofAdviceTV Ok I got fired up...but perhaps a bit too quickly in all my eternally optimistic thinking. Everything perfect but wont relight on its own...solid red light Igniter glowing but wont relight on its own....damnit!
Since i could manually light its obviously getting gas, I dont hear any clicking but the igniter lites up for 15 seconds or so and then powers off once no ignition happens...but i can manually light like you did and they all light and get going so i have gas... But is it enough? Pressure? Switch? I checked tube...poked orfices Im so close! Works great when i manually do it tho. I KNOW THE ANSWER IS SO SIMPLE . ILL GET IT!
@@gregtenney7279 That sounds like a weak igniter. I have a feeling that if you replace it all will work as it used to :) The other possibility is that the igniter is positioned not close enough to the burner. This should not be the case unless you moved/took out the igniter recently.
@@WordofAdviceTV you'd think that it would light with as bright as it is and i was thinking the same thing about positioning problem but it hasnt been touched or replaced so why would anything change since it worked fine before. ....ill just keep trying watching videos and playing with it but something changed. All components work but something changed! ! I know the answer is so simple and so stupid its not even funny.lol Back to work!
wOW....I had no idea this was possible. Always pictured death and explosions haha. This saved my family on a cold winter weekend. Didnt have to pay crazy money for weekend repair guy.
Many thanks! This was the step i needed to prove I had a bad ignitor. And of course it blew on a Saturday morning so this helped me get through the weekend.
I had success by using a heat gun to blow hot air at the burner area while the igniter was glowing. After this initial assistance, the furnace continued to successfully ignite itself. I believe the problem was caused by frozen igniter parts. A self-feeding problem due to the furnace not running for days leading to the furnace parts becoming too cold than normal. The draft inducer motor was broken and it took a couple of days to find the part and replace it. I run into the ignition issue after replacing the motor. You should be able to use a hair dryer if you don't have a heat gun. I believe using a space heater or similar options to bring the furnace closet/area to room temperature could work. Please remember to practice safety and not rely too much on comments like mine.
Thank you! I can't say I am an expert in modulating furnaces since I see more of the older models. But if the opportunity presents itself, I'll try to make a video on one of those as well. (None of my family has a modulating furnace and can't film customers' units..)
Thank you very much for the very clear instruction, I can temporarily fix it while it is - 22 degrees celius at night, and wait until tomorow morning I'll buy new igniter pilot. Thanks again.
Lol i couldnt grt my furnace to light. The led said pressure switch was stuck closed. All i did was push the bottom hose up and it fired right up. Thank you for your videos. Saved me some serious money it being xmas and all.
OK so my 2002 Goodman went down last night. A video by A Handle on things went step by step trouble shooting and saved me from ordering a new circuit board. My igniter went bad. A couple hrs on line and phone 4 days earliest delivery. What a racket. Local $50+ ebay $27 to $38 free ship. So glad I came across this video to get me going but not with out bumps in the road. I used a BBQ lighter right on top, works good. I turned the thermostat to 80 so I could shut it off when I wanted to. It ran for 3 or 4 min and shut the fire off. I was thinking the over heat switch was turning it off. I was right. I have over half the registers closed in rooms I don't use. I opened a couple trying to keep the over heat switch from shutting things down but no good. It was 55 out today so we were OK but now it's 35 so I went to the basement to cycle it get the temp up so I could go to bed and sitting in a chair relighting it when it shuts off.. OK OK I'm getting to it. I glanced over and saw the gas shut off valve. I started closing it till I just barely noticed a reduction in flame and noise. PERFECT! Back up stairs with a beer and TV till It got to 75 and shut it off. Going to bed. By the way, that over heat switch has been working like that for 11 yrs. I think I'm going to leave the flame where it's at. Anything wrong with that? 10 yrs I replaced the vacuum switch. 16 yrs now the igniter.
Those older American standard/tranes are absolute beats. Until that heat exchanger goes, hang on to it my friend. Those and the York diamond furnaces are the best I’ve ever seen
Excellent information! It will be very useful in case of an emergency. Already subscribed and plan to watch all your video. This is entertainment to me since I really enjoy learning from you.
thanks a lot! saved me and my family from freezing too! btw, ours is electric(lighter)...unsure how it works, i turned off the light and turned it back on several times...and turned it on from nest, it did the magic! seems it was stuck! thank God for it coz ours is way back and cant light it manually like this one!
Hi Jay. I'm on call this week and I just reccomended this video to a customer. It is currently 2:40 a.m. and he said his furnace is giving him an error code for ignition lockout. I think you saved me a service call tonight
Thank You Thank You Thank You Sooooi Much you helped me light mine again and we have heat after days of not knowing what I was doing your video was so Precise..Thank You Sir
Please do not listen to this guy. This is really dangerous. I have been an industrial/commercial tech for 11 years. I have never lit a gas heat furnace with a lighter. PLEASE call someone that knows what they r doing. If u like ur eyebrows and hands DONT DO THIS.
Watching you do this gives me a little anxiety. I’ve never been crazy about messing with natural gas. I’ve lit 🔥 plenty of gas stoves, but when I smell the gas, I feel like I’m going to have a heart attack...but this is awesome information you’re sharing with us all...
If this is timed and done correctly, it is very very rare that eye brows get singed :) Sorry for causing you anxiety but glad that you found the information useful!
If you’re not comfortable don’t do it. For us that have worked with nat gas for a long time it’s very safe. Wear safety goggles. Don’t use a lighter...use something like you use for lighting a grill.
Thank you, you're a life saver! I didn't know I could do this manual ignition. It just happened to me this holiday, my furnace not working and my ignitor burnout and no parts store are open until tueday.😭😭😭
In my experience, have an extra igniter/flame sensor handy(usually built in together)....VERY easy part to replace and solves two possible issues with one part...

@@WordofAdviceTV my old boss always used to say "god hates a coward" light er up dude eyebrows grow back in a month! Lmao
This is a great video we’ve been without heat for two days because of a Bad igniter and after watching your video I got heat thanks
Thank you so much Jay, your videos are super helpful! Just saved us from freezing all night in -35 Calgary weather!
Thanks man, you are saving me hundreds in repairs that I can easily do myself!
Thank you! Glad to hear you were able to find and fix the problem in your furnace! Stay warm and may your horizons always expand!
Just curious-
a) How did you clean out the lines? Compressed air, pipe cleaner, etc.? And how do you keep whatever junk is in the lines from getting to the switch?
b) If the pressure switch wasn’t working (or failing intermittently), the rest of the sequence (igniter, gas valve) should not proceed?
@@peacefrog0521 I used compressed air from a computer keyboard cleaner
@@peacefrog0521 if pressure switch is not working nothing else will work. It acts like a safety switch. Refer to the electrical drawing on your system.
Thank you, helped me keep my family warm. It's about 4 degrees tonight.
Glad I could help, stay warm!!
Best videos ever! Thank you so much. Don't know why those big warehouse places like Lowe's and home depot don't carry furnace parts.
Watched a bunch of videos but yours gave me the manual lighting courage I needed...Mirror? who needs one! I am fired up! great job!
Haha glad I could help you out Greg! Thanks for leaving a comment, stay warm!
@@WordofAdviceTV Ok I got fired up...but perhaps a bit too quickly in all my eternally optimistic thinking.
Everything perfect but wont relight on its own...solid red light
Igniter glowing but wont relight on its own....damnit!
Since i could manually light its obviously getting gas, I dont hear any clicking but the igniter lites up for 15 seconds or so and then powers off once no ignition happens...but i can manually light like you did and they all light and get going so i have gas...
But is it enough?
Pressure? Switch?
I checked tube...poked orfices
Im so close!
I know the answer is so simple and so stupid its not even funny.lol
Back to work!
wOW....I had no idea this was possible. Always pictured death and explosions haha. This saved my family on a cold winter weekend. Didnt have to pay crazy money for weekend repair guy.
YOUR AWESOME BRO , IGNITOR WENT OUT LITERALLY RIGHT AS WE JUST GOT HIT WITH A HUGE SNOW STORM , KEPT ME AND MY FAMILY NICE A COZY . THANK YOU !
You're most welcome! I'm happy to hear that the video helped you endure the snow storm!
I am 20 years in the business I like watching your videos they are great. If you know, how about teaching us about modulating furnaces
Thank you! I can't say I am an expert in modulating furnaces since I see more of the older models. But if the opportunity presents itself, I'll try to make a video on one of those as well. (None of my family has a modulating furnace and can't film customers' units..)
Yep that’s the best way to do it temporarily fix because all the heat and air people want people to buy new unit for 10 grand thanks a bunch
@@hermanrogers1325 I KNOW....The are thieves to do that to people
Thank you very much for the very clear instruction, I can temporarily fix it while it is - 22 degrees celius at night, and wait until tomorow morning I'll buy new igniter pilot. Thanks again.
Why did the turkey not have dessert?
Because he was busy shooting a youtube video. 🤣🤣🤣
Great content! Subbed
GREAT VIDEO !!!!!!!!!! You did an awesome job of explaining the process of manually lighting the furnace ...
Thanks, saved me a cold night and will be picking up a Ignitor in the morning.
You are the best at what you do and it works exactly the way you said it would... and thanks for the good explanation
Your video really helps tonight
My ignitor needs to be replaced it’s 37 degrees
Thanks for the manual tutorial.
This video helped me. My ignitor failed and it’s a Sunday morning. This will keep us warm until I buy a replacement part. Thank you!
You're welcome! Stay warm!
So helpful! Thanks for this video. Have a bad igniter on a Lennox furnace and it will likely be 3 to 4 days before a tech can come.
Great video. Looks like it would be a good idea to replace a 6 year old igniter and save the old good one for a emergency replacement
Thanks a million! It's Christmas Eve and we have no heat! This will help us limp through until we can have it repaired.
Those older American standard/tranes are absolute beats. Until that heat exchanger goes, hang on to it my friend. Those and the York diamond furnaces are the best I’ve ever seen
Thank you so much for this video ! Amazing ! Save my family from a very cold night
You are a genius You just save my day thanks I did it and that's working
You're the number one professional
Excellent! I didn't understand what happened, but it was helpful to give me a place to start and head in a direction. Dad jokes were a nice touch!
A video about manually lighting a furnace that begins with an explosion😂😂
you are good at your step by step description
You've saved this single woman from freezing 🥶
Or killed her, see there are many reasons why a furnace won't lite and to manually bypass its safety features are seriously dangerous!
Same feeling
I am available for warm up duty. 😉

Thank you Math Man! :)
Thank you for the video! I just helped my neighbor with his furnace!!
Thank you for the informative video! Great job on describing and helping us all understand!
Please do not listen to this guy. This is really dangerous. I have been an industrial/commercial tech for 11 years. I have never lit a gas heat furnace with a lighter. PLEASE call someone that knows what they r doing.
If u like ur eyebrows and hands DONT DO THIS.
Sir you teach so well. Keep going we will follow you.
Thanks man you saved me on this freezing Christmas morning
Thank you!!!! worked like a charm on a cold night until we get the ignitor part in.
Watching you do this gives me a little anxiety. I’ve never been crazy
about messing with natural gas.
I’ve lit 🔥 plenty of gas stoves, but
when I smell the gas, I feel like I’m
going to have a heart attack...but
this is awesome information you’re
sharing with us all...
If this is timed and done correctly, it is very very rare that eye brows get singed :) Sorry for causing you anxiety but glad that you found the information useful!
Word of Advice TV, I had a time travel joke, but you didn’t like it...
@@classic287 Hahaha that one's good and simple! :) Thank you!
If you’re not comfortable don’t do it. For us that have worked with nat gas for a long time it’s very safe. Wear safety goggles. Don’t use a lighter...use something like you use for lighting a grill.
DONALD1951, Ya, I don’t have anything running on gas anymore.
Oh, wait, I do have a map gas torch
in the shed.....

THANKS SO MUCH !!!!!!!!
Hey Jay, thanks a lot for this video. It helped me figured out the underlying issue with my furnace. much appreciated
