Gene and Devin writing Oh My Fucking God in 10 minutes while the KoRn guys listen at the door going 'wtf is going on in here..?' is my new favorite story
I had listened to a few songs from City like the chugging song that is detox or the thunder of All Hail the Flesh, but I hadn't heard OMFG. Having just listened to it now, that's exactly my reaction listening to the song. What the hell is happening in the song
Don't know if you are aware, but Gene has a live streaming channel on Twitch. He is such a cool and sincere guy, and you can communicate with him directly on his channel.
Gene, Dave and Gar are still to this day my Big 3. I was much more influenced as a guitar player listening to those drummers. I played the 6-string as if I was playing drums. God bless these guys!
Gene is just the best. I fucking love Strapping Young Lad precisely because it had some of the most groovy and brutal drums I'd ever heard. Skeksis is like metal drumming perfection
It's uncanny how many great albums, with different bands in different eras, Gene has played on. It's like he is a time traveler from the future who wanted to go back and play on his favorite metal albums. As a fan of Testament, Dark Angel, Death, and Devin...thank you for all the great songs!
Man Gene is probably my favorite drummers, this is sweet hearing him talk about his legacy here. I honestly will say Demonic is hands down my favorite Testament album followed closely by The Gathering, I wish Testament would play Demonic songs live
Demonic is an odd choice for a favorite lol. Dave Lombardo was their drummer when I saw them a couple months back and they played at least 2 songs off the Gathering.
I listen to the song Hatreds Rise like once a month for all these years. Some of the other songs aren't as good, but that song really stands out. Slashing through the fight before him, dressed in the armor of the dead!
"Demonic" is not my favourite Testament album, but the 1st one i ever heard of Testament's albums. "Demonic" will always hve a special place for me in that regard. "The Gathering" is easily my favourite & probably the best album they hve ever released. Just a classic from start to finish.
I got to meet Gene while touring with Death in 1993 in Santa Clara. Craig Locicero (forbidden) was playing in place of Andy LaRocque. Awesome show to say the least and seeing Gene do his thing with Chuck growling up front. A show that I'll never forget.
When I had a radio show, I was lucky enough to interview Gene when SYL played on the Alien tour around 2004, and he was (and still is) the Nicest guy in the business bar none! its always a pleasure to hear him speak. he literally has so many stories he could tell and I have never heard him have a bad word to say about anyone....well.. He did call me a fat bastard at Bloodstock in 2010..., but look at that face.. how can you not love that punum?!
So much love for Gene!! He is the Steve Gadd of metal drumming. His memory still blows me away. How does one remember all that? Completely forgot he played in Fear Factory. Thanks for This, thoroughly enjoyed it.
Symbolic is at the top of the list when it comes time list the greatest recorded drum performance in history. It's that good. Gene is epic. The second you hear him, you know who it is. I think his cymbal work is second to none. Just try and play it and hit all those accents.
I got to see Fear Factory for the first time ever when Gene was playing. I walked to him and ask him for his autograph. He looked at me and say...."you know we can be brothers"? I told him "it was my privilege, as a fan, for him to even think that? He made my experience memorable. Then I was 6"1 , 350lbs, long black hair. :)
Gene is not how youd picture a guy who plays all the music he has written. Literally the most down to earth dude. Every interview you can get with him we're here for it.
Genes work on Galaktikon I and II are some of my favorite drumming moments in all of music. On My Way is an absolute beast of a track, and there’s even a play through version of it on TH-cam floating around. Don’t sleep on Galaktikon, its amazing and Gene makes it even more amazing with his drums.
The thought of seeing and hearing this humble man blasting away on the drums for the next 25 years, just fills me with pure happiness! Good for him he is living the lifestyle to achieve this. Go, Gene!
Death's "Symbolic" record changed my life. It was such a musical drumming experience, I no longer needed most "Death Metal". I've been a big fan of Gene since that record, and I love the kind of guy he is in interviews. Very nice interview!
Gene’s fill coming into the final chorus of All Hail the New Flesh (the one where it sounds like a kettle drum or something) is one of my favourite parts in all metal.
All of genes work on those strapping records is the best parts of metal. The meeting of a guy who really understands drums and how they should fit in a song (devy) and a guy who can play anything and knows how to make extreme metal drumming dynamic (gene) has never been topped in metal imo. It was close when devy worked with dirk verbeuren on deconstruction, but dirks signature style comes out of that a lot where’s Gene just integrates perfectly with Devin. I want them to work together again really bad.
First discovered him through Dethklok around 2009 and was instantly hooked. Met him briefly at a Testament show in 2012 and had just enough time to tell him how influential he was for me and talk a bit about Dethklok. I realized that him and I both come from a similar background, ambidextrous playing, leading double kick patterns with the left foot and being self taught learning everything by ear / air drumming. Everything he does is the definition serving the song and I owe my ability to play tastefully to him. Such an amazing dude and I'm glad to see him looking so good and healthy now.
Amazing to hear chuck's influence on the whole genre and helped gene finding and trying out new things in metal drumming that most iconic gene's albums were inspired by death albums
As a drummer myself, Gene has been my absolute favorite every since Individual Thought Patterns came out. The way he incorporated the bells and splash's into his drum rolls just blew me away! I have followed his career pretty close every since. This video is a great piece of metal history. The guy is so personable! Thanks for this upload!

Damn, I don't know when Gene lost weight but the dude's looking good. Such an amazing drummer. Even though he's very renown he still feels overlooked for some reason when people talk about great drummers.

A certified GOAT drummer, period. Also, speaking of the Human album, shoutout to Sean Reinert (RIP💔). Godspeed, and Goodwill. You are the only Drummer to bring me to tears 🙌 🙏 💗
I'm being into metal for over 20 years at this point and *SYMBOLIC* has still absolute best sound production to me. Especially in drums department. So aerial, atmospheric, though strong and punchy... And those beats in Zero Tolerance, Perennial Quest (BTW I did guitar cover of it on 8-string on my channel), etc... Fantastic. One of the best drummers among persons and one of the best persons among drummers!
This is a crash course in the life of one of the most talented drummers ever. Great anecdotes, great person. It's a shame that he and Chuck Schuldiner were not as close as we desired but the material they did together, resonantes in our souls for ever!!!!!
"Alien" is a great album but the SYL classic is "City". A really great album also if you are pissed off & hating the world. Also the 1st album I heard Gene on.
Looking good, Gene! Such a soft spoken guy, was very happy that you worked with and toured with Testament. Probably not the most challenging material, but you and Steve fit so well. Nothing but the best for you in your future endeavors!
That man changed my complete vision not only of the drumming world but of music in general. Needless to say, he's a great role model and inspiration for me.
I'm finding it hard to square this soft-spoken, erudite and thoroughly personable guy with the Gene I first clapped eyes on on the back cover of Leave Scars in 1989. To be fair, most of the band members looked pretty intimidating but I particularly remember thinking, of Gene, that I wouldn't have wanted to meet him down a dark alley! Couldn't have been more wrong in that assessment. What an an absolute gentleman and master of his craft he is. Just a top bloke. Thank you for this interview; the 45 minutes felt more like 5 in his company.
In my humble opinion the topic of Fear Factory is a mess and even more controversial and divisive than for example Sepultura or Pantera or other bands you could name. As a young death metal drummer Raymond Herrera was one of my favourites and his drumming was such an pioneering integral iconic part of the Fear Factory sound, that could only later could be replicated by others. While Hoglan is probably the most legendary and greatest metal drummer ever and Mechanise is a good album with Hoglan being there personally it felt like something was missing and FF were jumping on the Hoglan bandwagon. Damn shame.
My dude! Saw them on that tour at Trent Poly, the Notts crowd were nuts & taking the piss, ‘who ate all the pies’ kinda shit and Gene fronted the whole place on the Mike, had us all laughing within seconds. Top bloke, true legend.
I love how he speaks so naturally without an excessive amount of hums and youknows. He's very well spoken and tells stories without getting lost in details. The most interesting drummer that has ever lived.

That was what I wanted, not to be famous, but to be a respected studio guy. Obviously my dream never panned out. I ended up joining the Navy pretty much just so I could survive and ended up doing 20 years. I never stopped playing, but it was just hobby I love and no longer a career goal. I have loved Gene since the 80's, but the joy I felt when Metalocolypse/Dethklok came out and I found that Brendan and Gene were the main song writers was huge (were the fuck is season 4 already)!
Gene is one of my idols. A complete icon, legend, and awesome dude. Thank you for all the great music and so excited to see him in Portland this summer with Death to All!
Wow, this was incredible. Gene Hoglan has always been one of my favorite drummers and it's great to hear him shed some light on these amazing projects. Speaking of, if you haven't heard the Mechanism album Horrific Inspired with him drumming, check it out!! Hall of the Gods especially; the drumming, riffing and vocals are off the hook \m/
What a great interview. He's such a cool guy. Can't wait for another project with him behind the kit. Maybe another Galaktikon? All the best to you Gene!
Love you Gene, thanks for all you've done (and will continue to do well into your 70s, looking fantastic, does my heart good). Very much looking forward to the future!
Chuck used tapes... I still do. Even for album recordings, sometimes, running things through an old tape deck, really ads that old school sound... Band mates though, thinks i'm mad when i bring my guitar riff tapes ;)
Cool interview. I never knew much about Gene growing up because I didn't know about his early bands until I got older. Easily one of the best drummers in the top tier of talent. He seems like a chill and humble guy. Strapping Young Lad was first time I heard him back in 2005. He's killer!
His work with Brendon Small is epic. I have the Galaktikon album on a disc that is in my car right now. Solid guy, top of the food chain drummer and musician. Just having Gene on your channel is worth a like and sub on it's own
I think what makes this interesting is Gene has played (and had a significant impact) on many iconic metal records from many different groups. A lot of the guys you’ve mentioned are awesome, but have been in only one or two major bands their entire careers. It would just be them talking about their own bands for 30 minutes or so. Could still be interesting, but this is cool because Gene not only has stories about himself, but about so many other iconic metal musicians.
You are my favorite drummer . Met you in Detroit on the individual thought patterns tour. I too love Scott Burns. Really good guy. Got email recently and sent him some updates on my old band. He was a really great person to work with in Tampa.
This is GREAT!!! I’m really enjoying listening to Gene discuss the DNA of all these albums/bands, etc. Mr. Hoglan is a highly intelligent, articulate person who seems to be well-read and self-educated in “everything Music.” Thanks for doing this interview and giving it away to us for free!!!
I first saw Gene play on the Scars tour. I grew up in Florida when the punk scene was fading and the metal scene was taking off and got to see all those bands. It was a great time.
I have to watch this whole video again to write down all the titles , bands etc. of what Gene has been on. This guy is a walking drumming encyclopedia. Just WOW!!!!
Well-spoken, chilled out, incredibly knowledgable and god tier metal drummer. Could listen to this man talk drums and music all day.
100%
I totally agree. He seems super cool. I've heard his drumming throughout the years and it's cool to hear him talk.
Guy is the king. So glad I got to meet him around 2007 at a Misery Signals show. So happy to see him looking so healthy and happy, still!
@@dovkushnir7808 the “Gene Slimmons” Nick name made me laugh!!!! I’m definitely going to look into those super foods he talks about and recommends.

Such a laid back guy. Opeth be like "hey, we sent our drummer home for reasons, can you play?", and he's like "sure thing, lol".
Gene seems like such a genuine and kind person but is the most metal drummer in the world. Sheesh, what a discography.

Gene looking better than ever!
He really is I'm glad for him hopefully he added years to his life losing weight and taking care of himself
Was thinking the same, he looks so good these days, healthiest he's ever looked. So great to see for such a good dude.
He’s looking in so much better shape than he used to!
Totally. I am happy for him. He has to feel better.
Saw him drumming for Strapping Young Lad for their ‘City’ tour. Scared the absolute shit outta me. Absolutely terrifyingly talented dude

What a fucking legend this guy is, it's great to see how healthy he is too. Very much looking forward to seeing what he does in the future
What a chill dude! Ultra talent, one of the best ever but very down to earth. Inspiring.
This guys drumming ability taste and I.q is unparalleled ' great musician
What a great interview. He's such a cool guy. Can't wait for another project with him behind the kit. Maybe another Galaktikon? All the best to you Gene!
I love that he calls Laser Canon Deth Sentence one of his hardest songs!
He looks like a such a chill and cool dude….with lots of wisdom and yet not arrogant at all….
Love you Gene, thanks for all you've done (and will continue to do well into your 70s, looking fantastic, does my heart good). Very much looking forward to the future!
What a pleasure to listen to Gene talk metal history ,Horns up !
Great retrospective concept, keep ‘em coming !
His work with Brendon Small is epic. I have the Galaktikon album on a disc that is in my car right now. Solid guy, top of the food chain drummer and musician. Just having Gene on your channel is worth a like and sub on it's own
Fantastic interview. Gene is the man! I could listen to him talk metal/drums all day.
A great interview by Gene of some great music history, Well done 🤘😎🤘
Absolutely love Gene and his playing, he's an inspiration... such a cool guy.
Gene individual thought patterns is a master piece!!
I'd love to see this format done with other bands like Annihilator's Jeff Waters, Bobby Rondinelli, Gary Holt, Dave Lombardo or even Vinny Appice
@@Kwert perfectly stated
Right on. I started my metal listening with slayer & dark angel, megadeth... nice work man. Peace
Saw him with Dethklok. Incredible stamina and timing to a fully sync'd show. Didn't miss a beat. What a badass!
The Atomic Clock himself. Love his drumming! Thank yall!
I love the way he says “I can bring that” 😂😂
An absolute legend
I have to watch this whole video again to write down all the titles , bands etc. of what Gene has been on. This guy is a walking drumming encyclopedia. Just WOW!!!!
