Or a Barbarian. I mean, the Barbarian will still take the damage, but they'll have advantage on the save, at least, and depending on their path, they may even have resistance to whatever damage does get through. And they should have enough HP to soak it. I've lost track of how many times I've invited the wizard to target my half-orc barbarian with a fireball.
Two words:

Lol it's a clerical thing, it always gets a laugh, Oskar doesn't usually touch himself he is more interested in laying hands on others..... Except for the paladin, he's like, mm hmm I got this and goes ahead and touches himself although he is limited to a few times a day.

@@Arkatox With enough space, even fireball can be placed upon a single target. Being the op spell it is, ofcourse you would try to fit it every time it's possible. He really thought it was not going to hit his allies based on Matts description but there were misconceptions about the reality of the situations

VisseNekku a running fact from campaign 1 was the Scanlan the bards genitalia was a perfect 1.5x1.5 inch cube, a very respectable size for a gnome

Whenever I watch a Critical Role related video, it puts a smile on my face. A completely involuntary reaction. Could I be charmed? Did Laura did this? Noooo, she wouldn't, would she? I think I should check the range on Charm Person; just in case.

i completely concur, though it is something to point out that that is a modified distance from taking Eldritch Spear (Warlock Invocation) and Spell Sniper (Feat) but doing that makes you the DnD equivalent of Artillery........ which is no bad thing at all for making sure your enemies stay a "polite" distance away :D
Or 1200ft if you dip 3lvls Sorcerer for distant spell. At which point your DM says „you hit an enemy 3 maps over there“
@@redskin23100 By that point you can kill nearly anything that isn't a boss before they get into your range. You'll also exclusively be in narrow tunnels at that point.

Phrasing
Also a note with cubes and spheres:
The point of origin for spheres is in the middle of the sphere, like you would expect. BUT the point of origin for cubes is on one of the cube's sides.
So if you want to cast Thunderwave, which deals damage to all enemies in a cube centring on you, you can only use it to damage enemies in front of you - The cube only stretches out in front of you, so enemies behind you aren't included. And, like said in the video, for cubes the point of origin isn't included in the spell, so you're safe.

These videos are great materials. I run a campagin with about 8players or so and they love the vids. keep up the great content! Helps to explain things in a practical way people can understand.

This has been my favorite HBH so far Haha Laura makes it so fun
A nice little video for spell effects. I dig it, well done. Two things, if I may... 1. When in doubt on whether or not you will engulf your friends or allies in a spells AoE, ask your DM for help. Most DMs will assist you in proper spell placement so that you don't roast your friends. 2. Always hoping that the Sorcerer "Careful" metamagic will be fixed someday to fully protect friends and allies... that, would be most groovy! :)
There are also handy dandy Spell Effect aides, like our transparent plastic pieces. These let you see the Area of Effect of a spell, and written in the edge is the Range, and other rules you may like to reference.
Although I kind of missed proper visual aid in the line of a battlemap examples. I do have to admit that you couldn't have communicated it more clearly and with the any less flair that one is accustomed to from the critical role cast. Its one of those topics most players and game masters stumble over and I hope this helps, thanks a bunch Laura Bailey you were the perfect person to simplify these rules!
It would be awesome if you include some examples of what you're saying with CR clips at the end! I love this series btw!

Always trust a player to abuse a mechanic in ways you did not intend for them to do so.

After hearing her voice come out of various characters my whole life it feels weird to see it actually come from a live person.
what did we do to deserve the wonder and glory, that is Laura Bailey? this little AoE guide was lovely, very informative. on CR, her out-of-character banter's often funny or brilliantly strategic (or both) and I love all the joy, chaos, and (occasionally very moving) complexity she brings with Jester. I can't wait to see what happens next with her, and this is a character I don't think I'll ever forget!
Laura does a great job on explaining and so did whoever added those effects. They seemed especially sharp this time.

I ran a dwarf wizard one... 18 Str, Con and Int after modifiers. Wielding a warhammer and chain shirt. It was wonderful... Especially after Tenser's Transfomation. :)
Alison Wonderland - My god... I hope your DM was one’a those that “enjoys a challenge”. Especially past lvl 10(depending on edition) and endgame(if your Dwarven Muscle Wizard made it(just gonna go ahead and assume they did)).

I just love stepping into a room as my sorcerer and saying to the paladin "hold my beer" while casting fireball.
Although if it comes down to it make it something that will hurt as many enemies and as few allies as possible when it causes damage. Sometimes you need to nuke and pray your fellow party members can save.
Always center the fireball on that rogue that has evasion, they will probably make the save! Or be punished for stealing from the party.

DMG 251:
The area of effect of a spell, monster ability, or other feature must be translated onto squares or hexes to determine which potential targets are in the area and which aren't.
Choose an intersection of squares or hexes as the point of origin of an area of effect, then follow its rules as normal. If an area of effect is circular and covers at least half a square, it affects that square.

It's good to also note that spells do not have two ranges like other weapons do in D&D. No Medium or Long Range, just Spell Range.

kinda surprised they didnt mention that area of effect is also called a AOE for short. or a spell that originates from ur self to be a PBAOE or point black area of effect
The one thing that matters the most isn't really touched upon lol. How does one effectively use a 5yr cube spell? Does it only ever affect one enemy due to how movement works or can you overlap cubes to damage multiple spaces? Does that damage then get divided based on how much of a cube is covered? etc.

Very useful ability, even though the way they phrase it in the Player's Handbook took me ages to figure out what it actually meant.
Also one of my favorite tidbits . Glass is full cover. You can't target a spell on some one who is behind glass
