      Tried that once, the DM quite reasonably responded by having it spit out the offending chunk of metal - a sword in our case - after a couple of rounds. Even cubes have some basic survival instincts. Fine by us anyway, we wanted the sword for a patron way more than we wanted the cube dead.

      Ever since I heard of how versatile they are in 5th edition I have wanted to see a party of all bards. A while back I found a gaming webcomic that had a party of all clerics that steamrolled a high level module so a party of the same class, but different enough builds sounds fun- and compared to 3.5 clerics, 5e bards aren't so powerful that this would be broken. But with this video I realized you could have an entire campaign revolve around a band of bards that go and have adventures, which may or may not include asasinations, while under cover as simple musicians.

      That depends on the thickness of the metal, with thicker stock taking longer to cool because, well, physics. Warmer weather can also assist slightly.
      For example, if you get 1 inch stock steel to 2200 degrees you can have a good minute of hammering sometimes before it loses its cherry red color.

Same with chain mail, you'd typically have a gambeson or an arming shirt under your mail coat or shirt, and I'd imagine it wouldn't take long to grab the mail and pull it off yourself, at the expense of a few bad burns on the cheeks, but still better than cooking. But overall there are a lot of variables that could be called into question with this spell.

If it slides on like modern prosthetics and is not bolted on, quickly detaching the metal arm might save the NPC. That said, asking those questions about the arm would probably make your DM very suspicious.

This let the fighter add the spell's damage to his attacks. Then he got a magic sword that let him imbue his breath weapon damage (he was a copper dragonborn) into it instead of breathing it like normal. Acid breath buff + heat metal buff = napalm coated magic greatsword. It was badass.

      I actually think's it's a neat add to the potential of Buff from Druid and Bard (mainly druid). I would reduce the Buff to 1d8, or 2d8 if the wielder take a disadvantage (choice of the caster) because the Elemental Weapons, a level 3 spell offer only 1d4 damage and +1 to attack. I would also probalby only allow it if the weapon is usable in this state : a spear, greataxe or maul, a Rapier, Arrows, etc. A sword might be abit much

A true neutral character may be in a situation where they feel that a murderous rampage is in order one week, but calm down the next, at which point you probably can't even tell the difference between them, and some random good, or lawful aligned character, in that order. Think draugr from skyrim). I threw my dagger at it. I hit a very high hit (like unnatural 20+) Barely any damage and I lost my dagger. Everyone thought it was a pointless attack. Next round. I asked my dm if the dagger would be stuck inside his body. The DM debated for a bit and said that because I hit so high it likely would have been flying so fast that it would be stuck right in it. Like an arrow getting lodged deep.
    I smirk. "I cast heat metal on my dagger."
    Even better, since it wasn't like being held or worn, but was legitimately stuck inside of it, for several rounds the DM rolled to try and pull it out.

    I played a campaign where I, the bard, spearheaded technological advancement by using heat metal for purifying water and reshaping metal to make functional piping.
    Eventually developing to quality cooking, warm baths and of course, like any fun bard would, made lead hcl batteries to produce a power source and introduce artificial lighting to my medeival world.
    Steam power is neat. This developed into proper chemistry and healthcare improvement was pretty amazing by combining rudimentary meds with magic.
    Greenhouses were easily sustained with the right heating
    We used gem magic by farming pealrs to store casts to lightly automate things, created quality tools and began advancing infrastructure.
    Eventually we got a hold of portal magic, combining it with falling water, steam and to a degree rivers to create local perpetual motion.
    With the invention of our steam powered printing press we rapidly expanded our reach and notoriety.
    Then the campaign died.

    Fun fact, almost all objects glow certain colors at certain temperatures regardless of what the material is. The spell describes the metal as glowing red specifically, which means you can argue that it heats objects to anywhere between 1300°F and 1800°F. Now, that's not hot enough to melt steel but it absolutely is hot enough to melt many other metals, like brass, aluminum, lead, silver, and zinc, among others. So Heat Metal can absolutely melt some objects completely - bullets for slings were commonly lead, door hinges were also sometimes lead, and silver coins are very commonplace. Do with that what you will!!

      yeah, I've thought about using this, with a couple casters targeting one player character. Since it doesn't state that you can only do it with one caster on one target. So stack like 3 or 4 lower level casters and have them "heat metal" on the same target. So like 6-8 D8 per turn. And since it takes like 10 minutes to remove heavy armor ... wellllll

    • @criyofreeze
      @criyofreeze 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I think it says in the spellcasting section that a character cannot be under the effect of the same spell twice (for example, can't have 2 hastes cast on you). It could be argued the same applies for this spell on the armor, or that having multiple casts of heat metal doesn't increase it's temperature since the spell might only heat it to a certain degree. Not trying to start something, just got me thinking.

    • @mosesfox52

      @@criyofreeze I'll have to go back and check and look for the actual rule, however the heat metal doesn't deal damage till someone uses their bonus action to deal it. So it can be "heated" for a couple turns but if they don't use the bonus action it doesn't deal the 2d8 damage. So it would just be a dog pile of bonus action uses and their main actions are still open for other spells. I'll have to look for the actual rule though and make sure it's legit.

    As a person that has worn armor and fought with melee weapons (swords mace etc) My biggest problem with the spell is, even if you are using an item made of metal you are usually not in contact with the metal. Especially weapons. Plate armor? You have a gambeson, aketon, padded jack, pourpoint or arming doublet, every weapon in My collection has either a thick leather wrap grip or wooden grip. SO, in My games the bard trying to use heat metal as a cure all in every combat scene quickly gets disappointed when it's not nearly as affective as they want it to be.

    • @marcosalmeida3947
      @marcosalmeida3947 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I have little to no experience with armor, but the mixture of culinary adventures and a high pain tolerance made me learn firsthand why cheap, thin mittens are a trap. If something's hot enough, you don't have to touch it directly to cause first degree burns. Also wet mittens/traps actually cause worse burns.
      I don't know if that's the intention, but to me the spell's damage is less "frying pan" and more "electric oven". There's no way "glowing hot metal" only causes 2d8 damage.

    • @Shovel________________
      @Shovel________________ 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      i mean if metal is red hot its still gonna burn through gambeson pretty easily, or whatever else you put under armor. if there's a wooden grip, i'd imagine you'd still feel the heat from under the handle, especially if its only a leather grip

      In a D&D world magical healing probably replaces such things for those rich enough- But there is no reason you can't PUT metal into someone- ie cast heat metal after another party member fires arrows with metal arrowheads. Especially practical for using this general strategy against monsters that don't wear armor, have the party use arrows, javelins and similar to hit it at range and then cook and book until it dies from the red hot metal embeded in itself.
      In the other direction, the spell doesn't say anything about what KIND of metal, so with a cooperative DM you can get nasty with metal that melts into liquid when it gets red hot- like gold, so a rich target with jewelry has molten metal burning into their flesh, which could be even harder to get off than plate armor.
      Or it could be a way for a DM to discorage such tactics, IE- "you can turn all of the noble's metal into sources of fire damage, but then you melt the loot and wreck its value" because not only is the value of jewelry in the craftsmanship as well as the materials but good luck recovering all the bits of melted gold seared into the corpse of your victim
