That's correct, the writer made more than just the "torpedo" error. My first ever character was petrified when my party and I were in the big bad final battle. I was the cleric and the only healer. I turned to stone fairly quickly.
Slightly important distinction: ranged attacks vs prone target. It's a distance based thing, not a weapon based thing. If you are 5ft away from a prone opponent, you attack with advantage. Longsword, crossbow, whatever. However, making a ranged attack while adjacent to a hostile creature imposes disadvantage. So unless they are incapacitated, unconscious or asleep, the disadvantage and advantage would cancel each other out and you would make a straight roll. Recently, I had some players attacking a sleeping opponent, and I learned this.
To add to this, the 5 ft rule also means that attacking a prone creature with a reach melee weapon from 10 feet away is also at disadvantage (and doesn't get you a crit against paralysed/unconscious creatures either)
Very nice video! There is one rule mistake I noticed. Any attack against a prone enemy has advantage within 5ft. So if you attacked with a crossbow within 5ft of a prone enemy, you would have advantage from the prone effect. You would also have disadvantage for performing a ranged attack next to a hostile creature. So overall it would be a straight roll. Also, all attacks made greater than 5ft have disadvantage. So if you attacked with a melee weapon that has reach from 10ft away, you would have disadvantage
To be fair..... Being an undead minion is rather tiresome. You never sleep, its always kill those intruders or dont let those pesky adventurers get out of my tomb alive!.... Even in death does ones duty continue.
what I really like about these is it makes watching the show more understandable. I can use context clues when they get/give conditions and most are logically but it’s nice knowing what they are actually are.
Bloody hell! In my last game my dm gave me TWO levels of exhaustion NONE of this was explained! If I'd known I wouldn't have gone beyond level 1! In that game I was cut down when one of the spellcasters firebolted my character in the back and they had to use a potion to get my character back on her feet. My DM is probably reading this right now!
@@leavemealone247 My good fortune is that my DM clearly wasn't aware of the rules for exhaustion! But I do now! I expect too much from these games is my problem but its nice to get that off my chest and get the advice I need to get over this. Thank you by the way!
Unmentioned details: *Blinded/Invisible* - Creatures will still know the location of enemies even when they can't see that enemy, unless that enemy has taken the Hide action. - If you think you can bypass the disadvantage by casting a spell that requires a save from the target, note that many spells require you to be able to see the target. *Charmed* - When you charm an enemy, that enemy is still able to attack your friends. A successful persuasion or intimidation (which you get adv on) would be needed to end hostilities. *Exhaustion* - You can only take 1 long rest every 24 hours, so no sleeping all day to remove 3 levels. *Grappled* - When you use an action to try to escape a grapple, you can choose either Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) to contest their Strength (Athletics) check. *Incapacitated* - Also causes you to drop concentration on any spells. - Does not prevent movement, although most often used in tandem with other conditions that do prevent movement. - You do not suffer disadvantage on ranged attack rolls if you are within 5 ft of an enemy that is incapacitated. *Paralyzed* - Any attack within 5 ft that hits is a critical hit, including ranged attacks, which do not suffer from disadvantage because target is incapacitated. - Spells that don't require an attack roll cannot crit, so will also not auto-crit. *Poisoned* - Casting spells that don't require an attack roll are not affected. *Prone* - Dropping prone willingly is free, although you need to be able to move. - Getting up, attacking without disadvantage and dropping prone again afterwards is a good tactic if there are no enemies able to get within 5 ft of you. - Ranged attacks within 5 ft get advantage against a prone target, but are also at a disadvantage unless the target is incapacitated, which results in a normal roll. - Attacking a prone target 10 ft away with a melee reach weapon will have disadvantage. *Unconscious* - Any sleeping creature is considered unconscious.
I play a Tiefling Druid/Warlock multiclass (she died and was resurrected by a nature spirit demon-type entity so she felt like she had to work with said entity after that and became a Warlock to them) and actually played her as such from the very start (I took her from an old campaign to a new one with a new group) and even though I've played her for a while, this video was still very dang helpful! Currently binging the series and I love it ♡♡♡
5:05 If you read the book text for *prone* condition, it does not mention *melee* or *ranged* attacks, just the distance! > "An attack roll against the creature has advantage if the attacker is within 5 feet of the creature. Otherwise, the attack roll has disadvantage" Correct me if I'm wrong, and overlooked some other ruling; But this is how I run these special scenarios: A *melee* attack on prone creatures will have disadvantage if the attacker decides to use the "reach" of a melee weapon / ability, attacking with disadvantage if attacked from 10ft+. A *ranged* attack on a prone creature within 5ft is rolled as *normal* (advantage from prone condition, but disadvantage on ranged because of 'ranged attacks in close combat rule'), unless the enemy 5ft within you is incapacitated.
So at 12:01, she does call the show "Hamburger Helper" instead of "Handbooker Helper" right? and no one caught it on staff? intentional? flub?? fatigue setting in? lol. hmm... great video, love Marsha, Laird, and Tarvis and the whole Crucial Roll crew... especially the DM, that Mark Mercy. Hehe. but joking aside, love these shorts.. the Caleb callback in the Charmed segment was priceless..
8:12. Thecnically, when you're unconscious, any hit from an attacker that are within 5 ft. auto-crits regardless of whether or not the attack was a melee or ranged attack.
Oh no the firbolg druid is dying!! D8 Gotta say the edits and doodles on this episodes are so on point. Kudos to the artist and the editors! (Also Marisha you are awesome for all these 12 minutes of my life and please go get some rest)
6:11 Important note missed under Grappled, you can defend against a grapple attempt with a Dexterity based Acrobatics check, and of course wriggle free from it with said Acrobatics check. E.g. your noodle armed rogue is not entirely screwed if they get grappled.
Being petrified saved me from being dusted by a disintegrate beam from a beholder :D also the removing of one exhaustion from raising dead that was from an errata so makes reviving easier ... because before that you couldn't do that you had to use higher magic.
Fun fact abt Blinded and Invisible: Attacks against creatures you can't see? Disadvantage. Attacks against creatures who can't see you? Advantage! So if you're both in pitch black darkness (without darkvision), all your attacks are made as a normal roll, because neither of you can actually see eachother! though this is where it gets tricky if you're playing on a grid; half of the challenge of fighting opponents you can't see is guessing where they're standing. Also, if you are hidden, creatures cannot see you, meaning attacks you make are done with advantage. You can hide using the Hide action to make a Stealth check when you are heavily obscured (behind a wall, entirely covered by fog, etcetc). So, if you're behind a wall (full cover)? You can step out, shoot an arrow or two with advantage, step back behind cover and, if you're a rogue of at least 2nd level, take the Hide action as a bonus action to kindasorta disappear again. If a creature has no idea you're there, you only have to beat their passive Perception on your Stealth check. If they've recently seen you, or have reason to suspect you're in the room, though, they can likely take the Search action to make a Perception or Investigation check to find you. If you've recently shot arrows at them tho, the DM could view this as reason to give the creature advantage or a full on auto-success on sussing out where you are.
Also, since you have to spend movement to stand up; funny thing abt grapple! If you grapple a creature that is prone, they can't get up! And so you and all your friends have advantage on curb stomping the poor bugger!
Some corrections: - Potion of Vitality removes "any exhaustion you are suffering", not just one level. - Breaking Grapple or Restraint is usually a contest between Grappler's Strength (Athlethics) ability check, and the Grappled's Strength (Athletics) OR Dexterity (Acrobatics) check.
Always be careful of how you say attacks against paralyzed and unconscious creatures auto crit. The attack roll still has to be made and if it hits, it is a critical. Attack hits from within five feet on an unconscious or paralyzed creature are crits. The attack still has to hit in the first place. Of course house rules always override, but the default rules say that the attack roll still has to be made.
The explaination was really helpful to me thanks so much. I was curious if Dragon-born were ever explained because I've had this character idea for a while now but i'm not exactly sure how to play one.

hahahahahaha 2:30 beau "you're not my type" lionett has no patience for caleb's charmed shenanigans
A wild Dani appears!!!!
thanks for this you guys, was trying to figure out the difference between grappled and restrained in my last session haha
Thank you for this one Marisha taking one for the team on this long conditions journey
My first ever character was petrified when my party and I were in the big bad final battle.
I was the cleric and the only healer. I turned to stone fairly quickly.
This was great! Thank you Marisha ^-^
Marisha is stunning
And so is her character this campaign.
Doc Nevyn i see what u did there
Both of you get a Strike for that one.
@@docnevyn5814 GDI Doc. That was a sneak pun
n4l9bx looks like I failed my stealth check
Thanks so much Marisha! This will definitely be hand(bookerhelper?)y to show my players if/when (definitely when) these effects come up in game
No, I just realized, when you're brought back to life, you're at lv5 exhaustion
'Not even death can cure you of your exhaustion' - all of us Chronic Fatigue Syndrome sufferers - "Yeah, figures."
12:00 I feel so convinced that she said Hamburger Helper... but I hear just a bit of Handbooker helper....
*Suing Intensifies*
That's it for today's episode of hamburger helper!
Ten people are unconscious without a Dani to catch them.
(They may also be affected by magic rock brain.)
Loved it! Marisha you were fantastic!!
To be fair..... Being an undead minion is rather tiresome. You never sleep, its always kill those intruders or dont let those pesky adventurers get out of my tomb alive!.... Even in death does ones duty continue.
Support your local Skeleton Union.
@@tomisabum magically reanimated soulless beings dont really have the free-will to form a union.
what I really like about these is it makes watching the show more understandable. I can use context clues when they get/give conditions and most are logically but it’s nice knowing what they are actually are.
All episodes of HBH should've been hosted by Marisha, honestly.
Unmentioned details:
*Blinded/Invisible*
- Creatures will still know the location of enemies even when they can't see that enemy, unless that enemy has taken the Hide action.
- If you think you can bypass the disadvantage by casting a spell that requires a save from the target, note that many spells require you to be able to see the target.
*Charmed*
- When you charm an enemy, that enemy is still able to attack your friends. A successful persuasion or intimidation (which you get adv on) would be needed to end hostilities.
*Exhaustion*
- You can only take 1 long rest every 24 hours, so no sleeping all day to remove 3 levels.
*Grappled*
- When you use an action to try to escape a grapple, you can choose either Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) to contest their Strength (Athletics) check.
*Incapacitated*
- Also causes you to drop concentration on any spells.
- Does not prevent movement, although most often used in tandem with other conditions that do prevent movement.
- You do not suffer disadvantage on ranged attack rolls if you are within 5 ft of an enemy that is incapacitated.
*Paralyzed*
- Any attack within 5 ft that hits is a critical hit, including ranged attacks, which do not suffer from disadvantage because target is incapacitated.
- Spells that don't require an attack roll cannot crit, so will also not auto-crit.
*Poisoned*
- Casting spells that don't require an attack roll are not affected.
*Prone*
- Dropping prone willingly is free, although you need to be able to move.
*Unconscious*
- Any sleeping creature is considered unconscious.
@Follow the howl This better?
Marry me! ...Oh wait ...Mercer....both of you marry me!!

@@000Krim What is this suddenly? Lol.
MOOD
I play a Tiefling Druid/Warlock multiclass (she died and was resurrected by a nature spirit demon-type entity so she felt like she had to work with said entity after that and became a Warlock to them) and actually played her as such from the very start (I took her from an old campaign to a new one with a new group) and even though I've played her for a while, this video was still very dang helpful! Currently binging the series and I love it ♡♡♡
I love it when Marisha does these. Her comedic delivery is my favorite thing
5:05 If you read the book text for *prone* condition, it does not mention *melee* or *ranged* attacks, just the distance!
> "An attack roll against the creature has advantage
if the attacker is within 5 feet of the creature.
Otherwise, the attack roll has disadvantage"
Correct me if I'm wrong, and overlooked some other ruling; But this is how I run these special scenarios:
A *melee* attack on prone creatures will have disadvantage if the attacker decides to use the "reach" of a melee weapon / ability, attacking with disadvantage if attacked from 10ft+.
A *ranged* attack on a prone creature within 5ft is rolled as *normal* (advantage from prone condition, but disadvantage on ranged because of 'ranged attacks in close combat rule'), unless the enemy 5ft within you is incapacitated.
"Because you have magic rock brain now"
I feel called out...
Should have used one of Travis’ “Nope” pictures during the “frightened” condition bit... 😃
This one was... actually helpful. Great job guys,Liked.
You know Marisha is truly brain pooped after she finally says hamburger helper. Poor lass had to cover a lot ;-;
"...these 15 conditions."
(CRASH)
"TEN! 10 conditions! "
What movie is that from?
_Mel brooks' history of the world?_
Oh my !!! Never have I ever wanted there to be memes born out of something as much as this ! almost every caption can be turned into something
"Your party members are battered and exhausted of resources"
Looks at Fjord
When homebrewing, this is my favorite flavor review! Thank you Handbooker Helper
she said "that excuses today episode of hamburger helper"
Another positive to being petrified: You don't age when you're stone. :D
Very informative and very funny. Great job Marisha!
I just love it how they use @ItsDaniCarr as the RESTRAINED/HUG Machine.
At 12:00, Marisha calls the show "Hamburger Helper."
We all knew this time would come eventually.
Cannot unhear.
This one was most excellent. ❤️
torpedo inducing venom sounds OP AF, especially when fighting underwater..
7:53 : Stuff of nightmares.
3:41 I’ve studied this condition for my Ravenloft adventures.
I researched races, subclasses, and spells for mechanics and thematics.
8:12. Thecnically, when you're unconscious, any hit from an attacker that are within 5 ft. auto-crits regardless of whether or not the attack was a melee or ranged attack.
Oh no the firbolg druid is dying!! D8
Gotta say the edits and doodles on this episodes are so on point. Kudos to the artist and the editors! (Also Marisha you are awesome for all these 12 minutes of my life and please go get some rest)
I was hit with the exhaustion effect 20+ years ago. Still getting hit with it! Please send a Cleric...
didn't Grog have magic rock brain anyway :P
Well, he had Stone's Endurance... And was rock hard most of the time... SO!..
Animations are so good in this one!
Oboro teaching us about status effects...love it so much
6:11 Important note missed under Grappled, you can defend against a grapple attempt with a Dexterity based Acrobatics check, and of course wriggle free from it with said Acrobatics check.
E.g. your noodle armed rogue is not entirely screwed if they get grappled.
Being petrified saved me from being dusted by a disintegrate beam from a beholder :D
also the removing of one exhaustion from raising dead that was from an errata so makes reviving easier ... because before that you couldn't do that you had to use higher magic.
Fun fact abt Blinded and Invisible:
Attacks against creatures you can't see?
I'm still waiting for the condition Angry.
11:59 - And this time, she totally said "hamburger."
Some corrections:
- Potion of Vitality removes "any exhaustion you are suffering", not just one level.
Amazing video as always!
The explaination was really helpful to me thanks so much. I was curious if Dragon-born were ever explained because I've had this character idea for a while now but i'm not exactly sure how to play one.
I really needed this one
Matt really needs this one lol.
