No. City cars are the best city cars. SUVs are good for suburbs and driving around the growing large family in comfort, while perhaps towing the family trailer. Anything other than that, they are horribly compromised. Hate the things.
Well you don't live in London obviously. Otherwise you would know that best city car here is big SUV like this X5 or Ranger Rover, etc. Or at least that what London councils want you to buy. Tiny car will die in no time together with your back running over those crazy stupid things that they call "speedbumps" - things that lower your speed for good in your Smart ;)
BeefPlays I can imagine that also being good for rosd trips. I live in Aussie too and would love to explore the outback, but for some reason I feel my 1.2 Fiat wouldn't make it to Alice!
Supreme Etnel It must just be a figure that stuck in his head. There is a previous video with this X5 and I seem to remember him saying it in that one as well.
The official ECE weight is 2.185 kg, incl. 75 kg for driver and luggage. The total allowed weight (inclusive max. luggage) is 3.030 kg. But yes, I do agree with you, it's an amazing car. Driving the PHEV version (xDrive40e) has changed my way of driving: much more relaxed, sticking to the speed limit, ... It's an amazing experience. And yes, it is big. Some parking houses are a "challenge". But I love this car for it's comfort and silence!
Yes! I have exact same opinion and experience with SUVs! 10 years or so back, my father had old X5 and I drove e46 - same street, same neighbour, 2 completely different reactions when we would pass each other and when my father, in his X5 would. I thought, it must be because my father is older then me and this neighbour respects him due to his age or whatnot. However, when I drove father's X5, I got the exact same reaction like my father did. He would stop and wait for me to pass before he continuing.
consolence s as an illiterate American you should sit and learn the difference of your and you're, so you won't get schooled by someone whose English is not his main language People like you are the reason Americans have a bad reputation
Keep talking like that, little boy, until you offend some psycho who will dedicate time, money, and energy to find where you live and teach you a very scary lesson. Of course, when he does eventually find you, you will proceed to cry and call for your mommy to come save your sorry 8-year-old ass, but then it'll be all too late. So take my advice and don't offend the psychos. Now go back to playing minecraft. lol
I must disagree, people movers (MPVs, minivans, whatever) are the best. SUV drive me crazy, because the reason you get an SUV, which is inferior to a people mover in all ways but speed, is to go off-roading, that why they're tall and have ground clearance, and it doesn't take a genius to know that most SUVs nowadays aren't even capable at going off-road (X6, Esclade, Model X to name a few), and those that are (Range Rover, G-Wagon, Grand Cherokee) aren't taken off-road. A people mover is as big as an SUV, but is far more spacious due to there being no flux ground clearance, in a people mover all the space that is taken up by an SUV is used. Station wagons also answer the call better than SUVs, they have similar interior space to an SUV, but are smaller outside due to no ground clearance, and are actually faster than SUVs due to them being lighter. SUVs are outclassed in so many ways by other cars, except for certain examples of off-road capable vehicles, that it continues to boggle my mind why they are so incredibly popular
It's an opinion, one that I tend to agree with along with allot of other people that absolutely love this BMW SAV. We have the X5M with not only massive HP & TQ but massive brakes as well. Please do one of your outstanding reviews on the BMW X5M if you get the opportunity.
I have a love hate relationship with SUVs. What I love is the aquarium style interior. Feel like a duke with the size and lots of space and comfy driving straight. But I hate the driving dynamics of cornering and being slower than sedans and performance cars. Hate the body roll and they shit fuel economy
Porsche bores me. Going for sedans or mid engine super cars. Giulia QV is one I'm looking for and the 488 spyder. Daily drive I'd go for the Kia stinger
M S they are slower than Super sedans and performance cars. They hit 4 seconds and can do a faster Nurburgring time than them? Cmon I'm not born yesterday
Best City cars are elder small hatchbacks, where you have got an easy overview due to the big windows.... you only need those cameras and sensors because you can't look out of the new cars properly!
Good review. I agree SUV's are the best city cars, as I have owned over the years: hatchbacks, saloons, mpv's (full size) and small crossovers. Currently drive an auto SUV and the view is great, armchair comfort, we also often carry 7 people so in a way it is more environmentally friendly. Also, as last winter if we get lots of snow my car easily goes were many cannot mainly because of the Michelin Latitude Cross tyres i had fitted. To people saying an X5 takes up more room than any other car, it's only as long as most estate cars, visually it just looks bigger because of the height!
If I want a utility vehicle, give me an actual truck that can tow and off road if needed. If I need a city car, I want something small enough to park easily, and fuel efficient enough to keep filling every two or three days without resenting it for drinking so much fuel. Suv's are good for a pretty comfortable ride and lots of bells and whistles but not so much for anything else.
Alex, just curious: would you be able to say the same (about that deterrent aspect) if you were to drive a luxury town car, say for example the Aston Martin Cygnet?
AmielBenedict I purposely give zero respect to retards who choose to drive such ugly lumps around, get in everyone's way, obscure views ahead, and spew out particulates all over my flat.
What is wrong with you guys? Why would people purposefully want to crash into you? We don't do that in Germany. And even if there would be, don't you think changing your style of driving would improve more than changing your car?
Well, I should finished what I wrote. Car doesn't give you respect, its about how you drive, and (in Poland at least) quite a lot of SUV drivers are not really behaving like any driver should.
If that is your argument for a good city car, what about a really crummy car? One that is doesn't matter if someone hits it? Someone hits your car, you get out and say "It's all good mate, this thing is a shitbox", just like that you made a new a friend! You will also have a nice dint to remember the time you and your new friend met.
these cross over SUV-ish things seem to just be a bad compromise on everything. they can't really go off-road, which is the only upside i would see in an SUV vs a regular car. Then they have a higher center of gravity, heavier, sip more fuel, less aerodynamic, worse seating position, cramped interior compared to their size etc. I hate seeing these things (especially in towns) they make 0 sense.
Wait a minute, are people deliberately crashing into small cars and are they doing this because the insurance won't be a nightmare? Is this a thing? Has it happened to you? Is it happening to other people? WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? lol.
I think the 'hyper hatchbacks' are the best city cars. Easy to navigate throughout the city and then get it on a B road nad it's a totally different ball game
Mini John Cooper Works & Audi S1 are the best city cars. Just the right size for two adults, premium interior and more then enough power, but not too thursty.
Interesting perspective, Alex. I agree that it is practical in a city. But it just proves that cities are badly designed in that they value cars too highly. Note: I love cars, a lot. But I'm speaking from a macro perspective here.
There is another use case for lifted vehicles besides aging buyer demographics: If you want to seat a baby or toddler into the baby seat you do not need to bend down.
I drive an mb vito xlwb every day in the city and it feels much more relaxed than my e91, because i can see everything and i dont care about curbs and dents of other people hitting me. And cyclists pay more attention...
Also tractors are very good on city streets, i get it... basically an SUV is a deterrent... I can also have a "bum explosion" all over my Kia Picanto and achieve the same deterentness ;)
MrCapi55 I guess it's their last long term review. They've had it as a "real world" review. They were seeing what it's like to live with for more than like a week like most reviewers.
Don't try to justify the purchase of a huge SUV if you live inside the city of London.. It is absolutely NOT a good city car. It's huge! I drive a BMW 1 series and that's what I call a good city car. The RWD helps a lot when parking in tight places and rounding small objects. It turns on a dime. Also the peppy 2l diesel is cheap to run and really quick when you need it to be. On top of all that, it's actually a quite small car, so I can park it everywhere and not annoying other drivers. I'm sick and tired of owners with these huge monster SUVs that take up two parking spots.
Christopher - please elaborate. Why is it that you feel that way? From my perspective an SUV is a utility vehicle that can be sporty but for the most part is all about city driving. The deisel engine is high torque at low revs. Perfect for that kind of place. To be perfectly honest I don't get the SUV thing at all. I would get a wagon instead. Well it would do....Right up until everyone else is in an equally huge car, then you are right back where you started. Which according to him is how it should be because SUVs are the perfect city car. Major logic fail there. I wonder if he has even considered the environmental impact of driving a 2.5 tone diesel tank in the city, and increased congestion from their huge size, or the increased danger to cyclist and pedestrians? Sorry but this is just self-centered egotistical nonsense.

ChaosphereIX your Peugeot 108 is not really a fun car though is it.
it is if you have an empty car park and a reverse gear.
@Anonymous Heh. I drive/track a modified Alfa Romeo 155 V6 and a heavily tuned Saab Turbo. Wrong guess bud.

The best city cars are premium compacts. Mini's for example.
Rather be in an X5.
I agree; a large car is a terrible idea in a city.
It only weighs 3 tonnes if you put 850 kg in it.
That's basically how much my dick weighs.
That would explain why you have no testicles.
Sandouras do u pass out when u get an erection
yeah seriously how dumb are they? the weight is 2183kg
Still too much for a city car...
Wait what? It weighs over three tonnes?
no it definitely doesn't. My X5M weighs only around 2300kg
Liam isdeBOM Nahh... maybe some wrong saying figures
BeefPlays You have an X5M? That's awesome dude! Wish I could own a fast expensive car like that!
Cheers! The 4WD is great for acceleration, but in Australian conditions it's not really needed. RWD would be manic
BeefPlays I can imagine that also being good for rosd trips. I live in Aussie too and would love to explore the outback, but for some reason I feel my 1.2 Fiat wouldn't make it to Alice!
3 tons? Are you sure? I think you mean 2.2 tons, but who's counting? :)
stubones That would be over 6 thousands pounds. What's he thinking
Supreme Etnel

Good job we don't all think like you or we would be driving tanks around London
Or tractors..
As an American, I think it's hilarious that he thinks a BMW X5 is a big SUV.
as a European, i tink its hilarious that Americans think they need anything bigger than an X5 ;)

You can never go wrong with a BMW
Sakk 1 Yes you can! My dad's 520d returns 31.2 mpg
Arman Alam 5 series diesel is designed for the motorway not city driving
Sakk 1 So what's designed for city driving? Petrol?
Neither with Audi and Mercedes?
Not sure if this is an "SUV" but the Infiniti QX70S (Black on black) is awesome! 287kw from a 5.0ltr.
I was having a bit of thought on weather or not should I buy a SUV over a sedan, you made me happy! cheers!
Sushil Choudhari Saloons and estates are superior vehicles to SUVs
He literally turned into an American in this video.
Everyone quickly googled to see if it really does weigh 3 tonnes lol
Omg the hint in the last scene, the team are all getting mopeds !

finally you guys make review for this great car!
What can this do and a 5-series can't?
it's easier for older people to get in and out of the car. that's basically it.
tavi921 park in a parking spot lol sedans you will have a great time trying to find a parking spot in Europe the extra 2 feet makes a huge difference
oohhhhhh when do we get to find out what the new loan car is?
SUV's really? is this a soccer mum channel?
Did any body notice the look of fear and hatred the motorcyclist gave Alex at the end ?
Interesting perspective, Alex. I agree that it is practical in a city. But it just proves that cities are badly designed in that they value cars too highly. Note: I love cars, a lot. But I'm speaking from a macro perspective here.
My X5's ride quality is questionable. It probably is the run flats with 20 inch rims.
00:57 it doesn't weigh 3 tons buddy. Get your informations correctly
Calling it now: Next long-term car is a Vauxhall VIVA!
There is another use case for lifted vehicles besides aging buyer demographics:

Ok, I'm gonna call it.... An SVR? (The suv type obvs)
"OVER 3 tonnes" : ~2200kg car + full of shit driver (800kg)
best looking Sporty SUV... !! lovely...!! those wheels...!!
0:58 - WTF ARE YOU TALKING?! OVER 3t?! it’s „only“ 2185kg🤦🏼♂️
didn´t richard hammond already determine that the marauder is the perfect city car?
Over 3 tonnes??! No way.
Yep
pleaseee get the new disco
If i need to deter people from crashing into me I would just drive a tank
Motorbikes are the best city vehicle. Period.
I drive an mb vito xlwb every day in the city and it feels much more relaxed than my e91, because i can see everything and i dont care about curbs and dents of other people hitting me. And cyclists pay more attention...
yes they are
You make a good argument. But I still wouldn't have one
Also tractors are very good on city streets, i get it... basically an SUV is a deterrent... I can also have a "bum explosion" all over my Kia Picanto and achieve the same deterentness ;)
What do you mean "...our last long term film?"
MrCapi55

No, diesel SUVs can bugger off
Christopher - please elaborate.
The ones I see have way more storage, better seating and .. well not better but for my liking more fun personality. My likes should be disregarded of course.
X3 driver here. The answer is no, no they are not.
Over 3 tonnes?!
Every reason he says small cars are better city cars invalidates his reason for SUVs being the best.
so driving an SUV is basicaly just trying to look opulent and be a little bit of an ass. Tell me something I don't know about this matter :))
3 Tonnes? It's 2200 kg.
I love my 2017 BMW X5 ❤️
That logic...
plz tell me it's a Range Rover Sport.

I am merc fanboy but I just love the X5....
3 tonnes? The heaviest weighs 2.3 tonnes.
It's not 3tons
A LEVANTE :D
Audi Sq7 is the king
Tesla Model X?
Kirill Holstov Haaahaaaa, you know it's pure shit

Too bad if your best city car diesel SUV gets banned from london in the future...
if you are a sociopath, yes.
I'll bet Jaguar F-Pace for next one
Suzuki Jimny :D
Lucas Abbad lol nah betting on a Range Rover
atizeg I'd lovw that! The Jimny is the most underrated car around, people laugh at it for being to small, but it's actually incredible!

suvs are boooooriinng come on!!!
Americunts class this as a small city car
Where are your hairs????!
dafuq you're talking about? 3 tons haha.
