Do you do bees? I told you last week my husband is the reluctant spouse but he is very smart and would be the 3rd person you talked about.....I am soon 62 and Mark is 60 we have lived in the same house for 32 years and I have hated it for 32years as we are in a town were theirs alot of people related and gossip is the big thing....when our son died in our home 4 years ago there were alot of people standing out to watch Daniel being taken away but only one that sent a card and came to his funeral. I may sound a little bitter but its because I am at a breaking point with these people and now they tried to make me get rid of my chickens saying they see rats which is not true the only rats are the ones with two legs. So to get back on track here do you think its realistic at our age to want to be off grid?
@@janetcroneberger9972 If I may add my two cents. My somewhat reluctant spouse and I are moving into this direction of being self reliant and creating a homestead. I am so sorry to hear about your son. My heart goes out to you and your family. We too live in a small town but we are outside the buzz of the town and have several acres. Age has nothing to do with what you wish to do. Even folks around the same age have different abilities and drive to get to where they want to be. Look at it for your long term, If you have back, knee, or any thing else that may hinder your abilities, be sure to include that in you plans. How much land are you willing to maintain, what size animals can you handle? These are some of the things we are looking at. With both of us having bad knees, I am in the process of making our garden a raised garden. Crawling around on bad knees and not being able to get up isn't cute. Lol!! It's not a huge garden, it's manageable for us and enough to feed us, and nearby family and friends which was our plan. Do what will work for you. Bottom line be where you are happy and do what makes you happy!
There is something so calming... so real about this couple... I'm sure they will have a million subscribers in no time at all. Their interaction with one another that we see is almost biblical. The way one stops speaking when the other starts, and they are patiently sharing the platform, the calm attitudes they portray... I love watching and listening to this couple.
The ironic thing about your questions is that you don't have to be a homesteader to benefit from your videos. I'm a disabled bed bound person who is able to live my life vicariously through you rather than watching network TV. You are making what you are making but you will never know the benefits you give others, like me. Thanks so much for what you offer me.
A beautiful 42yrs you are. Some of those questions sound like trolls and jealousy of folks that wish they could. Your family has survived 2 hard yrs and are seeing the fruits of your labor. Thank you for your sharing and your level headed advice. My husband and I sold the big, beautiful suburban home. Relocated to a rural area. We love our lifestyle here. We still maintained our regular jobs (we are both nurses). Working 2-3 days a week, my husband went to part time hours and has started a Handy Man business because it is something he LOVES. He has been quite successful and we are looking to have him quit his regular job completely. For us it has been more gradual. But we are out of debt and that makes decisions so much easier. I once was a top producer earning over 6 figures had a home new cars 3 kids in childcare and private schools. Never even looked at nature always stressed out and pressured. I was unhappy and complacent. Now everything is changed not by choice but now I sing to birds, I love nature, I love myself, for the first time ever, I need for nothing,
You guys are ABSOLUTELY correct about staying home and raising your kids and teaching them HOW TO THINK and do for themselves. The lessons learned on the homestead will serve them much better no matter what their futures hold.
Saying you did this at first so your kids can learn from your videos is the most realist thing I think I ever heard a content creator say. The information and time you put into these videos HAS to be golden. We all thank you.
That's all fine and dandy but how do you keep government off your back with taxes? Vehicle insurance, registration and everything that cost real money?

If you don’t want to pay vehicle registration then don’t drive.. how do think the roads get maintained? Who pays for that? Soo many questions…

I so appreciate you addressing this income thing. Those of us that are not as far along in our off grid journey need to know what all the outlets are. As for your selling Tshirts and people having a problem with it...SHAME on them. What you do to make money (especially when it comes from followers requests) is your business and there are no limits. It's your life and it's all good.

Did you see the guy that won the Lottery? When asked what he was going to do with all that money? His reply was “he was going to farm with it until it was gone. Then go from there” lol Anyone from a farm background knows just how real that answer is.
I am homesteading on 65 acres in the heart of the Missouri Ozarks. I call it the "Gentle Karma Farm". My old "city" friends look at my lifestyle and think I've lost my mind. Let's just say my definition of "normal" has considerably changed. What I appreciate most about your videos is that you have real knowledge to share and you are not wasting my time trying to be "cute". Now that technology has made it possible to shoot videos of ourselves and post them on-line, it seems too many people now think they are TV celebrities. I don't even waste my time watching those videos. Keep up the great work, stay authentic, and "Thank you" for just being yourselves.
People have a lot of nerve when they aren't face to face with somebody or facing the consequences of what they say to somebody! Anonymity on the internet is a blessing and a curse at the same time!
I feel the questions are unfair as pertains to THEM. But... I see a lot of tiny house videos, where they spent like $150k on a tiny house, live on this amazing piece of land (mom ‘n’ dad’s?) and they’re like, “I’m a children’s book illustrator.” I wonder if “the simple life” is often a vanity project for trust funders.
I think people are just curious, I don’t think they mean the tone that’s construed, just curious as how they make it bc a lot of lower class are struggling, they are looking to go off grid bc they aren’t looking to spend much, not realizing it does cost a lot up front - or they do realize it costs a lot up front, & want to look into some of the same things other’s are doing to help them get to a comfortable place in their life too
I appreciate your honesty in this conversation, but it is very personal, so hats off to you. My hubby and I worked and saved for years from our job and now are enjoying retirement life. We got what we have by our own hard work. I've taught my sons to work hard because no one is going to hand you anything. I was a single mom for many years, and my kids don't feel entitled as so many do now. Hugs❤️
I just had a conversation with my 22 yr old son about being happy where you are with what you have. If you can do that, it doesnt matter what anyone else has. We are not wealthy, we dont have brand new cars or the latest phones and toys ... what we do have is a home that is paid off, no credit card (or any other) debt and children that have never known hunger. For me, that is an abundance of blessings.
The girls will learn a ton out on the farm or ranch , they will always recall the things they learned and have much more common sense than most of the other kids.

We worked hard our whole lives but still owed money out the wazoo. We sold the house, moved to the woods and became mortgage free. It didn't happen all at once but now 7 years on we're finally getting septic and upgrading our solar. It's not easy or instant but it's worth it.
I will never be a homesteader, but I have learned so much from watching you two that I feel I can impliment some of what you do to plan for anything that could go wrong in the world we live in. I want to create my home that will sustain myself and family. Thanks so much. Looking forward to seeing ou build your home and land.

You can grow flowers and shrubs for landscapers and local stores. We did that. It doesn't cost much and easy to sell. We started 400 pine trees and sold them for 2 dollars each. It took us two hours to collect and left them for 2 weeks to root all by themselves. Lots of ways to make money. Thin out trees selling timber. Grow berries and sell them to local stores.
You peeps talk so cool and smooth together, and finish each others sentences, without being rude and annoying to each other. Great couple should've met much earlier in life, but you just never know right.

I agree with you. My fondest childhood memories are from the times my parent's household income was extremely small. They spent 9 months in Mexico as missionaries and then came back to the states and moved to a small town that was depressed but full of nature. My best memories.

And I came across this one, and for the most part people where asking nonsense or personal and uncomfortable questions, and you guys answered great! And I appreciate that, in my opinion it is a shame that people instead of being happy for your success and the free good info that we get from your videos, have so many question than I think are somehow disrespectful. I absolutely love your comment about giving your kids what is important! Some of my happiest memories, as a child, are the 2 weeks we got to spend at my Grampa's cottage in Vermont with no electricity, and a hand pump to get our water. We spent the whole day playing in the brook, sawing the branches off of the trees that Grampa and my Dad cut down, digging in the dirt, and then at night we'd sit around the kitchen table playing cards... it was amazing and I'm grateful to have those memories! Thank you for the video, I always enjoy listening to you guys!
I cannot believe people actually asked you those questions. I congratulate you guys for answering them, but explaining whether or not you print merchandise for one, addressing questions about you guys making money or being rich. Make $$$ off your passions and skill sets, on grid and off grid if you can. Some peoples comments sounds more like envy. Wow, I wish I had money to give you guys for the fact of sharing this video that I am blessed to watch. I intend to do homestead also but hearing you address printing of tshirts were an issue...I felt awkward. I am a fashion designer who is looking to live off grid and making merchandise is one way of my source of income and You should do anything your heart desire.
One day we hope to move to out to a small farm in the mountains. I've been dealing with I.T. burnout several years. I don’t know why people want to criticize people who are off grid, for having or doing anything modern. To many people don’t seem to understand what off grid is... In my humble unsolicited opinion, people ask personal, specific questions about your finances, not because they're boorishly nosy (most of them anyway), but because they greatly admire your journey and the independence and they want that, too. The transition is big and the unknown is scary. With anonymity of the Internet, viewers can forget to be considerate.
Just found your channel, thank you for your honesty. My husband and I have been blessed, sold our house and found an off grid property, which we have purchased. We had been seriously affected by the 2008 world recession, and we were still paying a mortgage in retirement. In no way do we see our new property as an easy fix to retirement. Going from a city with all the services at our fingertips, to 1.5 hectares (3.5 acres) All most forgot, America has refused to join the Metric world. I come from a farming background and am married to a Townie (city dweller) need to watch my Kiwi slang. It was costing us around $250 pr week to live in the city - not counting food, petrol etc. We had to pay council rates, environmental rates, water, electricity, natural gas (hot water & cooking) rubbish collection, insurances etc etc. In comparison our new property is costing us less than $70 pr week. Our local rates are minimal, we collect our own water - 2x 35000 Lt tanks (approx 18,500 gallons) we generate our own power- solar and wind. Insurances are minimal- a third of what we were paying in the city. Fortunately as New Zealanders, health care is mostly free, our public hospitals are Free, our prescriptions are on average $6 per prescription, our GP visits are inexpensive, and specialist healthcare doctors are heavily subsidised by the NZ government. Only those on high incomes bother with health insurance and that is mostly aimed at selective surgery in private hospitals etc. In the region we are living in ALL health care is FREE for all residents - ‘Thank You New Zealand Government. Looking forward to watching your past videos to catchup. Your message is so true - Doesn’t matter what part of the world we live in the message is the same, wealth is a personal perspective, based on what each individual wants out of life and each persons background and experiences.

While still in school my parents moved to a property and we lived in a tractor shed with no running water. It was character building and in no way detrimental!
Your reply to the comment at 31:57 gets a big thumbs up from me! My wife and I decided years ago that her being home was better for our children than extra money. Btw she still made extra money by babysitting the children of our friends who did the opposite. All four of our daughters turned out fine. As for living in a trailer, I grew up in trailers and don’t see why some people look down on those who do? You guys are living your dream life because of the hard work you are doing. I just started watching your videos and will go back and try to catch up on your older ones for the education information. I recently retired and while not off the grid we are debt free and I’m looking to get back into small farming on our 4 acres.
I am 26 years old and working towards my homesteading journey. I've watched dozens an dozens of your videos and am accumulating info on top of what I already know. Loved this video, and your honesty. I have worked since I was 10, and recently lost my X-ray job of 44 years. It was devastating at first, but I know how to cook, can, knit, crochet,and cannot believe how much money was spent just to work.!!! My gas consumption is was down, no insurance costs, and trying to plant raised bed garden made from my pallets that I receive when I get coal. Love you guys❤️

I have just subscribed after watching a few of your videos on canning. I live in North Wales, United Kingdom and recently bought a property at auction with about one acre of land. Self sufficiency is my goal and your videos are a godsend to me. I have even ordered a pressure canning pot from the US. You both come over as the real deal and I wish you every success in your off the grid venture.

Your video was in my feed as a recommended video. All I can say is, wow! You are both full of class. You can tell you are both intelligent. The thing that struck me most though is you portray to sincerely care about the community that’s asking these questions. The end when you explained what the correct questions to ask are and then explained it was the most valuable part. I’m a fan!
I enjoyed this frank discussion, and unlike many of the generic suggestions of how to make money from home, actually talked about the mentality to succeed. It doesn't matter what we subscribe to, if we lack the mentality to take it forward and actually turn it into something valuable/useful for others. I found it interesting to hear what didn't work for you, Jaime (candle business) as educational, as what did eventually work (art). It's not just about taking risks, but also knowing when to cut your losses. I also appreciated the comment Jeremy made about needing to be self-motivated. This is a challenge!
Here's an idea for that tractor you need. I watched a friend of mine who lives out in the sticks get himself a nice (not new, but nice, and not very old) Bobcat skid loader for nothing. In fact, he was even some cash ahead in his dealings. He had his eye on a neighbor's tractor for some time. Parked out in the weeds for years, like we've all seen them. He knows a lot more about 'collectible', tractors than I do, but told me even though this one was 50 years old, it wasn't anything collectors would be too interested in. He wondered what the guy wanted for it, and what was wrong with it, so he stopped and asked one day. It turns out the block was broken, cracked, and it couldn't be repaired. He said he'd take scrap iron price for it, which came to about $80 at the time. Tom, my friend took it home, thinking that since he was so 'web savvy', unlike the old guy who sold him the tractor was, that he'd just go online and locate a cheap engine to put in it. What he found out online instead was those hard to find parts are top dollar now for each and every little piece. People not only buy collectible tractor stuff, but a lot of them just want to keep what they already have working whether it's considered collectible or not. He took six or eight pieces off his tractor a week, cleaned them up, and listed them on Ebay, and stuck all that tractor part money in a coffee can, until the tractor was nearly completely gone. The internet has so completely changed the world for buyers and sellers. I couldn't of even imagined 30 years ago that you would be able to search the whole world for an obsolete 50 year old tractor part without leaving your house, or run a successful junk business 20 miles from the nearest oil road that could fit in one parking space. He ended up selling a lot more than he listed by asking the buyers what else they needed for that particular tractor. He had enough in that can to go buy that Bobcat. I don't know what he gave, but I know it was North of $8000, and he had cash left over. That was over five years ago now, and he always has at least half a dozen things up on eBay and tractor enthusiast forums at any time now. He just breaks down one tractor at a time, gets, most of them for free, or very little, and takes what's left to the scrap yard occasionally. I don't think he makes money anymore though, I think he just changes old farm junk into '57 Chevy parts, and other hot rod needs 😊 This isn't his job, he has a real one, but just a profitable hobby he spends 6 or 8 hours a week on.
@@Guildbrookfarm Oh I forgot to mention, that since then he carries a little notebook and writes down all the old tractors he knows about in his part of the country now. When he sees someone on one of those forums looking for something, often he can get the whole tractor for as much or even less than the part is worth, then there is his next free one, and he often ends up selling more of the same tractor to the guy who was originally looking.
What you two are giving your children by showing them there is another side to life is PRICELESS! While education and material things are great, your children are getting to experience life from another perspective! The time spent with you two, while watching you two (and them) work hard to make your dreams come true is invaluable! GREAT JOB 👏
You can have a priceless and modest and honest life anywhere, regardless if it be in the city or country. We try to live in peace with everyone, regardless of personal opinions. In the end, the marriage is more important than where you live and if living is causing problems to the marriage, compromise. For example, my husband is more rural but he respects that, in spite of living rural previously, I've become more of a city girl and I'm no longer ashamed to admit it. I still try to be self-sufficient, be modest, honest, and humbler regardless of where I am and my husband is the same. Our marriage is what matters and my husband and I have learned to compromise. Love the simplicity and honesty in your videos. Many of these channels try to romanticize life in the country, which I believe has led a lot of people off grid or even to a farming lifestyle, who would not go in that direction if the marketing of these videos were more realistic. Appreciate your hard work. You deserve to succeed.
Always loved the content you put out and enjoy your personalities as well. Having said that, I love your response to the question about your kids and what you believe and why you do what you do! I also love how Jeremy refers to the girls as his girls! Just shows what type of man he. I've heard you mention how your girls go back and forth between your home and their dads and they seem very happy and well adjusted. You're doing it right! Not everyone will understand your choices, I personally do and respect that. Thanks for this video, it has answered some of the questions I've had in my head.
Thank you for sharing this with us! I don't know why people get so bent out of shape about money and how you spend it. My husband and I have been trying to get his family farm back up and running. I had a guy ask me the other day how we survive doing all this. We live simply. Bottom line. We are fortunate to live in the house that my husband grew up in which is bought and paid for. So our bills are internet and electricity. I am so much happier here caring for our animals and planting our garden and it gives me more time to focus on knitting and crocheting which I hope to have an inventory to sell things someday to help a little. I will definitely check out the skill share site. My husband has been wanting to learn to paint and this would be awesome. Sorry this turned into such a long comment. Long story short, keep kicking @ss 😁

As yall develop ur skills and understanding the use of land + resources, maybe u could be a homestead planning consult firm. Provide advice and garden plot planning, establish infrastructure for animals, procurement of water, book references to build a homesteading library, etc. Maybe the work is accomplished thru the homeowners + work crew ( friends + family of owners, contractors if neccessary for labor ) but they pay u for the planning, NOT the sweat. Ur both so knowledgeable and do well w logistics and problem solving. Youve got enuf to share to yield profitability.
I love your chanel and I love how you are raising your kids and the values you pass to them. My husband and I also "sign out" from the system. We moved to Costa Rica, because it was our dream to live in Central America. In my opinion there are three major components that make possible to live the life you want. First and foremost always before buying something, ask yourself a question "can I afford this?" If you have to take a loan to go for a vacation or buy new furnitures, it means you can not afford this. Second is paying off the debts, like Jeremy said. Third, also very important in my opinion, not to spend money for unnecessary staff that after a week would be forgotten. I think people do not realize how much money they spend on the daily basis. Even if that is a dollar or two, it adds up. One time I ask my daughter to do this exercise. Every time she wanted to get a coffee from Starbuck, I asked her to set aside the money instead. After a month she was amazed how much money she saved.
You guys are so cute! I watched your video on canning and prepping and Mylar bags 1 or 2 years ago and learned tons. I came to remember what you said about the all American pressure canner. Do you do bees? I told you last week my husband is the reluctant spouse but he is very smart and would be the 3rd person you talked about.....I am soon 62 and Mark is 60 we have lived in the same house for 32 years and I have hated it for 32years as we are in a town were theirs alot of people related and gossip is the big thing....when our son died in our home 4 years ago there were alot of people standing out to watch Daniel being taken away but only one that sent a card and came to his funeral. I may sound a little bitter but its because I am at a breaking point with these people and now they tried to make me get rid of my chickens saying they see rats which is not true the only rats are the ones with two legs. So to get back on track here do you think its realistic at our age to want to be off grid?

We too live in a small town but we are outside the buzz of the town and have several acres. Age has nothing to do with what you wish to do. Even folks around the same age have different abilities and drive to get to where they want to be. Look at it for your long term, If you have back, knee, or any thing else that may hinder your abilities, be sure to include that in you plans. How much land are you willing to maintain, what size animals can you handle? These are some of the things we are looking at. With both of us having bad knees, I am in the process of making our garden a raised garden. Crawling around on bad knees and not being able to get up isn't cute. Lol!! It's not a huge garden, it's manageable for us and enough to feed us, and nearby family and friends which was our plan. Do what will work for you. Bottom line be where you are happy and do what makes you happy!
There is something so calming... so real about this couple... I'm sure they will have a million subscribers in no time at all. Their interaction with one another that we see is almost biblical. The way one stops speaking when the other starts, and they are patiently sharing the platform, the calm attitudes they portray... I love watching and listening to this couple.

Thank you for your sharing and your level headed advice. My husband and I sold the big, beautiful suburban home. Relocated to a rural area. We love our lifestyle here. We still maintained our regular jobs (we are both nurses). Working 2-3 days a week, my husband went to part time hours and has started a Handy Man business because it is something he LOVES. He has been quite successful and we are looking to have him quit his regular job completely. For us it has been more gradual. But we are out of debt and that makes decisions so much easier. I once was a top producer earning over 6 figures had a home new cars 3 kids in childcare and private schools. Never even looked at nature always stressed out and pressured. I was unhappy and complacent. Now everything is changed not by choice but now I sing to birds, I love nature, I love myself, for the first time ever, I need for nothing,

I am homesteading on 65 acres in the heart of the Missouri Ozarks. I call it the "Gentle Karma Farm". My old "city" friends look at my lifestyle and think I've lost my mind. Let's just say my definition of "normal" has considerably changed. What I appreciate most about your videos is that you have real knowledge to share and you are not wasting my time trying to be "cute". Now that technology has made it possible to shoot videos of ourselves and post them on-line, it seems too many people now think they are TV celebrities. I don't even waste my time watching those videos. Keep up the great work, stay authentic, and "Thank you" for just being yourselves.

People have a lot of nerve when they aren't face to face with somebody or facing the consequences of what they say to somebody! Anonymity on the internet is a blessing and a curse at the same time!
I feel the questions are unfair as pertains to THEM. But... I see a lot of tiny house videos, where they spent like $150k on a tiny house, live on this amazing piece of land (mom ‘n’ dad’s?) and they’re like, “I’m a children’s book illustrator.” I wonder if “the simple life” is often a vanity project for trust funders.
I think people are just curious, I don’t think they mean the tone that’s construed, just curious as how they make it bc a lot of lower class are struggling, they are looking to go off grid bc they aren’t looking to spend much, not realizing it does cost a lot up front - or they do realize it costs a lot up front, & want to look into some of the same things other’s are doing to help them get to a comfortable place in their life too
I appreciate your honesty in this conversation, but it is very personal, so hats off to you. My hubby and I worked and saved for years from our job and now are enjoying retirement life. We got what we have by our own hard work. I've taught my sons to work hard because no one is going to hand you anything. I just had a conversation with my 22 yr old son about being happy where you are with what you have. If you can do that, it doesnt matter what anyone else has. We are not wealthy, we dont have brand new cars or the latest phones and toys ... what we do have is a home that is paid off, no credit card (or any other) debt and children that have never known hunger. For me, that is an abundance of blessings.
The girls will learn a ton out on the farm or ranch , they will always recall the things they learned and have much more common
sense than most of the other kids.

We worked hard our whole lives but still owed money out the wazoo. We sold the house, moved to the woods and became mortgage free. It didn't happen all at once but now 7 years on we're finally getting septic and upgrading our solar.
It's not easy or instant but it's worth it.
I will never be a homesteader, but I have learned so much from watching you two that I feel I can impliment some of what you do to plan for anything that could go wrong in the world we live in. I want to create my home that will sustain myself and family. Thanks so much. Looking forward to seeing ou build your home and land.

You guys have worked very hard to get where you are at.. Hoping your success increases!
You can grow flowers and shrubs for landscapers and local stores. We did that. It doesn't cost much and easy to sell. We started 400 pine trees and sold them for 2 dollars each. It took us two hours to collect and left them for 2 weeks to root all by themselves. Lots of ways to make money. Thin out trees selling timber. Grow berries and sell them to local stores.

I agree with you. My fondest childhood memories are from the times my parent's household income was extremely small. They spent 9 months in Mexico as missionaries and then came back to the states and moved to a small town that was depressed but full of nature. My best memories.

I absolutely love your comment about giving your kids what is important! Some of my happiest memories, as a child, are the 2 weeks we got to spend at my Grampa's cottage in Vermont with no electricity, and a hand pump to get our water. We spent the whole day playing in the brook, sawing the branches off of the trees that Grampa and my Dad cut down, digging in the dirt, and then at night we'd sit around the kitchen table playing cards... it was amazing and I'm grateful to have those memories! Thank you for the video, I always enjoy listening to you guys!
I cannot believe people actually asked you those questions. I congratulate you guys for answering them, but explaining whether or not you print merchandise for one, addressing questions about you guys making money or being rich. Make $$$ off your passions and skill sets, on grid and off grid if you can. Some peoples comments sounds more like envy. Wow, I wish I had money to give you guys for the fact of sharing this video that I am blessed to watch. I intend to do homestead also but hearing you address printing of tshirts were an issue...I felt awkward. I am a fashion designer who is looking to live off grid and making merchandise is one way of my source of income and You should do anything your heart desire.

In my humble unsolicited opinion, people ask personal, specific questions about your finances, not because they're boorishly nosy (most of them anyway), but because they greatly admire your journey and the independence and they want that, too. The transition is big and the unknown is scary. With anonymity of the Internet, viewers can forget to be considerate.

Just found your channel, thank you for your honesty. My husband and I have been blessed, sold our house and found an off grid property, which we have purchased. We had been seriously affected by the 2008 world recession, and we were still paying a mortgage in retirement.
In no way do we see our new property as an easy fix to retirement. Going from a city with all the services at our fingertips, to 1.5 hectares (3.5 acres)
All most forgot, America has refused to join the Metric world. I come from a farming background and am married to a Townie (city dweller) need to watch my Kiwi slang. It was costing us around $250 pr week to live in the city - not counting food, petrol etc. We had to pay council rates, environmental rates, water, electricity, natural gas (hot water & cooking) rubbish collection, insurances etc etc. In comparison our new property is costing us less than $70 pr week.
Our local rates are minimal, we collect our own water - 2x 35000 Lt tanks (approx 18,500 gallons) we generate our own power- solar and wind. Insurances are minimal- a third of what we were paying in the city.
Fortunately as New Zealanders, health care is mostly free, our public hospitals are Free, our prescriptions are on average $6 per prescription, our GP visits are inexpensive, and specialist healthcare doctors are heavily subsidised by the NZ government. Only those on high incomes bother with health insurance and that is mostly aimed at selective surgery in private hospitals etc. In the region we are living in ALL health care is FREE for all residents - ‘Thank You New Zealand Government.
Looking forward to watching your past videos to catchup. Your message is so true - Doesn’t matter what part of the world we live in the message is the same, wealth is a personal perspective, based on what each individual wants out of life and each persons background and experiences.

Your reply to the comment at 31:57 gets a big thumbs up from me! My wife and I decided years ago that her being home was better for our children than extra money. Btw she still made extra money by babysitting the children of our friends who did the opposite. All four of our daughters turned out fine. As for living in a trailer, I grew up in trailers and don’t see why some people look down on those who do? You guys are living your dream life because of the hard work you are doing. I just started watching your videos and will go back and try to catch up on your older ones for the education information. I recently retired and while not off the grid we are debt free and I’m looking to get back into small farming on our 4 acres.

Loved this video, and your honesty. I have worked since I was 10, and recently lost my X-ray job of 44 years. It was devastating at first, but I know how to cook, can, knit, crochet,and cannot believe how much money was spent just to work.!!! My gas consumption is was down, no insurance costs, and trying to plant raised bed garden made from my pallets that I receive when I get coal. Love you guys❤️

I have just subscribed after watching a few of your videos on canning. I live in North Wales, United Kingdom and recently bought a property at auction with about one acre of land. Self sufficiency is my goal and your videos are a godsend to me. I have even ordered a pressure canning pot from the US. Your video was in my feed as a recommended video. All I can say is, wow! You are both full of class. You can tell you are both intelligent. The thing that struck me most though is you portray to sincerely care about the community that’s asking these questions. The end when you explained what the correct questions to ask are and then explained it was the most valuable part. I’m a fan!
I enjoyed this frank discussion, and unlike many of the generic suggestions of how to make money from home, actually talked about the mentality to succeed. It doesn't matter what we subscribe to, if we lack the mentality to take it forward and actually turn it into something valuable/useful for others. I found it interesting to hear what didn't work for you, Jaime (candle business) as educational, as what did eventually work (art). It's not just about taking risks, but also knowing when to cut your losses. I also appreciated the comment Jeremy made about needing to be self-motivated. This is a challenge!
Here's an idea for that tractor you need. I watched a friend of mine who lives out in the sticks get himself a nice (not new, but nice, and not very old) Bobcat skid loader for nothing. In fact, he was even some cash ahead in his dealings. He had his eye on a neighbor's tractor for some time. Parked out in the weeds for years, like we've all seen them. He knows a lot more about 'collectible', tractors than I do, but told me even though this one was 50 years old, it wasn't anything collectors would be too interested in. He wondered what the guy wanted for it, and what was wrong with it, so he stopped and asked one day. It turns out the block was broken, cracked, and it couldn't be repaired. He said he'd take scrap iron price for it, which came to about $80 at the time. Tom, my friend took it home, thinking that since he was so 'web savvy', unlike the old guy who sold him the tractor was, that he'd just go online and locate a cheap engine to put in it. What he found out online instead was those hard to find parts are top dollar now for each and every little piece. People not only buy collectible tractor stuff, but a lot of them just want to keep what they already have working whether it's considered collectible or not. He took six or eight pieces off his tractor a week, cleaned them up, and listed them on Ebay, and stuck all that tractor part money in a coffee can, until the tractor was nearly completely gone. The internet has so completely changed the world for buyers and sellers. I couldn't of even imagined 30 years ago that you would be able to search the whole world for an obsolete 50 year old tractor part without leaving your house, or run a successful junk business 20 miles from the nearest oil road that could fit in one parking space. He ended up selling a lot more than he listed by asking the buyers what else they needed for that particular tractor. He had enough in that can to go buy that Bobcat. I don't know what he gave, but I know it was North of $8000, and he had cash left over. That was over five years ago now, and he always has at least half a dozen things up on eBay and tractor enthusiast forums at any time now. He just breaks down one tractor at a time, gets, most of them for free, or very little, and takes what's left to the scrap yard occasionally. I don't think he makes money anymore though, I think he just changes old farm junk into '57 Chevy parts, and other hot rod needs 😊 This isn't his job, he has a real one, but just a profitable hobby he spends 6 or 8 hours a week on.
Now THAT is a cool story. Very entrepreneurial. 😎
@@Guildbrookfarm Oh I forgot to mention, that since then he carries a little notebook and writes down all the old tractors he knows about in his part of the country now. When he sees someone on one of those forums looking for something, often he can get the whole tractor for as much or even less than the part is worth, then there is his next free one, and he often ends up selling more of the same tractor to the guy who was originally looking.

While education and material things are great, your children are getting to experience life from another perspective! You can have a priceless and modest and honest life anywhere, regardless if it be in the city or country. We try to live in peace with everyone, regardless of personal opinions. In the end, the marriage is more important than where you live and if living is causing problems to the marriage, compromise. For example, my husband is more rural but he respects that, in spite of living rural previously, I've become more of a city girl and I'm no longer ashamed to admit it. I still try to be self-sufficient, be modest, honest, and humbler regardless of where I am and my husband is the same. Our marriage is what matters and my husband and I have learned to compromise. That's what it takes. :) God bless!

Love the simplicity and honesty in your videos. Many of these channels try to romanticize life in the country, which I believe has led a lot of people off grid or even to a farming lifestyle, who would not go in that direction if the marketing of these videos were more realistic. Appreciate your hard work. You deserve to succeed.
Always loved the content you put out and enjoy your personalities as well. Having said that, I love your response to the question about your kids and what you believe and why you do what you do! I also love how Jeremy refers to the girls as his girls! Just shows what type of man he. I've heard you mention how your girls go back and forth between your home and their dads and they seem very happy and well adjusted. You're doing it right! Not everyone will understand your choices, I personally do and respect that. Thanks for this video, it has answered some of the questions I've had in my head.
Thank you for sharing this with us! I don't know why people get so bent out of shape about money and how you spend it. My husband and I have been trying to get his family farm back up and running. I had a guy ask me the other day how we survive doing all this. We live simply. Bottom line. We are fortunate to live in the house that my husband grew up in which is bought and paid for. So our bills are internet and electricity. I am so much happier here caring for our animals and planting our garden and it gives me more time to focus on knitting and crocheting which I hope to have an inventory to sell things someday to help a little. I will definitely check out the skill share site. My husband has been wanting to learn to paint and this would be awesome. Sorry this turned into such a long comment. Long story short, keep kicking @ss 😁

As yall develop ur skills and understanding the use of land + resources, maybe u could be a homestead planning consult firm. Provide advice and garden plot planning, establish infrastructure for animals, procurement of water, book references to build a homesteading library, etc. Maybe the work is accomplished thru the homeowners + work crew ( friends + family of owners, contractors if neccessary for labor ) but they pay u for the planning, NOT the sweat. Ur both so knowledgeable and do well w logistics and problem solving. Youve got enuf to share to yield profitability.

In my opinion there are three major components that make possible to live the life you want. First and foremost always before buying something, ask yourself a question "can I afford this?" If you have to take a loan to go for a vacation or buy new furnitures, it means you can not afford this. Second is paying off the debts, like Jeremy said. Third, also very important in my opinion, not to spend money for unnecessary staff that after a week would be forgotten. I think people do not realize how much money they spend on the daily basis. Even if that is a dollar or two, it adds up. One time I ask my daughter to do this exercise. Every time she wanted to get a coffee from Starbuck, I asked her to set aside the money instead. After a month she was amazed how much money she saved.
