Hey, great video! Do you have any advice on how to make studio light look more natural if you don't have a real natural light source? Also, how can I get a soft light on the model if I don't have a big studio light and only a medium/smallish sized one? Thanks a lot xx
Try bounce flash off of a white ceiling or white wall. The ceiling or wall shouldn't be more than 10 ft away though. If you don't have a close ceiling or you're outside try bouncing off a white reflector.
The light stand you're using- is that what you use while traveling? Mine is the same (I think), but lugging it around on a plane or around a new city is extremely inconvenient. Can anyone give tips on a solid traveling light stand?
In the 20TH century I would have said find the nearest hu/man reading a newspaper and have them hold it up as a reflector, but why of walls a white vehicle ( for no color cast)or some other object/surface nearby might work as a reflector. You also might want to pose the subject against the sky, expose for the sky and bring up the shadows in post production/image processing with Raw files (some (Sonys and Nikons) mirrorless/DSLRs can do this without graing/noising up).
Here is something amazing about this guy: most photographers would place the flash to the opposite site of the window light, which would completely eliminate the 3D look, and the models would look like a flat piece of paper. Instead he used the flashes as an extremely low power fill light to ease up the shadows that the natural light has created, and without eliminating the natural look of the image. This is how you properly use flash (depending on the look you are going for of course) When most people hear about flash photography the always think of the high fashion "flashed in the face model" look. But with experience flash can behave like a super versatile reflector!
mangostreet! I want to express my gratitude to both of you! I dont know how to start in, but thankyou for every video you share upon us. its really inspiring and gaining knowledge about photography. Thankyousomuch mangostreet!!
This is so great because I've only been shooting with natural light for most of my career. I've been almost afraid to add in flash because I wasn't completely sure on how it should be set up, or what would work best for me. Thank you guys! Keep up the great content.
You're amazing, guys! Thank you for all of your outstanding tutorials. Not only your videos are inspiring and very informative but you also manage to keep them simple and interesting to watch.
literally refreshing to see content with this level of talent and taste. annndd the videos are pertinent to the subject the whole video, every video, instead of the typical repeating of the same information worded differently.. not even bullshitting, it's a beautiful thing.
Please make a series out of your critique videos! It helps a lot! Watching others being told what they can do differently and whats missing is really encouraging, and helps add to what i'd want to fix with my photos and show me where i am at!
You guys are simply amazing. You guys made me buy a camera. My friends bought iphones or some other expensive stuff from their first pay. But I saved and bought a DSLR Canon EOS 700 D. It has been one of the best decisions I took :) Thank you guys !
The most beautiful thing in the video was the litlle dog staring at the girl during the photoshoot. I´ve learned a lot with your videos guys. Thanks :D
Great episode! Made me realize how I really don't connect with flashes. Maybe tops for getting that terry richardson stylized look of shooting in a total dark..but, otherwise....you get unnatural light on your subject and it feels out of place...you get shiny faces...weird shadows in the back. Of course, different strokes...so that's my personal thoughts... Even a reflector could feel out of place sometimes..with too much light bouncing back, blinding your subject.. it's quite a challenge to fill that light into your model, and make it super subtle...
I don't know how I missed this video, got my bell pushed and everything. Great tutorial and how good is it to hear someone say you don't need super expensive kit. I don't go in the studio as much as I should, I really need to give myself a kick up the backside with this one.
So awesome. Right when i at the point of investing in a "on location flash setup", one of my favorite you tube channels make a video about the subject. This just makes me even more wanna go for it and experiment. Thanks guys!
Thank you so much for all your tips and videos! Really, it's so helpful! Thanks to you guys, I got in to a Photography school that I always wanted to go! :D
this is soooo helpful you guys. I'm a natural light photographer and I'm moving to NYC next month, so definitely trying to get more into fashion and studio based stuff. this was awesome. keep it up, Mango Street!!
Hi! I'm a beginner in photography and I've already learned so much from your videos! Thank you :) also, I took a photography class but I'm still having issues on knowing which settings to use depending on location, time of day, etc. any tips? Thank you!
This video is so good. I think lighting is one of those things that can be kind of eluding, even to people with experience. Please please please make more videos about lighting 👌
I'm one of those photographers who's always wanted to get into studio shoots but can't afford studio lights, I've only got a speedlight... Could you guys do a tutorial on shooting studio-style using a speedlight? 🙏🏼
congratulations guys!! to all of you :) as a photographer i really enjoy watching your videos. Even if i already know part of what you're talking about, there's always a trick, or something new to discover and learn! Keep up the good work :D love you
I love that you use more Dreampop/Postrock-ish music instead of that overused Lifestyle/feelgood-pop that ist common in photography tuts and on TH-cam in general. Was that "We lost the Sea" in one video? or just something similar?
Hi Samuel! You can achieve a hard light setup no problem. Though for softening the speedlite, you'd want to bounce it off a large white wall to increase the size of the light source (while keeping the subject close to that wall). You can also buy a thin, translucent/silk piece of fabric from the fabrics store, hold it up using a light stand, and aim the speedlite through that. Some people have used bed sheets. Hope that helps!
The 'Exposure Diamond' would make more sense if you switched the position of the ISO and Shutter Speed. Flash is directly affected by Aperture and ISO settings so the dotted line at the bottom of the diamond would indicate this.
Nice start, but I always like to stress the relationship between artificial light with the aperture and natural light with the shutter speed, and iso with everything.
Woohoo! Turned out GREAT!! Thanks again for having me... you two have to change your #notamodel hashtag soon 😉

I only just started using external flash last month and it opened up a whole new area fir my photography. This is a nice intro to lighting!

Hi! I'm a beginner in photography and I've already learned so much from your videos! Thank you :) also, I took a photography class but I'm still having issues on knowing which settings to use depending on location, time of day, etc. any tips? Thank you!
Lots of practice and experimentation! Once you do it enough, it becomes second nature and you don't even have to think about it too much.

*not model, * not tough, =)) lol love your tutorials
Cool video! I've only got a speedlite with a little plastic diffuser and a bounce card. Am I able to still pull off these looks with the one flash?

Please, please, please make this a series. There are so many concepts that amatuers have no idea how to dive into. Like lenses or choosing locations.

Nice start, but I always like to stress the relationship between artificial light with the aperture and natural light with the shutter speed, and iso with everything.
