Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (NES) - Don Only, No Subweapons Ninja Rap Guide with Amazing Commentary

  • This challenge is great but Vanilla Ice and the movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze are greater. If you haven't already, purchase some of Vanilla Ice's music (cited below) as well as the movie and instantly improve your life. So far they were cool enough to allow this video to be posted without a copyright strike and that's really awesome of them.
    Game: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
    Platform: NES
    Completed: December 12, 2022
    Rules: Beat the game with only Donatello. No subweapons are allowed, including that invincibility item. If you accidentally pick one up, you have to restart. Also, since just about everyone seems to think that Donatello is the best turtle, make it harder by singing the Ninja Rap by Vanilla Ice for the entirety of the underwater section. The length of the song fits that section perfectly and it's the only way to truly complete the challenge. Mess up the lyrics and you have to restart. Memorizing them is recommended since constantly looking down at a lyrics sheet while trying to navigate the water section is going to make your life harder.
    After finishing a Mike, Raph, and Leo version of this challenge I decided to give Don a try. All you have to do is beat the game only playing as Donatello, without using subweapons. This includes the invincibility item that makes your turtle spin around. In fact, don't even pick anything up. Subweapons are lava. If you pick one up at all then the challenge is failed. Because using a continue revives the other turtles, don't do that either. Oh and don't forget to sing the Ninja Rap through the water section without messing up the lyrics. That's going to be the toughest part. There's a "no commentary" version of this that I uploaded as well if that better suits you. This recording was only of the successful attempt, not the practice beforehand and me struggling to play the water section and messing up those Ninja Rap lyrics a billion times.
    I think the commentary pretty much nullifies the need for written highlights, but you can always check the version with no commentary for that, or if you can't stand my voice or loud clicky controller buttons.
    Oh and yes...I TECHNICALLY play as the other three turtles just long enough to get them killed within the first minute and I guess that TECHNICALLY counts as a "three death" run :)
    Final thoughts:
    This was harder than I thought, although admittingly I hadn't practiced the Technodrome section. Donatello is widely considered to be the best turtle and I can see why. He has the highest damage output as well as the best forward striking range. His slow attacks and the fact that he only "pokes" with his weapon can make certain parts tricky though. Most importantly, a new appreciation for the Ninja Rap is born!

    The other turtles didn't die, they were captured. Probably still bound and gagged in one of those buildings.

      Rats and we already left! Well they must have survived because they're all there in the second TMNT game for the NES. Perhaps Kevin McCallister rescued them when he was also lost in New York! Thanks for watching!

      Thanks Hal! You know, I was actually wondering whether a "subweapon only, no regular weapon" run was possible but I don't think you can pick up a subweapon at the beginning without swinging your weapon and getting an enemy to drop one. It would still be interesting to just kill enemies in the first area until a boomerang is dropped and then never use the regular weapon again, or possibly hack the game to make you start with boomerangs. If I was better at that sort of thing then maybe the game could even be hacked to start with only one boomerang. Might be possible...

      Thanks man! Donatello has always been awesome, and is generally accepted to be the best turtle in this game. That's why this challenge needed the Ninja Rap to make it a bit more interesting. Glad you enjoyed the commentary and that my voice wasn't too annoying. Thanks for watching 🙂

    Now that you've completed the challenge for all turtles, rate the relative difficulty of each on a scale of 1 to 10.

    • @subledger.
      @subledger.  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching as always! I started with Mike, then did Raph, Leo, and finally Don. It's hard to give a 1-10 value since that's kind of a strange order and my skill and familiarity with the game was improving as I went. Overall though I think it's clear that Raph was the hardest due to having low damage output (and no damage increase when below half health) and the worst range. The whirly enemies in the Technodrome are absurd with him and will always take two hits. Mike was the second hardest because he has slightly better range than Raph and his attack is better when under half health. He can also one-shot the whirly enemies in the Technodrome if under half health which is a huge help (but oddly he can't strike up to hit the Technodrome's turrets even though Raph can). Most people would probably say that Don is the best since he does the most damage and has the best striking distance but I actually feel like I had an easier time with Leo since his weapon has a nice enough range, he attacks faster than Don, can kill the whirly enemies in one shot (when under half health), and he "swings" his sword in an arch rather than Don's delayed "poke" which is rather limited and is easy to miss with when dealing with smaller enemies. Rocksteady and Mouser are easier with Don but they aren't difficult bosses anyways. Admittingly though, I hadn't really practiced the Technodrome with Don and perhaps I was just tired during his run due to the crazy number of times I had to restart due to messing up the Ninja Rap lyrics in the water section 🤣
      I'm interested to see what others might think. I think the most popular answer from worst to best would be Raph, Mike, Leo, Don. I'd agree with that, or possibly Raph, Mike, Don, Leo.

      @@subledger. Great review! I totally get your reasoning...
      I guess the curiosity aspect on the score ratings for me is, although I pretty much already figured the order of the turtles, I can't quite figure just _how much_ harder it is for one turtle over another. i.e. if Raph challenge difficulty is 10, is it a 4 for Don (waaayy easier)? Or still more like an 8 (just a little bit easier).
      I totally get how your constantly improving skills affects how your would see this if you evaluated the actual runs you did. But I'm more curious from an objective perspective -- i.e. like the par rating for holes on the golf course -- you'd just have to account for your overall skill progression when making such an assessment

      @@JD-mz1rl I can give it a shot. Let's see...I guess it depends on the scale. Like, if a 1 is playing with all four turtles using subweapons, farming scrolls, and using continues (something that cannot get easier) then I suppose a 10 would be using Raphael only, no subweapons, no pizza, no hit or something (something that cannot get harder). Since I haven't done that last bit, I guess I'll make the scale more like this...Let's say a 1 is playing with all four turtles using subweapons, farming scrolls, and using continues (since I've actually done that), and 10 is a Raph only, no subweapon run (since I've also done that and it was the hardest challenge I've completed). Using that scale, I'd say that the easiest of the four solo no subweapon runs for me was actually Leo because he gets tough enough to kill the whirly enemies (and many more enemies) in one shot if he's at half health, has a nice swing arch, good range, a decent "back attack" and can attack nicely through platforms. If an unrestricted four turtle run is a 1, let's say a Leo only no subweapons run is a 5 (I'll guess a Leo only with subweapons run is maybe a 3, but once you can do that, taking away subweapons isn't too huge of a stretch). That would put Don right there at a 6. This is arguable since he's the strongest and has the best "poking" range, but I had a tougher time with him because his attack is slower than Leo and mostly because he has no "swinging" motion and only pokes in a straight line, making smaller enemies a pain. Also his increased damage is only an advantage over Leo if we're talking about enemies Don can kill in one shot but Leo cannot (the bosses take more damage as Don, but they aren't a huge concern). I think they're close, and I wouldn't disagree with someone flipping them. Mike comes next at an 8. He has worse range than Leo and Don, but his range isn't that much worse than Leo's, especially swinging forward. At least he swings in an arch. When at less than half health he can destroy the whirly enemies (and many others) in one shot, but the final corridor is quite painful and requires very precise movements. He was the first solo no subweapons challenge I tried, but if someone were to try Leo and/or Don first then they'd be ready for Mike. Raph of course scores the 10. He is the weakest turtle with the worst range. His forward attack has slightly shorter range than Mike's (he at least swings in an arch though) but his upward and downward attacks are really short ranged and won't allow you to strike enemies through platforms nearly as often and even worse, he's the only turtle who cannot hit enemies that are behind him. This makes the final corridor a nightmare and the hardest part of any of these challenges. He doesn't gain strength at half health and therefore can never kill the whirly enemies in one hit. That coupled with the worst range makes that corridor very problematic and incredibly precise. Other than that final corridor though (which is a big deal), the rest of the run isn't THAT much harder than Mike's, although the shorter range means more chances to accidentally grab game-ending subweapons since you have to be closer to the enemies when you defeat them! I'd also say that anyone who can handle a Leo/Don run can handle a Mike run with a bit of practice, and anyone who can handle a Mike run can handle a Raph one with a bit more practice. Hopefully that helps. Who knows...I might read this later and change my mind a bit, but I think it's a decent assessment. I'd be interested to see how many other people actually read this and add their own opinions! Oh...but if you have to memorize and recite the entire Ninja Rap by Vanilla Ice during the water section...that makes the challenge SO much harder regardless of who you're playing as! Thanks again for watching and for the discussion!

    I said it before in the version without commentary; Switch to Don immediately, *DON'T* unnecessarily kill the other 3 - Probably save Raph for the swimming stage in Area 2, and don't let Don get killed!!

      Well this was supposed to be a solo turtle challenge so I wouldn't be allowed to use any of the other three. Just a way to make the game a bit more interesting and more difficult after already beating it with the team of four. But yeah I definitely think Raph is used the most as a damage sponge in the underwater area. In fact, I probably did that as well in my first playthrough of the game where I was using all of the turtles. Speaking of Raph, his solo run was by far the most difficult of the four. Thanks for watching!

      Thanks so much. I'm glad someone got some use and entertainment from the video. That Ninja Rap originally started as just trying to remember the lines and rap it during the underwater section without dying but it sounded like garbage with the underwater music playing in the background which has a totally different tempo and feel. One thing led to another and before I knew it there was a backing track and backup vocals. It was quite fun to make. The crazy thing is that the length of the original Ninja Rap just so happens to be very close to the exact amount of time needed to complete the underwater section so it fit perfectly! Walking over 1 tile wide gaps actually is a thing in Super Mario Bros. 1 itself. Then again, SMB1 didn't have Critical Annoyance, dumb enemy formations that invites character bias, a refusal to involve creativity with the enemy lineup, the Dam(n), broken level design in general, or mishandling of an available brand to have AVGN tear at it.

    • @subledger.

      I keep running into that "walking over 1 tile wide gaps" thing in NES games. It was in this game of course, in Super Mario Bros. like you mentioned, you can also do it in Zelda 2, and I recently discovered that you can do it in The Battle of Olympus (another NES sidescroller). Now I'm curious what other games allow you to just stroll on over short gaps like that. Interesting this is, those games are from three different developers so they shouldn't even be sharing any code on how the game handles motion/physics/clipping. Thanks for watching!
      By the way, if anyone else has any examples of games where you can walk/run over one tile wide gaps or any idea why it's so common in the NES era then feel free to post them here!

      @subledger.  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hahaha! Thanks for checking it out. I am by no means a rapper but that just made the challenge that much more difficult and rewarding. The hardest part was memorizing Vanilla Ice's lyrics and not messing them up during the underwater section. I had them on a piece of paper in front of me but I found that even glancing down for a second not only messed me up in the game but made me jumble up my vocals trying to find them on the page. If I messed up the words then I had to reset so I had no choice but to memorize the song. I had an earbud in one ear with the song playing so I knew my tempo was right. That way I could later put a backing track behind it since it sounded pretty awful with just my lyrics over the underwater theme, which is at a totally different tempo with a different rhythm. Amazingly, the Ninja Rap is pretty much the same length of time that it takes to complete the underwater area so I thought that was perfect. Once I got it right I was pretty nervous that I'd die during the run or pick up a subweapon. If that happened then it would be a reset, which means the Ninja Rap section would have to be done again as well as the rest of the game. Thanks for watching!
