Smartest thing I did was leave my single, feminist friends. My wife openly expressed her joy for sitting across the table from me at one of our first dates. She said she could not believe that my previous wife left the relationship to miss out on the sight of me across a dinner table. One of the best compliments ever. My dad gave me some of the greatest marriage advice ever. He told me that "in the beginning, you want each other. In the end you need each other. There is this long time in between where you neither want nor need each other and that is the time you have to get through. It is your and her duty to get through it." He and my mom celebrated their 55 year anniversary and I'm on my 20 year anniversary.

I'm generation X and always refused to date single mothers. I never outright expressed it when I was single, I just never gave single mothers a second glance. I believe men of the past were more open to being step fathers because single mothers were the exception not the rule. Single mothers also knew that they were at a disadvantage and in turn appreciated the men who were willing to marry them despite their child. Now we have the exact opposite. Single mothers have become the norm not the exception and they expect men to be okay with them having children (often multiple children by multiple men). The answer to that expectation is No, and men aren't wrong for feeling this way. Being a step father is a stressful, thankless job, with no reward. Children are a man's legacy and men want their own legacies. Men want their own families and to use their resources to take care of their own families. It is good that women are hearing and more seem to be listening to how much of a turnoff it is to have so many single mothers in the dating world.
