Yes, keep sharing the locations. I'm in the US, so it's fun to travel vicariously through the UK via your videos. Your photographs of the countryside are beautiful!
Thank you Victoria. Much appreciated. Hopefully you pick up some tips and tricks that you can apply to creating images in the US, if you are into photography that is. Otherwise just enjoy a glimpse of the UK countryside :-)
Hi Ben, just to let you know that the "Posts " are an old fisherman's dock. This was destroyed in 1944 when a barge carrying 180 tons of explosives broke free from the vessel towing it and smashed into Newhaven's West Beach. Leaving a massive crater. It was also reported that nearly all the windows in the local area where smashed, causing a few injuries, only one person died a Naval rating who was killed by falling masonary.
Paul, this is amazing - how did you find out, or is it local knowledge passed down? I cant find anything online. That explains why they are so far apart, as a ground would be one line of metal work.
Well, just stumbled across your channel. So glad you do share your locations, as I visit friends in Hurstpierpoint every year (sometimes twice). And I always head to the concrete chain link jetty at Hove, or Lancing beach for some old wooden groynes. I’ll defo be heading to this location, and will enjoy watching more of your videos for other ideas. Keep up the good work, you’re a natural.
Hi Stu, welcome to my channel. I make these videos for other photographers - in the hope that when I visit a new location I can find similar videos from local photographers. I have playlists, and tag most of the locations pretty well in the descriptions, but I have many based around Sussex.
Nice vlog and channel Ben - i've subscribed! Great video quality and your explanations of your thinking on composition etc very helpful. 2 lots of mid-roll ads in an 11 min video a bit of a pain though. I agree with what some others have said on location sharing. With some it's inevitable that they become honeypot locations for photographers whether you share or not (e.g. the harbour arm for storms). I don't think I'd share things such as individual trees, not down to whatthreewords level. Maybe just share where is good to park and leave it at that.
Hi Jon, welcome to the channel, and thanks for jumping straight in with a comment. I will review the adverts, as they are slightly out of my control how many they add, I can chose beginning middle or end... I have some videos coming up soon that will just be about the landscape - the locations wont be shared. Let's see how it goes down!
I think its helpful knowing the locations. I might be wrong but I don't think everyone will suddenly rush to an area. For me if or when I visit an area its handy to have as much info as to where a specific place is as I don't really want to waste hours searching. I might of visited somewhere in the same region and think I'll have a look whilst I'm here or even making a detour on the way home
Hello Ben! I follow you only a few days now but I love the locations you showed me so far. I always wanted to travel to the UK again, and this time with my camera. And getting to know some really nice spots, is so cool. Thank you very much from Switzerland
Hello Heinz, am I correct in saying you found me from Alex’s channel? My general ambition is to inspire people to get out with their cameras and specifically educate people on locations I am familiar with so that they get the most out of their visits. If you haven’t already, download the what3words app as I provide the exact locations of most of my photos.
@@benharveyphotography Dear Ben. Yes, Alex pointed you out in his video, which I enjoy a lot. And yes, I did download the app already, and it seems great. Hopefully I can get to England this year, and visit some of these great locations, you show us in your well done videos. Thank you very much, and have a good start into the new week.
If you climb on the hill to the right of the lighthouse you can get pretty good shots during storms, of course with a long telephoto lens. In regards to sharing locations, I think it's useful. So far the places you've shown in your videos are no secret, you're just making it easier for photographers to find them without prior scouting (you don't always have the time to come one day in advance, or can't afford to come so often). Photos are probably never going to be the same anyway, light will always be different
Yes I agree. I have published another video since and I’m editing another which are lesser known locations that I will keep the location to myself. But that won’t take away from the video anyway.
@@benharveyphotography Ok, just post your image on Landscape Locations UK 🤣 Just joking, I usually leave the location the way I found it, but some may not be so caring about their surroundings. On the other hand I initially subscribed to your channel because of the way you show how to get to a certain location and what to expect. You have been my scout to places I was going anyway, so thanks for that, but also take it into consideration for your future subscribers/viewers.
Hi Ben, regarding giving locations away it really depends what you have found or the popularity of the location. Like Newhaven or a previous video at Ditching Beacon probably would not matter. But I made the mistake a couple of years ago about a location of a amazing windswept tree I had found on Dartmoor. I gave the location to another photographer who had asked where it was. I was not particularly bothered at the time but he had obviously told some who had also told someone else now the location is pretty common knowledge. I see pictures all over place now of it and pretty much rinsed it of any originality for me. I unfortunately don’t get down there that often so I had not yet got the right conditions for the images that I was after. Maybe I’m being selfish but I really regret telling someone before I had at least got the images I was after.
Hi Noel, that’s a really interesting insight, and kind of echoing someone else’s comment about sharing well known locations and keeping the local ‘secret’ locations anonymous. I don’t think that is being selfish, as you probably worked hard to find a unique composition or a new subject, and that made your images special - it is too easy for someone else to come along at the right conditions and set up their camera with a lot less effort.
Looking forward to trying out my Anamorphic lens they sent me, nice images and cool look to the video. May try it myself ill shout you out if I do haha.
Playing with this made me want to get a genuine anamorphic lens, but they are all very expensive and I think manual focus. But a 1.33x lens gives you a really wide perspective.
Great videos mate, subscribed ! Little off topic - have you guys noticed btw that the colours and more specifically - the skin tones on the DJI Pocket 2 are actually worse than the DJ Osmo Pocket 1 or that's just me... I own both and the Pocket 2 is better in every category than the Pocket 1 but fails massively in the skin tones department and also a bit of that active track "3.0"...(hopefully DJI will come up with an update on those. I tried my best to shoot in Cinelike D on the Pocket 2 and colour grade it after but never managed to match the beautiful straight out of camera colours / skin tones like on the Pocket 1 in Natural picture profile. You used to use the Pocket 1 with that Natural picture profile before and I believe no post colour correcting / grading, right ? The colours in the videos were coming out just spot on (reminds a bit of those "canon colours"), especially for a little device like that. Keep it up !
Hi Mike - yes I agree. I used the pocket 1 for over a year with the normal colour profile and it did look better. I don’t have a contact at DJI yet....but one day I should be able to put in a request :-)
You cover a lot of ground Paul! The conversation about sharing locations is more to do with protecting remote or delicate locations. Things like bluebell woods, poppy fields etc that draw a lot of people (not just photographers) especially when there is inadequate parking provision etc just seems to end in locations being ruined. Following this video I made a decision to share well-known locations but the more remote hard to find places I keep to myself to preserve nature.
Hey mate - new to your channel, liked and subscribed. I enjoyed this, looks a lovely location.
