This really reminded me of how difficult opera singing must be and why the good singers make good money. You have to know the lyrics, know the music, be in voice, be dramatic, and do it in front of 1000 or 1500 people. When it's good, it's really good.
I don't know how many times I have seen this opera. It still holds a place in my heart. I was lucky enough to also hear A ndreas Scholl in Århus some years ago. A total unforgettable moment in my life.
She is my favorite in this role so far. I think she absolutely owns that place between the precision and control of Baroque music on the one hand, and the sort of opulent luciousness that the Baroque era also represented. She is just a dream to listen to.
A superlative performance sung by Dam-Jensen with such perfect pitch and intonation. I have never been so utterly transfixed by other interpretations in the role. Not only does zinger sing so beautifully, but she moves with such grace and seductively captivates a bewitched Julius Caesar. Love the choreographed arm movements, especially when she shoots Cupid’s arrow!😍😍😍
What could I add to what has already been said in these comments?!?! Gorgeous ... divine ... breath-taking ... sublime ... elegant ... superb!!! This takes us away from the earth to the very gates of heaven. An aria about love expressed with feeling and emotion. So lovely and beautiful - it nearly brings tears to my eyes! Well done!!!
Thank you darling Inger.last Thursday at 4pm I was so poorly I’ve played this amazing piece every day since & it has saved my life sorry for being melodramatic love you & handle for giving me back my life xxx
I don't think it's "nutty." Caesar is wearing a modern military general's uniform and Cleopatra is wearing an elegant evening gown and long gloves. Must every single production be in done in pseudo Greco-Egyptian and Roman costumes???!!! It's a love story that transcends time. Why can't a production show a wee bit of creativity and originality without ruining the beauty of the production.
I'm participating in an opera-sponsored vocal competition, and this is the Opera song that I chose. For the preliminary round, you send in a recording, and the semi-finals and finals are live performance. If I make it to the semi-finals (I sent in the recording yesterday, and I find out Saturday), then I'm definitely taking this inspiration to heart. Regardless of if I make it to semi-finals, though, I've still got Solo and Ensemble to perform this at as well. Thanks for posting this!
Bravo¡¡¡
She is a Danish soprano called Inger Dam-Jensen. She won the Cardiff Singer of the World competition back in 1993. I saw her two years later in Copenhagen as Ophélie in Thomas' "Hamlet" and she was really wonderful. She has appeared there regularly ever since.
I've heard no better Cleopatra than Inger Dam Jensen's. Their vocals are of an elegance that makes other singers sound vulgar in comparison. The combination with Andreas Scholl as Caesar and her as Cleopatra, is the culmination of the musical enjoyment. But even the fantastic Andreas Scholl loses something of his Brilliantz next to Inger Dam Jensens.
Jensen who is much better! The end for tonight. Go to bed and sleep well.
The choreography is so interesting here, Like at 4:56 is the start of "zooming in for the kill", Ceasar is the hunted here, remember! At 5:18 he is under controlled now, and that quick turn (very elegantly done here) seems to suggest that she must kept her eye on him every second at this crucial moment, there is no let off here, no doubt who is in control here ! and finally casting a spell on him was eloquently illustrated by the hand ... it's like, Got you ! sucker ! lol
Breathtaking, riveting. Marvellous. I should so much like, however, to know the meaning of the superscribed Danish words near the beginning of the video: they elicited merriment among the audience. Thank you for posting this sumptuous performance!
Cecilia Bartoli’s take on this same scene using updated staging is just breathtaking. I was mesmerized as was the audience. Am so glad I stumbled upon her version which has spoiled forever this sexually charged scene.
@palcika1 actually, originally, she wasn't supposed to be singing to Caesar, she was supposed to be singing with a group of other women, pretending not notice Caesar standing there, even though she planned that he see her and become entranced.
No problem Palcika1. I myself found it more enjoyable knowing the Lyrics ..Thanks for the initial posting. Don't you think it's good to see a girl serenading a boy for a change !? It's meant to be a joyful interlude, but I always find there is a hint of sadness in the music by Handel, may be it's fitting, because at that moment, Cleopatra court Cesare out of political needs ... May be she changed her mind later on, but that's a different story.
Over the actual stage at this theater, it's written "Ein Blot Til Lyst," or "not only for pleasure" to state that the theater wants the performances in Copenhagen to be edifying as well as entertaining. Here though, we have a scene that presents a stage-within-a-stage, and over that is written "only for pleasure." It's meant to imply that Cleopatra intends her performance to be purely for Caesar's enjoyment. The audience laughed because they recognized the reference to the actual theater itself.
I am regularly coming back to this video, its one of my two favorite singers who sang this aria beautifully. The second one is Tatiana Troyanos, check it on: th-cam.com/video/Xi4tYuEJqeM/w-d-xo.html&pbjreload=101

In response to amonasro100, Beverly Sills was one of the greatest singing actress, the closest to Callas that has come so far. ( Even though Callas and Sills were two completely different kind of actresses). I do agree that Dam-Jensen has a great voice, a beautiful legato which is perfectly focused... although the return of the A section was a bit dry and hoo hum. Listen to the cascades of trills in the return of the A section from Sills to hear a truly magical piece of artistry. I also fail to see the difficulty in the acting as it is blocked in this production and the awkward hands are distracting. To truly evaluate a singer's acting capacity, one needs to look at both the individual aria and the development from beginning to end. Don't take my word for it, listen to the complete recording and then top it off by listening to Sill's Manon.
Well, it's meant to be. Cleopatra doesn't rely only on her natural charm, she employs all she can to impress and seduce Cesare. So, the writing and the staging is ironic here.

Inger Dam-Jensen's elegant, beautiful, and charming performance matches the song PERFECTLY. Who wouldn't fall for Cleopatra?
She's very classy.
So nice
Octavian
Io no!
actually, Cleopatra VII wasn't known for her beauty. She was known for her IQ and perseverance.
I don't know how many times I have seen this opera. It still holds a place in my heart. I was lucky enough to also hear A ndreas Scholl in Århus some years ago. A total unforgettable moment in my life.

My god! This is absolutely divine. The best rendition I've heard of this. Absolutely breathtaking. ♥
Beautiful!! Elegant, clean, sparkling.

Una bella versione da ascoltare.
What a seductive voice and superbly choreographed scene. Divine and enchanting singing!💝💝💝
Such a beautiful voice, I remember her from Cardiff Singer of the World and she was stunning.
Such a stylish and stunning production.
So effortless... Breathtaking
Bellísima música y magnifica interpretación. Para gozarlo con tranquilidad.
This is a very fine voice. Her musicality and interpretation is excellent. I look forward to more from Dam-Jensen.
Great.
She really is very musical...conveys the emotion.
I do despair at many of these nutty productions - thank heavens the singing saves the day!

I do wish that all interview presentations started like this.....
Amazing!
love the staging. very unobtrusive and natural. nice.

she is the best cleopatra. Bar none.
Hermosisimo!!!!
beyond words
Oh-wonderful wonderful. I don't know this singer. She gives a pretty impeccable performance.
Thank you so much for taking the time to explain this!
It's lush! I love the formal style and the ornamentation of the singing. Thank you. NimrodJohn2009

See Montserrat caballe for the perfect version 👌
@@judyjones2475 Thank you very much, unfortunately I cannot find a high quality recording of Montserrat Caballe. Do you have a link for that?
Superlative!
This performance left me breathless 5*

Bravissima!
Best Kleopatra in the World!

The only soprano who does not make me want to listen to Maria Callas after listening to her performance.
this is wild
She is one of the very big sopranos of our time. But i think she prefere to work most in her home country.
why is the chair like that?!!!??!!
@palcika1 actually, originally, she wasn't supposed to be singing to Caesar, she was supposed to be singing with a group of other women, pretending not notice Caesar standing there, even though she planned that he see her and become entranced.

Better than most movie music
Well yes...it is the best of the genius Handel
What did the sign mean? Why laughter?
Dont know why they laughed but it means "Just for pleasure"
