When you push one domino to make an elaborate setup all fall down you have a perfect analogy to the pieces of almost any project: IT IS JUST A GAME OF DOMINOS! I once was involved in an extensive project as a DREXEL coop for Chrysler that was managed with a PERT CHART. It took a lot of work to include all the steps but even more to deal with the constantly changing time required for each step. Because of that and many other project experiences I get it. AND, my heart goes out to you both.
*Just wanted to let you guys know!* *You are now my #1 To Watch TH-cam Channel!!* (And i have been watching Videos for over 10 years!!!) Soon... (Next Year or two..) I plan to do the same thing!! Just Waiting to find the "Right person" to do it with lol!! That's the hard part!!!
When building your own home or any large job you will find many days seems like you do not get anything done but it does end. You will never be with out that backhoe ever again they are a life saver good job
You could use the biggest rocks to line either side of your driveway...we did that and we painted the rocks fluoro green (I wanted orange :( ...but was voted down...) so that they glowed bright when the headlights hit them - great for foggy/heavy rain bad weather..
you two are doing awesome, Do not worry about running around and doing all the little things in a big project and feeling like you didn't get anything accomplished, that is normal. As a construction worker that is the name of the game all the little things stitched together, and the reality of the situation that is in front of you immediately throws any plans you made out the window. Adapt and conquer, keep up the good attitude.
Working as a team with your spouse is a great thing, most married people have their own things going on and don't work with each other much at all. Keep up the great work on the videos and the progress on your homestead. :)
You're right many people at this stage of construction get excited and go digging too big a hole or Too Deep of a hole or they don't take the time to find the corners of the building to truly understand what it's going to look like when it's done all of your efforts that you spent on this video will pay off in Spades congratulations
I am enjoying your videos. 1. They remind me how my Dad and I used to do things when I was growing up. 2. I like the combination of on grid/off grid/home steading living within your means way off approaching life. 3. I like how the two of you work as a team.
You two are doing an awesome job, I love your videos, doesn't matter right or wrong, simply because you like to do what you want and try to make it right. Everyone learns along the way, keep going, ignore those bad comments, good comments will help you make it better if they are trying to help you.
Applause for you folks. Over the years I've built more then one house. Always exciting to start the layout and dig. And you are doing great with your balance. Ignore trolls and keyboard commandos.
Alyssa, We beat ourselves up too much. Jim is always telling me to look at what we did accomplish not what we didn't. You guys starting digging your house. WOW. Big Deal. We don't miss an episode. Big Breathe and a pat on the back never hurt anyone.
One thing you all could have done with the electrical. Make a hole for the conduit to go through in your forms, then run the conduit up along your post. You would have to make sure there was a gap wide enough between your post and conduit to attach the electrical box. I know this is hind sight, but it is something to keep in mind for future projects and individuals that are planning similar applications. I am an electrician by trade and have done this on a couple of projects.
I remember finding Alain Vaillancourt's (the woodpecker) youtube channel and the binge watching of his wood shop build series. I was lucky enough to find Pure Living when they were just getting started, and I must admit, I'm hooked. Great stuff guys, trolls and all!
I know someone who had a house built by a developer who "overshot" the grade excavating their basement. They ended up suing because they had water in their basement with the least amount of rain. They settled out of court when the contractor put in a drainage and sump pump system and cash settlement to help the cost of operation. I enjoyed the drone footage.
Hi there, a tip a fairly cheap way to minimize road dust is first to water it down and then add road salt let it dry and the road is less dusty and more work friendly. Good luck with the house build
Saw an ad for a "GRIZZY today manufactured out of steel with exactly the same design as your model #3 2' box around the bottom and same angle of grid and the price was $5000. Now there is an idea to supplement your income. Sell your plans !!!!!!!!!!!! Just a thought from the frozen north of Canada. (Soon to transplant to Costa Rica to do my version of off gridding ) Good luck with the house build and God bless your efforts..
Thanx for the video's you two, watching you both through this journey has been a good watch for us, if we all learn together as we all have hard work and failures to brag about, once again thanx for the vids.......good luck to you two we'll be watching.
It's so great to finally see the start on house proper. All your hard work is starting to pay off. Congrats for getting this far, can't wait to see the next steps.
Do you guys have ANY IDEA...how inspiring you are ?!?! I am easily overwhelmed by the amount of stuff and crap you guys go through, I get anxiety watching some of these videos but, watching you take step by step and not bite off more than you can chew is extremely admirable and is a good influence up on my mind. Keep up the fantastic work.
good for you guys so happy for you we are moving in august to our 84 acres with no house and are terrified winter can be brutal and very very very cold sometimes
Jesse and Alyssa I wish I had half the energy that you put into your days. Great job great videos. I am excited for you. I will be watching you build your home.
A big PAT on the back guys you have come a long way since your first video and now you have broke ground on the main build of your dream house, you are laying the foundations to your next 20- 30 years together. It's the start of your family home so both congrats and well done. But no matter how hard it gets the foundation your laying now is strong and will not fail plus when things look down and a bit low remember this. Life is what you make it and if nothing else always look at the immortal words of monty Python. Always look on the bright side of life, 😜
Thank you for not resorting to clickbait and exploiting your bodies for views. TH-cam is full of that shit and it is getting very, very, very old. Very much appreciated.
Jesse and Alyssa: when you have the spot excavated and are ready to start building your concrete walls (assuming you will be building concrete walls) be sure to tarp off the high dirt areas because if it rains all that weight will come crashing down on those concrete walls and you will end up doing the work all over again. I've seen it happen on job sites when i was in the trades. hope that helps you later on. Love the videos guys. keep 'em coming. you're both awesome.
Shawn C. Wow. well that explains everything. I don't have a FB account. Somebody hacked it a couple years ago and I haven't been allowed back on FB since. LOL. But it really doesn't matter to me. I'm not much of a Suckerburgh fan anyhow. LOL
Good job folks! Putting yourselves out there, making it happen. I enjoy these videos as my partner and I built our house, just the two of us too. Exciting! 🌻
I think you may be sitting on a potential revenue source. The rock that you don't use for your foundation can be sold to landscape suppliers. Glacier granite or what ever it is is worth big money. Good luck, I really enjoy watching you two work and the progress that you have made.
I'm concerned about some things: 1) that the drop off of your excavation needs a step off (like stair steps) around and behind your house or rock walls (you have an abundance of rocks) to prevent landslides, erosion, and water run off, how have you planned for that? 2) removal of all the chemical fluid spill and proper disposal to prevent contamination of your beautiful new home. 3) saving for use as much of the rich dark healthy soil in with your compost for your garden. You two are doing excellent, your patience in planning is paying off and I wouldn't be surprised if you already have the above concerns resolved and haven't shared those with us as yet. Great videos, so much enjoyment observing your journey. grams
Keep up the awesome work you guys! You’ve inspired me to share my life experiences as a builder and explorer of all things done with dirty hands and good ol hard work! Hopefully the next generation can learn from you persistence and hard work!
Hi there from the Netherlands! Great to see your videos! Love to see how you guys are just normal people doing incredible / amazing stuff! Keep up the good work!
I love your path/goal/life outlook....... and have been dying to give you guys one piece of advise, not sure if anyone has said this before....if you put a little crossbrace(from left to right) on the underside of the grating of the Grizzly, you can put your Case bucket up under it ( the cross brace will rest on the top lip of the bucket ) roll the bucket back and up and whaaa laaa ... no more picking it up with a chain. ill try to find a vid as an example...... keep it up guys, screw the haters
I have been wondering if you guys considered taking a look into the Earthship method of construction or housing design such that you would capture your own rain, grow veg and fruit trees and generally have an indoor green house as a working part of your house, and make use of your water 4 times before it goes to the septic system. I suggest looking up the Earthship method, you might even get some idea's for parts of your design method to heat or cool your house in the end if not other stuff.
Nice video. Really enjoyable to watch. And you seem to have found a stunning part of the world to build your new home in. We have been struggling to find videos that we actually want to watch and yours seem to fit the bill nicely. We look forward to seeing your new house take shape. Happy building from Wales, UK.
Concreter tip #2, no need for plumb bob, just pick up a stone and drop it from the line. Where it lands, it your mark. Simple and very quick and no tangled strings.

Thanks for letting us be part of your journey. I am 8 years away from building my dream home on our property.
Congrats on starting the home build hope everthing goes in the right direction.
Those that can do. Those that can't criticize those that do on the internet. You guys rock on. Love the video journaling. Keep em coming.
Working as a team with your spouse is a great thing, most married people have their own things going on and don't work with each other much at all. Keep up the great work on the videos and the progress on your homestead. :)

Oh wow! Look at you guys! GO GO GO! Kick the butt on that job!
I find your thought processes great for understanding each of your challenges .... I am really enjoying the journey with you
Congrats guys! A very special day for your journey!

to be a newbie , you did a great job moving that much dirt in one day without creating a hole you would have to fix later.
You guys are making good progress and you're still married. That's a win in my book. Continued good luck to you guys.
Still together then. Jeesh
Thank you very little. always enjoy thank you for taking the time and effort to share your process and you journey.
Congrats on starting your house build!!!
Applause for you folks. Over the years I've built more then one house. Always exciting to start the layout and dig. And you are doing great with your balance. Ignore trolls and keyboard commandos.
Enjoying the videos! Glad to see your starting ground works. Ignore the negative BS. There's a lot to go around and it's easy to come by.
Congrats on starting the home build.
YOUR TEAM WORK IS AWESOME. GOOD JOB.
Remember to put a drainage behind the house. Its not expensive and prevents headaches regarding runoff and groundwater.
WOW it's really exciting to see you break ground! Next big milestone get a roof and walls on that baby! So cool!
Alyssa, We beat ourselves up too much. Jim is always telling me to look at what we did accomplish not what we didn't. You guys starting digging your house. WOW. Big Deal. We don't miss an episode. Big Breathe and a pat on the back never hurt anyone.

Old school foundation made out of on site rocks and mortar... All those rocks will make a pretty cool wall...
Hi there, a tip a fairly cheap way to minimize road dust is first to water it down and then add road salt let it dry and the road is less dusty and more work friendly.
Good luck with the house build
Exciting. Best way to give you a grade on today's video is let you know you got the emotional part across.
Saw an ad for a "GRIZZY today manufactured out of steel with exactly the same design as your model #3 2' box around the bottom and same angle of grid and the price was $5000.

Yea! Let's get started on the home!! Margarita time!
Been lurking for over a year ... still enjoying ... and rooting for you ...
Another great video, don't get down on yourselves when building a house it's a crazy and wild ride so hang tough guys.
A gas weed wacker would be a great addition around your property. Especially up the stairs of your hot tub...
Nice update!!! Congrats on getting started on your house. Thanks Alyssa for the drone footage too...

I appreciate this channel. You guys are doing great, please ignore all the couch potatoes who are experts at everything, but never do anything.
I think you may be sitting on a potential revenue source. The rock that you don't use for your foundation can be sold to landscape suppliers. Glacier granite or what ever it is is worth big money. Good luck, I really enjoy watching you two work and the progress that you have made.

Another great video! Keep it up you 2. The house will look great.
best wishes as you start your project.
Idea: use the big rocks for a wall on the back wall, to hold the hill. got some beautiful rocks.
You two are so inspiring!
Keep up the awesome work you guys! You’ve inspired me to share my life experiences as a builder and explorer of all things done with dirty hands and good ol hard work!
