Brimwood Farm I thought of you today, (apart from when I saw your insta posts) it was our first hot day above 22C (it was 30C) and I found it quite warm because I’m not yet acclimatised.... I remembered you once saying how hot it was at 27C.....soon anything below 35C will feel like a cool change , but today I felt my English heritage. 😂
Kerry L hi Kerry, yes chooks are such good value when broody too 😂 I’m sure it’s hormonal! Then again, spending all day sitting on a nest would make anyone a little cranky. The ducklings are very sweet 😍
Beautifully succinct summary. Broody hens crack me up, their nervous squeaks are hilarious. I'll add that their eyes protrude more than usual when they are broody or under general duress.
Hi Elissa, I just love your beautiful ducks. Thanks for sharing all your duck wisdom. I think I might get a pair in the future when we move, so I love learning from your channel. Take care xx Cathi xx 😘
G'day Elissa, great video on how to tell if they are broody. I can't wait to get some ducks but they are so hard to find over here atm. Have a great week stay safe and God bless you. 🦘👍
Hello P N, they do love many green plants for sure, some plants I have to protect with wire around them but there are some plants they don't eat thankfully.
Moat Cottage Homesteading Hey Elissa I’m well as I hope you are because you look well in your video, the weekend has been great and now the extended day light means more time outside, by the way we have one of our ducks sitting on 7 eggs and is due later this week so we are looking forward to that.
Mike Nunn oh that is so exciting, I look forward to the duckling news. 🐣 I am doing fairly well thanks and the more time we can be outside the better 😁 ☀️
Chicken Duck Homestead yes she is an excellent mother, it’s her first time and I’m so thrilled with how she is doing, as you know it can go either way with Muscovies.
I've been wondering if our wild females who come by are broody. I've been seeing less of them, and they're a lot more chirpy and just seem to be in a mood. Maybe we'll be seeing new ducklings later.
Hi there...i nid help on this as im new to ducks....my ducks are olredy laying eggs but when wil they be broody...im scared the eggs wil be wasted. I have a incubator and i placed eggs in there too but i heard that incubators cant hatch duck eggs since its hard. Any help wil be appreciated.
I have three currently broody and two are very peaceful and will let me check on their eggs under them, but one is VERY aggressive and will not hesitate at all to lunge at me and bite me if I get even within a couple feet of her eggs lol. I’m not mad about it because it means she’s a good mom but today she was only sitting on half of her eggs and I wanted to move the rest underneath her and she went after me lol, so I had to get gloves.
She sounds like a good Mum for sure, all the best for your upcoming ducklings, it is very exciting

Thankyou Elissa We have 2 Muscovy ducks, 2 hensand no drakes nor roosters. One of the Muscovy girls is broody and is being very agressive towards the other duck . Should we separate her from the rest of the flock? Or should we replace the eggs with fake ones? Would really appreciate your advice. We love your videos. Thank you from Qld🦆
Hi Emilia, I would take her off the nest and keep her off it until she snaps out of her broody mood. If you can’t lock her away from the nest easily, you may need to put her in a seperate cage for a day or two. The longer she has been broody, the longer it can take. She will go back to her pleasant self once she is no longer broody and the other Girls will forgive her aggressive attitude. I hope it’s not too wet where you’re situated. 😊

@@MoatCottage Thankyou for your reply.. Is it possible to hatch fertilized eggs from a different duck, by a broody duck?
@ yes it is. Chickens can even hatch out duck eggs successfully. Muscovy ducks take 35 days to hatch, while other duck breeds eggs take 28. Just don’t let ducks hatch out chicken eggs because baby chicks can’t swim.
If she is not safe and has been sitting for a while, I would build a cage around her or try to move her as her safety is most important, however, I have not had as much luck moving my Muscovies nests as I have with Chickens, It really depends on the duck and how far the relocation is. Do It after dark also.
HA this is all too familiar. My one hen sassy gets CRANKY when she is broody. Shes usually side by side with my other muscovy but when its that time - leaves her in the dust! And she cheeps at me for sure if i get to close. All in the seasons
I don’t seperate my drakes from the girls. The broody girls are fairly protective. If you have too many drakes or a problem drake that is bothering the nesting duck, then I would seperate.
May i just ask ma'am, when your duck take her bath while brooding, does her eggs still hatch? Because here in the Philippines we believed that a brooding duck should never take her bath because the eggs might rotten...
Yes they always hatch, even when she takes a bath. The feathers mostly repel water due to their oil content and the little bit of moisture left, actually helps with hatching out the eggs as it adds humidity to the nest. When muscovy eggs are artificially incubated, they need to be sprayed with water mist to assist with the humidity and hatching.
I have a wild Muscovy duck start laying eggs in a flower pot on my balcony a while back so I got her a bigger flower pot and put hey in it. I’ve seen her have 5 different batches of babies now but this last time she has been on the nest for 2-3 months and keeps taking out eggs that seem to have been cracked put of her nest and dropping them on the floor of my balcony. I’ve taken them away today bc I’m pretty sure they are all dead. One hatched about a month ago but she abandoned it to continue sitting on the nest.. I even found and returned the ducking to her but she abandoned it again. No eggs have hatched since and it’s been far too long for any of those eggs to be alive. Is this broody behavior? Is this something that happens sometimes with ducks? Thanks.
This is a common occurrence. I feel that Muscovy ducks often won’t leave the nest for only one or 2 ducklings, they stay with the eggs, potentially at the expense of the hatched ducklings, waiting for more.
Do broody hens shows signs when it's almost time to hatch out little ones?I have 4 broody ducks one has been setting for over a month then another one is right behind her to hatch. Then 2 more have about 3 weeks to go.Gretel my first one all her eggs are dark but she hasn't went on lock down yet.
Hi Sarah, no not really, she will continue to sit quietly as before and not bring any attention to herself. You may have some ducklings by now? So exciting.
Hiya I’m abit concerned about one of my girls I have one drake two girls one is broody and laying the other seems really restless today she’s been walking around the gardens and it sounds like she’s crying boping her head constantly ? Could she be broody ? Or could this be something else
Watch my other duck videos on this and it explains everything. I cut one wing back, when the feathers are fully grown out and not blood feathers. So the ducks don’t fly over the high fence and get eaten by predators
@@MoatCottage thanks, I have 4 ducks here at the castle and we are just finishing the pond and area around for the ducks we made a fence 1 meter 20centimeter high around it all will they fly over this? The area for them is big within the fence

They are so funny - as are chooks - when broody. 2 adorable ducklings - and the mum is a pretty girl! Cheers xx

Beautiful hens they are very round, my muscovy girls aren't nearly that round.
Thanks John 😀

Very informative video. Thanks, Elissa. Question...Do chickens exhibit the same signs when they go broody?
Does Muscovy duck stop laying eggs if we tack out eggs daily?

It looks like one of the wings have been cut, is that the case??
Yes and I have videos on why and how I do this to protect my ducks
