  • It was so nice getting in the water after the WINTER months. I had a little bit of a cold but I was not going to let that keep me away from the first dive of the summer.
    We have not had clean and calm water for a couple of months now. This is just a video to show our beautiful diving spots we have around our coast.
    The plan was to shoot some mussel crackers en galjoen as the galjoen season is about to close but we could not find any decent size fish.

    I see a number of other fish types around but not on the menu. What determines if a fish is edible or not?

    • @Bloudam
      @Bloudam  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I am very picky with what fish i eat and see as edible. Mosr of the reef species are edibles but not all of them taste good

      @@Bloudam I respect you for this. The way I heard it best was to move like a sea turtle- smoothe, slow, and unassuming. Keep your head down during duck dive & descent, go straight to the bottom ideally on the left or right side of a ledge to hide your body while keeping your attack arm free, and wait. I typically keep my eye line real low and kick up sand or seaweed tossing in a few grunts or band plucks making sure my whole body is on the bottom with my fins down low as possible. After a few moments get your eyeline just high enough to see in front, not looking left or right too much since you won't be able to make a shot on anything that isn't in front of you without spooking it. Being tight to the bottom allows you to typically shoot up, which keeps your spear from bashing into rocks (not always), and most importantly once you land the fish make a smoothe, relaxed, and controlled ascent. One of the best ways to practice is to ditch the spear and just focus on your swimming technique/being totally unassuming while you poke around. The fish will get comfortable if your not a threat and will come in close to investigate. Learning to move in a manner that doesn't spook the environment is critical to being a successful hunter. I appreciate your video and responding the way you did. Much love from New England, USA!

      No problem. Come hunt in south africa where people are being chased by Great Whites and the surge dont allow you lie on the bottom. I am diving like that with my head to show you the bottom if i tuck my head during dive yoy wil only see water.
