actually if wizards did a yearly product that was just a mystery booster style pack of all the cards printed that year it might be a kind of cool draft to play. not that they need more sets but hey.
This year I improved on deck tweaking - so much so that my friends in my playgroup have been asking me to go over their underperforming decks with them. I learned a lot of good advice from you guys!
Someone must have made the observation that if you don't know about the existence of Magic the Gathering but are into schlocky swashbuckling 80s movies, you might think North 100, "a Canadian Highlander podcast," is an inscrutably-named podcast where Canadians talk about the Highlander franchise.
Honestly this would be a funny idea. A negative points list would be amazing but it would probably need to be in decimals so it doesn't get too broken.
We got some really good new lands this year. The new set of creature lands are pretty fun and some can actually push your deck synergies. The surveil lands may be the best new land cycle and tapped lands in a while. The deserts don't suck and the ping can be kind of nice (though, I probably don't play them in most decks unless being a desert is relevant or I need 1 extra land, ping for 1, IMO is certainly better than gaining 2 life). The verges are pretty solid, especially when you have one in a deck that's primarily one color with a small amount of splash.
I definitely agree with yal about surveil lands there so good I'm considering running a one off one in my schmedium red list as something I can fetch that isn't a basic most Ian for the turns where I ain't getting much dinw with an untapped source. Still unsure what color combo it will be its definitely between red black and red white for which one i run
@esperwarlord admitadly i was considering that myself as I am already on canyon and in my current point spread i could swap crypt for sol ring to open up the point for fourth and at that point I just add a platue and maybe a sacred foundry for the easiest splash ever
So semi-impulsively joined a Highlander tournament at an lgs near me. I’ve never actually played the format just watched it played by the North100 guys. What deck should I try and learn to take?
Really? That was my 2nd favorite set this year, after Duskmourn and MH3. Great, super balanced Limited format, cool mechanics, and while the theming didn't work for everyone, I like Wild West stuff.
Got to meet all 3 of you at magic con vegas, Nelly and Serge were super kind. Ben was alright lol. 🙂. Love all of you and heres to another year of lrrmtg
The claim near the end that the menace of the format is stompy mox decks feels very out of touch. Many of these decks get bricked by cards like Frog and Barrowgoyf especially the red ones where their removal hasn't kept up with skyrocketing toughnesses
I gotta ask -- does every single deck in the format run a lot of graveyard recursion/synergy? I just honestly don't see how surveil lands are auto-includes now while you guys see temples as unplayable.. I understand why the surveil lands are good but the disparity between the two for simply changing "put on bottom" to "put in graveyard" is staggering to me.
I believe the main reason is because they can be fetched up by fetch lands, because they have basic land types, while the temples dont have that upside. The surveiling into the graveyard doesnt matter too much for most decks
Another commenter has already pointed out the fetchability aspect but yes, nearly every deck in the format has some graveyard synergy. Blue decks and black decks are obvious with cards like Snapcaster and Reanimate but you also have cards like pre-war formalwear, scavenging ooze, Pyrogoyf etc etc
Graveyard synergies aside, this also smoothes your draws by allowing you to dump something unnecessary into your graveyard. Extra lands you don't need or a removal piece that doesn't work in your current match up.
Yeah but so did the the temples (scry duals). Being able to include some and that also giving hand selection potential to like 4 - 8 other lands (your fetches) is in my opinion why the surveils are so much better.
@@DelphinusZerobeing able to fetch them is a massive upside I wonder if the temples being printed with basic land types would make them less then or equally popular to the surveil lands
Starting off 2025, Serge 1 & Wheeler 0 1:08
Serge can win if he goes first
Serge so smooth with the shout that you don't even notice it, which maybe isn't a good thing 😅
2024 A Year in is a weird name for a set but here we are
actually if wizards did a yearly product that was just a mystery booster style pack of all the cards printed that year it might be a kind of cool draft to play. not that they need more sets but hey.
Serge did in fact shout out the patreon
No way.
I had to go back the 30 seconds to confirm.
Wheeler, 0% correct.
Holy Crap! A regular episode of North 100? The world is healing 🥺
I know i miss them doing more north 100 episodes.
I don't understand. Which set are they reviewing? Is 2024 a set released?
It's an annual thing, now.
I love that we spent over 10 minutes just focused on the Surveil lands!! My favorite set of cards from 2024!
I was really hoping you guys would do a year in review podcast for last year, I hope these continue every year!
This year I improved on deck tweaking - so much so that my friends in my playgroup have been asking me to go over their underperforming decks with them. I learned a lot of good advice from you guys!
For a moment the time made it seen it was only a minute long 😂 thought it was a short where they'd do the intro, go "it's okay", and cue end credits
28:42 woot woot shout out Australia!
Thanks for all the excellent content 😊
Oh my god! It's not a set review. Love to hear you talk about the format at large.
Don't they do that in the set reviews? Usually when a card is considered for specific decks or that might enable new decks?
Someone must have made the observation that if you don't know about the existence of Magic the Gathering but are into schlocky swashbuckling 80s movies, you might think North 100, "a Canadian Highlander podcast," is an inscrutably-named podcast where Canadians talk about the Highlander franchise.
Excellent, as always. Thank you!
YOOO LET'S GO!!! FREE EXTRA NORTH 100 PODCAST!?!? What could be next, fastbond to -1 points?
Honestly this would be a funny idea. A negative points list would be amazing but it would probably need to be in decimals so it doesn't get too broken.
I'll never know the best card I'm not playing...

Yes! So much YES! I was really hoping you would do an episode like this :)
Hell yeah! A normal episode of the North 100 Podcast!
Patreon shoutout at approx 0:44 by serge
Always the best episodes, glad to have another one!
Anyone know where to find wheelers manabase process? Did he mention it in a past episode?
North 100k!
Yes, tha can be infrequent enough that its not a set review! Next year too please!
Wow, no Nadu mentions is a shocker
Would love to see Nellys mono black storm deck on the show again! That decks sick
A NON SET REVIEW CANLANDER PODCAST!? I finally found one!
organic engagement: yes Serge got the Patreon thing in at the beginning, sorry Wheeler XD
I'll admit I went back to check if serge said the patreon
I definitely agree with yal about surveil lands there so good I'm considering running a one off one in my schmedium red list as something I can fetch that isn't a basic most Ian for the turns where I ain't getting much dinw with an untapped source.

I'd run red white. You should already be playing Sunbaked Canyon and maybe you can open up a cheeky white splash like Forth Eorlingas or Comet
@esperwarlord admitadly i was considering that myself as I am already on canyon and in my current point spread i could swap crypt for sol ring to open up the point for fourth and at that point I just add a platue and maybe a sacred foundry for the easiest splash ever
2024 was Serge’s Empire Strikes Back, 2025 he brings back Cursepox
1:37 Ben is always rite
NOT A SET REVIEW LETS GOOOOO
good and thank you.
Almost had a live "brother, ew" meme from Wheeler 10:36
There's something really funny to me of Benjamin "28 lands" Wheeler claiming to be the best manabase pilot of the format.
Serge, it's kinda a set review for 2024...
Sorry to disappoint you Wheeler, but Serge shouted out the Patreon a few seconds earlier. 😅
So semi-impulsively joined a Highlander tournament at an lgs near me. I’ve never actually played the format just watched it played by the North100 guys. What deck should I try and learn to take?
Are proxies allowed? What style do you like to play? Control aggro combo?
@ yes proxies are allowed. I’m more of an agro midrange player.
I think this still counts as a set review
I appreciate the complete nonacknowledgment of OTJ
Yeah I thought serge would at least bring up bristleback farmer and they'd remember the set
Big Score was mentioned I think?
Simulacrum Synthesizer
Really? That was my 2nd favorite set this year, after Duskmourn and MH3. Great, super balanced Limited format, cool mechanics, and while the theming didn't work for everyone, I like Wild West stuff.
Also, we know for a fact multiple cards from it see play in Canlander, like multiple Big Score cards, Bristly Bill and Caustic Bronco.
15:08 Until MH4 comes out (:
Wheeler so owes Serger $20.
Wait?! It’s not a set review podcast?
Wheeler has never made a mistake in his life
A L G O R I T H M G A N G
Got to meet all 3 of you at magic con vegas, Nelly and Serge were super kind. Ben was alright lol. 🙂. Love all of you and heres to another year of lrrmtg
Wheeler just lost 20$ XD
Wheeler wrong in 2025?

Wheeler is 100% right. Probably.

Out of all my years of consuming LRR content, I will say, James is the WORST character. Sorry, James. My new years resolution is to be more honest.
Didn’t your mom tell you that if you have nothing nice to say don’t say nothing?
