I think if you want to go towards cinematography and approach videos as a filmmaker, then we can't call them "content". We need to think of them as "filmmaking". As a marketer and independent filmmaker, I always see 'content creation' a marketing term; whereas filmmaking applies different theories and approach into a piece of visual art.

Please don’t be self conscious about your Pokémon card video, Hayden. It was incredibly inspiring, educational, and hopefully helps creators take TH-cam one step closer to being known as a place for quality content. I also believe TikTok is helping position TH-cam as a platform where audiences go for a step up in quality (as the creators only interested in quick easy fame will choose to create on TikTok).

Making more videos on storytelling of TH-camrs, movies, tv shows and also make videos on TH-camrs strategies and retention tactics of top tier TH-camrs. Make interviews with top tier TH-camrs too. This are some video ideas for u guys. Thank you love your content😊

Honestly just love this podcast and the discussions of this podcast. Last month I watched Hayden's video on finding nemo and storytelling at 1AM in the morning and I just randomly started crying. I've been making videos on TH-cam for the last decade. And in the last few years I was able to make my own short films which won at festivals and was able to also be on television for various things. But in the last year or two I fell down the trap of how to make only retention based content. And without realising it, it made me very sad. Because I forgot the most important aspect which makes me happy. Which is of course storytelling. So thank you guys for promoting storytelling. I genuinely think it's awesome to see and it's helping me with pursuing my passion of trying to make documentaries for the youtube platform.

I hope you guys have system in place, where you talk specific things in one episode and one on another. This is coming from a genuine concern of other podcast fading, a lot of podcast do well in the beginning but it slowly fades away because there’s no system in place.
Even though I like Ryan Trahan and love how he edits. I think bringing guest early on does more harm than good. Because we haven’t even learn/spend time with just you guys. We want to learn more about you guys before bringing on other people to talk about editing. 🙌🏼 big ups. Another great episode

Hello! First off I am in love with this podcast and how much knowledge both of you possess and for you to share it with us is such an incredible gift! I am a fulltime editor and work for the channels BeckBroJack, PopularMMOs, and have gone to film school to study the gift of everything that goes into film making. I would love to see you guys do an episode sharing where you get all your sound effects from. Imo sound editing is one of the most crucial parts of editing and it can be quite difficult to find the right sound effects and music at times. I've even had to create my own Foley, look through different games and have browsed through various websites just to discover good sounds.
Everything I've seen from the two of you is always perfection and I'm very excited to learn more from the both of you 🙏🔥

When you talk about audience trust, youtube vs paid streaming services, I wonder if paying to watch changes the relationship between viewer and creator.
I have a lot of trouble with this and my audience. It's like life has trained them that videos and tutorials like mine would cost a lot of money to watch. Buy an expensive DVD or spend a few hundred dollars to watch the video tutorials. I get people complaining to me in person that I am damaging the industry by giving away the same thing for free. Then they complain about the ads on youtube.
There seems to be this perception that if there isn't a monetized price tag, what we create has no value. I don't think it should be this way.
And I don't know what to do about it but keep on improving what I make.

    • @EditingPodcast
      @EditingPodcast  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Very interesting perspective! It just could be that paying even $10 per month makes people value something more. Weird how that is.

    • @CrowingHen
      @CrowingHen 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@EditingPodcast I wonder if it's part of the sunk cost fallacy. I paid money for this, therefore it has to be worth my time.
Or maybe people are just trained to value what costs money because this used to be the only way creators could earn a living from what they made?
All I know is I want to be part of the movement that fixes this. To help make information more accessible to people, no matter their income. Like what the library did for literacy, I think youtube could help people learn the skills they need to make their lives better - and be entertained in the process.
or just be entertained. That's always good too.

I just wanna say, when I watched Hillier's Pokemon video breakdown - the passion that was poured out in that video inspired me to do the same. To embrace the emotion and overthinking. It didn't come out as pretentious to me, it came out as: It's okay to be extremely passionate over what you enjoy. And that's editing and storytelling for Hillier. It inspired me a lot. Thank you for this channel btw, super great stuff for creators!

I watch TH-cam on my phone and put in full screen out of habit. Therefore, there is no recommendations distracting me.
I also use TH-cam for education, or podcast so it usually just stays in my pocket while I listen
Interview Casey he started to implement filmmaking skills, to create short movies on TH-cam so technically He started the movement to make TH-cam better with Story and emotional content.
So when they say people copy Casey.. it’s not true, they are copying Filmmaking rules. If you want to call it that.

  • @Sn4fu

Everything everywhere was a breathe of fresh air. I love how they played with aspect ratios. I love how the emotional climax was separate from the action climax but was also just as intense because of the editing and emotional weight of the story. They say a good movie can add years of emotional intelligence, this was one of those movies reminded me about the joy of cinema!!
Another wildly creative movie I’d recommend is house 1977 the Japanese horror comedy. It’s expands the box on what film making can be, just filmmakers having fun and doing art.

Part of me feels like a youtube creator posting at a slower rate, like maybe once per month or once every few months, but with higher production is reminiscent of watching movies or series. It makes it an event I don't want to miss like a release in theatres.
Some youtubers I love only post once or twice per year, but I know that when they post, I can trust them to be worth watching from beginning to end. On the other hand, I watched Ryan Trahan's Penny series everyday when it came. So maybe the common denominator is simply good storytelling. Although I'm still not sure if it would be the only factor.

This podcast is giving me insights that I didn’t think was possible on TH-cam. You spoke about Hayden’s content breaking ground and I agree with that. I’d also like to acknowledge the ground you are both breaking with this video podcast. There are so many of these out there and they just interview and that’s the story but I really appreciate the way this podcast relays both of your experiences with these topics. Hopefully everyone else can appreciate that as much as I do. So thank you guy!

A key mental switch here is about the word ‘content’. As long as TH-camrs call what they create ‘content’, it will only ever be that: stuff that ‘fills’ the platform, content, period. “What’s the content of that box?” “Oh, you know, odds and ends, stuff.”
No one who gets to put their work on Disney+ or Netflix would ever call their work that. Or does Christopher Nolan refer to his work as ‘content’? I believe the word plays an important role in this.

Hi Hayden! Just wanted to let you that the content you put out is very valuable to creators like us who have ZERO background in filmmaking. Hearing Hayden talk about his conflicting ideas was very engaging and encouraging to watch. I watch a lot of stuff on TH-cam and I find that I agree with his sentiment.
TH-cam has so many opportunities with long form content, but creators that try to pursue that type of content are punished and left by the wayside by the algorithm.
Those individuals should be praised for their hard efforts, not left to feel complacently hopeless.
The best way for this to change, is for the people who make "content" to start adopting the "why should the audience care" mentally and start producing story driven videos.

I tend to gravitate towards indie films because those one tend to be the ones that feel fresh.
I feel like Hollywood has a formula they stick (and it works, so that’s fine) but indie film makers tend to take more risks, ands those risks tend to be the most memorable moments in film for me.

I'd like to suggest perhaps a hybrid idea for TH-cam or another platform, to encourage that higher level of commitment with higher quality content. What if there was a subscription option where if you subscribe to this channel, then when you are watching their videos, youtube doesn't suggest any other content to you until the video is over. Kind of a way of saying to the algorithm, "I really like the content from this channel, and when I click on it, I want to watch it without distractions." Perhaps even some kind of membership tier. I've thought for a while that youtube should have a built-in channel membership perk where if you join a channel, and pay however much per month, then you don't see any more ads when you are watching videos from that channel anymore. Like TH-cam Premium, but channel-specific. Channel Premium Members. No ads, and no video suggestions while watching a video, not until that video is over.

You alluding to the old studio system is insightful, I think, because that is exactly what we are watching re-form. Disney, Netflix, etc ARE vertically integrating in the same way, owning every step in the process from production to marketing to release and platform, and I'm sure TH-cam would LOVE to be the same way. Currently they have the platform and the audience bit much less control over the IP and creators. I'm sure they're LOVINGthe trend toward consolidation.
It is worth noting, however, that the " Streaming Studio System"that is establishing itself is precisely what is CAUSING the issue you pointed out in the start: audiences only watching the same regurgitated formulas and not leaving space for anything fresh. Turning TH-cam into more of a respectable machine is unlikely to produce fresh indie films and is more likely to produce more Marvel. But. The "content creators" will more universally make fucking loads of cash and respect.

    • @lerualnaej5917

Great question. I am pitching a world where TH-cam doesn't show suggested videos. When you watch Stranger Things there's no bar to the side with 20 other shows you can watch instead. - Hayden

@@EditingPodcast I'd love that. All the major streamers (HBO Max, Netflix, Disney+, Apple+, etc.) are brands. They are in control of the storytelling experience and the user interface experience on their apps. TH-cam is also a brand, which as you talked about invites everyone to contribute any content from poop to gold. But they don't allow the content creators to customize the user interface experience for their audience. Perhaps there's a compromise. If I go visit your channel, you should be able to control how it looks and feels, i.e. no side bar of suggested videos. (side note: I think that's what Vimeo tried to do) TH-cam then becomes a portal into other brands. Because, TH-cam is like Amazon, anyone can publish a book. But once you pick up that book, the creator controls the reading experience.

The thing I enjoy about this movie the most is that even though it is very thought provoking and do touch some very deep subjects, Their approach was still very light-hearted and fun.
Such themes presented on the movie would easily be very dark and gloomy.
This is why humor in MCU does not really bother me because they could potentially be the same as this movie was, Unfortunately even with Taika Waititi, Whom always did a amazing job balancing humor with darker narrative such as Boy and Jojo Rabbit, They don't seem to get it right like this movie did...
Which is probably because of their already established formula.

You need to check Kris Antoinette YT channel, not the most frequent creator, but she turns a 3min tutorial into a 15min video with a story and attention to detail that is nuts, and it worked, I always end up watching all of it, she even has recurring characters !!

Great movie... however the everything is nihilistic but you can find meaning is like putting both feet in mid air and calling it solid ground. As long as you switch off you brain and realise the concepts are incoherent the actually filmmaking is a lot of fun.

The ironic thing is that the style of video that the TH-cam algorithm likes the most is adrenaline-fuelled, deliberately ending before your appetite is sated rather than leaving the viewer satisfied; and it is this same adrenaline that the viewer seeks to sate through watching another video, which also keeps them in an unsettled state that increases the likelihood of their mind wandering rather than relaxing and investing in the story being shared with them. This is ironic because this state of alertness which is designed to boost engagement, also encourages a person to switch between platforms in order to find the wholly satisfying conclusion needed to leave a state of algorithmically-generated stress. By setting these terms with its algorithm, TH-cam is conditioning the viewer to not expect to feel fully sated and rewarded by their platform.
TH-cam has created a stimulus-led algorithm, but the algorithm lacks periodic circuit-breaker prioritisation; if the tension-cycle of films without a wholly satisfying conclusion goes on for enough cycles then it is necessary to leave, or to find someone who can successfully defy the algorithm to supply a true feeling of a satisfying conclusion which breaks the tension cycle. A Hollywood movie does come with the expectation that it will conclude in a way which fully rewards its viewers’ emotional and intellectual commitment to the project.
If you think of those machines at the arcade which gradually push a heap of 10p coins into the trays where the winner can collect them: sometimes none fall, and sometimes a few fall; the few deliver a bit of a reward so you might have a few more goes, but eventually you realise that the promise of a large amount of coins falling into the collection tray is not going to be delivered upon, so you leave for an experience that will leave you feeling satisfied.
