Absolutely loved the episode. Thank you! 😍 I managed to find the books on the table 📚👇(top to bottom): 1. Steal Like An Artist - Austin Kleon 2. In The Blink Of An Eye - Walter Murch (2nd edition) 3. Making the Cut at Pixar - Bill Kinder and Bobbie O'Steen 4. Cut to the Monkey: A Hollywood Editor’s Behind-the-Scenes Secrets to Making Hit Comedies - Roger Nygard
Stumbled upon this video when looking for an additional video editor and storyteller for our channel and got completely and totally sucked in to not only this video but binged 6 of them. Learned a LOT, and love the suggestion of being focused and a master of one instead of being a jack of all traits. Funny enough watching Missing right now with my wife because we saw your interview with the editors of the film and were just so blown away. Subscribed as there's so much we are learning about how we should be hiring and thinking about editors for our TH-cam channel. P.S. would love to hire you, but you already know that hahaha
As a teacher for film and editing, this is such great content to refer my students to! Thank you so much for providing a realm for myself, other editors and aspiring filmmakers to come to learn these skills in such an entertaining way!
I don't really have the money to go to school for editing, I'm pretty self taught and got some good gigs but I KNOW there's another level that I haven't reached yet. What are some people that you recommend?

Love the podcast. I went to filmschool in LA, its hands down one of the best ways to meet people and build relationships, especially if its a hands on film school. I agree if someone does not have the funds just to go out and make films. Quick example of this, I worked on a student film for free outside my film class the week before I started film school actually, I met a cinematographer that later introduced me to his friend which is Kevin Birou Spielbergs assistant editor at Amblin Entertainment. eventually he edited a film of mine. But I likely would not have met him if I was not in that film school. Making content for youtube is like going to the gym for a filmmaker.
This has been fantastic! I am here because I am a Stay and had seen Jordans reaction videos to Straykids M/Vs. I stuck around because his perspective is so insightful. Can't wait until the next podcast about Art of the Cut
I LOVE that this exists! I edit all of my own videos and am quite proud of my work, but also always know there's more to learn! This is going to be a great way to get there!
I’m so glad you started this podcast! It’s a gold mine for someone who wants to become a better editor. In fact, if anyone comes to me & asks “how can I get better at editing?” I’ll point them straight to this
gosh as someone who's gonna graduate soon and is planning to study film production in uni, I can't even begin to describe how valuable this podcast is to me!! It has helped me think more about how I can improve, what issues to anticipate and overall just get excited about it, thanks guys!
32:00 this depends how big your channel is. Hayden talks about content not being good enough, which is why you’re not getting views. But you have to rely on TH-cam serving your content to the correct viewers. If you’re a small channel, or changed your niche - this takes time
Stanley kubrick said something along the lines that a film is done in the editing! One of the biggest directors understood the importance of editing ! I wish he were still here. I feel he would embrace TH-cam and its artist and would come on all these gear and nerd talk podcasts!
Re: the 5 second hook... My favorite film openings are simply a longer version of this. My two favorite films are "The Matrix" and "Indiana Jones" and both open with a "mini" movie that just pulls me right in. (PS: I'm learning SO much from you guys about how to tell my stories...things to think about, consider, recognize, reconnoiter, rewrite, re-think. No, you won't see it reflected in my content now but, mmm, the future! I'm being given so many tools to paint my stories with that now the experimentation begins, the Frankenstein's tragic monster mess of editing will ensue...but so be it! I'm now on my editing journey, this story telling journey. Thanks!)
I was quite confused about my decision to take on a career in Filmmaking and editing. But this video gave me clarity. Thank you for such amazing content.
I’ve been struggling as a creator until I came across your main TH-cam channel, ever since then I have learned how to edit and I’m still learning but your skills have come in handy
I hope you get to interview huge Hollywood filmmakers as well! Id love to see you interview paul Thomas Anderson, george lucas, david lynch, Quentin Tarantino!
I edit for easily 5 years now. But never in a professional setting. My own channel is the closest I got to "professional" since it is monetized. But while I have learned how to get views I have still not figured out how to make the viewers happy. But I keep digging and learning. I am sure eventually I will figure it out. That's why I watch your podcast to understand more about the process. This is already the second video on this channel and I am also watched Hillier Smiths' videos to get better. One step at a time. This knowledge doesn't just help me but I also teach it to my editors I am working with to get better in our niche.
This is our new favorite podcast! Thank you for taking the time to teach other people who are passionate about editing. Looking forward to future episodes!
I think it is important to know how to do it all, in the sense that for example your cinematography will get better if you understand what the director needs and what the editor needs. Specialise in one area but know things from the others as well.
That’s crazy that Mr. Beast is now the one sponsoring videos. But if you are looking for editors, this is the place to go. I have really enjoyed binging on this podcast. You guys compliment each other so well.
Great conversation guys. Shooting and editing is equally rewarding because it removes the risk of getting poorly shot footage. When I'm shooting or interviewing I'm thinking about the edit - What areas to double-down on? What areas can we skip?
I did not study film but went to school on and off for many years. However, (this is more dependent on personality) but as I am getting older I am finding out it’s good to have a mix between traditional education, self-study, and learning from more experienced people.
I agree, having an active TH-cam channel can mean as much if not more than a reel because it shows practitionership. But it's best to have a reel too just to make it more shareable to prospective clients than them navigating through your entire channel. I've gone down the path of video editing by accident when I was helping out a friend with his videos, and that led to me editing more videos for him and then referrals which led to more referrals and so on. While my channel may not seem successful, I wouldn't have gotten my career in editing and shooting had it not been for making a bunch of videos that only a handful of people have seen. So for those of you who are looking to get started with editing but you don't know anything or anybody, just make your own videos. Don't worry about the numbers; just work on getting a little bit better with each video. Eventually you'll have a pretty sizeable body of work to pull from to assemble a reel that you can send out.
I love this! I am so happy this podcast is a thing!! Thank you for the awesome info! *Been in the youtube industry for the past year and still have lots to learn* , can't wait for more videos you post!!
i almost never leave the house without a fidget cube in my pocket so to see the fidget cube first thing in this video was very validating lmao - love to see it i just graduated from college in the spring and trying to figure out how to market myself has been difficult but this has been motivating me to try some new things, put myself out there some more. editing is a huge passion of mine but i dont talk about it/post about it very often.
i'll be honest both are equally important. the more learning and the more people to learn from the better. i have been learning final cut for about a year prior to film school and yes, youtube learning is much faster and you can generally learn things at a more efficient rate, but in class I get feedback from a professional which has been so valuable. also the teacher does all kinds of things i don't see others doing in their videos which has helped my workflow as well. having someone around that is good at story telling techniques is amazing too. editing and making things flashy and cool looking just isn't enough. knowing the exact right moment to make a transition etc can really up the quality. in the end just utilize as many resources as possible.
Already one of my fav podcasts on TH-cam! Keep killin it you guys
Yay! Editing Podcast. Let’s go! 👏
I’m a psychologist but I’m learning editing to level up my TH-cam channel. I love this podcast. Thank you.
great approach

That final part was the best, realistic. Study and read books.
As a film student here in Sacramento, who is also looking to do TH-cam Seriously this video has been incredibly helpful thank you guys!

Nothing but straight facts being dropped here! The part about egos definitely hit home for me, I've run into that a few times with my last client 😅
I was quite confused about my decision to take on a career in Filmmaking and editing.
But this video gave me clarity.
Thank you for such amazing content.

If anyone is watching this from the east coast go to Full Sail University! It’s an incredible school for anything creative.
Interesting! It’s really nice to have more vocal video editors in this era! It’s time for us to stop staying humble inside our editing caves haha!!
