    Comparing the Sony a6400 and the Fuji X-T30 for both photography and video was a ton of fun. These are two of the newest and most popular beginner mirrorless cameras from Sony and Fuji and they offer an outstanding value.
    There are many similarities and some important differences between the two mirrorless cameras, so I will cover the strengths and weaknesses of the #a6400 and the #xt30 for both photography and video, and compare everything from body type, framerate and resolution, autofocus, lens options, audio features, and ergonomics.
    I will also look at the #sony a6400 and the Fuji X-T30 in terms of battery life, timelapse, viewfinders, LCd screen and recording limit.
    And finally, let’s see if we can decide which camera is best for you.

    This review/comparison was top notch. I am getting into photography and I even had purchased the Sony Xperia 1 ii and was planning on getting a Sony camera to stay in the ecosystem. Having said that, you brought up two things that are important to me, the quality of the image and the availability of alternate glass. Being a beginner and not having much knowledge in post touchups I need all the help I can get. So the X-T30 is the one for me.
    Thank you very much.

    Thank you so much for this comparison! I've been agonizing for months over which of these to pick. If I look at it purely objectively, the a6400 ticks more boxes for me, especially in video. But I keep coming back to the XT-30 because I have a slight preference for the Fuji color science and I think the silver top color scheme is so pretty it gets me excited to take the camera out and shoot. As a beginner, that might be a big factor for me. I think I'll rent them before making a final decision.

    Excellent video! I did this exact comparison about a month ago and went for the a6400 as it has some weather sealing. Also I like the auto focusing a bit more as it works so well while taking pictures of my kids. Both are excellent cameras but the weather sealing just gives me a bit more peace of mind when I'm out shooting.

    • @TechGearTalk

      @@TechGearTalk I presume that it would boost the price of the Fuji a bit. i chose the sony 6400 because it’s slightly more compact and seems more ergonomic and because of the the video/selfie advantages (most important not having a limit on video recording) and also that it has a flip screen!

    Hands down best comparison - and I think I watched almost all YT videos comparing these cameras. Thanks for the great work - especially the strengths summary at the end.
    I already bought the A6400, for photo and vlogging, waiting to be delivered today or tomorrow, but I’m still unsure if I made the right purchase: I like the more intuitive interface of Fuji, color science, better lens (I guess...?) and the fact that they pay more attention to firmware improvements; on the other hand Sony offers vertical-flip screen, no rec time limit, no heating issues, and slightly better AF. I’m a bit inclined towards Fuji because for someone that is just starting in photography like me the more intuitive interface seems to be important - but at the same time I do plan to use it for long videos.
    Questions:
    1) Could you show us the option of recording on Fuji using external device? I didn’t get it, you connect a USB drive to the camera...? (If that’s the case it would be a perfect workaround for me, because for long videos I’ll always be in-house)
    2) I’d love a comparison side by side of both cameras, same stills and videos - because my impression is that the photos you took with the Fuji are more beautiful, maybe because you were more “inspired” by the equip? :-)
    3) Any tips, ideas, suggestions to help me with my dilemma? For now my plan is to just use the A6400 for a few months and see what happens, but I’m really considering the Fuji “system”

    Thanks for a great in-depth review. It's funny that in 2021, looking at a 2019 review still has huge relevance. I want to replace my travel compact camera and am not rushing in to do so. A small, entry to mid level mirrorless camera, like the ones you have reviewed here, may well be a better option that going Canon G5x Mk II or the Sony RX100 VII. Sure there is the interchangeable lens issue, but a kit lens (16-50 or 18-55) will still do the job cost effectively, with possibly a better camera. So thanks a lot. I am a Canon user, but looking at Sony or Fuji, instead of the EOS M50 Mk II, is certainly worth thinking about. Lastly, would you place the Nikon Z50 in the mix when comparing with Sony and Fuji?? Or would it take 3rd place overall? Thanks again.

    Great review man, i subscribed to your channel mounth ago! I wanted to buy this week a6400, but just saw your video and now you made it harder for me too decide. I read most of the comments and really appreciate your effort you put in, the only thing i would like to know and didnt find the answer anywhere is which camera is easier to control. I like the manual control buttons on Fuji, i guess is much easier to control iso, shutter, focus when you are video recording and make fast changes! What do you think? What i look in the camera is to make videos with cinematic look, what lens would you suggest for that cinematic look and what gimbal would you suggest me. My budget is somewhere around good 2000 dollars!

    • @TechGearTalk
      @TechGearTalk  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there and welcome to the channel. Once you learn about how the Fuji controls work, you'll be good to go. I think the Sony is easier to control because the buttons and dials are a little more intuitive right off the bat. If you need unlimited recording -> sony. If you need to power the camera via usb -> sony.
      For the first lens, I always recommend you start with: th-cam.com/video/z-x-d-K9Jfw/w-d-xo.html Hope that helps!

    I am currently contemplating between below camera,
    Usage: 90%travelling(cinematic video) 20% wedding/events close up shots.
    1. Sony A6400
    2. Fujifilm Xt30
    3. Fujiflim Xt20 - kit lenses and 55-230mm
    XT30 is the most expensive between these 3, Im interested in Sony as well but the varieties of lens can be bit expensive if im not mistaken for Sony rather than fuji lens and for XT20 is the cheapest and you get that extra lense but i’m not sure if it stills relevant for 2020. Hi. That depends on what you're shooting. Most people go with the 50mm. The 85 is also good if you're ok with the longer focal length. If you need something wider, the 20mm is really nice. There is also a 35mm with is close to a 50mm on full frame. Then you have to choose whether you want to pay extra for OSS. Hope that helps.

      Tech Gear Talk regarding the cannon m6 mark 2, I’ve read that the 4K video quality isn’t that great compared to the Fuji and Sony. However in your video, the quality looks decent. What are your thoughts on that? Also how bad is the rolling shutter on the a6400? I’ve read a few people complaining about it

    • @TechGearTalk
      @TechGearTalk  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The M6MKII isn't "as good" as the Fuji or Sony, but it's plenty good for what I use it for (I'm not shooting the next starwars here). I normally look at overall user experience once I get beyond an acceptable level of quality. Does that make sense?
      As far as rolling shutter - I don't really fling my camera in fast pans, so it's never really been an issue for me.

  • @electrichimp
    @electrichimp 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I would say the sony + sigma combo ends up being significantly more appealing is you're looking for bang for the buck. Fuji's better video quality, controls, and film simulations are really REALLY tempting... But the fuji system is pretty locked down to fuji lenses, which are awesome but twice or three times the price to the also awesome sigmas.

    • @TechGearTalk
      @TechGearTalk  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Sigma lenses are definitely a great option. I think there are still low-cost options from Fuji, but I'm waiting for Sigma to make the 16,30,56 1.4 in an X-mount!!!

    • @electrichimp
      @electrichimp 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tech Gear Talk from what i’ve seen in b&h, not really a lot of third party options for fuji x mount that are fast and offer electronic controls, if sigma went to x mount it would be a done deal. Again, this is talking about bang for the buck... because Fuji certainly has awesome quality lenses, just too closely priced to full frame lenses imo... Which for me defeat one of the two mayor reasons for going aps-c (price, the other being size)

    I didnt expect that Fuji is so good. I want to buy a camera as a beginner mostly for photos and sometimes videos. I lean mostly towards Sony and lately also Fuji but it can be another brand too.
    I have some options: Sony a6400 , Fuji XT30 , Fuji XT20
    For me important:
    + to take photos from fast objects/animals/sport
    + to have more options to find better/more affordable lenses
    + ease of use
    + touch screen for focussing
    + better app/connection to smartphone
    + to have 4k ( not so important, can be with 10 minutes limit )
    Which of these cameras do you recommend? Or do you have another recommendation?

      @@TechGearTalk Hi,
      this is my second day with my sony a6400 with the 16-50mm kit lens. I must say that I’m very beginner with little knowledge. I set the camera up with a setup guide from a youtuber. It’s totaly fine.
      I compared it to my smartphone Pixel 3 and these are my thoughts about a6400 with 16-50. You may notice that Im beginner and use 16-50mm kit lens.
      Maybe can I help anyone that want to buy a camera as a beginner.
      Pros:
      + a little bit sharper photo with good light conditions
      + better/ more realistic colors
      + better for fast objects ( cars, children, animals etc. )
      Cons:
      - the sharpness is not enough to say much better then Pixel 3
      - night photos are not even close to the night sight of Pixel 3
      My conclusion:
      • for now there is only one reason for me as advantage from camera against smartphone and it is to be able to take photos from fast objects
      • for me there is no reason to buy any camera if you dont want to learn about photography or dont have enough time. ( I think ) you should be ready to buy extra lenses to maximize your results. Another thing you should consider is photo editing , which costs money and time. Yes, photography is an expensive hobby but I would test the camera for now with kit lenses and with free editing softwares.
      Maybe it’s better to have a compact camera like RX100 VII instead as beginner. For now Im not sure what should I do :)

    • @TechGearTalk
      @TechGearTalk  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good feedback. I agree, if you're not going to learn about photography - a phone is good enough. The phone is doing all the work for you (but it is restricted by a much smaller sensor). You could take excellent night photos with your camera (with the correct settings) but again, that requires understanding exposure. The phone (once again) does computational photography so it's a completely different process.

    Awesome review! I’m currently deciding between these two and can’t really pick. I’m only shooting stills on my Nikon D5100 and no specific type really, I enjoy shooting landscapes to portraits. I’m considering getting a XT30 kit with both a XC 15-45 and 50-230mm lens included or just go with the 18-55mm XF Lens. I’m also kind of partial to the design of the Fuji. I also want to use this camera for years before I replace it, so the potential of lens upgrade for a reasonable cost is important. What are your thoughts?

      Well, in that case, you have to make a choice - which will probably come down to losing low-light performance. You will need a fast lens for that which will be expensive.

      I would then get the M50 with the kit lens. Once you use it, figure out what focal length you want for your next lens and but a fast lens. th-cam.com/video/z-x-d-K9Jfw/w-d-xo.html

      @@TechGearTalk I totally understand. I know the lenses are super expensive. I could get the camera now and save for a new lens next. If I were to go that route, would you have a recommendation for which camera? I know you are working on a review of the Nikon Z 50. I am leaning a bit that way since i already have a couple of decent lenses for my Nikon dslr that I could get an adapter for? Maybe even a Nikon D5600? Oy vey, lol. But I am very drawn to the good things I have heard about the Sony a6400, and I love the colors and smoothness of the Canon photos (800D) I have seen. Do you have a preference or suggestion?
      I am so appreciative of your taking the time to answer our questions, not to mention the reviews and videos you make. Can't say it enough, but yours are simply the very best. Thank you so much!

    I am not into colour grading stuff for movies so is the Fuji Film mode the answer to my needs if I want to create “cinematic “ feel?

    Hello what Camera would be better for taking black and white vintage looking high quality sharp photos in lowlight and 4k videos? because I want my photos to look like the photographer Josiah Van Dien work on instagram (he’s a photographer for Shawn Mendes). I know he uses the Canon 5D Mark IV with a Canon 24-70mm f2.8 lens but I was looking for something more affordable and compact that produces similar results. Do you have any suggestions?

      Thank you for the kind words. There isn't a difference that I found significant. That is not a deciding factor for me when I'm selecting one of these over the other. Which camera did you like better?

      @LawrenceLivingstone 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TechGearTalk No worries, it's one of the most complete reviews I've seen :)! The Fuji looks like amazing and I love its colors and its quality, but I think I'll buy the a6400 that seems it has a really close quality, because I use the camera for travel videos and for vlog ad I need that the camera can resist better to rainy conditions, (and for vlogs autofocus and flip out screen are super important)... Thank you for your help by the way, greeting from Italy! :)

    Great video. so I shoot mostly landscape photography , which camera is best for scenic shots and handles low light during morning and evening best? . Or do u recommend another?

    • @saifaldin_
      @saifaldin_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Sony has a slight advantage in terms of retaining details in the shadows compared to the Fuji. Also, some weather sealing might be beneficial for outdoor shooting. If you don’t need fast & accurate AF (like in landscape) these 2 are very close actually. It comes down to what lens pairings you’re planning to go with, as well as personal preference in terms of handling, interface etc.

    Hi there just subscribed to your channel, good work! Was wondering what you would recommend between these two cameras for a dog training business? I also am interested in having good photography because I often takes pics of the dogs but I also wanted to start to get into it a little - more specifically portraits but I'm a camper/hiker/traveler.. so a little of everything. Thanks!

    Amazing video as always Sagi! Hoping you are able to do a review on the new Sony 16-55 2.8 lens. I am wondering if I should buy the Sigma 1.4 trio (16mm, 30mm, 56mm) or just this G Masters lens

      @@TechGearTalk Gotcha! I saw the one DXO review article that mentioned it but I think they mixed it up with ff sony cameras because lot of other sources said this camera didn't have BSI (which explains slightly better low light performance on X-t30..

      It doesnt matter too much as they both do great in low light still but I remember this being a point of criticism on the sony a6400 in some reviews, as I remember people wondering why sony produces bsi apsc sensors to give to fuji but doesnt apply it to their own apsc lineup.

    I have learned a great deal from your videos. Thank you. I’m looking for the best mirrorless or dslr for around $1200 (body only) to record my nieces. One is a gymnast and the other does local community theater. I will be purchasing a 70-200mm f2.8 lens for whatever body I choose as well. I’m looking for eye autofocus that functions in 4k. Some have suggested Sony a6600 (I’m a little concerned about the rolling shutter) others have suggested Canon M6 Mark ii (some have said eye autofocus doesn’t work in 4k) Any help would be appreciated.
