I just bought a 550p after wanting a sub for decades. I have it paired with a 70's Marantz 2225 and 1973 Klipsch Heresy's. It's taken some playing with to get it sounding right in my vaulted ceiling room but I am happy I got it in my system now. It really fills out the sound.
I bought 2 550’s and have enjoyed them a lot. I pretty much just use them for gaming and movies. It’s really nice to be able to see the inside of the box and the driver. I was curious but didn’t want to mess with it. Like you were saying, if something were to happen with the driver or amp you could always upgrade the speaker and hook it to a home audio receiver. That box is solid.
Great review, I bought the 550p a month ago and love it! My crossover control is very stiff as well but it helped to pull the nob out just a hair as it seems to rub. Can't wait for your upgrade video, good luck.
You can always go for the used market. Plenty of Paradigm, Mirage, Energy, HSU and SVS subs around $200 in excellent condition. There are screws a bit further in that hold that case on. I have a Martin Logan sub built similar and you just unscrew the inner screws.
For sure! The used market is an option if you can find a decent deal, but where I'm located everyone is asking maybe $50-$100 bucks less than MSRP for used gear. Not quite the "deal" that most people had in mind, but they are some deals out there. You just gotta be diligent at finding them!
I saw this when I was trying to find some Studio speakers on their site on clearance (570’s) and looked at some other reviews. One had mentioned swapping the driver out for something else and gave a few car audio sub examples. I want to get two subs on a budget (prefer sub $500) but that limits me. There are a few more expensive options that I was looking at but I would either be using a credit card or just buying one right now and one more later. So this might be my best bet. Was considering Emotiva SE12 and XS8, SVS SB-1000, Def Tech Descend DN8, and Jamo C 912. Oh and found on Monoprice some open box Monolith M-10 V2’s for $350 each. All are decent options I believe but none are quite at the prices where I would for sure pull the trigger. This one on the other hand is in that price where I can get two. I can always budget for better drivers down the road. And if the amp is ever an issue, I’m sure I can find a suitable replacement to fit the enclosure still. Having some experience with car audio box building, I figure I could always figure something out here too. But as a starting point the $380 plus tax is well under my goal of $500 (not including tax). Thanks for the video and I look forward to the others on this sub. I’ll go watch your other videos now too.
For the money the JBL 550P is very hard to beat! It offers tremendous value for money and the cabinet is a great base to start a nice DIY build from. Two of these subwoofers should out perform a single SB-1000 in bass performance. However the SB-1000 will have better bass tonality (more natural sounding) vs the JBL, but this can be fixed with a simple driver upgrade. My first subwoofer from SVS was a SB-1000 and I liked it very much, but I would take two JBL's over a single SB-1000 any day. Hope this helps!
Hey Mike another sub $500 subwoofer people seem to love the RSL speedwoofers, this is probably on the higher side of the budget subs but it may be good enough where you wouldn't need to upgrade it. Also did you see emotiva dropped the prices on alot of speakers and subwoofers? Like substantial! Lol they did that a few days after I bought my 550p. The SE12 is $270
@@joshdeakins1775 I appreciate the info. I have just recently been hearing about that and when I checked their site, apparently they do production runs or something? Because all of their products are sold out. I had a few more expensive subs on my original list but I’d rather have two subs than one sooner than later. I currently have an Energy ESW-C10 and in the somewhat weird space I’m using in my basement, two subs would fix a lot of those issues…and I don’t personally like having mismatched subs.
@@generationbehindhifi seeing the Monoprice Monolith M-10 V2 SPL vs frequency chart and seeing how flat that is and how low it can hit (THX certified sub too), makes me very interested in it and that is of course why the SB-1000 was on my original list as well. But again, I’m looking to do it as cheap as possible and if I can get two of these for just over $400 shipped, I’ll take it. I do appreciate the info and did find it helpful.
nah, you need to be able to access their plate amplifier. JBL SUBS have always punched well above the competition in the consumer market.. (their pro audio offerings are dismal tho). if they're ceiling the amplifier components from being accessed, then the sub is not a good value in the long run. the amount of times I've had to recap subwoofers and replace mosfets and transistors in subwoofers amps is not insignificant.. and the amount of times those have been JBL subwoofer is pretty sobering. unless you have the extended warranty for life, this sub will only last as long as the weakest (non-serviceable) component. but tbh, if they're enclosing it in a sealed container, I might actually take that as a challenge. So JBL doesn't want me lookin in their mystery box? ohh really?? where's my Dremel? 😈
These have been on sale for $189 for as long as I can remember. JBL has always done this where the give it a big MSRP, but the product is always on sale.
@@generationbehindhifi they were on sale often along with the other studio speakers, but $189 is the lowest I've seen them. An excellent deal. I bought 2 of them and another pair of studio 590s before they sold out.

Thanks! Yeah, I tried pulling the knob out on mine but couldn't get it to budge. No worries though. It's getting a new amplifier anyways. ;)

Mine just broke FWIW. Very light use, only music, about 2 years. Makes a nice table though.
