    Anyone who says disrespectful things towards Firemen need their head checked,these people put their lives on the line and will go into a burning house without hesitation to try and save your life! so with this said my hat goes off to all Firemen who risk their own lives to save someone else,these people should be paid a lot more then what they make for what they do! these are your true heroes not sports athletes!

      Thanks Buck !! Honestly, maybe we've been lucky, but I haven't heard too many negative comments in my 5 years. The worst one is when the older gentlemen want to know why we have to take the fire truck grocery shopping all the time. :-)

      @@aaronmichael7116 I see nothing wrong with that and it's likely saving them a lot of money on the long run while they get the right food to suit their needs. It's also a nice mental break for the fire fighting crew. I see them every single evening at my local supermarket and when they get a call they drop all their shopping and the store clerks are more than happy to hold all their groceries until they return. I even noticed the super market manager occasionally ringing the groceries through and paying the cost himself out of pocket because he was so happy for their work.

    To everyone complaining about the response time out the door. Every city has multiple stations and if they don't they will request mutual aid from a neighboring city or town. In Chicago that's no needed as there are plenty of stations to cover the city. THE station that Aerial Tower 1 is in wasn't the first due in, another station was and they respond accordingly on who's first due and all that. They will dispatch more companies if the alarms go up. It's Chicago's way of keeping the city covered even with a high rise fire. It's a a box alarm system with a specific number of units per alarm. It's not that complicated

    • @expertfireemsproductions.1218
      @expertfireemsproductions.1218 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      +Josh W interesting note about mutual aide, although don't know about Chicago, in Philadelphia they will not call mutual aid except on interstate bridges, water rescue assignments, and incidents that are on the border of another city. Philadelphia does not care if response times are too long, they will never call an outside agency even if the outside agency is 20 minutes closer than their own unit responding.

    CFD has a history of both tragedy and innovation. The aerial bucket, which most departments now have, was developed in Chicago. The Chief thought the buckets used by other city departments could work for the fire department. Chicago burned down and rebuilt in the late 1800s so residents are sensitive to fires and the tragedy it brings. The tragedy I remember was the Our Lady of Angels fire. 92 students and three nuns were killed. CFD did the best they could but most of the kids and nuns were killed before they even got there. I can't write about fire departments without remembering FDNY which became America's Department on 9-11. Their heroism that day showed the world how good and selfless America's firefighters are.

      That was the most tragic day in world history for firefighters (9/11). The perpetrators of that heinous crime have still never been brought to justice. They're just living in their mansions and high rise multi-$million dollar apartments, until they pass away peacefully.

      How could you say that holy moly, I think US sirens (FD and PD) are soooo much better than any european siren. Especially FD, so extremely effective, those screaming Qs and lovely airhorns, would love to have those over here as well.

    • @finnk1289
      @finnk1289 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@VWProductions1 Qs and airhorns... not. lovely. Deafening and merely annoying to residents.
      Hi-Lo/2-tone sirens, even when quieter, are proven to be just as effective.
      In New York Mount Sinai hospital uses hi-lo on all their ambulances. They haven't had any problems.
      I agree that the Q is kinda cool, but don't make it scream unless you're on the highway or otherwise want to deafen people.

      Nice nice nice...
      The grass is always greener on the other side isn't it :P
      Your trucks have fewer lights, and simpler light patterns. Which is actually just as safe and effective. And at night you turn down the brightness on the lights right? Compare that to here where the trucks are heavy overladen beasts that cannot drive fast enough and blindingly bright at night.

    The first Fire Commissioner for the city owned a ship building company and suggested the red and green light to determine which way the apparatus was oriented, much like a boat or plane. Now many people see the light as a remeberance to those who have fallen in the line of duty, this goes as well for the black over red paint scheme as well

    @ Alan Clarke. North American fire trucks are obviously designed differently so it's not always safe to drive too fast especially when these trucks are a lot bigger and heavier in weight. Also braking in high speeds with these trucks is not always easy due to the heavy weight in the back.

    • @KandiKlover
      @KandiKlover 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    So the squads in Chicago go on working fires and sometimes Stills if there the nearest rig. AT1 is a truck but has a pipe on the tip of the main and it can only pump water out of the pipe. Other trucks dont have pumps on them and the Tower Ladders do and can only pump out of the pipe too. Chicago Fire is a Hollywood tv show so people that arent firefighters can understand it more.

    Im not sure what you mean. If you are asking if a rescue truck is called a rescue or a truck, then irs both. It just depends on the equipment needed and the department. Here where I live we have rescue squads. The Rescue squads don't do anything fire related, they just specialize in confined space rescues, Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA), and other search and rescues related stuff and they also respond to medical calls when the fire department isn't available or EMS isn't available.

    they're the Rescue Squad. so they have equipment for almost anything. they are a rolling toolbox. they deliver hands and tools. they can do the same functions as a truck company, but just without the actual ladder on the apparatus. the squad just extricates. and some trucks can have pumps. they're called "Quints", they have a pump like a pumper, but a ladder (Areal or Tower), so they can serve as either piece depending on how it's needed

    Question for the guys over in Chicago, an EMS plan gets more ambulances, but at what stage would they request this? In this instance does it mean multiple casualties or is it just covering the bases? In any case this is quite an impressive response from the Chicago FD.

      Not sure if you already got an answer... A still alarm in a high-rise brings 4 engines & 4 trucks, the squad, command van 2 ambulances & several chiefs, if there is a fire it goes to the next alarm, still & box, 4 more engines & trucks it also goes to an EMS Plan 1: 4 more ambulances, the plan is automatic w/ the still & box, this is only on high-rise incidents

    It's one of the few (if not only now)aerial ladders in the CFD with a waterway. Most of the rear mount ladders you see there are "truck" companies. All ladder / no waterway. The "aerial" and "tower" designation indicates elevated waterways. Tower Companies 5 ,10,14 (for example) are all aerial platforms that can be used as water towers, just as Aerial 1 can.

Because boats had a red light on the left side and a green light on the right side, just so you know when you see the lights the boat was facing you. Its also a Chicagoland tradition too, most towns in Chicagoland have green lights on the captains side of the rig.

      Schwummiwumi It depends where you are. The Chicago area uses red lights. The green lights on the right side of the rig are tradition there. But you can also find trucks with green lights in Maryland. Typically Some police departments, county and state agencies use blue only. The most police agencies use red-blue. Fire/ EMS uses red or red-blue.. depends where you are. Red lights are better visible in many situations. White lights are very intense and they let you know it's the front. Ambers usually let you know it's the back.

    A technical question from Germany: is the sound of the siren (the pitch level) somehow linked to the speed of the fire truck or is it just random?

    • @VFVFCo68
      @VFVFCo68 10 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      No, all sirens (electronic and electro-mechanical) and self contained units that are usually controlled by a toggle switch, button, or foot pedal.

    • @tobycameron317
      @tobycameron317 10 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Additional detail: this type of siren is called a "Q", manufactured by Federal Signal. Chicago uses the electronic version, the eQ2B.

    • @IVXXVIIMM
      @IVXXVIIMM 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +VFVFCo68 there are many different sirens and manufacturers. Definitely not all sirens are controlled with foot pedal. Generally only Q sirens are. And for 1Argon's question, yes it's random. May depend on whoever made the siren, but the siren pitch doesn't correspond to the truck.

    • @centralnewyorkresponses7887
      @centralnewyorkresponses7887 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Toby Cameron though a real Q is how a traditional fire truck sounds. EQ makes the trucks in my opinion less traditional fire trucks. Wish it was a US law to have a real Q on your fire trucks. If the people don’t like the amount they use, tough tomatoes. More Q and horn the better.

    Did you hear what they said? they said they were the 4th due truck meaning by the time they got there there would be 3 other trucks there. Also if you read the description it also explains why it took so long, and when they arrived there's already a line of engines and trucks already there. So yea 8 minutes from the south loop to the north is pretty good time.

    • @terrymartin6892
      @terrymartin6892 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The crews will fight it from the inside--off of the stairwells w/ 2.5 in lines of the standpipes in the stairwells.

      @mattleitch7265 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      In a high rise fire you bring the fight to the fire. That’s why they sent so many units. You gotta carry everything up. Unique and difficult fights.

    • @centralnewyorkresponses7887
      @centralnewyorkresponses7887 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cui finesse standpipe. Engine pumps water through the pipes up to the floor below the fire. Then they can stretch the line up the stairs. Sometimes the same floor as the fire if the building is big.

    Chicago is plenty big enough, and has 98 stations, 96 engines, 61 trucks, 4 squads. Over 4000 firefighters. But sure other neighboring towns could provide fire support if needed, so in a smaller town, you might get "Mutual aid assistance" from neighboring towns, sometimes at the fire, sometimes at the station.

    It's probably connected to the station lighting. The lights on the front of all city houses (and most suburban) are red on the right of the doors and green on the left, as you face the house. Just as in aeronautical and nautical applications. The accepted story goes that a commissioner in the late 1800's had a connection to a steamship line on Lake Michigan and carried over the nautical theme to the houses.

    Its not about being a hero, and its certainly not about the danger (I love that the advances in training and equipment have made our job so much safer than it used to be). Its about getting to help people, and its rarely in dramatic fashion. Its usually something small, but when you do those things every day, you really feel it. Im not sure why you have this animosity towards firefighters, or what your doing even watching this video, since you seem to despise us so much.

      High rises are anything that exceeds the capabilities of your longest ladder. For example, if you worked in a district that had no trucks, but only a engine that had ground ladders anything 3 stories or higher would be considered a high rise because the longest they would carry would be a 24' extension ladder, and the average story of a building is ~10 feet

But as far as app they used reserves to fill in that is most common in big cities, use reserves and call backs.
