I was eating some cherries this morning and decided to see how to start the seeds... found you! Very happy I did & looking forward to your take on gardening :-)
I do a lot of cuttings. And you always loose a certain percentage. But don't look at as a loss. That dead plant goes into the compost to continue on the circle of life. The growth of that tiny seed created more organic matter to feed future plants. Nothing is a loss.
That's a great take on it David! You could say it locked up a tiny bit of carbon also 😀 I got a load of bitter oranges sprouting now, can't wait to use them as root stocks and try and graft my lime and finger lime on to them, will be alot of fun.
Most DEFINITELY graft!! Get some nice healthy scions from nice sweet cheeries. Yes, leave one of them to grow as a wild variety and let us know how they taste!

It s not a joke with cherries,if the soil holds to much humidity. Next are apricots,then peaches. 3 years ago i have lost a big apricot,this year a super masive cherry tree ,both killed by to much water in the root area. With these trees its better not to irrigate at all if you don t know what you re doing.
Love the content! I would say leaving one to grow wild would be worthwhile if for no other reason than to provide an educational content source. I've never seen such a comparison myself and that would be interesting.

Yes, fill us in on your hand injury Alex. It always sucks to lose a plant, I just lost 2 streptocarpus plants. Possibly due to over fertilizing. We all make mistakes now and then. I forgot that the potting mix I used had fertilizer in it and I kept fertilizing them every 2 weeks with orchid food. Lesson learned! How's your carnivorous plants doing? Mine are doing just fine so far.
Yeah it happens Tom. My carnivorous plants are doing well, all my vfts are in full flower, I let them all flower this year, so some of the smaller ones are struggling and flowering takes its toll. I was not well with the hand, and also away in the north so by the time I realized, the stalks were a few inches and I thought "hey what the hell" the ones that die, die...lol. I have too many anyways, thinking to get a big styrofoam lunch box and multi plant some in that to just save space, also they very deep so the roots should love it. Nepenthes are doing well also. I'll try and make a quick update for them, can't invest too much time in carnivorous plant vids tho as they just don't get enough traction and if I'm trying to build the channel to a point where I can do this full time I need to focus on more mass appeal. I'll try and keep them basic so I can kick it out now and again with not much time investment
@@GreenthumbsGarden They banned Styrofoam where I am now so no more growing in those 20 0z. white cups. Had to switch to solo cups for now for my Flytraps. I have to invest in some nice white pots next I guess.
yes I think they have here, I found a great supplier for the very large cups that were perfect. But they don't supply anymore. I understand it, in fact id like to see all plastic done way with so I cant complain...lol. Problem is here the sun is so strong the Styrofoam does not last long, even some plastic pots just brake up, my plant labels just get destroyed.
If it happens again, try to give them a shot of peroxide, or first soak the root ball in warm water for a couple of hours like asparagus roots before you plant them. Not sure it will work, but peroxide helped my plants that had root rot, I poured it undiluted right into the pot and dirt. They sprang right back. If there's a hint of life left in them, the soaking may work to revive them. Epsom salt also gives a burst of energy after they've revived. Thank you for the video.
I have 5 very vigorous cherry seedlings that were started indoors last winter , and just up potted into 2 gallon pots. I'm considering growing 2 out to see what kind of fruit they produce and possibly grafting the other three.
One of the best cherries I ever had was a seed grown accidental lot of cherries that came from a Bing cross to Rainier or stella. Can't exactly remember, but it was an amazingly sweet cherry that was a big cherry that didn't crack and was grown in hot humid conditions. Unfortunately it was too close to the road and was hit by a truck and knocked it over and tore it up. Tried to save it, but it died and didn't make it. So unfortunate it didn't make it. I loved that tree. A few of the other cherries got pulled up over the years and some died. That was the only survivor out of the lot that grew to produce for a good while till it was hit by that truck. They were growing in a gravely area where a bunch of pebble rock was put in a small mound. I wonder if that would work for sprouting nut style seed well.

It's just a citrus potting soil mix that's for Mediterranean plants also, it has more drainage, bits of fired clay also from the garden center. Just look for a good very well draining soil, it could just be a poor plant also.
It's very nice to see that some survived the root rot. Since you're looking into grafting, why don't you go straight on almonds instead of cherry? In my island, Cyprus, we always graft these on almond trees. Almond tree roots are much stronger than cherries, much more root rot resistant.

Is it possible to grow an "Evans Bali Cherry Tree" from seeds, with the tree that sprouts being a true Evans Bali Cherry Tree? I have seen Evans Bali Cherry Tree seeds available online, but am wondering if I would actually end up with a true Evans Bali.
My presumption is that they are still fruit trees, fitted to be in real soil in garden, to grow their roots really deep down!!! Are you planing to place them from the pot into garden and put some mycorrhiza fungi and good compost in the roots and cover with wood chops or mulch? Maybe besides genetics, plants also respond to environment and conditions and what can make a tree happier than to spread roots deep down freely? I am planing to make a garden one day and watch a lot. Your opinion is greatly appreciated and very interesting to hear!!!!
I would love to place them in the ground and add some mycorrhiza fungi for sure! but unfortunately I do not have my own place with a garden. If I were to plant in the garden, it would be best in winter when the tree is dormant, you could depot it, remove the soil so it is bear root, and then dig a hole and fill in the soil and pack it around the roots. I would not bother amending the soil with compost, just soil and the fungi. Then you could much the top and add a little manure before spring. If you decide to transplant the tree during the growing season, then you would depot the tree and plant the whole thing "not bear root" as the tree is active and that could cause harm.
I'm not having much luck with the cherry trees I have been growing. I have a bad feeling I'll never get cherries to grow in my clay soil. I'm going to try to start some of my own from seeds, what do I have to lose??? I'm ever going to try potting them up with my garden soil, so if they don't make it thru the first year, I won't be wasting too much time. I'm going to try to start about twenty and hope for the best. Keep growing1
Cherry's like we'll draining soil, a good sandy loam with plenty of rich organic matter. Give it ago, plant plenty and see what happens, like you say, there's nothing to lose 😃
keep your top soil dig a foot or soo of the clay up mend the rest of the hole with the top soil a good compost i used black kow peat or coco coir pearlite and vermiculite i also put a bark mulch down little sand wont hurt heavy clay soil either i live in indiana we have alot of clay in our soil i water every other day and its almost taller then me now with alot of new growth

Like you said its fun growing from seed its like a lottery, I read a grower planted over 1000 mango seeds but only one survived and it became a cold Hardy variety because his location was colder than the parent plant seeds, but its now a world renowned variety for colder regions, and he gets royalties for every plant that is propagated
You can treat root rot but it's no guarantee. Usually a fungicide will work if it's caused by a fungus, but peroxide will work better for fungi and bacteria but could cause root damage if you don't dilute it enough.
thanks for the tip Josh. I read Root Rot in cherry's seems a pretty terminal illness. Ill keep them just in case for a few months. I used some copper spray on the root mas and chopped as much dead root back as possible without trying to go overboard. dusted with cinnamon. But I think they pretty dead.
you dont have to graft the whole thing, you can just do a part of it as long as the graft takes anything past that point will be one fruit and anything else will be another.

If it were me I would let them both grow and fruit, see what it’s like. Then if the fruit is bad graft onto them with a few different nice cherry varieties 😊

nice idea. What I wanted to do is grow some almonds that I collected here from a tree and use them to graft a cherry on to as the roots are very hardy and deal well with the climate here. I need to get around to planting the seed.
The best way to plant cherries or any fruit is to take the fruit itself after it has ripened and plant the whole fruit in the ground and it will emerge the next year.
ya my two little saplings didnt make it threw winter so i went and picked up a lappins cherry tree from the store its growing amazing its about as tall as i am got a granny smith apple as well trying to air layer both and keep in containers to do grafting myself just need to find a rootstock at the nursery and let it shoot suckers to produce my own rootstock
I suggest that you graft one cherry sapling and the other one grow it as it is (this will be your control cherry plant). Let us see which cherry plant will grow better…..
Hi I have two 10 year old cherry tree's and the cherry's are small with 2 Stone's inside the taste is not very sweet. I prune only a little. So what should I do ?
sounds like a wild cherry tree, you could learn how to graft them. find a good tree you like the taste of and take a graft and implant it on to your tree. I have not yet got any videos on this subject but there is a lot out there

That sounds like a great plan! Let's hope both survive! They got burnt to a frizzel 2 weeks ago when we had a heat wave 52c 😳 and didn't get watered 😢 they seem to be slowly pulling through.
It was a soft repot, meaning very little disturbance to the roots, if any. Just slid them out and packed the new soil around. They doing very well 😀 let's hope they do well this summer.

I think the main mistake is the sole fact that you try to grow cherries from seeds. Those trees grow too big, it is much better to use proper rootstock like Colt or GiSeLa, at least here in Europe we do it like that and results are much better than rootstock from seeds. And supermarket cherry trees here are always grafted high quality varieties, eve the cheapest trees from Lidl are good quality, much better than seedlings.
I know you said you started using soil for mediterranean plants, but I can't find any sandy loam soil to buy, any exact product you're willing to share?
I grew some cherries from seed, they were supermarket cherries that came from Chile .. I bought them in Texas where I live. They took 6 months to stratify, which was a lot longer than I expected .. in fact I almost threw them out because I didn't think they were going to do anything. They are doing great and I have planted them in potting soil and water them as needed so I don't get a root rot problem. Thank you very much for your videos, they have really helped me with my plants.

Hi, I live in Melbourne and we are about to come out of winter. The seedlings are sprouting slowly but want to know if I should keep them indoors until summer or can leave outside when spring starts? Thanks a lot
you can leave them out doors, i would just make sure they have some cover from heavy rains, harsh winds and so on. otherwise just leave them in a bright window but be careful if intense light coming through and burning the plant, don't put too close to the glass.
I had 8 survivors out of 12 started. At 9 months old the tallest one was 1.2 m tall , two of them were planted out in the ground this past fall , the remaining 6 are in 2.5 gallon pots over-wintering in my unheated garage.
No Cherries do not grow true to seed, meaning that the fruit will not be the same as the one the seed came from. It will be a big genetic gamble, you may get a fine tree that grows well in your climate or you maybe get a poor tree. The possibilities are endless, it could exhibit any number of qualities from its parents and lineage. One way to get around this, and we will cover it in a future video when our cherry trees are ready, is to graft them. So in essence we will be using the seed-grown plant as a rootstock to support a grafted cherry that produces and grows well. Also bear in mind that you will need a minimum of 2 genetically distinct plants for cross-pollination. Hope that helps @mnp870 🙃 Happy growing 🌱🍒🍒🍒

grafting is where you take a small branch from a productive tree and you insert it in to a rootstock, eg: the seed grown plant, and then once it takes you allow the graft to become the new trunk of the plant and it guarantees good fruit production and speeds up the amount of years it takes to fruit,.

I would only graft one tree, that way, if the other tree does make sour cherries, those cherries will be perfect for pies or other pastries

put cinnamon powder around your fruit trees to keep the antes away from them, antes don't like cinnamon powder, it irritated them
good tip Wilfred, cinnamon is great. I used to use it to keep ants away from my strawberry's.
I was going to attempt to sprout the seeds, but then I realized we have the worst soil possible.. bloody heavy waterholding CLAY !!!😮😮😮
Graft on half and leave the other .. 2 varieties on one tree ...ember of .y family once grafted 3 different apples on one tree .. it worked

I was always told to put a layer of pebbles at the base of a pot to aid in drainage.
a very small layer of small stones help to keep the drainage hole clear but any more don't really help and rob the pot of valuable space.

ya my two little saplings didnt make it threw winter so i went and picked up a lappins cherry tree from the store its growing amazing its about as tall as i am got a granny smith apple as well trying to air layer both and keep in containers to do grafting myself just need to find a rootstock at the nursery and let it shoot suckers to produce my own rootstock

I suggest that you graft one cherry sapling and the other one grow it as it is (this will be your control cherry plant). Let us see which cherry plant will grow better…..

No not pure neem. I use pure neem oil diluted in water. So 1-1.5ml neem oil to 1 liter of water and a few drops dish soap

sounds like a wild cherry tree, you could learn how to graft them. find a good tree you like the taste of and take a graft and implant it on to your tree. I have not yet got any videos on this subject but there is a lot out there

That sounds like a great plan! Let's hope both survive! They got burnt to a frizzel 2 weeks ago when we had a heat wave 52c 😳 and didn't get watered 😢 they seem to be slowly pulling through.

Don’t transplant them until they are much older
It was a soft repot, meaning very little disturbance to the roots, if any. Just slid them out and packed the new soil around. They doing very well 😀 let's hope they do well this summer.

I think the main mistake is the sole fact that you try to grow cherries from seeds. Those trees grow too big, it is much better to use proper rootstock like Colt or GiSeLa, at least here in Europe we do it like that and results are much better than rootstock from seeds. And supermarket cherry trees here are always grafted high quality varieties, eve the cheapest trees from Lidl are good quality, much better than seedlings.
But growing seeds is so satisfying

I know you said you started using soil for mediterranean plants, but I can't find any sandy loam soil to buy, any exact product you're willing to share?
just look for a good potting soil that has good drainage with something like perlite added.
I grew some cherries from seed, they were supermarket cherries that came from Chile .. I bought them in Texas where I live. They took 6 months to stratify, which was a lot longer than I expected .. in fact I almost threw them out because I didn't think they were going to do anything. They are doing great and I have planted them in potting soil and water them as needed so I don't get a root rot problem. Thank you very much for your videos, they have really helped me with my plants.

Hi, I live in Melbourne and we are about to come out of winter. The seedlings are sprouting slowly but want to know if I should keep them indoors until summer or can leave outside when spring starts?

you can leave them out doors, i would just make sure they have some cover from heavy rains, harsh winds and so on. otherwise just leave them in a bright window but be careful if intense light coming through and burning the plant, don't put too close to the glass.
Cut the tops off for scion and graft to a really good rootstock. I think they use some plum rootstock for cherry to help with soil conditions.
this is the plan for next year, hopfully i can find a good cherry to get a scion from.
I had 8 survivors out of 12 started. At 9 months old the tallest one was 1.2 m tall , two of them were planted out in the ground this past fall , the remaining 6 are in 2.5 gallon pots over-wintering in my unheated garage.

Don’t must seedlings ( fruit trees). at a certain time needs to be grafted because the fruit isn’t going to be the same fruit. ?
No Cherries do not grow true to seed, meaning that the fruit will not be the same as the one the seed came from. It will be a big genetic gamble, you may get a fine tree that grows well in your climate or you maybe get a poor tree. The possibilities are endless, it could exhibit any number of qualities from its parents and lineage. One way to get around this, and we will cover it in a future video when our cherry trees are ready, is to graft them. So in essence we will be using the seed-grown plant as a rootstock to support a grafted cherry that produces and grows well. Also bear in mind that you will need a minimum of 2 genetically distinct plants for cross-pollination. Hope that helps @mnp870 🙃 Happy growing 🌱🍒🍒🍒

anything within the prunus family. I want to grow some almonds and use them as cherry rootstocks in the future as almond grows wild here and the rootstock very strong in these environment.

New to all this so what does grafting do exactly?
grafting is where you take a small branch from a productive tree and you insert it in to a rootstock, eg: the seed grown plant, and then once it takes you allow the graft to become the new trunk of the plant and it guarantees good fruit production and speeds up the amount of years it takes to fruit,.
