    After planting seeds and till the plants start it’s first leave do you keep the pots under light for 8-12 hours or do you leave the pots outside in the sun? How often to water the pots with seeds?

    • @GreenthumbsGarden
      @GreenthumbsGarden  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A grow light is not needed, I just happened to have one on hand and it gave me a nice place to get them going. Place them in a bright area where they can receive good light but not direct. This could be done with shade cloth or tree cover. Water, when you see the pot, is getting a little dry when you poke your finger in.

    I grew up with cherry trees and would just like to suggest ... don't forget to buy bird nets for your trees as they mature. Birds will ignore the sour cherries (pie cherries) and unripe cherries. But sweet black or bing cherries, such as these ... on the day these ripen, EVERY BIRD within 10 miles will be in your trees. They absolutely love sweet cherries once they are ripe.

      it's hard to beat the birds Tim 😂 last year I had some great blueberries on my bushes, and they were gone just as each one ripened... We probably ate 6 between me and my wife😂😅

    I’ve never done what you’re doing, but I have had great success starting vegetable seeds in jiffy pots. The neat thing about them is it would eliminate the washing of pots and having to risk disturbing the root ball during transfer. The jiffy pots are biodegradable and the roots will just grow right through them. Love your channel, your knowledge and your enthusiasm.

    This is my second video in a row, I Only thoughts were that you had great energy and you were well spoken . I just recieved some dwarf or bonzi cherry seeds i ordered a while ago. So i thought id trust fate and dive right in so im all subbed up and i am all in on the growing journey with you ! i always like gardeners who make it interesting and fun , besides your charisma is a blast as well. I have been urging people to begin trying who havent grown before ...We do live in strange times when its possibly going to be needed and besides , a little extra self reliance is just what people need to have ,so thanks for the first two installments they were great and i look forward to more !
    Your accent caught my attention tho and I was curious.. Is it Scottish by any chance ? You seem to be quite knowledgeable about growing things and i thought at first perhaps (depending on the amount of Silica ) you added to the soil may have boosted the Ph level in the soil up a bit too high off your fairly neutral base... i used to use it in water growing methods and its happend to me before causing deficiencies....but then again the leaves wouldnt wilt so quickly . So i think you have it . Its nice to have found your channel , good luck and we shall cross paths in comments again. sorry about the length of this lol. Take Care

      Thank you Tim! Get diving right in! and just be careful buying seeds when they put "bonsai" and buzz words like "Rare" in the title. Bonsai is a method and you cant get seed that will grow a bonsai but all bonsais would grow to be full sized trees if not for years of work from the cultivator. Thanks for the positive feedback mate, I hope you have success with the seeds you got!

    BOUT HOW TALL WILL THE TREE GROW,ALSO HOW LONG BEFORE THEY GO TO FRUIT. AAAAND CAN I PLANT THE IN MY GROW ZONE. I LIVE IN NORTH WESTERN CONNECTICUT, USA . One chart states im in zone 5 with zone 6 directly to my right.

    • @GreenthumbsGarden
      @GreenthumbsGarden  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      they can grow up to 35 feet and 25 wide. It could take up to 10 years before they fruit and there is a small chance it might never fruit or the fruit be sour. What your getting is a wild cherry tree that will exhibit any of the quality's of its parentage for better or worse. What we will do when our saplings are bigger is graft a productive tree on to our saplings and that will make them fruit much sooner and guarantee production. Yes your growing zone should be fine!

      @@GreenthumbsGarden - Just adding some info... My new next door neighbor yesterday cut two cherry trees higher than that! ;-)
      Luckily for me because my satellite signal was literally gone! Meanwhile I got some of it for fire wood and wood chips. The smaller branches, leaves, etc. Basically the wood he didn't want.
      Since is selling the "good" parts for timber.
      In another country, I've got a few young and much smaller cherry trees. Producing marvelous cherries. Those are still short. Since they're younger trees.
      But even than the cherries from the upper part of the trees are already for the birds. Since I can't reach them!

    Very good, I have some Rainer Cherries, I put 3 seeds aside to plant. Thank goodness I watch your videos. I was just going to plant the pits. Didn’t know you have to open them. Hope I can. I have two questions. One to grow cherry trees they need a cold winter????? Second question how many year will it take for them to bear fruit??????? I live in Mexico!!!!!! The coldest in winter it gets here is about 49 F. Highest temperature in spring is 95 F. Rain from June till September.

    • @GreenthumbsGarden
      @GreenthumbsGarden  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi penni, you don't have to crack them open but it has some benefits, you can check the seed, see if its viable, hydrate it and get better germination chances. what you will get is a wild cherry tree, it could take up to 10 years to bear fruit. You can graft it in the future to get fruit earlier. Yes a cold winter is needed to get good fruit, about 32- 39 for a month, but its best to check for local variety's where you live and try and take a graft from one of those trees. plant more than one tree also for cross pollination.

      you should be fine, I read your gardening hardiness zone is considered 5a. Thus, there is no need to search for cold-hardy cherry trees, as either type will thrive in USDA zone 5."_

      as long as you get a cold time, cherry's need on average 1000 hours of chill time for them to fruit. Some cultivars need much less. Thats about 32 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit (0 to 4.5 Celsius) for them to produce flowers.

      Or you can forget all this imported "crap"! Had some (homemade) compost, to local soil. Preferably from where the tree will be located! ;-)

      I found that video footage Papa I was talking about, they doing good but I replanted them in to wide containers and have been using a acidifier every several months to keep the soil acidity lower. Ill try and post the vid in the next days. • @papajeff5486
      @papajeff5486 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, the dirt, in the parts of central and south east Texas that I’ve lived in, is this terrible caliche clay, not fit for growing much besides scrub oak and cedar. Blueberries would not care for this alkaline dirt. And I love blueberries. However, blackberries are said (by the extension service) to like it here. I’ll give them a try. I tried blueberries three years. I failed. I think I missed on two problems: the acidity of the soil and keeping the young plants watered enough. The roots don’t have hair roots; therefore, the plants like to be watered more frequently than I watered them.
